emKse said: yeah a trainer at my gym tried to tell me i was lifting too much weight when i was trying to hit my 10 too! he was like "do you really want to look like him?" and pointed to this really buff dude. isnt it gym-etiquitte to MYOB unless asked for assistance??? Maybe I'mt just wierd, but I'd look at the guy and say "Hell yeah!"....doesn't matter whether it's true or not. Some folks need to mind their own business. Now, if they just offered a spot, that's a bit different, but some of this stuff is just ridiculous. I just find it amazing how many people seem to understand everyone elses bodies, you know?? ;)

Body for Life Forum Message by sas (55 posts) at 09:39 AM:
Ok, just a devil's advocate here.. recently I have seen some people in the gym doing crazy exercises that could really hurt themselves, and trainers walk by saying nothing. I would hope that the gym feels some responsibility to help people get the most out of their workout. Maybe give the new trainer the benefit of the doubt, it wasn't a personal attack but an offer of assistance. Maybe she didn't see all your other sets and was worried. I would just say, "thanks for noticing, I sacrificed on that last set to push through." Good luck!!

Thread: Question for Bodybuilding/Figure Competitors (207 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by cfingram (1384 posts) at 10:10 AM:
Kelli: It all depends on what you want “personally” like and want. I have competed in a Figure Competition back in October and the experience was very rewarding. I decided to do Figure because Bodybuilding would have been even more strenuous on my body…you must bring your bodyfat level as low as possible (lower then Figure) Generally, women are “naturally” small, however, some are blessed with a little bit more muscles and that’s why you have different weight classes. You don’t have to be big but, if you were to see the women bodybuilders at the “Olympia”, you’d soon realize that ALL of them are on steroids…you CANNOT get to that level without the use of steroids, they are “juiced” up. If you are thinking of doing a bodybuilding show, stick with “natural” shows :), the competitors are drug tested and it’s an even level playing field.

Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (349 posts) at 10:14 AM:
not only that..women's bodybuilding is kind of getting the heave ho from promoters..they know the audience would rather see figure/fitness..thats where the money is...so thats what most of the contests are

Nope haven't seen it. I don't have cable *LOL* We took it "out" of the house since we didn't watch TV anyway...so, I have very basic tv channels *LOL* (5 to be exact! ha!).

Body for Life Forum Message by cfingram (1384 posts) at 02:34 PM:
There's NO money to be made in Figure or Fitness until you become a PRO.....so, in the beginning, everything comes out of your pocket unless you are lucky enough and blessed with finding a sponser (gym owner, etc.) that will help you. Figure/Fitness Competitions is very expensives, suits can easily cost over $1,000!!! Think I'm kidding...HA! I paid close to $400.00 for my suits (about $200.00 each) and I was BLOWN AWAY by the competitions, their suits were decked out compared to mine. I had very little stones, and I'm having to add more myself to save money and make them look nicer.

Oh can't forget the shoes, the tan, the make up, the hair, the nails, supplements, hiring a trainer, the food, the supplements, etc....OUF! OOOH and you can't forget to find a babysitter if need be, paying for overnight stay (if needed), travel time, gas, buying photos (there will be photographer taking pictures!).........oh and you got to pay for sign up fees, your NPC Card, etc. The adventure is fun and exciting, but can be expensive too :-) But it's worth it, as long as you don't break the bank!

Body for Life Forum Message by Linne (482 posts) at 03:22 PM:
OK heres the scoop- I called the EAS fitness expert and they said spinning is fine. No need to do it in addition to your 20 minutes though. So just schedule it in as one of your 3 cardio days and stick to your normal EFL diet plan adding a little more protein wont hurt but as long as your still keeping up with your LBWO and increasing weight and hitting 10's you should see no decline in your muscle growth in the legs by doing spinning once a week for 45-90 minutes at a time. Spinning "is" interval training-its good approved cardio for the BFL challenge.

Hey Charliegirl, There's lots of good information here. In terms of gender, you may be in the minority when you step into the free weight area. So what! You're there to get strong and get muscle. If you insist on bringing your monsters along, there's another unspoken rule: "Check your demons at the door." They'll wait for you. Maybe, maybe not! But be yourself. If there's a piece of equipment or technique you're unfamiliar with, it's ok to ask someone, but be confident. Not needy. You'll know you're in the game the day you walk out of the gym after a monster workout and realize in retrospect that those guys in the pit were just an afterthought. Handle it!

Body for Life Forum Message by tigermuscle (349 posts) at 04:53 AM:
Myintencity has some good advice..look at it this way too..EVERYONE at your gym had their FIRST day there! Everyone has a day one! Next year people will be coming up to you for advice!

Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (20 posts) at 05:22 AM:
Just keep in mind that all those guys in the free weight room had to start somewhere too!

Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (154 posts) at 06:13 AM:
This was actually a problem for me the first time I tried getting in shape pre BFL days. I got a membership at Bally's. The first day I was wandering around like a lost little firstgrader. When I tried to get help from a trainer, he just looked through me and gave me a standard line about, "well free weights are best," I felt brushed off. I noticed later that he was busy helping a woman in much better shape than me. Now granted, there are a million and one reasons why this could have happened. None of them matter. All that mattered is I felt fat, unattractive, and unimportant. I never set foot in the gym again. Do not underestimate how important confidence in the gym is. When I did go for my first challenge, I worked out at home for a month before I got a membership at a different gym. Much better experience. I reccomend getting a set of Powerblocks, or other adjustable weights for home. If you are really struggling at the gym, work out at home a bit to boost your confidence. There's no shame in doing that. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Dana D (522 posts) at 08:01 AM:
Girl...Ive been there/done that too. Try adding a new gym, in a new city (and STATE)and being 270lbs to the equation and see how self concious I was? The best advice I can give is this:
ACT like you belong!!
That free weight area is as much YOURS as it is theirs, and after the 1st 2 sessions or so, youll be an old pro! And just think...by working out in "that" area-you just might inspire other women to hit the free weights too and how cool is that? :)

Body for Life Forum Message by cookie1135 (1297 posts) at 08:34 AM:
Hi Charliegirl! Welcome To The Guest Book!!!! And Congratulations on starting your challenge!!!! Don't be worried what other people at the gym are thinking, and by all means do not let that hold you back!!! Just wait, in a few months time you'll will be showing them up!! And believe me, every one has to start somewhere, including all those guys at the gym. Just focus on your workout and don't worry about what anyone else is thinking!! You are doing this for You!!! When you walk into the gym, hold your head up high and act as if you belong there!!!! You have just as much right to be there as anyone else!!!! I wish you all the very best!!!! I agree with most of the posts on here. Almost every guy in the gym is there to either change their appearance or they like working out for various reasons. I personally love lifting weights and have been somewhat of a gymrat since I was 16. I lift to blow of steam, it's my alone time. I glance around and if I see someone that need help I will offer it but usually I am very zoned in and listening to my MP3 player. My point is that most of the guys that you are intimidated by probably don't even realize that anyone is in the gym but themselves. Play your music kick buck and enjoy your workout!

Body for Life Forum Message by MomOfThree (3 posts) at 05:02 PM:
Hey there Charliegirl! You have no reason to be embarrassed at the gym. First of all, the men in the weight room are concentrating on what they have to do, not on you and what you are doing! I have a home gym now, but a couple years ago, before I gave birth to babies #2 & #3, I worked out all the time in a gym where I was one of two women who belonged. This gym was geared toward body builders. I was embarrassed at first, like you, but after really paying attention to make sure nobody was "checking me out" I noticed that nobody cared about me, what I looked like or what I was doing! They were all there to work on themselves! Also, anyone in a gym knows that everyone has to start somewhere. Just concentrate on you and what you are doing ... before you know it you will look in the mirror and wonder why you were ever embarrassed in the first place ... I promise! By the way, you don't look horrible in the first place.

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (235 posts) at 01:50 PM:
I just got one 2 days ago and I love it. I have only been using it for myoplex and the containers are a bit small but definitly worth the cost. It really works well.

Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (155 posts) at 01:51 PM:
I LOVE it!! I got it for Christmas from the in-laws. Now I did notice that they don't sell all the parts you can get for it at places like Walmart and Target. The one they got us came from the magic bullet website and it came with an actual blender and juicer attachment. I haven't used those yet and may not really need to. I LOVE the fact that you can just use the cup that you blend everything in to drink out of! So much easier to clean and I think the shakes come out creamier and frothier!! Can you tell I'm in love?? LOL SHelly =)

Body for Life Forum Message by lovetorun (92 posts) at 01:51 PM:
Can you mix a whole myoplex shake in it? I like the idea of more than one cup for mixing, especially when you have 2 people!! What size is the cup? How many oz's??

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (28 posts) at 02:00 PM:
I have one and REALLY like it, BUT...I find that it is too small for shakes. You cannot fill it very full and I have had it overflow once (BIG mess). I like to put more water and ice in my shakes so I started using my regular blender for my shakes. Also, the Magic Bullet is made to be used in short bursts....no more than 60 seconds at a time I think. I found that if I tried to make 2 shakes (one after the other, one for me and one for my daughter) that the thing would start smoking! For me, the Magic Bullet is great for cooking but not the best for protein shake making. You can buy a bigger blender jar attachment for it, but it's another $40+ or so and if you add that to the $60 for the main pieces, you've got a $100+ blender. For that much money, you can get one that can puree rocks AND myoplex! JMO...

So says my bf. I have done 10k for the past two years each spring and I am NOT a runner. Never have been. I forced myself to do it to see if I could do it. And I did. And i hated it.
But Tim reminded me last night that somewhere along the line I said that this year I would train for the half marathon. Ugh. did i really say that?
Any good suggestions on a running program to increase distance and stamina? I don't think 20 min of HIIT is going to cut it this time. Meg

Body for Life Forum Message by Flexie (4 posts) at 04:55 PM:
I too have signed myself up for a half marathon this year, actually 19th Feb to be exact and when I first started training 2.6kms seemed huge, but six weeks in I ran 15k on Monday evening in a time that I didn't think possible (1:50), not champion standards by any means but fast for me (my fastest over 10 km is 1:12). I know I can do it, even with a three week holiday to England where I will be training outside in the cold, not the summer weather we are having here at the moment. Here is a link to the programme I am using to train with. It has a bunch of stuff about heart rates for speed etc but as I am more concerned about finishing, I am just covering the distances. Hope this helps http://www.britwyn.co.nz/asics/events/events_auckland_ha_ma.html

Here is a link to 4 training scheds for the beginner minim-marathoner: http://www.500festival.com/marathon/TrainingInformation.asp 1 is for walk, 1 is walk-run 1 is run-walk 1 is run But it is all meant to have you finish... I am doing the mini in mid May and am taking this as a prototype as it is based on times. First doing my HIIT then adding light running after that. The total time and extra cardio actually does 'almost' fit into Dr. Hussmans allowed tweaks to the BFL program.

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (32 posts) at 06:01 PM:
Okay, Meg. I did the same dumbass thing last year. And I started from ALMOST ground zero (I could run about 1.5-2 miles), and I trained for it in 12 weeks using the training on halhigdon.com. I had only ever run a couple of 5k races, and the last one was about a month and a half before I started training. I absolutely am not a runner either--I just try to make myself plod along now and again, and I DID IT. I ran every single step of the way and it took me over 2 and a half hours to do it. But I DID IT!!! PM me if you want and I'll give you all my "wealth" of knowledge.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (209 posts) at 01:58 PM:
Calcium should be fine as long as you do these things: 1. Take it with or right after food. 2. Divide it up, taking the recommended dose in two different mealtimes. (The usual recommended dose is 1200 mg calcium daily, so just take one 600 mg tab. 3. Make sure it has Vitamin D in it as well--most do. 4. Don't take more than the RDA. I have osteoporosis and have been taking medication plus calcium for over 2 years now, maybe 3 years, and one thing the doctor told me to do was cut down or cut out the diet colas. He said all colas have phosphate in them that tends to wash out calcium from the bones. (I don't think that's how I got the osteoporosis, but that was making it worse). He also told me not to waste money on coral calcium or advertised brands ( I assume he meant Citracal)but just to buy an over the counter brand that was made by a reputable manufacturer.

Man, I missed a lot of work last week since I was sick and just wanted to check in and say hey to all my buddies!  I (like a lot of you) started a new challenge yesterday (1-2-06),  I was a bit upset that during my off week (being sick and not working out or eating right) I gained 5 lbs! Takes a month to loose 5 lbs and in one week I got it back!  Not Cool!  But I am feeling better, not 100%, but better and ready to kick some bootie this challenge!  Summer's comin'!

I got my son out of jail (detention center) after a long battle, on Friday!  Yee-Haw! My twins and I went to spend the day with him yesterday!  They were SO happy to see their brother....it was awesome!

Well that's really all for the checkin in!  Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a safe New Years Eve!  2006 is going to be awesome isn't it!

BTW Mellie, I did gain a little. 3 lbs. in 3 weeks (not too bad), I saw an increase of 1/2" in the chest, the waist and the hips......maybe I can get rid of this in the first week if I try really hard.....we'll see

Body for Life Forum Message by Mellie (587 posts) at 03:18 PM:
I believe you can do it....that wasn't bad at all for 3 weeks! What the heck happened with me? I'm way upset about it! Well, hopefully when I weigh in again on Monday it will be gone. Hey, do you know, for our challenge do we have to report weekly? I usually don't weigh in during my challenge until I have completed 4 weeks, then weigh in every 2 weeks...I don't like doing it weekly, it can be discouraging.

I just KNOW that title will bring every male in from miles around like a dog in heat....lol. Sorry to dissapoint ya guys... I just got a call about a referral request I put in about a month ago for a breast reduction. I'm so excited! I'm so nervous! I'm so scared! I'm back to being excited! (welcome to my world..) I know from experience that my breast size doesn't go down with weight loss. I know my bra gets looser, but that's more from the BACK shrinking than the front..ha! (yeah, nice visual, huh?)This means that I could keep DD jugs even though I lose 50+ lbs! Ack! (For those of you who are picturing Carmen Electra here and wondering what the problem is, nature doesn't work that way.. Nature is much more cruel than that. Plastic surgeons put great perky boobs on women with no body fat.. nature works ya over like a giant pile of putty that has melted in the microwave. It's ugly, it's sad, but it's life.) I also know that normal size boobies would make working out so much better. I wouldn't have to wear at least 2 bras and still be sore from a 10 min jog! My shirts would fit! I could go into the perkiness factor, but I'll just leave it at that. I could buy bras in normal stores and not at Lane Bryant! (who, by the way, has great bras for the bigger-boobie people) Is there anyone out there who has had this surgery?? Anyone who can offer thoughts, guidance, support? (and by support I mean the non-underwire kind)

girl, I have no answers for you, but PLEASE let us know how it goes. I've been considering one too, but will wait until we have another kiddo. I have the same probs. I hate trying on coats that are a size 12, and fit great until I get to the chest, then I can't even button them!! I am excited for you! Micky :)

Body for Life Forum Message by Mickymacb (424 posts) at 01:07 PM:

NO!! NOT have to wear a bra?? Say it ain't so!!!!! I'd be in free-boobie heaven! I don't even go get my mail without hoistin these sistas up! A strong wind might come by and I'd have to untangle them from a bush or something :)

Body for Life Forum Message by GetInShape (50 posts) at 01:16 PM:
Not really support but observation. My neice had this procedure done 2 years ago. Her shoulders hurt because of the weight put on them for the support of her heavy breast. She was happy with the results afterwards however, she did not get on a weight loss program and has since gain weight and is right back to where she was. (sigh)

Oh, I get a "free" reduction too like Nicabod. I got way smaller during my first challenge, which I thought I didn't like, but then after I slacked, I was reaching for something and I was like "HUH??" because I had gained my boobs back!! This made me even more unhappy than loosing them in the first place, because if the boobs are back, the butt must be back!! I kinda liked going to do a weight workout in a tank with a built-in, and nothing else! I used to have to double-bra them! You know what they say, anything more than a handful is just a waste! Ok, I broke down and bought one of those Enell Bra's that Oprah made such a big deal about, and I have got to tell you that it is AWESOME!  Today is the first day I tried it, I do pretty intense "jumping" cardio and I have a lot of problem with getting good support and with this puppy my girls didn't move an inch and it was very comfortable!  I didn't feel like I was in a cast!  So if you are considering buying one (at $56!) they are totally worth it!

Just thought I would share! I was so excited about it today that I wanted to tell everyone but I don't think all they guys I work with would understand or appreciate my excitement!  LOL

I have mysterious groin pain, going to the Dr. tomorrow to see what is up with that and last night I got 5 beautiful stitches in my left thumb, thanks to a sugar-free cherry pie filling can. Body for Life Forum Message by helpdial911 (18 posts) at 11:24 PM: Ho w much money have you spent on BFL?
Just curious on how much everyone has spent on supplements for BFL. One of the things that always discouraged me from doing the challenge or on my own was the price. I am lucky to live/work about 10 minutes from EAS in Golden, CO and once a month they have a civil service sale and supps are anywhere from 60-90% off. First challenge I think I spent $300 and actually had $1600 worth of stuff had I got it at GNC. Bad news is, EAS is moving and this month is the last month to stock up. So, how much has everyone else spent?

Body for Life Forum Message by Buffy-the-FatLayer-Slayer (42 posts) at 11:29 PM:
I haven't actually spent anything on BFL per say. I did buy protein powder and I take vitamins but that's it. Oh, instead of the Body for Life book I got the audio (cassettes so they were only $4.99) but I may be one of the few people left with a tape player. I listen to the tapes when I do dishes or whatever. So I guess all I've spent is $4.99 (Canadian).

I just got my EFL book. It will be good for me... I never have time to cook, and not much of a fan of spending lots of time in the kitchen either.

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (89 posts) at 07:16 PM:
I feel badly for saying anything negative about it. It inspires a lot of people to have some fun with their choices. I was in my "cookbook" head and not "menu inspirations" when I posted this. I didn't mean to insult anyone who was enjoying the book and the recipes. I didn't put the energy into experimenting on my first challenge. I am ready to make this more interesting and delicious this time around. I'm playing with some of Bill's recipes (adding a tweaking) and also playing with some of my favorites from other cookbooks. I'll share my favorites for those who have the time and inkling.

Body for Life Forum Message by LincolnJenn (1 posts) at 10:16 AM: Seems like a lot of food!
Hi, I started on 1/1 and am using the EFL book. My husband and I are not picky eaters, so we are following the example menus in the back of the book. He is not complaining...but it seems like a lot of food for me! I am full most of the time. I just ate a breakfast burrito made with 1 egg and 3 egg whites....I am stuffed. How can I possibly lose weight this way. I have my doubts, but am going to ride this out and see where it takes me! Any advise from anyone?

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (209 posts) at 10:33 AM:
Portion sizes are the key. Eating six times a day doesn't mean three course dinners. A portion size for a typical woman is less than a deck of cards for a protein, and about half a cup for a carb. A myoplex lite, which is for women, is 190 calories. "Eating" six Myoplex Lites a day would only be about 1,140 calories a day. Not that you're counting calories, but this illustrates how small the portions need be. If you are using the EFL book, be sure to read page 73. Ther, it explains that the EFL portion sizes are midway between what a man needs for maintenance and what a woman needs for maintenance. So, if you're eating the whole portion, you're likely to be gaining weight! Check the website, "eatingforlife.com for the portion sizes and nutrition information.

Body for Life Forum Message by LittleBig (29 posts) at 04:02 PM:
Yah...be really careful with those portion sizes. I LOVE the cookbook, but my first challenge, I only lost like 5 pounds and I am pretty sure that it was due to over portioning. I am being much more careful this time around.

Yep. I've really done something to my back. I went to see a massage therapist the Saturday afternoon. She worked on my back and into my gluteal muscles. She couldn't believe how tight they were. So we discussed my routine and she's thinking that my leg extension may have aggravated the sciatic nerve. She suggested icing the area...and using less weight. This sucks...the pain is crap...but less weight? Should I do more reps to ensure that I progress? Your thoughts appreciated.

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (381 posts) at 10:20 AM:
I would switch exercises.... maybe do something with free weights til you feel better, sometimes I injure myself using the machines without knowing it til the next day....maybe do some dead lifts? If you stick w the same exercise I would decrease the weight til that muscle recovers.

For women, nature is throwing you a curve ball. You are constantly swimming against the tide to maintain your best fitness. If you stop, you go in the other direction. This is not a torturous regimen. It is possible to continue this style of nutritious eating and this very minimal exercise. And the result is a very fit and trim body. I have been working out my entire life and have maintained a fit body. THIS is actually the most straight forward, and least time consuming maintenance that I can think of.

I did the same thing. I finished my challenge on DEc. 4th and felt absolutely great. But I decided to take a little break. I hate to say it is now Jan. 4th and I haven't started yet. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME????????? I'm not like this. I gained 5 pounds of blubb. Yuck. I feel lethargic and gross. I know, just get back to it. I haven't written my goals in my journal. I did do a workout yesterday at home and ate pretty good till the cheesecake. My daughter's birthday cake. I need a good slap and some harsh words. Anyone game?

I am very new here - just started my very first challenge. I had heard about BFL but never read the book. I bought the Women's BFL book and even without knowing the original (YET!) I'm a bit put off by it as I believe it gives advance permission to make excuses. "Mini Chills" to eat chocolate? Give me a break.

I keep getting negative feed back from this book, but I have friends asking if BFL Women is worth the read. I don't want to misquote Kelly Adair, but she didn't say positive things about it. Kenny

I'm already signed up for the Torch Challenge and my life has become QUITE busy so there isn't a lot of time to come in here and do much posting. I miss you guys! But I need to focus on finishing work on Friday then starting school on Monday. it's both exciting and scary! So, I will stop in and report once in a while about how many pushups I've done. Cross your fingers for me and hope it eventually climbs past single digits!!! Good luck and much success to you all!! Connie

I just read the whole thing. Knee push ups are aloud but your goal has to be for one or the other. If you cannot do real push ups or the are super difficult please do the knee push ups. this is a fun competition in honor of Julie not a war for first place. Although I will end up with the most push ups:) I would say if you can do more than 10 real push ups in a row than use real push ups as your goal if not do knee ones.

Jeremy...I believe that puts us at 72,000 push-ups pledged!!! And it doesn't cost you a thing, except for your personal sweat, blood and tears for Julie and her TORCH! I knocked out 60 tonight after my HIIT and abs workout...I was exhausted and it felt great! Could we get to 100,000 pledged push-ups? Could we get sponsors and raise money and awareness for Julie's cause? Where do we go from here? Who would've thunk it??? BIG BULL ponderin'

You guys ROCK...I'm really proud of all your enthusiasm....a real team!

But...after having endured 3 surgeries on my rotator cuff, placing 2 screws and several other procedures. I want everyone to please becareful of over training!!! Which is almost guaranteed by training the same muscle EVERY single day!!! Everyone knows this contradicts what we have learned from Bill Phillips. And I'm sure Julie would want you to give your muscles...time to heal...

So please...be careful!
JB

VERY GOOD point Jerry! What do you think would a better way to approach this? How about so many per week instead of per day? BB

Body for Life Forum Message by JerryBraam.com (83 posts) at 10:00 PM: Re: Push up challenge

Yeah that sounds good Big Bull
...or Maybe... just finish off on upper body days with...dedication Julie push-ups.  Making them the HighPoint for the pecs. YES! The numbers will be MUCH lower.  But we have learned training is all about quality, not quantity.  And it is still in honor Julie, our Champ of Champs!

Be safe team!
Jerry

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1073 posts) at 10:12 PM:
Jerry has a good point. Lets shoot for upper body days only. That brings everyones goal down by about 1/4. So divide your number by and only do the push ups twice a week. I was very sore today and I should have known better but yes I got very excited. Please only do one set.

Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (8 posts) at 10:29 PM:
I tried but I could only do one real pushup, so I will commit to girly pushups--17 upper body workouts times 40 pushups=680 pushups not nearly what other people have pledged, but it is still a goal for me since I haven't exercised in 2 years.

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1073 posts) at 10:29 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by Joe (a.k.a. Onyx) (110 posts) at 11:25 AM:
Just my two cents here... but remember to be consistent when you use one of these ball park online sites. I say this because I did my BF on the Navy site and on mybodycomp.com and got 2 different results (22 percent vs 20 percent respectivly). Obviously I would love to use the lower number, but in thinking about it, I feel that which ever one I use I should just make sure that during the challenge I use the same one.. and thought I would pass it along to all of you..

Body for Life Forum Message by Pixy (356 posts) at 11:36 AM:
I used the 2 sites goingforbuff suggested and it worked out good. I have an accu-measure and kept getting diffrent numbers.

I agree...whichever site you choose, or whichever calipers you purchase and choose to use USE that one means of calculation it's the only way to see the true picture of your decreasing BF%

I can imagine what this challenge will do to my house. It will slowly evolve into one big post-it note with goals, affirmations and reminders posted all over the house. When the fat pictures are developed, these will end up on my refrigerator as a constant reminder of what eating the wrong things has done to me. Fitness and weight training magazines will clutter all surfaces. Most importantly, there will be a growing pile of clothes to give to the goodwill!

Sad about the pics and measurements (total and utter embarassment), but feeling GREAT about today!!!

day one, challenge 1.....ate clean EFL style, drank my gallon of water, and hit my 10's!!!!

It was quite funny, i get to the gym and it was crowded!!  No one was lyin' when we talk about New Years Resolutions!! BUT~ the difference...I will still be there after the month when everyone else pooops out!!!
i had to wait around a few min in between because people were on the machines. but still finished within 49 minutes! not bad for the 46 min suggested!

I had to re-familiarize myself again. It felt sooo good. I cant believe how easy it is to let yourself go. I watched the rerun of this season's biggest loser. I wanted to cry. These people have done so good losing their weight through plain old diet and exercise. It was so amazing to see their stories. During commercials, i was using that time to plan my day for tomorrow.

I cant believe how it makes a difference to PLAN!! I was really lacking when I tried my last challenge 9 mos ago. I wasnt motivated then. I am now! Gotta keep up with my 13 month old!

Sorry for the long post, had to give a daily re-cap! Cant wait to see where I am in 12 weeks! I'm not going to give up!!!  See you at the finish line!

xoxo

I am dying! I think my arms were too close during bench press yesterday because the middle of my chest, like the sternum area is killing me...burning and sore. In fact, my 4 year old so thoughtfully woke me up at 3:30am because HE had to pee (of course, then I did too) and it was hurting so badly I couldn't get back to sleep. I even eventually took an anti-inflammatory but it didn't help. I got on the tm and it was hurting, but felt a little bit better the further I went. Then down to do abs and I was doing the hip lifts on the bench and thought I was going to just die when I leaned back to lay down and when I was getting up, it hurt so badly! I hope I didn't tear it too badly or something. Hopefully it will be better by tomorrow, but you know how it is sometimes more sore on the 2nd day...omg, I hope not. Other than that, I an feel my back, tris and biceps, so I think I had a good workout!!

OK, so first, 2006 is gonna ROCK. Why? Because compared to 2005, there's nowhere to go but UP...ha!I'm getting my hair chopped off today (if I can get the guts to do so), I'm gonna be a new everything..yup. Next...This water thing. I'm honestly a little weary of drinking so much. I start clinicals on Friday. Being on the hospital shift won't be as bad as being on the truck (I cringe to think what will happen on a 12 hour shift with no readily available bathroom). BUT, even being in the hospital... I have to be in the OR doing intubations. What if I gotta pee right when the surgery starts?? How does one tell a surgeon that he has to hold off for a moment so I can relieve my bladder, for me, the lowly paramedic student? I am nothing short of freaking out about this. Anyone have anything to offer besides the option of depends undergarments?? :/ OK, my hubby just called so I'm dumping this thread right here...lol. I have figured out the food thing (or at least started to figure it out), and the working out... what about the water??

Ok, Last night I was watching Biggest Loser reruns and was just so motivated I wanted to jump up and go and run or do something. Then I was flipping thru the tv. and came across the show of a 750+ man. I watch it and felt so sorry for this man he was bed ridden and the last time he walked was in 1998. He couldn't move his legs, roll over or sit up. I kept talking to the TV come on now you can do it. You could see he wanted to change. But the weight over came his body. He ended up with an infection and since he was overweight his body couldn't fight it. We all must be greatful for what we have in our lives. We may look in the mirror and think of ourselves as cows but hey we can walk, run, jump. We have the right tools to loose what extra weight we have and we are working towards our goals. I feel so sorry for that man. But yet I feel horrible for having that documentary to motivate me and inspire me. Thanks for letting me share.

This morning Al Roaker admitted he has gained over 40 lbs. after his gastric bypass surgery and wants to lose 20 lbs in the next 10 weeks. So he has enlisted 2 trainers (authors) to assist him and...surprise! Their supposed  "Revolutionary Idea" to accomplish his goal is described in the new book "3 Hour Diet". Where you eat every 3 hours. Of course it is yet another program that is very similar to a New York Times best seller written almost 10 years ago we all know as Body-for-LIFE.

Anyway the TODAY SHOW, like OPRAH.com is asking for everyone to share their Weight Loss Success Stories! There are prizes for being chosen. So if you already have reached your goals, please send in your info. If you have just started your BFL journey, I have added both links for you to use as another tool to motivate yourself. Which BFL Success Stories will we all see on the Oprah & TODAY SHOW?

Yes, you are correct TigerMuscle, but only in the very exclusive world of bodybuilding.

Bill was the very 1st to organise the very best concepts from several ideas, weeded out the trash, then packaged just the essentials making it a realistic and do able for everyone. Introduce the whole concept to  main stream America. Making it the true revolution!

My point is that BFL does very little advertising. Because I am a huge beliver in the BFL program. My goal is to motivate & educate as many as possible about about a program that has so many positives beyond losing fat...

Only 2 BFL Champs are paid to promote the program. The rest of us (& them) share with you because we truly believe in the Universal Law of Reciprocation described in BFL. Everyone's enthusiasm and comradere says so much about the "BFL Revolution" . We are all true life testimonials. So I am asking everyone interested to share their BFL success story and enthusiasm by sending info to both Oprah.com and the Today show.

Most everyone here (I hope) is also familiar with Dr. Hussman's website regarding BFL and the Glycemic Index. I now see on TV that NutriSystem is claiming that their new program is based on the "revolutionary new glycemic index". Just another company trying to jump on the bandwagon with info that we have all known about for years!

Body for Life Forum Message by Joe (a.k.a. Onyx) (110 posts) at 11:28 AM:
what I really found interesting about his, besides what Jery is speaking about is that Al didn't even realize that he gained 45 pounds since his initial weight loss post gastric by pass. Going through such a dangerous surgery like that and he is still not really taking care of himself... But his PT Guy talking about streching to me is pretty important.. I don't feel like I strech enough, but when I do, I feel much better.. Joe

I'm trying to figure out how someone wouldn't KNOW they had gained "45" lbs. I think I would notice if my clothes were that much thighter...if I were having trouble maintaining my workouts, etc.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (480 posts) at 11:33 AM:
Hmmm...wonder why he didn't enlist Dr. Phil to help? Remember when the Today Show and Katie and all were gaga about his book, The Ultimate Weight Solution? Those were such promising times...it almost felt like all of America was going to get on the bandwagon. Now, if I had a new years' resolution to lose weight and I wasn't TOTALLY committed to changing my life to do it, a book called "The Three-Hour Diet" would excite me to no end. If I were that kind of person (and I was), I'd buy anything if it promised me that I didn't need to work that hard. I mean, the diet only needs to be three hours long?!? Of course, when you read through it, the message is FAR different. Smart marketing there! Ah...but more people buy those books than actually READ and APPLY them! Thank God Bill Phillips came on the scene when he did!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (89 posts) at 11:34 AM:
I think the sad thing about Al's story is that it is the AMERICAN story. Lots of people looking to surgery to "fix" themselves after years of ignoring their body's needs. They end up dropping weight fast but they have so much skin that they need more surgery. I haven't seen one photo on tracker, no matter how big the before photo was, that had sagging skin after their transformation. And at the end of these transformation, you have an exercise and nutrition expert and enthusiast. I can't believe our Surgeon General isn't advertising BFL!

Body for Life Forum Message by jeremy (1073 posts) at 11:34 AM:
I agree that Bill is the one that started. On the other hand talking about the 2-3 hour rule is crucial rule of eating. I tell people if their diet or nutrition plan does not involve eating every two to three hours then it needs work. This is a fact and I am using this in the Nutrition program that I am writing. I dont think I am stealing the idea but I do use BFL/EFL and several other books for Nutritional Advise. What is my point? Im not sure just rambling

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (820 posts) at 11:37 AM:
They didnt enlist "Dr." Phil to help because his book was a joke and he was sued for it. I mean come on, the plan called for 22 pills daily at $120 a month!

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (623 posts) at 12:34 PM:
As for Gastric Bypass patients and gaining weight....yes, their stomachs are smaller. Yes, they are SUPPOSED to eat less. HOWEVER...over time, their stomachs stretch (like everyone else)...it is a muscle...and we all know how muscles stretch....including our stomachs. Gastric Bypass is not a final cure for anything. It is a tool to help people who are morbidly obese to start living a healthly lifestyle. They are still human, still have the same problems with food. Judge what you want....we are all human. It is best to truely understand something before making comments on it. This board is wonderful, but when it comes it other diet/exercise programs and weight loss programs, we are a bunch of poo-poo'ers and doubting Kathy's. Other things work too. We just all love BFL ;)

frontal abs;  completed two sets of 12,10,8,6,12

obliques;  completed two sets of 6,4,2 on each side

no way to add resistance to the ab-roller. doing the drop set (besides the fact that it's encouraged in the workout section of BFL)....because I've done ZERO ab work in the last 3 weeks. Body for Life Forum Message by krush2112 (225 posts) at 11:31 AM: I am ready for success....are you?
Hello Everyone and happy new year. I joined tracker last July and I enjoyed the wonderful support of this forum while I utilized it. Unfortunately illness, followed by stress, laziness, and just plain lack of motivation steered me back to my old ways. I have no one to blame but myself. For as long as I can remember, I have been battling with my weight. I even remember being a little girl in elementary school, worrying about the fact that I was chubby compared to my friends and peers. I suppose I've grown accustomed to being chubby. After all, my life has been ok with those extra pounds..... But has it really? This new year's weekend I reread Body For Life and Eating For Life. It hit me once again. I AM NOT LIVING LIFE. These extra pounds on my frame are a reflection of my life and what I think about myself. It shows that I am comfortable with being mediocre.... I have become comfortable not making the most money, I have become comfortable not being a leader, I have become comfortable not achieving my dreams....I have quite simply become too comfortable skating through life. Well I've decided that I am not comfortable with being only a fraction of what I can be anymore. I can and will have the most healthy and beautiful body I can possibly achieve. I can and will follow my dream of owning my own business. I can and will be the most beautiful bride I can possibly be this year. I can and will compete to win the 2006 Sea Otter Classic circuit race. I can and will be successful at every goal I set for myself. Period. I am ready to have success in all aspects of my life. As the Army says, I am ready to "Be All That I Can Be". :) So join me everyone. Join me in getting out of your comfort zone. Turn your dreams into truths. We all have the power, we just have to have the want and the need. So... Want success! Need success! Be a success!

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1535 posts) at 03:14 PM:
Amy - I have your answer...... I work the concessions at the Palace (my husband is working there for tonights game, in fact) to raise funds for our daughters' dance competition costs. You don't want to eat there, ok??? Yeah, it smells good, but, honey - don't eat it. One good option is at the Grille (I think it is stand 110) They have a garden burger that is really good (tofu, black beans and corn in it just will have to get rid of the top part of the bun- actually I think it is white...just eat the burger). Beer - it is so expensive!!! For the price of one beer, you can get 2.5 bottles of water (yeah, the water is way expensive, too, but less expensive than the beer - oh yeah, bring a water bottle cap with you in your pocket - it is an NBA rule that we can't give out water bottle caps). During my last challenge and during this one even though they feed us before the fans get there, I didn't eat any of the food. If I can handle smelling and giving this food out to people all night without eating and partaking (yeah, smelling the beer, too, sometimes I just want to stick my head under the tap) then you can do it too!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Young Guns (1544 posts) at 03:30 PM:
hey I can see chocolate, pretzels and some natcho chips from where I'm sitting right now. If I can hold back from touching them then you can certainly walk past a concession stand where you have to pay UNBELIEVABLY high prices for stuff that you know in your heart is pure garbage. C'mon it's just a matter of will power. You made a commitment to do this (BFL) and now you need to fight off all those little demons inside your head and as nike says JUST DO IT!!!!

And some of them are drunk and stupid! Just like the Cavs fans! So, just suck it up, save yourself about $25, and don't drink the stuff. I got a Palm for myself for Christmas this year. (Actually bought it in October, some things should be done sonner than later..lol) Anyhoo.. It's an amazing tool. I was diagnosed with adult ADD recently. Looking back, I've always had it, but was never diagnosed as such. I just always thought I was an ahirhead who couldn't get her crap together no matter what. (Which is where the depression came in for people who have been around long enough.) SO, to make a short story painfully long, PDAs are the best tool ever. This (along with Adderal) keeps me sane. Well, I found a BFL program for it! It slices, it dices, it sings a little toon. OK, maybe not that much, but it's pretty dern handy, lemmie tell ya. I plan to be using this puppy! You get a 30 free trial offer, than it's $20 if you want to continue. Thread: My negative self talk and why I don't stand a chance... (346 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by SparkleBerry (36 posts) at 01:12 PM: My negative self talk and why I don't stand a chance...
Hi all, I am just being depressed and sad...this is the self talk I am giving myself today...I don't stand a chance against myself. I am afraid of failing. I have had the BFL book for like 4 years...I am only fatter even though I have the key. Why would it be different this time? Dr. Phil says the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior...so why am I going to lose it this time? Why won't I give up this time? Why won't I sabbotage myself this time? All the times in the past this has been what has happened, so why will it be different? Throughout my teens I called myself fat (even though I wasn't) then in my 20's I actually got fat...so now I believe it. For almost 20 years I have told myself I am fat, and now I am just believing I am a fat person for life!!! I am sad because I have everything I want. I have a great husband who works his ASS off so I can have my big house, and stay home with our three beautiful kids. And I can't even be a thin attractive wife for him. I know men are visual, and I know he would love if I was thin (even though he never complains)and I just have not been able to do it. I am jealous of every thin person I see. I love hearing someone gained weight. I make jokes aabout my weight and butt. But really it is making me so sad. For so long I told myself it is not what is important, that it is a shallow desire, but then I realize what my weight is robbing me of. I am not as confident a person. I always tell myself if I was thin than I would try this...etc. And I wonder how much of my thoughts are wasted being sad about myself and my body, and being jealous of others... With all this negative self talk, I don't stand a chance. Am I alone here? What can I do to MAKE myself a success this time???? SAD Depressed person that already wants to give up and go get some chocolate and my TIVO remote...

Please Sparkle don't give up. I know it is easier said then done but you have to replace those negative thought with positive ones. Start picturing yourself the way you want to look. If you make a mistake or fall off the wagon it is not the end. Pick youself up and start again. One day at a time. One meal at a time. Whatever it takes... DON'T GIVE UP! As long as you are alive you are still in the game.

sparkle I wish your the best of luck this year. Unfortunately it sounds like you have some serious depression. I think the best advice that I can give you is to seek a therapist and heal your insides and then came and kick butt at the bfl challenge. This challenge is 99% mental and if you don't have a clear mind then you will inevitably fail and this will only hurt your already fragile self esteem. Good luck with your ventures and keep coming here for support.

Negative talk and thoughts are habit, not a way of life. My dad is the worlds worse at being negative. It is easy to get discouraged. You can change your habit. Motivation is the key. Find something that motivates you. For me it is the thought of how I feel and how tired I am all the time. I have completed the challenge before and also have started the challenge before and quit after a couple of weeks. I seem to do better if I look at short term goals, rather than long ones. Take it day by day or hour by hour. I really have to focus on this when first starting. If not, I will be packing in a cheeseburger and shake in no time. My goal at this very moment is to have a protein bar at 3pm. Nothing else matters. After 3pm I will focus on my next goal of eating right for dinner and then a protein shake at 9pm. I know your pain and struggle. You can do it!!!!!!

The hardest part is starting, so get off your butt turn off the TV get started!!! Girl, I so know how you feel. I battle my own demons every day. Let's get one thing out of the way right off the bat. Girl.. you are georgous!!! Even though you're not a size 4, you have a great shape, and incredibly beautiful eyes! great hair (I'm so jealous), you really do look great just like you are. I only wish I looked as pretty. OK, now on to the thoughts. I originally started a challenge goodness only knows how long ago. I made up this screen name because that's what I wanted my husband to say about me and my new sexy bod when he came back from Iraq.. um, well.... he's coming back in 2 months (from a year tour) and I am just as fluffy as I was when he left. I was doing well, then BAM.. off the wagon I lept. Well, the wagon is always going to be there for me to get back on. But first, you need to stop telling yourself that it will never happen, or it won't. How do you do that? You may need to go see someone. I have had my share of pills, and they are a very valuable tool. They don't fix the problem, but they lift the cloud of emotional doom so you CAN pick yourself up. Don't make the mistake of assuming that you can get yourself out of a funk all by yourself. Talking to someone or getting help with meds (or preferrably both)for a while is a really good option. If you want to PM me, I'd be more than happy to help you out any way I can. I have been there too many times to mention. reach out to get all the help you can. I'm here if you need me :)

Hey Sparkle! I know what you mean, I found Body-For-Life the year that Porter Stevens won. Constantly depressed even though I've got everything anyone would ever want. And always waiting for the future and time to do something I've always wanted to do... Now I'm 300 lbs when I started my first challenge 7/8 years ago at 245 and have tried almost every year since. Hmmm... Past predicts future I'm doomed! But wait, I looked around at the people around me. This is just come to the realization over the last year. Everyone around me wants me to have whats best for ME. And they get mad when I don't have it... Then there are those people that have much less than I do that do so much more. Look at Julie Whitt, the girl had crap for lungs, granted I have asthma but I don't need no stinken transplant! Then she writes how selfish we all are that can't finish: If she can go through the pain of a transplant and God knows what kind of treatments and meds, and we can't even lose weight for our health! Then look at my kids, just starting to make decisions regarding life, and they are making the same decision I would have! NOT GOOD! So now, I look at others wanting me to have what is best for me and how crappy I treat myself. What would Julie do? What do I want for my friends? What do I want for my children? Who do I want my children to use as a rolemodel? Then with all that and what I came to realize: The the world is behind me! I can be there for my kids! I will not be constantly angry and will smile more! (Had to actually practice a smile in the mirror) I will respect myself and others will respect me not only for what I have done for them or for work but what I represent and have done for myself! One thing with all these thoughts, You can work through them one hour at a time and it will get easier! AND YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Everyone is filled with self doubt, you have to CHOOSE to not listen to that and do what you have to do! Love and Laugh! Steve

Sparkle, here, complete with html formatting is a post I put on the guestbook regularly about self talk. Maybe it will help. Heck, maybe it will help all of us! God bless--and QUIT THAT!! HOW DO YOU TALK TO YOURSELF?

O.K., so you don’t really talk to yourself—not out loud anyway. But you certainly talk to yourself in the way that you think about some things. And how you talk to yourself in your thoughts will tell you nearly everything you need to know about your likelihood of completing a successful transformation. Self-talk reveals attitudes about yourself.
For example, a thought that says “I must have the approval of (fill in this person’s name) in order to feel good about myself” tends to show that your sense of self-worth is not very high. Someone with that kind of mindset will often do about anything to please others, but usually ends up being overly sensitive to criticism, withdrawing from others to avoid their disapproval, and ultimately ends up in depression and anger. So, a transformation that begins with the goal of obtaining the admiration or acceptance of another usually winds up with the person worse off than they were when they started.

A person who says to himself that he must meet certain standards in order to feel good about himself creates a fear of failure, an attitude of perfectionism, a tendency to manipulate others to achieve success, and usually ends up with a progression consisting of avoiding healthy risks, becoming resentful of others’ successes, withdrawal and depression.

An attitude that is shame-based, one that says “I am what I am, I can’t change—it’s hopeless” writes its own self-fulfilling prophesy in a challenge.

The most difficult mindset, though, is the one that says to itself “those who fail are unworthy of love and deserve punishment.” What makes this one so difficult is that almost no one recognizes they have it, even though it’s pretty common. It is just such a silly way of thinking and acting that no one thinks they could be that way—yet watch how people treat their selves when they fail, and you will see many who truly act like they are unworthy of love and deserve punishment.

So, what kind of a mindset does it take to do a good challenge? Here are a couple that jump to my mind right away:
1. Porter Freeman’s mindset. When he looked in the mirror, and when he considered the challenge, he saw a different person than the one he knew he really was . And he said to himself, “I have more character than that.” He didn’t just transform, he revealed himself, as the man he knew he really was. That’s why he wanted it, why he made it a priority, and why he succeeded. He recognized the good in himself, and set out to reclaim it.
2. Stephen Cater’s mindset: He saw his father lose his health, and pay the ultimate price for it. And he found in himself a desire and strength to be different, to turn out different. In his challenge, he not only honored his father, but ensured that his own family would not have to gather at his bedside as he died of a self-inflicted disease.

Men and women with the attitudes of Porter and Stephen can’t help but be winners. That’s because they are doing it for the right reasons, out of the appropriate mindsets. Because they are acting with right motives, they also can’t help but give away what they’ve found, by helping others any way they can. They are wonderful examples of the universal law of reciprocation. They are, in a word or two, true champions.

You guys are helping me a ton...your posts are making me cry. I am going to print it out and read it daily (except my first post...) First off, as far as the severe depression goes...it really is not me. I am just sharing my saddest self talk, but overall I would rate myself as content-happy...but I am being sad today, and a little PMS is not helping. I did not finish what Dr. Phil said after that comment aabout best predictor of future behavoir is past behavior. He said, the best way to mold your future is to change your past behavior by daily changing your habits...soon enough your past behavior is the good behavior you want for your future... Steve, so motivational what you had to say. you kind of remind me of my father. He has dealt with obesity as long as I remember him. Once up to 400 lbs. But we love him so much and see it in him that he can do it, but I believe the one thing that is holding him back is he has lost the confidence, and it breaks my heart. I have three little kids and I think of what example i am being to them. They are young and I hide my behavior from them, but I know they will follow if I don't change. Daaang girl, thank you for your nice compliments, I REALLY appreciate it. You and I have about the same stats...we should track eachother and team up. Michigan Mike, thanks SO MUCH for posting that. Truly motivational. I haven't grabbed my TIVO remote or my chocolate, just finished my third BFL meal for the day and now I am going to put my baby down for a nap and get my butt on the treadmill... FIGHTING THE DEMONS IN MY HEAD will be my new goal, I didn't realize how much they are holding me back...

I'm so sorry to hear you're feeling so sad! I too believe that you CAN do this. I read a thread on here about failure being a prerequisite (yesterday?) - different perspective than Dr Phil. Sorry I don't have the link, but in essence, it was saying that we need to fail in order to learn how to succeed. So you've screwed up. Big deal. We all do, we're human. What's important is that you forgive yourself, pick out the lessons you've learned from that, and move on. It's not an "all or nothing" game. Speaking as another mom, I'm guessing you probably give a lot of yourself to your husband and children... Do you have anything left over for yourself? Chin up, it's one step at a time! you are not doomed to fail!

OK, not to take away from any of the fantastic support and advice you've received from these great folks, but I think I might qualify as the poster child of negative self-talk. The expert, if you will. And here's what I've learned -- about myself -- in the past year. BFL is the first true attempt I have ever made to take control of my eating and exercise habits. Like you, I had the book for about four years before I finally put it to work. That was a year ago, and I started right here on this site as far as seeking support and guidance. It wasn't but a few weeks after starting BFL that I was seeing tremendous changes in my body -- I was losing fat on my hips and butt, seeing muscles pop out on my stomach and feeling strength in my legs. Other people saw it, too, and I got a lot of encouragement. Then I started binging, just like that. Success fueled me a bit, but it also hit a nerve, and when that nerve started to twinge I quieted it with the only thing that worked: food. At first, I was horrified. I came here and gave a detailed report of my binge and was flooded with support from people who said they'd been there, just let it go and move on. I tried to move on, but it worsened. The more I binged (not like a bulemic would binge, but like a food addict would binge -- tasty, high-fat, high-sugar, high-carb foods), the more that nerve would ache. And still, the only thing that seemed to numb the pain was more food. I then recalled the first time that I used food to comfort myself, and it was when I was only 5 or 6 years old. I was home alone after school (like I always was growing up) and out of fear, loneliness, boredom, desperation I ate an entire box of Starcrunch snacks (caramel-chocolate-rice-goo). The whole box, gone in a matter of minutes. Then I put the empty box back in the hiding place where my mom had it stashed. At 27 years old, here I was resorting to those same patterns. And it showed up, of all times, when I was finally succeeding at a weightloss plan. I started to think I had an eating disorder. I quit BFL and sought counseling for depression and possibly compulsive over-eating disorder. What I've discovered is that I'm not depressed (I've been there, and been treated, before) and I don't have an eating disorder. What I have is a messed-up self-image. It started when I was a child -- someone long ago made me think I'm not worthy of respect, unconditional love, encouragement or risk. I was taught that I should not do something I cannot do perfectly and that I had much to be ashamed of. Those things happened when I was very, very young, and even though I've been in a completely different environment for more than eight years with a phenomenally loving, supportive husband, my self-image is stuck. I allowed myself to transfer other peoples' perceptions to my own. And I didn't even know it. I'm the one who feels I'm not worthwhile, that I don't deserve support or encouragement and certainly shouldn't be allowed to struggle with something if I can't do it right the first time. No one else feels that way -- it's all me. And after realizing this, I took another look at my eating habits and the way I look at my body. I have accepted that there is a deep level of discomfort buried inside that frequently requires TLC. Eating certain foods (caffeine, chocolate, etc.) gives me a temporary physical high that soothes my emotions when it seems nothing else will. When I restrict my food intake (as on BFL), I become more aware of this pain that is always with me and am now learning to soothe it or ride it out in ways other than over-eating. It's a process. Meantime, all that negative-self talk that you described is a habit I have to be aware of in order to overcome. I have to listen to myself harder to realize when I'm doing it. And I have to really, really, really try to get a positive word in edge-wise. Alrighty, I've hijacked your post long enough. But I wanted to get out all I could in the hope that you'll see a ray of light in there. It's easy to say "I feel the same way," but sometimes it helps to have a little proof. :-) Hang in there, 'kay? Be wary of projecting your own self-doubt onto other people (like perhaps thinking your husband's disatisfied with you when really YOU'RE disastified with yourself). I'm SO guilty of that tactic and man, does it help when I know in my heart that my husband does not judge me the way I judge myself. If you ever need support, I'm right in the neighborhood -- send me a PM and I'll be happy to offer a shoulder to cry on or anything you might need. ((hugs)) Karenna

Sparkle, girl, First, Dr Phil isn't even a Doctor..I actually think he's just a certified bully. He only has a show because of Oprah! Watch Oprah instead. Second, you CAN help being your own worst enemy; Without going into detail, I used to be just like you. I went through years of therapy and then i got my hands on a book called FEELING GOOD, and it changed my life. Its esssential premise is that we all have a set of "tapes" we run in our head, and they are generally based on at least partically false assumptions. It teaches you how to break those negative thoughts that seem impossible to break. You can't just stop... you don't just "stop" thinking them. You have to practice recognizing them and thinking them, and re-route your thinking. But back to BFL: like Harleyman said, BFL is great for self-confidence because it is so short-term goal oriented. Each moment you can say: Look, I completed my workout. I ate my breakfast. Every moment is a benchmark. Every moment is a choice. I know this is a BFL board, but I would definitely check out that book. big hug Robin

Sparkle I started challenges and didn't finish them, and then one day I decided I'd finish one and I did.. And Dr Phils behavior words were going through my mind the entire time, as I sat there in my tub after my 1st workout circling in my dayplanner the start date, 4 and 8 week dates, and 12th week end, I was thinking "doing THIS again, riiiight" but I completed the challenge, and you can too because the FUTURE hasn't happened yet and YOU are in control. Fate or the past do not control you.. only you have the control.. don't think of past failures as anything but choices you made, they didn't just "happen" and they won't happen again unless you choose to. I believe you can do it, you have the key.. maybe an additional support group like TOPS would help you too. Good luck to you, you CAN do it!!

Sparkleberry, "Never let defeat have the final word." That phrase was what got me out of bed for the first few weeks of my first challenge. I've got a long way to go--but it's so much better to be pro-active than to wait for something to come along!! Wishing all the very best! Sounds like most folks beat me to the punch in offering great support and advice. My two cents would be that to be successful at this or any transformation, it really is all mental. A person must determine what it is they want, determine the price they must pay to get what they want, and plan for how they are going to pay that price. Mental focus is a must, the be all and end all. One never fails doing BFL, they fail if they give up trying. I promise you if you spend the 12 weeks working on the mental image, interior vision while doing your best on the nurtition and exercising, you will come to enjoy and need this lifestyle. A goal is not something unpleasant you should be rrunning from- it is an exciting vision which should be drawing you towards it like a magnet. Please really give deep thought as to what Bill wrote in that book, and read it as often as you have to. Success to You, Yours in Health, Kerry

If I wanted to be fit more than I wanted to keep the weight on, I would be. I get some kind of payoff being where I am right now. Think about how Julie Whitt would love to be alive today, in your shoes- ALIVE- she would not complain but would rejoice in the gift of life and would triumph over quitting and lead the best life possible. We all have the right to live as we please but then should feel satisfied in our choices. However once we decide to make the change because we are truly disatisfied we should remember the beautiful person Julie Whitt was, struggling with her health but doing her best and encouraging others to do the same.

Thread: Headphones that can withstand HIIT (105 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (28 posts) at 02:07 PM: Headphones that can withstand HIIT
So I did my HIIT today and everything was great, EXCEPT that those goofy earbuds that came with my mp3 player kept jumping out of my ears (or to be specific, only my left ear, but annoying just the same). I know there are all kinds of replacement headphones out there....has anyone found any that they LOVE that stay on while running? Eileen

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (322 posts) at 02:53 PM:
I've had to replace mine a few times and I always buy the Sony ones at Circuit City or Best Buy. They have Sony ones at different price points, but I always get the ones that are around $15, not the cheap $10, but not the $50 ones either. They seem to stay in my ears without any problems.

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (801 posts) at 04:05 PM:
I LOVE mine -- they fit over your head and are sports headphones, so they use some water (sweat) resistance. The speakers fit in your ears. They're made by Sony, and the model number on them (don't have the packaging anymore) says "MCR-A35."

Body for Life Forum Message by Greg_H (2 posts) at 04:15 PM:
I also use the Sony Sport headphones, since I sweat like crazy. The ones I use hook over the ears with the strap that goes around the back of your neck instead of on top of your head.

Body for Life Forum Message by Coppertop (9 posts) at 05:31 PM: Re: Headphones that can withstand HIIT
I use Sony headphones from Target, they go over the top of my head and fit into my ears, I run hard with them no problem. I never could use earbuds, they don't stay in.

Body for Life Forum Message by jseven (28 posts) at 07:35 PM:
I have a fantastic set of Nike ones. I think they are made by phillips. The cord runs out the back, not the side. Real good for working out and running. They are even "sweat resistant". I got mine at Best Buy.

Body for Life Forum Message by VegasGuy (70 posts) at 03:24 PM: New Gym Frustration
I recently moved from Las Vegas to Spokane, WA. During the whole "move" thing I fell off the BFL wagon (3 months worth). So now that I am somewhat settled into my new surroundings I figured I better get back on track. Oddly enough, my Gold's Gym membership DID NOT transfer up here with me. I had to re-sign up here and pay all the usual fees, plus I had to cancel my membership in Vegas. Well, let's just say that the Gold's up here is NOTHING like the Gold's in Las Vegas. Don't get me wrong...the people up here are awesome. MUCH more friendly than those in Las Vegas. BUT, the gym here is very old and outdated. The equipment is so far below the quality of equipment in Vegas. Not to mention the fact that a lot of the cardio eqiupment needs works and the place is pretty dirty. So today was very tough. I am a die-hard Precor Elyptical machine kind of guy. I get my best cardio workouts on this machine and can really hit the SHIIT. LOL Well, there is only ONE Precor machine at my new gym and it is probably close to 10 years old and is in need of some serious calibration. I tried 4 different kinds of cardio machines before I finally gave up and just used the treadmill. I ended up doing an hour of cardio because I just didn't feel like I was on track. I can tell that this is going to be a dificult challenge. Thanks for letting me vent! Hope everyone had a better cardio day than me! Chris

Chris I found that the treadmill gives me a much better workout then the elliptical anyway. Give it a shot you might like it.

Body for Life Forum Message by brancammom (1 posts) at 03:36 PM: New here and need to vent and get advice...
I am new to this forum and to this website, but not to BFL. I started it about 3 years ago with some success, but stopped after a series of horrible life events pushed their way in. I was up to 204 then by practicing BFL I got down to 182 and felt pretty good. My husband and I had been having "intamacy problems" due to my weight and I lost weight to improve "things", but of course life got in the way. He lost his job, then 7 months later I lost mine. We lived in a new housing area in Dallas and because it was new and everybody was losing their jobs, we couldn't get a buyer for our house so it was forclosed on, we then moved to my hometown and I got a Govt job. He still didn't work. I was stressed, my job paid lots less then what I was getting in Dallas and the bills were piling up. I ballooned up to 224. I joined weight watchers, lasted 2 weeks. Joined a gym, lasted 3 months. I got a second job, ate more, gained 15 more pounds. My marriage was in the garbage, but I tried to keep trucking. We ended up in a tiny little trailer because our landlord of our apartment wanted us out. My hubby finally got a job. And a big head. Now that he was making more money than me he acted like he didn't need me any more. I ballooned up to 240. We stopped being intimate. I drank alot. He got transferred to Germany. So now we are here in Germany, I have no job and things got worse. Our debt followed us, he wouldn't let me spend any of "his money" although I never did that to him when he sat on his ass for two years (beside the point, I am better than that). I get sick of it, I wanted to leave him but I was here in a foreign country with two kids and a guy who had an ego problem, and I kept drinking...and eating. I got up to 257. He wanted a divorce. I wanted things to work, so I got a job. In four months, my self esteem soared! I lost 56 pounds. Then we started getting along again and he wanted me to quit. I thought "great, now I can focus more on my weight loss because he loves me again and is giving me a chance". So I quit my job. Now here I am two weeks with out a job and two kids on christmas vacation wondering what I just did. Was is stupid, am I going to go back to that depression? I started body for life after I lost some weight because I wanted to make sure I was doing this for me instead of him but I find myself writing you all this on day three, with a glass of wine. Did I just make a big mistake by quitting my job? Am I right in focusing on myself for a while? Gosh, I am probably not making any sense, I just needed to let everything out and express myself. Sometimes I think I am so weak...right now is one of those times. I felt so strong and self assured when I was working, then when my husband gave me that glimmer of things being good with us, and wanted me to quit, and promised me things would be different, I jumped at it. Now I feel just like I felt before. Out of control and unsure of myself. I need motivation. And a shrink!!!! But thanks for reading my babble!!!

B, congrats on your recent weight loss! Keep up the good work. I'm no psychologist but I would take this time to work on you and on your marriage. Feel strong because of the things you are accomplishing, not what you think you are missing. Best of luck to you. Tom

Body for Life Forum Message by NormRebs (238 posts) at 04:31 PM:
brancammom, God didn't put you on this earth to live up to somebody else expectations. Take care of yourself, follow the body for life program. Do it for yourself, not your husband. Once you get to a point where you feel great about yourself then make a decision "Whats next?" You'll have a total different view point to look from! Hang in there, we will help in anyway we can here! There are so many wonderful people here to help you succeed!

Body for Life Forum Message by amkazen (266 posts) at 04:50 PM:
Good advice to focus on you 1st, do it for you, and then the marriage. What does your hubby do for a living? Where in Germany are you and what job did you quit? I was away from my family on Ramstein Air Base for 4 1/2 months the last part of 2004. And finally, why did he want you to quit your job? Is he threatened by you having a job?

Body for Life Forum Message by Robin78745 (9 posts) at 05:27 PM:
Hi Brancanmom, First, in my opinion, yes, get a job again. Why? Because it obviously gave you something if you changed so drastically in you because of it. Whether it was self-worth, or structure, or time, it was obviously a positive change. Additionally, seeing as you ended up in a financial place you didn't want to be in the first place, there is the money benefit. Finally, with BFL...I am going to beg to differ and say stop asking yourself who you are doing it for, and simply do it. You're going to analyze yourself into oblivion. Get a journal and record, every day, at least 2 or 3 times a day. After a while, you will certainly know who you are doing it for. take care of yourself!

Well. It's day 2 and the doc says I'm sick. He didn't have to tell me, I have had a sore throat since yesterday, and today the glands on the left side of my neck got all swollen up. Yep, purty. So I'm on some heavy duty antibiotics... he didn't test for strep but says it's possible, which would make me way contagious... so don't get too close to your screen when you read this. Tomorrow I plan to still do HIIT. I physically feel ok, except for some exhaustion from not sleeping at all last night and still doing UBWO at 6am. There's no respiratory gunk, so I think it will be ok. Man, talk about a challenge! What would be easier is to just curl up in my jammies for a few days but I'm not going to. Not giving up this early in the game!

I went back to work today after the holidays, as a trainer at my local gym only to find everyone has gone BFL crazy! I have had BFL posters and leaflets in the gym for a while, but because BFL is still very low key in the UK I only had one or two comments about no-one can transform themselves in 12 weeks etc.. and despite me saying about how good it is and what I have achieved in the past, only one person was interested in it.That person is a tracker member now-check out Cliff aka reality who has downloaded his most recent photo tonight. People have also seen me change shape(most times I'm in work uniform so they don't see my shape)but a few comments have been made. However when I went to work tonight 2 people turned up with new journals and others wanting to borrow my BFL books(I have a supply I loan out),my EFL book and my BFL DVD compilation. One girl even drove to a supermarket 20 miles away tonight as they sell BFL bars, shakes and supplements. For you guys in the UK check out your local Tescos as ours sells BFL and EAS products. I'm even been asked to go into work at the weekend to take peoples before photo's. My mission for the week to get get at least another 5 starting BFL.I finish C1 this weekend and C2 starts on Monday. Good luck to everyone starting their challenges this week, Sharon

Your transformation is great! Keep up the good work. I suspect that many people (like myself last year) were skeptical when they started BFL. The hard part is getting out of the thinking that this is a New Year's resolution... doomed to be forgotten. It's a lifestyle change. You may have to remind people of that fact as they get further into their challenges! You are a great role model! Keep the ball rolling in your second challenge!

Was I mistaken or did I see where you are supposed to drink one gallon of water per day? A fitness instructor told me several years ago to drink 84 ounces per day, but that is a far cry from 108 oz. I can do 2-3 quarts, but I'm really struggling with this gallon thing. Any suggestions besides an I.V.? ;) Kathy

Try adding lemons, Crystal Lite, you have to drink your water.

You don't have to drink a gallon of water. Bill Phillips recommends 10 glasses a day, which is 80oz. If that's all you can do, that's all you can do. Many of us do drink a gallon, but you don't have to.

Crikey! Have I ever got lots of work to do - and I blame no one but me for losing all the hard work I did last year. I thought that running outside and doing weights a couple of times would at least keep me 'as is', I'm clearly mistaken.

My parents arrive in 3 months, and I haven't seen them in over a year. I want to look like the healthy woman they think I am!

My 2nd anniversary with the love of my life is also in 3 months and I want to look and feel the way we did when we met just 3 years ago.!

Most of all, I want to be proud of me, feel confident of who I am and commit for life to be the best me I can be.

12 weeks to the next challenge, I'm gonna make this one count!

Hi gang! Looks like we’re really getting rolling with the new year! I wanted to share with you one of the approaches I use to deal with some of those negative thoughts that come along when you take on the Body-for-Life challenge… I try to replace negative/bad questions with better ones. Here are a few examples… 1. Bad question: “What if I blow it again and don’t complete this challenge?” Better question: “What if I do my best and actually achieve my goals? Wow! Won’t that feel great?” 2. Bad question: “How in the world can I stick to the food plan when I’m so used to eating junk food?” Better question: “What if I find that I really enjoy eating the BFL way and no longer have a desire for junk food? Wouldn’t that be a huge breakthrough for me?!” 3. Bad question: “How in the world can I do all of that exercise, especially when I’m not used to working out?” Better question: “What do I need to do to learn how to perform each exercise correctly and how can I enjoy each and every workout? Just think of how great that would be!” 4. Bad question: “I blew it today! Why can’t I stick to any program?!” Better question: “Maybe I messed up but what’s the best thing I can do now? And if I continue to do my best, won’t I eventually succeed?” 5. Bad question: “What makes me think I’ll succeed this time when I’ve failed so many times before?” Better question: “What if I actually get into the best shape of my life?! Won’t that be an incredible turn-around?!” Hope you get the idea… The things you say to yourself and the questions you ask on a daily basis make a huge impact on your mental and emotional state. It’s crucial to do whatever “homework” is necessary to address any disempowering or stinkin‘ thinkin’ that threatens your success… Jim

Thread: Getting my spark back... (10 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jshelton (1670 posts) at 11:18 PM: Getting my spark back...
Hi gang! A couple of weeks ago, I made a couple of adjustments to the hormone medications I take to treat my hormonal disorder - pituitary failure. I must have guessed right because I feel FAR better than I have since September. I'm sure that the numerous sinus infections and the falling out with long-time friends played a part in me not having my usual spark the last 3 months - but I'm becoming increasingly convinced that my underlying hormonal disorder was the main issue... It's obvious to me now that I had been carrying a much heavier physical and emotional burden than I realized. I can't tell you how many episodes I've been through like this over the last 10 yrs. of coping with this illness. Time and again I have attributed my lack of energy and spark to other life factors or even character flaws within myself... only to learn that the problem was mostly due to illness... I need to remind myself of that in the future and not be so hard on myself... The tough part is that I don't know for sure that the illness is the problem until I start feeling a lot better. However, this time I strongly suspected something was out-of-whack with my medications even though my doctor didn't seem concerned. Thanks for all your support... I just needed to let my BFL buddies know that the kid is back... Jim

Thread: Newbie here with Breakfast question (237 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by chasblanchard (3 posts) at 09:23 AM: Re: Can you eat the egg yolks???
SupaFreak, Is it ok to eat the egg yolks as well? Or do you just eat the whites? Charles. SupaFreak said: Why don't you boil a bunch of eggs and have those for breakfast? You can have 4-5 hard boiled eggs with oatmeal or cream of wheat. Yummy. Bagels are not worth it, (to me). Too many carbs. Maybe if you do half a bagel. From what I know, cream cheese has about zilch protein and a lot of fat. So, I wouldn't eat that either. 1/2 bagel and hard boiled eggs? I use Jenny O Turkey bacon alot. I'll cook it ahead of time and put it in baggies. I have that, 2 HB eggs, and a whole grain english muffin. That's a good breakfast too. Even Kashi cereal isn't all that bad. You should give cottage cheese another try. I know, I know. I HATED it too. But, I mixed it with yogurt and now I eat it at least once a day. Really is a quick meal, it would help you out if you can handle eating it. Have you tried blending it too to get rid of the curds?

Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (484 posts) at 09:29 AM:
I usually split my breakfast up......I'll have oatmeal w/ my coffee (I limit to 2 cups while on the program) then about 1 1/2 to 2 hours later when I'm gettin ready to walk out the door I'll make a protein shake to go

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (623 posts) at 09:32 AM:
I eat 2 low fat cheese sticks and an apple. or 6 egg whites and a low carb/low sugar yogurt or Golden Pancakes (I also make lots a head of time and eat them cold, no syrup. Much better this way :) I MIGHT put a little natural PB for a little taste)

Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (623 posts) at 09:32 AM:

hey dave, i believe you only get one photo per side (front, side, back). if you are a premium member, you get a gallery and can add a bunch more. Another alternative, you can edit your pictures on your computer, all into one. That way, when it asks for your front pic, you can put your "collage" of 2 or 3 in one photo slot. Hope I didnt confuse you, good luck! We're here for ya!

Body for Life Forum Message by chasblanchard (3 posts) at 08:36 AM: Day 2 I'm excited
Hi all, This is day 2 for my first BFL challenge. Yesterday was a bit tough just getting use to the weight (amounts) to use for my ubwo. I could not fininsh one excersize and moved down in weight to complete it. Is that the right thing to do? This moring was a breeze for me since I am use to going on an eliptical Precor. I pushed it to a ten... It felt good. I have never felt like I could actually do somtheing like this but I have the roadmap in front of me. I hope that I can count on you guys in the upcomming weeks when (not if) i need help. Thanks, Charles.

Hey Charles - today is my second day too. I definitely didn't do all the reps and sets required, but I did my best and pushed myself as hard as I could - and I am so sore today to prove it! Jen me too - I had to fiddle with the weights, adjusting the seats, switching bars, etc, so it took me quite a while too, but we'll be blasting out those 46 minute workouts in no time!

Body for Life Forum Message by chasblanchard (3 posts) at 01:09 PM: Re: Thanks
Thanks guys... I bought these Nautlis dumbells they are great since you can change the weight by dialing the amount on each one. I am sore as well but i think the suppliments are helping me since i thought i would be sorer (if thats a word).... Chas. wahine808 said: Hey Charles - today is my second day too. ok, I used to post here quite a bit on my first challenge. Did well and finished the challenge. My problem has always been that I try to stray off the diet, but maintain my weight. Well, you can guess what happened. I'm back up to my starting point... time to start a new challenge. We have a few people at work doing a weight loss challenge so I have some extra incentive (aside from getting healthy). Just saying hi. Shawn

I knew I was heavy, but looking at my pics made me realize how bad it was. Yep, the camera never lies... :( The pics will be my motivation. I have printed them off and have posted them on my gym equipment. I just can't believe how much I've let myself go. I never use to be like that. But for the past 2 years, I haven't worked out once compared to working out almost everyday for 1-2 hours at a time. I was heavily into weight lifting, was into boxing, and now became a couch potato. I went from 140 to 175 in 2 years... YUCK!!! I really need to get fit and healthy again. This seems to be a great website. Lots of support. Hope to get to know you guys better. :)

when you say "taco seasoning" do you mean the Lawry's packet that you usually add to beef? Do you coat the potato slices (thin like potato chips?) and then shake it in the baggie with the seasonings? This sounds so good. I'd love to test them out on my kids.

Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (484 posts) at 11:38 AM:
This sounds good...and I love sweet potatoes.....but, I'm hesitant to put TACO seasoning on them. I'll have to try it...thanks!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (194 posts) at 07:31 PM:
yep, taco seasoning like Lawry's. Sounds funky but tastes great!! Just a pinch of cinnamon, and like 1/3c taco seasoning for 2-3 medium sized potatoes. J likes sweet potatoes to begin with laurie, but he really loves them like this. Just make sure you buy sweet potatoes, and not yams.
