So, on the Splenda front. I mentioned that I had terrible allergic reactions to it, including IBS... well I found that sucralose (Splenda) is secretly in other foods. So frustrating, you really have to read the labels on everything.

Yeah sucralose is everywhere now, especailly in suppliments. Its better than aspertame though.

Agent69...oh no, not taking all the fun out of it, just people don't always realize that it can be expensive :-).....I still had lots of fun and I WILL do it again! :-)
I brought my bodyfat down to 12% (I should have brought it down to about 10%). The average is anywhere between 9% up to 14%..it all depends on your "look"...I have to bring my bodyfat down much lower then most women because I hold fat in my back and glutes, which is not good.
I didn't maintain my contest look for too long at all..my goal was to "get pregnant" and since my bodyfat was way too low, I needed to plump back up as quickly as possible.... :) In all honestly, you cannot maintain that "look", since, there's techniques that are used that are only temporary and should only be done when doing a competition...these techniques are playing with your water intake and your sodium levels.
When I competed I weighed at 119 lbs, a month later, I was up to 128 lbs. :-) And now I'm back up to 132.5. However, once I start competing again, my goal is to stay within 8 lbs of my competition weight.

Im usually the only girl in the weight room as well. You will find if you stay focused and keep your eyes on you and no one else your workouts will rock!!!! More than likely no one is looking at you, and if they are, inspire them with your hard work!!!!! I've had a couple of guys at different times come to me as I was leaving and tell me how impressed they were with my intensity!

OK, so I'm not doing it exactly as TNT says, but I have two low fat Nutrigrain waffles with 2 tbs of all natural peanut butter every morning. For me, it's the easiest way to get in the morning meal while trying to get out of the house.

I have one of the larger George Foreman grills and it works wonderful. It literally cuts cooking time down by almost 45 mins. Mine cooks approx. 4 4oz boneless, skinless chicken breast in 9 minutes and it taste great.

OMG YES with the G. Foreman! It is a MUST! Get one that has removable plates. My Mom has the big one that has a temperature setting and she said she hardly uses the temperature thing. She got me the slightly smaller version that was like $60.00-$69.99 Can't remember they had them on sale at Khol's the day after Christmas too.
I had the regular one old style and let's just say we loathed cleaning it. We replaced it with our Christmas gift the one with removable plates and life is sooooooooo good! LOVE IT! BTW our other one was 5 years old and still going strong. So they last! My advice what are you waiting for? ;-)

I really like mine but I got the WROONG ONE!! It doesn't have removable grills so it's a PAIN to clean!! Like we don't have enough dishes to do while on BFL!!! If you get one make sure it has a removable surface for easier clean-up!! You will seriously love having one!!

Someone gave me a tip for easy clean up. Place your food inbetween parchment paper and you will never have to clean it again. I have not tried this yet because I cant seem to find parchment paper. Anyone know where to get it? Is it with the wax paper?

Yes, you get the parchment paper in the same aisle as the wax paper. I just ordered the GF grill with removable grills for easier cleaning as TNT suggested. I can't wait to use it. By the way, Parchment paper is awesome for cookie baking...you know on your free day:) It keeps the bottom of the cookies from getting to dark.

My Mom had one a while back shortly after they first came out and loved it. The food was good and it was easier to use than an outdoor grill. I just picked one up(knock off) this past weekend, returned it due to it having been broken in the package, then got a new one that seems just fine. Hopefully, I'll FINALLY be able to use it tonight!

I have the biggest George Foreman Grill. The one with the temperature settings.
I usually get the grill really hot for about 8-10 minutes then I put the meat on then turn the temperature to the lowest setting so that the meat will cook slowly. I find that it doesnt dry the meat out and makes for a tender and juicy cut of meat...

I've got a small one. No removable plates. After cooking while still hot, but unplugged, I just lay a couple of wet paper towels on it and close it. The heat makes everything just sizzle right off!! Easy clean up.

Im my experience the food turns out even more moist than on a regular grill. Just dont over cook things. The times in the book are based on 1" thick pieces.

Udo Erasmus has a real good article on his thoughts for CLA which seem to conflict with many people I have talked to.

I bought a bottle and have not taken it since I read his article. He seems to have a lot of evidense against it and people I have talked to say it works but isn't wonderful. So cost / benefit analysis to me was not worth it for me.
Note: He does create his own 'oil' so there could be a competitive thing going. But I trust him.

I have no problem at all in getting thru the earlier portion of the day, I eat breakfast, 3 hours later I have a mid morning meal, 3 hours later I have lunch and by 3:00-3:30 (2 to 2 1/2 hours later) I'm famished ....... YEEEEESSSS, I'm eating plenty at lunch.......I'm getting in a good portion of protien, carb & veggie at lunch.
Today I had 1 1/2 cups lettuce with a portion of chicken breast, 1/4 cup salsa and 4-5 low carb tortilla chips, like I said PLENTY-------that was 2 hours ago.
I'll go ahead and eat something (usually a protein bar or cottage cheese & fruit).......then I'm fine until supper time (about 6:30-7:00)..............then I don't get hungry again
AT ALL.......but I have a little cottage cheese to get that protein my body needs thru the night.
I didn't have this problem on the first challenge........so, it's rather irritating.

Girl..1.5 cups of lettuce and 4 or 5 chips arent enough carbs IMO.
Try for more of a balance and see if it helps. I get that way sometimes too and when I started trackin my food on fitday I realized my carbs were WAYYYY too low.

I think the 3 PM "sinking spell" is quite common, especially for those who are working during the day in a stressful environment. I cannot explain why you didn't experience it the first challenge but for most people it is really the biggest threat to maintaining the diet and your sanity as well. It might well be (I'm speculating here) that for most of us, by that time in the work day there has been a significant amount of stress that has taken place. The combination of STRESS plus the normal time to snack being together, it really makes us feel like we're famished! I know it's not a normal snack, but on that time of the day I often take some brown rice, about a half cup, along with a couple of cups of water, and then either some white tuna or a small piece of chicken breast and it gets me through to dinner, which is usually about 6:30.

You might want to add some peanut butter, or a few nuts, or some good, healthy fats. Make sure you are eating ENOUGH. It may be your body telling you to up your portions a bit. That's a good problem to have!! People think I'm starving myself, cuz I'm losing weight, but I eat around 1800 calories a day.

1/4 cup of the instant oats with 1 scoop of EAS 100% Vanilla whey protein powder. Mixed with a "little" water to make it like dough consistency. Add 1 TBS of PB tastes like oatmeal cookie dough. It's consistency should be thick.

Oatmeal Cookies
1/2 c oatmeal
1/4 egg whites
1/2 scoop protein powder
2 tbsps applesauce (unsweetened)
2 tbsps cinamon
Splenda to taste
Stir everything. Let oats soak up whites for a while. Make into four cookie shapes on sprayed cookie sheet. Bake (I use the toaster oven) at 300 for 10 minutes.
I eat these every day for a snack.

1. Yoga? Can i still do it? If so, when (weight day, cardio day, both?)
2. Ok, im a self proclaimed cardio bunny. It obvioously wasnt helping with my goals so thats why i came to bfl. Anyways, it so hard for me to just go to the gym and do weights. I did 10 min LI elliptical today after my legs and it acutally felt like it helped stretch them out. Is this ok?

I think as long as you are following the BFL exercise program, you can do yoga and elliptical afterwards. As far as when to do yoga, I'm not sure it matters.

Why don't you just do the elliptical for 10 minutes to warm up before the weights? (just don't go crazy on the resistance with it). I would say yoga you could do whenever as long as you do the BFL workouts and it dosn't tire you out or ruin your intensity.

OK since I have started the official challenge for Figure competition & BFL challenge I have been going all out on my workouts and diet. Strict as can be. Workouts doing all the cardio and pushing myself way out of my comfort zone. I have finally learned what it means to do this. Lift and LIFT HEAVY. As Nikki says "Don't waste my time...c'mon now". LOL. I don't think I am lifting that heavy right this moment but for starting out I am pushing myself and it is heavy to me right now. As before I would go easy on myself for the first week. Nope going all out. If it feels a little difficult I add 10-5 more pounds to make it really difficult. Some cases more. Usually I would start out my leg presses at 150lbs 3 set 12 reps. Nope I warmed up with 150 and then moved up for the last 2 sets at 200lbs. Not much but like I said it was a lot for my untrained legs. So I moved out of the comfort zone.
I am now officially one of those people that you hear and see when lifting. I find a focus point and when it gets tough I make those grunting sounds lol. I used to feel stupid doing that and embarrassed. Now I don't give a damn. I have felt very focused this week. It is funny I get in this zone while lifting all I am concentrated on is what I am doing at that very moment. It' slike tunnel vision. I know what I want and I know what it is going to take to get it. HARD WORK! So, as a result of just 3 days of this I am tired and I still have to go do some more cardio, throw some laundry in the wash, clean the kitchen. GAWD this is only week one! I know I can do this it is just adjusting to it.
It's funny because I came to the realization I now know what it means to push yourself out of your comfort zone. It is not easy! It's hard and can be very frustrating. Esp when your used to being able to push out an extra rep or two. But when you push yourself out of your comfort zone your sometimes lucky to make it to 6-8 and when you grab in for one more it just is not there! It is rewarding though, knowing you are working hard! Not to mention the physical feeling you get. Whew! I do find myself craving that feeling. Dizzy cross eyed feeling LOL.
Now I am starving! I swear! I have to eat every 3 hours! By hour 2 I am ready to eat and waiting for that 3rd hour is hell! ABSOLUTE HELL! I know it's just my body adjusting to it all. I mean I have gone from my stellar performance in December: 3 whole workouts and well eating was 50% on and 50% off YEA BABY! To my January: so far Lifting as heavy (in most exercises) as I was when I stopped training for the holidays. An added 1-2 hours of cardio a day with workouts. Extremley clean and precise eating. Now let me mention this is not ass busting cardio and I split the time up through out the day. So don't even think that I am doing an hour workout and then 2 hours of cardio. LMAO now that would kill me! Anyhow I just wanted to let you guys know that I have been super focused. I will keep you guys posted.

That really depends on who you ask. Bodybuilders will say that 1g/lb is the minimum and the goverment will say that this is way too high. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of protein according to U.S. government standards is 0.38g/lb
I eat close to 1.5g/lb

I think the RDA is wrong but I am no professional! LOL I am aiming for 1.5g per lb per day to really feed the muscle but it is hard to get it all in. I just started using fitday.com and think I will have greater results by tracking everything that way. Like Chuck said though, it depends on who you ask and I would say the 1 lb rule is pretty good.

I would also like to add that if you are following BFL and eating 6 protein portions a day it would be hard not to eat 1g/lb.

Weirdest thing happened this morning. Did my squats then one set of leg extensions. Proceeded with my dead lifts and then went to do my final excersise for hamstrings and started doing lunges...by my sixth or seventh, I went down and when I began going back up I felt my right leg (quad) starting to tighten and then all of a sudden heard a crack, snapple & pop (and no it wasn't the rice krispy men), I lost my balance and felt burning sensation in the upper right quad area. It's tight and hurts but it is not unbearable. Any ideas on what I could have done? Should I lay off of it for a week? I know it's hard to diagnose over the internet but if anyone has had any similar experience, I would appreciate you feeback and comments.

I remember seeing a documentary on cosmetic surgery a while back that had one woman get a breast reduction and another one get a breast enlargement. The doctor said that, in his experience, the ladies who get breast reductions are infinitly more happy with the results.

Yeah, my husband is a little nervous about the whole thing. It may be done before he gets back (IF it's approved for insurance coverage). I read him all the responses to the thread, hoping to make him feel a little better about how many women were so happy with the results (notice there are no responses from what their husbands had to say..lol). All I got from all of the reading was "Clarification, I don't aggree with the more than a handful is a waste." and "I don't even have a picture of them, you'd better not post one there." LOL
He supports me with whatever I want to do and he doesn't want me to be in pain. I am sure he'd miss whatever they take, but HE doesn't have to carry them around and do cleavage checks. I actually have a code wor for my boobs trying to escape from my shirts. All of my friends know to say "pickles" when the girls try to make an unscheduled appearance. It's pretty amusing, really. As long as they're not too drunk they are quite subtle and no one notices. We've had conversations about their dog named Pickles. We've had comments made about how they do/do not like pickles. Or what brand of pickles is the best. Add too much alcohol and I've had one scream "PICKLES!" as she points to my chest while bursting out laughing. Mind you, they've never made it past the "double boob" phase (where it looks like you have two boobs on each side because they are poking out the top of the bra), thank goodness. But it could happen one day if something is not done.

Welcome back DG!!!! I can help you. I had a breast reduction in 2000. It was the best thing I ever did. I totally understand about bigger not being better LOL. Now I do have to warn you. After the breast reduction. I lost more breast tissue doing BFL. I went from a C cup to a B cup. Of course seeing as I slacked for 2 months I am back to a C cup LOL. Please feel free to PM me. I would gladly give you some of my butt. Thankfully, it is now shrinking a bit, but the more weight I gained, the more it started crawling up my back!!! My boobs are a different story, they used to be small and perky 34B's now they are pathetic deflated 38DD's so I know what you are going through. I have a feeling mine are going to get smaller, and more deflated as I lose weight so let me know what doctor you go to so I can schedule mine to be lifted!!!

I haven't really kept track of my spending on this, but I'd estimate several hundred dollars on the BFL book, myoplex, and some specific EAS supplements.
I don't consider my gym membership a BFL expense - I've had a membership for years, but a lot of the time not used it, or not used it wisely.
Same for vitamins and general supplements, I was doing this prior to BFL anyway.
As far as costs when NOT following BFL or a healthy lifestyle...
I'd estimate several thousand dollars on doctors, naturopaths, osteopaths, physios, and chiropractors as I developed more and more back/neck/shoulder problems and suffered from long term fatigue as I ate unhealthy food and put on more and more body fat.
And tens of thousands of dollars in lost income through having to take time of work (I work on contract so every sick day is lost income for me) and several 6-12 month long breaks between contracts due to long term fatigue, stress, and back problems.
And don't even get me started on the money spent on hardly worn clothes that I kept growing (or bursting) out of ;-)
So for me BFL, and a healthy lifestyle, is definitely WORTH IT!!!

P.S. Interesting thread helpdial, I reckon lots of people look at a BFL lifestyle and think quality food (especially all our protein) and supplements are expensive... but it's nothing compared to the potential costs that come with poor nutrition and a lack of exercise.
And I reckon I spend less on my myoplex and supplements per day than a lot of people would spend on their morning latte :-)

Well unless you are doing an official challenge, you dont have to buy any suppliments at all. A good diet plan and intense workouts are much better than any suppliment!
You might also want to consider how much money you might be spending on fast food and other expensive food sources. When you make your own food, its much cheaper it just takes longer.

my estimate is 180.00; the cost of BFL & BFL, protein powder, protein bars & creatine. This cost is for both my husband & myself.
I don't include the cost of food, for the most part my purchasing didn't change except for the increase in the # of eggs and the amount of cottage cheese purchased. I deleted the junk food I was buying and replaced it with more healthy food.....about evens out.
And I don't include my gym membership, because I've had it for a few years.
The amount of money I will save on medical expenses will far outweigh the amount of cost of doing BFL.
My husband is diabetic (as some of you know) and this is the most regulated his blood sugar has been in years....his levels had been ranging from 280-350 pre-BFL and in the last two months it has been in the range of 150-180; in addition he lost 19 lbs. the first go 'round.
BFL hasd given me far more than it has cost me.......and in 2006 I will gain even more.

If I looked at my ‘outgo’ as an spending, I think I’d go nuts. So I look at it as an investment. I am investing in a better lifestyle. I am investing in my health. Well so far I have spent $0. I spent about $150 on supplements back in 2003 but EAS reimbursed me $400 so I made money, lol. They also gave me $1000 in vouchers that I have just now used up. I did buy protein powder from Walmart but I have figured out how to make all my meals average about $1 so I am not spending anymore on food then I was before BFL. It is totally worth it to spend money on bettering yourself!! I mean what is the point in saving money if you won't live long enough to enjoy it?? Kind of ironic how most people spend their lives, huh??? I for one plan to LIVE!!!

Sporty I really like your response as well as others. This is an investment to yourself that will last a lifetime. I have spent some money on supplements but if they make me stronger and healthier then every penny was worth it.
I took my kids to Mickey D's today to play in the playground and to see the people that go in there overweight and spend $6.00 on a crappy lunch is beyond me. It was all I could do to not eat anything, but seeing everyone gorge themselves with fat was enough to not eat anything or spend the money on it.

My older 3 keep me on track everyday...they always ask if I did my workout & if what I'm eating is allowed...
I told them that everytime I finish a challenge we will have a mini celebration party on free day & they get to plan the day...in their mind...it is a done deal...which really helps me stay focused...we have a count down daily!

OMG - I totally feel your pain and have terrible road rage. It's so frustrating when people are passive drivers, not paying attention or off in their own little world of driving rules.
It seems that most people have no idea how one small action impacts everyone behind them. Like slamming on their brakes etc...
My husband recently got a brand new cruiser motorcycle and was riding down on a beach drive 30mph. He and another driver, in the day time mind you... stopped for pedestrians and a young girl behind them had turned around to look at her baby (and she must have been facing away from the road for awhile because they were stopped for a while) rear - ended him. His new bike that he had for 3 weeks almost totalled.. he was fine thankfully just so upset.
THEN!! He got the bike back for 1 week and was riding it home on another 30mph road and a driver in a VERY well lit area started to pull out in front of him, stopped and then just went ahead an pulled out... he had to dump the bike. Fortunately, he was ok again but the bike was out of commission for another 6 weeks. And it's no longer new!
Long story short ;-) It's crazy out there on the roads!

I use it and mix it into my oatmeal-(use 1/2 serving). Its soooo YUMMY.
Ive asked a few experienced fitness friends and they said its OK to use occassioanlly and the fats are good fats.

I haven't used it but have heard a lot about it. From what I've read the fats are wayyyy to high, even if they are good. If your goal was to bulk up then it would be great but not so much for weight loss. Plain whey protein powder is much better IMO...you could always liven it up with Splenda or natural pb(which makes everything great!)

I was like OMG when she told me that. I mean I had read the label and saw them but ooohhhh my mind wanted to believe this tasty treat was going to help me lean down. LOL... I was having a lot of problems leaning out while using Muscle Milk. Then I was told why. She also asked:
"Are you trying to gain weight?"
Yea I got it from all ends when I told her about the MM LMAO. Sorry I had to share my experience with it. It is darn tasty though but if your trying to lean out I would stay away from it or maybe have it on a cheat day?
As far as protein shakes I would suggest sticking with Whey protein Products. EAS 100% Whey is pretty tasty better than there other Whey they had. Also Optimum Nutrition is really good esp. mixed with skim milk mmmmmm just a whole lot less fat than MM. I strictly only use water right now though and they still taste pretty good. Hope that helps. ;-)

Yes he rocks!!!!! I LOVE HIM!!! Here is what I wrote at the beginning of the season.. on 8/29/05 hmmmm I hate to say but do you believe me now?;-)
Ok, I am so looking forward to this football season!!!!! I have one name for all of you VINCE YOUNG! I have watched this kid from the moment he has started with UT. My husband has told me about him since he was a senior in high school. This kid is a freak! He is amazing and his talent is beyond anyones belief. Take a good look everyone this is your next NFL superstar! Mark my words! His jaw dropping plays will literally do that to you as you watch him. I know the first time I saw him play I was like holy mother of god! Where in the heck did this guy come from. Needless to say, I am so excited about this upcoming season. Who wouldn't be with a player like this. And who knows with his talent being so incredible, almost mystical this might be his last year with us as a junior. As my husband said, "he could just end up being the #1 draft pick as a senior, and he would be nuts to pass up a 9 mil a yr. contract". I have to agree.
It is amazing to see how much this kid has grown and matured as well. Not only in his plays and talent. But also his physique. He was almost gazelle like when was a freshman. Now look at him. I guess if you gonna be a Quarterback and a Running back you better get some mass on you. Esp. if your gonna be running the ball with those 250 & 300 lb lineman going after you! I mean look at this picture below! This happens so much through a game. And he has become even more clever about when he chooses to run with it. I mean it is like shaaabammmm and no one can catch him. And it's another score by Vince Young. Yeah, every one don't blink you don't want to miss this one! So if you can, even if you are not a UT fan, be sure to check out a game if you can. Might want to check this guy out before he really hits the big time. I know it has been a pleasure watching him since his freshman year. Yeah he was out on the field as a "freshman", thats gotta tell you something! HOOK'EM HORNS!

It was a really good game, much better than last year's. However, if the officials had tossed the hankie on Vinnie, who was down before he flipped it to the other guy for a TD, we'd be singing a different song - Conquest!

Keep in mind that a portion of the good foods have less calories and fat and all the other nasty things that keep people overweight than a portion of bacon cheeseburger from the fast food place.
While it feels like you're eating a lot of food, you're getting less of the junk that keeps the weight on, so you still lose weight. In addition, since you're full, you don't have the desire to binge on junk, so it's all good :)

In eating for life, if there's no other protein usually 2 whole eggs are a serving, or (better) 1 whole egg and 3 egg whites. Although the servings there are for an "average" person. So if you're a petite female, you'll need to scale that down, or if you're a 6'5" male, you may need a bit more.
Scrambled vs. hardboiled doesn't matter as long as you're not scrambling in oil or butter.

Ok folks, I'm preparing my grocery list for my first week of my challenge. One thing I refuse to do is eat nasty. I love my food to taste yummy nad learned a long time ago you can eat healthy and no sacrifice taste. That said, I'm not sure about my condiment option with BFL. I want to stick to the program faithfully, at least for the first challenge, and I'm not sure what my options are.
Fat-free mayo?
BBQ Sauce?
Ketsup?
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. The only thing I have to rule out is hot sauce and other spicy stuff. I hate spicy.

Im sorry you dont like spicy stuff because I believe spicy food is AWESOME :)
That being said, I think one of the best condiments out there is worcestershire sauce. It tastes great on scrambled eggs and is very low cal/sodium.
Ms. Dash is also a great option to flavor your food with. I also use those 3 you mentioned as well. The only thing I try to stay away from is full sodium soy sauce and full fat salad dressings

Here is a list of condiments I use and have had success with BFL:
Ketchup - I bought one of those squirters like they have at fast food places and it comes out in a really thin line versus a giant glob, this way a little goes a long way.
Mustard - any kind
Relish - in tuna
Fat Free Mayo - no more than 1-2 teaspoons
Newman's Low Fat Balsalmic Vinigrette - up to 2 tablespoons on a salad
Montreal Chicken/Steak Seasoning - for seasoning grilled meat
Mrs. Dash when I'm really watching the sodium or on super lean down eating
Cinnamon - oatmeal, apples and cottage cheese
Butter Buds or Molly Mc Butter
If I think of any more, I'll let you know.

Oh yes, BBQ sauce, I use that on BBQ Chicken Pizza, I don't see a problem with 1 Tablespoon for dipping chicken, but if you use Montreal Chicken Seasoning, you really don't need anything to dip it in. Also, I did want to mention that Mrs. Dash is on the spicy side, I think. I don't mind spicy, but my kids won't eat it.

if you buy real balsamic vinegar it's fat free and then add a tbs of good quality olive oil you've got an awesome salad dressing that's high in efa's which is good.

Well, when you make all of the pancakes using 1/4C. scoop you have quite a few pancakes...8 to be exact. So, should we both really have 4 pancakes...:0/

I never really measured them into 1/4 cup scoops though. I make them in single servings (.5C Cottage cheese/.5C oatmeal/3 egg whites) and make one huge pancake for myself :)

I guess if you over cook them they get harder or tough. if you boil them for about 15 to 20 minutes you should be good. The yolk inside should be dark yellow or like a grey yellow when boiled. Just keep water in the pan and keep them covered.

I've settled on this method, and it turns out perfect (yellow hard yolks) hard-boiled eggs every time (thanks to Martha Stewart):
1. Place eggs in a large saucepan. Cover them with cool water by 1 inch. Slowly bring water to a boil over medium heat; when the water has reached a boil, cover and remove from heat. Let sit 12 minutes.
2. Transfer eggs to a colander; place under cool running water to stop the cooking. Eggs can be peeled and served immediately. Remaining eggs, with shells on, may be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
(Only I don't transfer my eggs anywhere. I simply dump the hot water and refill the pan with cold water.)

I cooked up 6 servings this morning to save time this week before school. I did this once before and put the protein powder in it before I put it in the fridge. Then I just scooped it out in the mornings for breakfast. It was kinda gritty and didn't really seem "right" to me. Is adding the protein powder to the cooked oatmeal and storing it for a couple days bad? I just put the oatmeal in the fridge plain this time and figure I can add the protein individually. Is there a problem either way? Sugestions??

I tried it once and was told to make the protien shake then use that as your liqued in the oatmeal. I added it after it was cooked and it was bad.

I have this almost every morning and I just put my scoop of protein powder in with the water to cook it in the microwave then when it is done I add about 1/8C of 1%milk to make it creamy. This morning I used my banana powder and when it was done I put a tablespoon of applesauce in it. It was really good!

It would probably be better to mix UN cooked oatmeal and protein powder, then put them in little tupperware bowls, then in the morning just grab the little bowl, add your water and nuke it for a minute or 2. You could even put the cinnamon and/or Splenda in ahead of time, too. Would that be fast enough for ya, speedy??

OK, it's like I've never done this stuff before..lol. I used to buy frozen turkey burgers at Sam's. I got some tonight and cooked two. Only THEN did I peek at the label, just out of curiosity. These are NOT the same pattied I used to get! These are like 320 calories!!! 21g of FAT! and 27g of protein!!!! HOLY SCHNIKIES BATMAN!!!!

I would hate to see you waste money and not eat them, but 21 grams is a lot of fat for one meal, for me 21 grams would be close to my daily maximum. 1/2 would be okay but that would be a small meal portion of protein.
I would eat a whole one with some low glycemic fruit, be extra careful on your other meals and get rid of them quickly or save them for your free day (boring...) or feed them to the kids (right!) or give them to the dog if you have one.
You have to be careful with those turkey burgers, they are tricky. Maybe you could buy some extra lean turkey at the grocery store and make your own to freeze.

That is a lot! I wonder why yours were so fattening? I have some in the freezer called Honeysuckle White Lean Turkey Patties and they are 160 cal, and 8 grams of fat. You oughta ask for a refund! LOL
Since were on burgers, I just tried some of the BEST veggie burgers...they are "Morning Farms Grillers Prime" and I think it is way better than a regular patty. It has 170 cal and 9 grams of fat. I had one for lunch today on a single piece of ww bread, lettuce and some salsa. DELICIOUS!

Here's a quick true story... I did a challenge and lost about 24lbs. Then I went into "maintenance mode", Now i'm back to where I started 208lbs. :)
I'm sure some people can ween off the diet and eat little amounts of unhealthy foods, but I have proven to myself that I can't.

I have always done 5lb increments on everything except for smith machine squats and the leg press. Sometimes I have to do 2.5lbs increments, you just need to listen to your body. I think 10lbs is too big of a jump.
Nicabod, I have the same problem with 15lbs being too easy and 20's being too heavy. I have tried switching my exercises to another machine to build up more strength and then going back to dumbbells. I have heard they make 1lb magnetic plates that attach to dumbells to help with that problem.

People at the gym should be wondering WTF you are doing on that elliptical trainer (or cardio machine of choice)
the saliva in your mouth should get sticky and icky :) making water taste like fine champagne

In order to get the right weight to challenge my legs, I end up straining something else.

Hmmmm. It is really difficult to tell you what is the problem without seeing you actually doing the lift, but I have just a couple of thoughts. One is that the more the weight swings out in front of you the more stress is placed on the low back and the shoulders area. It is KEY to make sure that the bar starts out right at the shins and never leaves them. Don't let it out in front of you at all. Second, make sure you have somewhat of an arch (flexion) rather than a rounding of the low back and carry the head up and forward, looking straight in front or even up during the entire lift. If you're still feeling some stress in the shoulders, try reducing the weight. Really, the deadlift is as much or more about the back than anything else. If you can, the best bet for legs is barbell squats, or Smith machine squats, and extensions and curls.

You really should not be feeling it in your neck. Are you keeping your feet less than shoulder width apart and knees just barely bent? This is how I do them for hamstrings and I don't feel it much until I'm done...then they kill me. Try lowering your weight a bit (maybe 2 15 lbs dumbells) and watching your form and not bending your knees when you let the weight down. I love doing these for my hams, they have really made my legs stronger!

I disagree guys. Deadlift is a compound full body exercise. When done correctly it places stress on many different parts of the body. It targets the legs and the lower back, but I have found that occasionally I also feel it in my neck, shoulders, forearms, hips, and even (strangely enough) my lats and obliques. Squats are GREAT but deadlifts are essential too for a well rounded , full-body core strengthening type of fitness regime. Lift Hard!

Answer to your ? I will attempt seeing as I can't see you do them. Are you rounding your back on the way up and down? If so that is your source of neck problems. Are you looking down the entire time while going down and up? Instead of looking straight forward at one spot in front of you the whole time up and down. Are you starting out with straight legs instead of bending down to get the BB? When you should reach down with bent knees keeping your back flat and straight shoulders square not falling forward. Also on the way down you will have a slight bend in the knees as well not completely straight legged.
Go through that check list. Your doing one of those things to make you neck hurt. I know what pain your talking about and it is not sore pain. It's from lifting with incorrect form. ;-) Be careful I hope this helps some.

Well, I have done something wrong. Obviously not as correct as I thought. My neck is so sore right now I can barely move or turn it to the left. blah. I hate this kind of dumb soreness. I hope my Lower Body kills tomorrow from DOMS just to make up for this!

My whole set is with bent knees--bent knee deadlifts....I bend down pick up the bar and lift with my legs, keep the arms straight and in the same position.
Yeah, I don't know what I did. But it was wrong, even though I thought I was right. grr....hate that. I'll try again though keeping all these things in mind.

This is not in the BFL book, but rather the little read book they send with the BFL registration...or at least this is how I got it. I also got another copy from Cheryl when she was sending out the t-shirts she got from BFL.
They have four exercises for each body part....under Hamstrings is Decline Leg Curls, Bent Leg Deadlifts, Lying Leg Curls and Straight-Leg Deadlifts.
Of course this little book does not have page numbers, but you can't miss it...there are only 4 exercises and 2 pictures for each exercise.
Does anyone else have this books? Deadlifts are very much for the Hamstrings.

Okay, there are so many different deadlifts out there. Regular, Romanian, Sumo, Stiff Leg aka straight-leg...etc
Regular deadlifts are not for the hamstrings. Its mainly a quad and back exercise although it is a compound movement and it involves a lot of different muscles.
The best video I can come up with for a straight-leg deadlift does not go down far enough in my opinion. His form is perfect for hitting the hams, he just needs to take it all the way to the ground.

We are in the process of s-l-o-w-l-y putting our house back together after Hurricane Katrina blew in, so I am doing A LOT of painting this week. So far this week I have painted two large bedrooms by myself, two coats each (since the drywall is new). AND like a lot of others, I started a new challenge on Jan. 2. I have kept up with my workouts "by the book", but I am wiped out tonight. Does week 1 of BFL normally wipe you out?
I have 2 more bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, the foyer and then ALL of the trim and 20 doors to paint still. I better be really buff by the time I finish with all that AND this challenge!

Not only does it ad your carb portion, but it makes it a nice fruit flavoured snack!

Use what ever amount of H20 that creates a consistant texture you find most palatable...then follow with additional fluids if needed...
I use 15-25 oz of H20 per/pk of MyoPlex original, deluxe & sport!
EAS Precision Protein powder & Muscle Drive HP...Most of the time I use about 6-9 oz H20 for every 20gm of Whey isolate protein. If it is a blend...usually more water.
With a nutrition bar containing 20gm of blended protein, Usally at least 15oz H20 is sufficient to transport the nutrients.

how does doing a few push-ups a day equate to over-training? If you're going to failure then I'd agree but doing say 20 4 times a day is the same as walking a few extra miles a day. I don't see how this could equate to overtraining. I'm sticking with what I said I'd do 80 per day. 6720 for the 12 weeks. If we were so worried about overtraining then if your buddies wanted to play a game of football with you or basketball would you say no? Hell no you'd play how is doing a few push-ups everyday any different. I'm no army brat but I'm pretty sure that when in bootcamp for the army you do quite a few more pushups than this.

Im wit' you Young Guns. For me, I dont think doing 5-10 pushups, 2 or 3 times a day is going to put me into overtraining. I did this for over 20 years when I played Ball and (knock on wood)never got an injury. (It actually helped my game)
I understand the concern of overtraining and I completely understand if some of you want to reduce or quit the challenge.
But personally-Im stickin to my pledge of: 2500 in 84 days.

Sorry I really don't think I could honestly have the energy if I'm hitting 9's and 10's to do more than that. I have to stick with 270--but I might be able to do more. I'm taking this a step further even I'm going to make a pledge sheet up and see if I can a bunch of people to pledge 1/10th of a penny or more for every push up I can do successfully and then give the money to Julies foundation. That'll be a minimum of $6.70 per person if I can get anyone to sign it. I'm going to make the pledge sheet tomorrow (my day off). BTW I agree that WORKING the same muscles 2 days in a row can be overtraining, but I don't see doing a few push-ups as working the muscles hard enough to be considered actual work. Maybe I'll change my tune on Saturday (day after chest) but I doubt it.

Young Guns, your right in Boot Camp we did alot more push ups than what we are talking about here, however there the point is to get you to see that you can do them, if you try (part of the mental breakdown process). and to f**k with privates. and you would be suprised at how many Army guys have rotator cuff issues after a few years if they dont learn to rest. I have ammended my challenge to 2,500. I will just do my 60 every other day. On the off days I will do my 100 ab excerises for the ab challenge.

I commited to 60 per day. Personally I do not think that doing 30 pushups in the am to get the blood flowing and 30 pushups before bed is gonna overtrain anyone.

HA! You'll all laugh...after posting my last response and finishing up some work I brought home, I went to the floor and started my "girlie" push-ups...and GASP! 1- girlie pushup (I did it! I did a push up) 2- ggggggggggggirlie puuuuuuuuuuushuuuuuuuuuuuuuup...(8 more to go) 3---grunt, moan, gasp...etc.
HOWEVER, I did do ten.(my goal for the late evening) Did I just commit to 5000? My arms are going to look yummy after this challenge! Now I just need to find a way to keep that promise :)

well, it's no big deal, I was excited to try it but I was only doing it b/c it was my gym I belong to, but I can't see me (right now anyway) chasing runs, but maybe one day I will, I never dreamed I'd use a computer, or loose the wt I packed on or stop eating cookie and drinking a night cap or thought I'd love lifting weights, so you never know, never say never.

I don't think I can agree that Bill Phillips was the first to package and introduce an eating plan based on glycemic index, palm sized portions, frequent meals, etc, etc, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE BFL, and I think Bill Phillips has done the BEST job of putting together a complete program for eating and exercise, but a lot of the BFL eating plan is incredibly similar to the Zone, first published a couple of years before Body for Life. I'm not suggesting that the Zone was the first either, I imagine Barry Sears took at least some of his plan from information that was already out and about at the time.
I'm just glad to see any "new" diets that reflect frequent eating and considering glycemic index. Anything that will help people out there stop this crazy attitude that all they have to worry about is the fat content, as they merrily digest the carb content of several days eating in one meal!!!

That's probably one of the reasons that I never get bored with chicken breasts and broccoli every night. I hear you- I'm a creature of habit as well. Can you ask the management why they don't have new machines coming? Plus, I thought if you moved more than 30 miles away from the old gym that they would transfer your membership for you. Wow. Thank you all for your comments. I was pretty depressed yesterday but today I am doing better. I decided I am going to actively pursue employment while I focus on myself. After the boys go back to school next week and I have a little more "me" time I think I will be better. Today was a good day, I have eaten clean all day (my day is almost over by the time most of your day begins) and I had a great LBWO and also did 45 minutes of cardio on top of it so I am back to feeling positive again! Thanks for the support!

I'm right there with you too - I got some chest junk - throats okay for now. My HIIT wasn't very H today either, but I'm glad that I went and did it even though I didn't feel like it. I think I sweated off an extra couple of pounds though - I've never felt to hot (not in a good way) when working out before.

Jim, the what if's are a great motivation,
The one that says what if I like the BFL eating,
well today I took Bill back to the Dr. from when he fell down the front steps, and I drank a shake before we left. and brought my protien bar in case I needed it later.
So the Dr orders an untra sound and we got 2 hrs to kill, Bill is hungry so we go to Cracker Barrel, My most favorite place in the world.
Bill ored his big breakfast and I ordered coffee.
Yep, just coffee!
When Bill finished eating, I said, Did you enjoy your breakfst baby and he said yeas and No, it was good, but I felt funny eating all this good stuff in front of you because I know how much you would love to dive into this stuff.
I said, Bill, It's not bothering me, really, I have something great waiting for me in my purse for my 12:30 meal and I am really just enjoying my coffee, playing this little game ( you know the little games they put on the table) and being in your company.
After we left, Bill said you know, I think some of you is finially rubbing off on me. I just realized how much grease I just ate. then he held my hand and hugged me right there in the parking lot and said I really admire your will power, you have really blocked all the junk food and greasey food out of your mind, you are doing good and looking great and I am so proud of you!
Then he said, you know what? I looked arould in the whole resterant and I noticed that you did it again, you were the prettiest girl in there.

Just got back from my workout at the gym and it hit me that I enjoy working out more than I have for a few months! That is pretty good evidence that the illness was dragging me down - not just physically but emotionally...

When I first started BFL last year, I did get headaches. My body thought I was starving it because the meals were so small, and until it figured out it would get more in just a couple of hours, it made me feel like I was going to DIE. LOL It got better in no more than a week. Stick with it, you'll be feeling great soon!
And I use egg whites, even though I go through eggs really fast, they're still cheaper than egg substitutes.

Plus you have to understand if you are eating healthy for the first time your body is getting rid of toxins that you have accumulated through the years. This also may be the reason for your headaches. Give it some time, once you have cleaned your system you will see the headaches go away! You also will see your energy levels skyrocket! Check the egg isle in your supermarket for egg substitutes, there are many different brands.

I am very prone to migraines, but I always get one the first few days I start eating right... I kind of think it's my body adjusting to using the "fuel" in a different way (i.e. smaller portions more often vs the big three a day)

I don't know if you used to drink alot of coffee or diet soda but the decrease in caffeine could also be causing the headaches. I had only 1 cup of coffee yesterday (I usually have 3-4) and I had a rip roaring headache by 7:30 pm.

Flower, the other night I woke up, I was dreaming or maybe it was a nightmare, but I WAS popyee!!
I had his arms, no other muscles just his arms, and the best and funniest part was it was arms like a stuffed doll. In the dream, I was telling Bill, I guess I finially ate enough spinich, LOL !!
funny thing is I always did eat my spinich, really, when I was a kid in 6th grade I remember, at lunch time, trading my fried chicken for spinich.
Mama never had a problem with me eating everything on my plate, lol!

My girlfriend does Atkins and she only really loses about 10lbs because the only exercise she does is walking. I try to get her to stop but she's adament that it works for her. She has to stay on it to even maintain any weight loss or she gains it all back very quickly. The stuff she eats is crazy. All kinds of cheese and sugar free chocolates....Can we say FAT!!!! You can see that she lost weight but she still looks soft. She started this thing like last year and all she's ever gotten was a 10lb lost. While I started in Aug 05 and look much better. So who's on the right track..... I did really good, eating like a pig on Christmas Day but back to BFL every other day. I did 9 days straight of cardio, plus my workouts. I only missed two workouts, 1 UBWO and 1 LBWO. And, I lost about 5 pounds, down to 173. This is the 11th week of my 2nd Challenge and I hope to get below 170 pounds by Jan. 14th. Yesterday a coworker brought in 4 dozen Krispy Kreme donuts for our group. I resisted the urge to eat a donut yesterday. But, today, a coworker brought in those grocery store cookies that have M&M's on them, and I caved in and had 1/3rd of a cookie, only because the cookie broke in thirds instead of in half, because I was going for a half cookie. Then, in my meeting this morning, a coworker brought in a dozen bagels! I caved again and 1/2 a bagel with a small amount of smoked salmon flavored cream cheese. Then, I had another 1/2 a bagel. Also, my office mate shows up to work after my meeting with 4 dozen bagels because there is a "tradition" that when someone has a birthday or something else happen to them they have to bring some food in. Then, a coworker brought ME a plate of home made chocolate chip cookies as thanks for having done some work for him the week before Christmas. I had 2 of those and then an hour later I had 2 more of those M&M cookies! I am glad I leaving work early today for physical therapy on my calf muscle so I can get away from this food!! UGHH! It is not my fault!! :):):)My co-workers are so bad. I have resisted almost all their food since July 4th when I started BFL but today? It is not my fault......is it? :):)

Something very strange is happening to me and I have no idea what it is or what it means. Maybe someone here has a clue? I hope.
Ok first off let me give you a little history. 4 years ago after months and months of excruciating pain, I was diagnosed with a herniated disc in my thoracic spine. I had God awful pain on the left side of my back that started in the center of my back and radiated around to just about the center of my chest. My ribcage protruded beneath my left breast. I was put on steroids and pain meds. I was told no lifting anything heavier than a gallon of milk for 6 months. If this helped then I could avoid surgery. So it worked. After about 2 weeks I was pain free.
Now since this injury, if I bend a certain way, I get a muscle spasm below my left breast. I know this is bizarre. You can actually feel a big knot there when it happens. Sometimes it really hurts alot. Other times it just feels like a really tight ball.
OK so today while doing crunches, it happened and while I was pressing on it and massaging it to get it to relax, I could feel this "popping". It felt like bubble wrap being popped. I could feel it underneath my fingertips and inside as well. Does anybody have any idea WTF is going on? What is this? Obviously if this continues, I'll need to see a doctor but I was hoping that maybe someone here could help me figure this out. Maybe someone here has experienced this as well and knows what this is?

Is the popping in the chest region? The first thing that came to mind was subcutanteous crepitus/subcutaneous emphysema - tissue has gas trapped in it and makes a popping/crackling when pressed. But that's usually associated with stab wounds or gun shots, or blunt trauma, and I presume you haven't been stabbed or shot recently since you are currently doing crunches. I googled subcutaneous crepitus and there was info about something called pneumomediastinum, and that was the crepitus caused by the Valsalva maneuver. The article I looked at was at www.physsportsmed.com/issues/2005/0805/leiber.htm. I think I typed that correctly. I think a phone call/visit to the doctor would be a good idea.

The popping is located below my left breast. Just to the right of the bony area. This is the area that I feel that muscle knot up in and then there is popping when I push on it to work the knot out. although right now there is no knot and I started feeling around and pressing and there it is but now its located at the edge of my rib cage way over on the left and the popping feels like its coming from underneath the ribcage. OK FREAKING OUT HERE NOW!!!

Lisa, I don't know if you believe in chiropractors or not, but my husband had something similar to what your describing. He was told he had a herniated disk in his back and the pain radiated around to his rib in the front. The chiropractor told him his rib was out of place and fixed it after two treatments. But again, don't self-diagnose, get an expert opinion.

BFL requires self-discipline----that's it----in a nutshell.
Problem is our level of self-discipline is different---day to day and person to person.
Thanks for the post Dana. Everytime I try to get someone interested in BFL, they shy away from it because of the effort that you have to put forth.

I had a hard time getting in 6 meals since I hate cooking and was busy cleaning almost all day.
I also didn't do so hot on water. I NEVER drank water before so I am making baby steps...yesterday only 3 bottles. I am going to do better!
I took a bike ride and did ab exercises. Not true BFL but a definite improvement from sitting in front of the TV eating ice cream!

I've been away from the Tracker for a few months, so I don't know if this has recently been posted or not. But since January is the time we see more people doing BFL for the first time, I thought maybe it would be a good idea to get this back in circulation. I believe that the person who originally posted this was Bob White, but I do not know for sure. Enjoy!

Paper Towel Theory
Let’s assume you go out and buy two rolls of paper towels, each with only 84 paper towels on it (one for each day of the challenge). You put one roll aside, and keep it for future reference (your “before” picture). The other one represents you (I’ll call your paper towel you “Ed”). The cardboard core represents the lean Ed. The towels represent the fat that is covering the lean Ed. For sake of argument, let’s say that Ed wants to lose 21 pounds of fat, so (84/21) each sheet represents a quarter-pound of fat lost. Let’s also assume that Ed loses his fat equally during each day of the challenge.
Each day during the first week, you tear off a sheet of the BFL Ed, representing the fat he has lost for the day. Next, you put BFL Ed next to the full roll (“Big Ed”) for comparison. No noticeable difference!!! Even at the end of the week! This can’t be working for me! But, being a good Ed, you continue to follow Body-for-LIFE. At the end of weeks two and three, you continue to compare BFL Ed to Big Ed, and still notice very little difference. That Bill Phillips guy MUST be joking!
But Ed is determined! He works hard! Hitting his 10’s…eating his six daily meals. Three more weeks go by, the sheets peeling off day after day, before BFL Ed finally gets up the courage to stand next to Big Ed again. Holy Myoplex! BFL Ed is skinny! OK, not skinny, but less huge!!!
By the end of the 12-week Body-for-LIFE program, BFL Ed is down to his lean dream, or somewhere near it. BFL Ed is happy. We are happy. Big Ed - well he’s not so happy.
The lesson to be learned is that fat, like paper towels, comes off in sheets. When you are heavy, you are big around (perhaps a big roll or double roll). And when you are big around, that fat is spread over a MUCH larger area - just like that outside towel sheet. The closer you get to the lean you, the more each lost pound of fat shows, because it is spread over a smaller area.
While the outside sheet may only cover one layer of the roll, the inside sheet may go around 4 times. That last sheet looks like it gives you 4 times the results of the first sheet, but in reality, the results are the same - your perception is just different! And you’ll never see the inside, if you aren’t patient while the outside is coming off!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I thought intuitive eating was the way to go. I shopped for whatever food struck my fancy, and munched on whatever, whenever I wanted.
Unfortunately, instead of eating greens, lean proteins, and apples, I thought peanut M+M's and oreos were what my body "intuitively" wanted. So I gained about 10 pounds in the course of a month.
When I awoke from my "intuitive" stupor, I found BFL. Thank goodness! What have you all tried in the past that made you find BFL?

I have found that food is the only "women's intuition" that you can't rely on!
I personally think that most "diets" will work. People that say that they've tried everything and nothing works really mean that they have never stuck with one long enough to get where they need to go. This has been my experience, at least. I have done EDiets, Jenny Craig, pills, counting calories, and just plain ol stop eating (yeah, THAT was brilliant). Granted, some were just plain stupid, but they all WOULD have caused me to lose weight. BFL is the one I enjoyed the most, it's the one that makes the most sense to me, so it's the one I'll stick with.
Hey there bride to be !!! I was so very much like you!! I wanted to eat what I wanted to eat....Pizza( at least once a week) ate.
But then I started a job, that has me sitting all day and I knew I had to change or I would end up huge.. I found BFL/EFL looking for a healthy cookbook in Barnes and Noble. And it's been sweet bliss ever since !!!!!
oh Man- I've done 3 day diet, neg calorie diet, hotdog diet ( no real hotdogs), jenny craig, shots, pills, shakin a chicken in the middle of the road- I've done them all....

the last thing I tried before BFL----was hypnosis.......I have a strong will....BUT it didn't work for me.
Hypnosis? I tried that once- Frank the X-rated hypnotist came to my college. Needless to say I was cracking up too much to "go under."

talking about hypnosis.. I have been seeing a counselor (why, yes, I am wacko, thanks for asking). She apparently thought I needed to learn how to relax.. (pfftt, I'm FINE...WHYYY!?!?!) Ok so anyways, she had me do this thing to a tape she made and I was feeling pretty darn relaxed when she slipped this sentence in: "I will eat less and feel better about myself" in a very calm, soothing tone. Right in between the ones that say "I am at peace". WHAT?!? First, I thought you were supposed to feel good about yoruself no matter how fat you are, and second, how the hell did she know how MUCH I ate? Bleh.. My relaxation did a 180 at that point. I can feel my blood pressure going up just typing this..lol. All I could think of was keeping my butt in the chair and not giving her a lecture of how NOT eating enough was part of the reason I was fat in the first place! Oh man... After that, I would be terrified of going under hypnosis. Knowing my luck, I would start to cluck like a chicken every time I saw chocolate. Then Rie would be shaking ME in the middle of the road. Hey, that would be a pretty good workout though...
Oh yeah, you can add Atkins to my list as well. Tried that too (sigh). I actually lost weight, but started to have really bad abdominal pains. I had my gallbladder taken out and apparently it really is usefull for something... whowoulda thought...

*At 14 I decided to drink diet pepsi for 1 month, and eat nothing. I started eating again only because I started buckeling over with stomache pains; plus I was up to 2 liters a day in diet pepsi.
*At 15 I joined Nutri-system weight loss centers, and went from size 12 to size 5....They put me on a 1200 calorie a day diet, and I would wake up in the middle of the night and find my way to the fridge...I kept off the cravings as long as I could.
*I thought I was desinted to be fat ages 17-27, when I partied and drank and had fun. My weight went from 128-150 up and down the whole time. At my lowest weight I was taking diet pills in the morning and having a couple of drinks for dinner....I wasn't thin long - I started getting hungry.
*I found this book called "Think yourself thin" - and actually it worked for a while...it was a lot of visualizations, and I couldn't keep it up.
*Another book, "Diets don't work" it actually was good, and I lost weight, but again, a lot of visualization and it didn't last long.
*Atkins diet-I think I am the only one who has GAINED weight on this diet. I gained 20 pounds in 2 months, I had the flu, an ear infection, brocitis, and I couldn't go #2...THIS WAS THE UNHEALTHIEST DIET EVER

I think we are the only ones who gained weight...everyone I tell that to looks at me like I'm crazy and tells me some success story about someone who did well with that diet. I followed it exactly, did the pee-strip tests and all...I just gained weight and got sick. Thanks for letting me know I am not the only one...All the meat, and I did the pork rinds too - I have not had any since. Really gross!!

I've never tried dieting before. I have always been an infomercial junky(I work at night and get home late) so I would always order the next exercise equipment that promised miracle results. I have TaeBo, pilates, treadmills,etc. Which works if you really do them BUT you still have to eat balanced meals. When I did decide enough was enough I went searching for something that made sense......and BFL it is.
I created the bug diet. Imagine everything you eat is a bug. Spaghetti is slimy worms, potato chips are cockraoch wings, pizza is a bunch of flies. The nausea facotr alone will make you lose weight!
The bug diet sounds like the Nichole Richey diet! LOL - Have you seen the photos of her eating out???!! So funny, she looks totally grossed out. It was on some entertainment show last night.

as for the Atkins diet.....the book makes sense....the idea wasn't to remain on all this high fat food forever, but to bring your body back to the basics (um, well...poor choice of words, but can't think of anything else) and then graudally bring it up to the appropriate carbs. Or something like that.
But, whatever. I gained. I hated it. Not gonna do it!
I watched an older couple I know try the "Cabbage Soup Diet". A classic. They ate the soup for about a day and a half, threw the soup away and started eating again. Amazing how when the body is starved what it can do!
some weird swill that was a lot like the hollywood diet. I think it was cranberry juice and vinegar or something like that.

Oh! I nearly forgot! I did a parasite cleanse last year in order to lose weight. It involved taking these antiparasitic capsules with what I lovingly refer to as "poop tea" and mega doses of fiber. I'm not sure if any parasites came out, but if you guys think you spend a long time in the bathroom on BFL, you have another think coming.
I have been on so many different ones, I can't remember them all. I even made up some myself. Nutrisystem, LA Weight Loss, Weight Watchers etc. These programs were so low calorie that I couldn't stick on them for more than a couple months.
The first time I lost a lot of weight was on phen-fen. (70 lbs) Then I got pregnant and gained it all back.
The next time was after my second child. I started with BFL and ended up doing Curves (low carb) because I have worked there for 4 years. (lost 80 lbs that time) I got pregnant AGAIN and gained it all back AGAIN.
So, now I am back to BFL, wanting to lose it once more. My history proves that losing it isn't nearly as difficult for me as keeping it off! then again, I am DONE having children! so maybe I stand a chance this time:)

I'm sure we ALL know one of THESE people: They try every diet under the sun EXCEPT eating healthy and exercising..lol. I had a friend who would work out on a stair stepper for HOURS a day, walk miles every morning. She would NOT give up junk food to save her life (literally). She tried every dang pill and drink and scam, just refused to even consider the healthy eating thing. Isn't that frustrating???? How do you deal with those people? Hey wait, I WAS one of those people...ack!

I have recently finished my bfl and have posted my new picks and have been asked some questions:
Q/Did I follow the bfl programe or did I alter it.
A/I remained completely faithful to the bfl programme except for a couple of things,one was I neglected the lower body workout on Wednesdays to much and I regret this and I will make sure I do the lower body workout in the next challenge and secondly on the day off which was a Sunday in my case I never did eat badly just slighly more of the good stuff i.e.more protein and vedge etc.
Q/What do I actually do for my routine.
A/MONDAY.....UPPER BODY WORKOUT AS BFL
TUESDAY....22 MINUTE RUN ALWAYS BEFORE BREAKFAST
WEDNESDAY..SOMETIMES LOWERBODY WORKOUT AS BFL
THURSDAY...22 MINUTE RUN ALWAYS BEFORE BREAKFAST
FRIDAY.....UPPER BODY WORKOUT AS BFL
SATURDAY...22 MINUTE RUN ALWAYS BEFORE BREAKFAST
SUNDAY.....NO EXERCISE ..EAT EXTRA,UP TO YOU

I dont get bored easy so it was easy for me to stick to meals and also I sell fish so protein was no problem for me but bars and shakes lost more visible fat than food alone because I tended to eat to much protein than needed but either way I still lost the fat and gained muscle,but regrettably not in the legs wich was completely my fault due to lack of training in that departement

I'm going to play the bad guy here & say that I'm skeptical. I have great diffculty believing that someone lost an average of 10lbs a week.
If it were possible, I think there are lots of morbidly obese people out there that would like to know what you did.

I lost the fat through exercise but also lost my muscle through doing to much exercise and no resistance training until I discovered bfl then I Did lose the remaining fat and build muscle hope that clears up my error it was not intentional and is on my profile that I started 2years or so ago..no way can anyone lose that amount of fat in just 12 weeks

I've been PMing with some of the team members on and off, one is still unaccounted for.
I did a trial week last week and this week (my official 2nd, but really my first) is starting to go real well. I am FOCUSING on portion sizes and moving. That is instead of going out at lunch, I bring a can of tuna and an apple and go for a two mile walk.
I have already seen a differance, big time, my pants are definitely getting looser. Soreness isn't bad at all, I'm taking the phosphagen elite and HMB along with a multi-vitamin, glucostamine, chondroitin and the myoplex twice a day.
Let get GET* in here, she'll have some motivational words.
Hows it going with you, starting to get into it? Feeling energetic and doing killer weights and HIIT?

Great job Steve. I am killing it this week. Every session has been very intense and am staying focused. It feels GREAT to be back at it. Not too sore and the eating is going great. Have not missed a meal or workout as of yet. Also am getting in some extra cardio running to the restroom every 30 minutes.:)

Hmmm, how to phrase this- what I need is some insight on how to go from being "on" the program to making it a lifestyle. Im thinking that Bill Phillips doesn't get up everyday thinking it's another day "on" the program....he just DOES- you know what I mean? Feeling like Im "on" a challenge makes it feel like a diet, something temporary....and when I come here and see people on this or that challenge, it feels the same way- has anyone here found a way to bridge the gap between challenge and lifestyle?...I may not be making any sense here, but I'm trying to find a way to make this a no brainer- something I don't even think about- any help would be so appreciated...

The way I see it, eating bad is like being an alcoholic. I lived BFL for almost 2 years. And for some unknown reason, just stopped working out and eating right. Kinda like a recovering alcoholic taking a drink and he lapses back into drinking again. We have eaten bad all our lives(just like a person becomes an alcoholic and drinking for many years) and the only way to keep from backsliding into the bad eating habit is to be aware of what you can and can't do. A recovering alcoholic knows he can't take a drink or he will fall off the wagon. One bad food can't cause me to simply backslide out of good eating habits, but a couple weeks of eating bad and missing workouts puts me off the wagon and it's hard to start back. Each person is different and has different goals. Realize what you can do and still achieve your goals. As far a Bill Phillips goes, oh I'm sure he thinks about it everyday. Especially when he looks at the bank account and knows he is the "lead-dog" in promoting BFL and EAS and needs to look good. I know I would.
I agree with harleyman...one day of bad eating doesn't kill you, but two weeks does. "They" say it takes 21 days to develop a habit...I've found that to be true: when I've done challenges (and I've started about 5 but only finished one)its about at week 3 that the habit clicks. But...its just as easy to fall out of it. So...do a challenge, and do another...and eventually, it becomes habit, at least thats what I hope.
I think its also very important to share what has helped you get lean: visit this board, talk to new people about it...etc.
And about Bill PHillips,LOL!
I have two favorite sayings that help me...
1. "You are free to make choices; you are not free to escape the consequences of those choices."
2. "If you always do what you've always done then you'll always get what you always got!"
If you are like me you have always been a junk food junkie, eating more fast food than good food...and look where it got me! So, in order to get my desired results, I can't do that anymore. It has to be a total lifestyle overhaul, so instead of eating poorly 5-6 days a week(maybe squeezing in one good day), I eat well 6 days a week with one poor day a week.
Not sure if any of this helped but its just a few of the things I think about when I feel like cheating or skipping a workout.

Well... I think...after 12 weeks of doing this it should become a habit. You notice I said "should" become a habit and not "will" become a habit? If you don't set realistic goals and continue to strive to reach them, not only will it not become a habit, but you will also fail. They say set new goals. Reach for new heights. Continue what you were doing and raise the bar a notch. Keep trying to add that extra 5 lbs onto your barbell. Keep increasing your intensity levels to hit that 10. If you continue to live this way day in and day out, it becomes a part of your everyday life.

Thank gawd I'm not the only one who thought this was a hard question. I haven't the slightest clue as to why I've stayed with this as long as I have, why I've screwed up for a week or more, why I still like McDonalds, why I always say when we have BBQ chicken breast, fresh salad & avocados "I think this is the best meal I've had in a long time" (honestly, I say that alot LOL), why, why, why.
I think everyone is different and has their own reasons. One I'm sure of for myself is that when I decided I would do this for 12 weeks it was a good deal of stubborness motivating me and I worked at it as hard as I could. After that to slack off I felt as though I would have "wasted it", it would have all been for nothing, big waste of time - know what I mean jelly bean?
I totally understand what you are saying though. As far as the recovering alcoholic I'd never be able to that. Lets see if I can make some sense - I won't BECOME an alcoholic because I wouldn't want to carry the fact of "I can never ever have another drink as long as I live" in my head SO I DON'T BECOME AN ALCOHOLIC.
Try thinking of it like that, maybe one meal at a time. Its just fuel to feed me for now, I can eat whatever I want when I want I'm just not going to BECOME A FOODAHOLIC.............today. Then do the same tomorrow, and the next day and the next.
Okay, I'm all tongue-tied/finger-tied up here. I know what I'm trying to say just can't do it on a keyboard like I would with talking.
Wow- what great answers...and the good part is, my existing brain cells can make sense out of each one!....maybe its like falling asleep at night- you know you're "trying" to do it, but you rarely recognize when it's actually happened? If you don't continue to strive for something, then what is left to keep you going? If you stop striving for something... you will fall back into all those nasty old habits that got you out of shape and feeling rotten to begin with.
Here is the very harsh reality that I am now faced with because I stopped striving. I had so many excuses to "take it easy for now" I went from taking it easy to stopping all together. Trust me..if you take it easy you will stop striving to make a change. If you stop striving to make a change, you will stop seeing success. If you stop seeing success you will give up on BFL. When you give up doing BFL even if for just a little while, it makes it even harder to get back into it.
Now you have to start all over again. You have to go through all that "first time" muscle soreness and fatigue once again. Your body has to go through that detoxification process again. You need to rebuild your endurance and strength. You need to go back to the gym and face all those people who used to tell you "wow...look at you, you look awesome". You have to take before pictures AGAIN... pictures that show the painful results of your laziness.
Don't do this to yourself. It's SO NOT worth it.

OMG, these are the words that run though my head every day. I am so embarassed and disgusted with myself that I am in a serious self=loathing stage!
I'm lucky that there are 2 YMCA's in my town because honestly I don't want to face the people that I used to work out with. Which in a way is good because I am going FIRST Thing at 5AM so I will definitely my cardio in before anything! And, the OTHER Y has a women's only area although not as elaborate as the other Y, it gets the job done.
Goddessa, I will be following your new progress. You are good for keeping your old pics up, I deleted all mine out of frustration. I will also be posting a new "before" pic soon.

Lisa - you worded very well what quite a few of us feel. It is good to know that we are not alone - there is strength in numbers. My chest hurt so badly the last 2 days I seriously thought I had injured myself. Today it is starting to subside, so I know it was just the results of not working it for 3 weeks. I had forgotten that beginning pain. Never again...I don't want to go through the beginning again. I am having some cravings, but doing a good job resisting them. So far I am doing really well, although due to the soreness I feel a little less motivated for exercise than I was at the beginning of the week...but I will push through. So will you. Just think, in a few weeks we will look and feel so much better about ourselves, get that good old confidence back, fit into those jeans instead of squeeeezing into them. This is a great read for people starting a challenge, in the middle of a challenge and especially at the end of a challenge. Take a few day or a week off if you feel your body needs a break...but don't stay away. You don't want to feel the feeling of having come so far and then ruining part of what you have accomplished - for no good reason. Having said that, I don't believe any of us have completely ruined all of the results of our previous hard work. Yes, we have gained some fat and lost some muscle, but we did not lose the knowledge we gained, and knowledge is power. We can do this!

As I was on the ol' treadmill doing part of my oodles of cardio I was thinking of ideas and all kinds of stuff. It always happens lol. I don't know about you guys but I am an avid car lover, horse lover, runner, are ya seeing the trend? I got to thinking. You know this is my body! This is my machine! I intend to drive it at full performance at all times. Even through the mountains with it's dangerous curves. On the straights pushing it to the limit, but knowing when to slow down. I love this machine I own and most of all I know it's all up to me am I driving a beat up uncared for Jalopy? Or am I driving a high performance vehicle? I want to drive this machine at the highest performance I can. How do you want to drive your machine?

Have what I am having for dinner...take a whole wheat pita brush on a little olive oil, sprinkle a little garlic salt and place it in the oven at 350 for about 8 minutes, get it nice and toasty...top it with shredded chicken mixed with a little BBQ sauce and sprink on a little lowfat mozzerella or monterey jack cheese! These are SOOOOO Good! Have a little side bowl of veggies too if you haven't had any yet today!

First off...Mac n Cheese?? Uh. NO. Plain and simple. When you're done gobbling it down, I promise you will feel like absolute shit. You need to tell yourself that IT'S ONLY FOOD. It holds no candle to how incredibly awesome you will feel in the next couple weeks. When you wake in the morning, your first thought will be that stupid mac and cheese.
In case I'm too late...SO WHAT. MOVE ON. FORGIVE YOURSELF.
You have to remember why you've chosen to begin this program to begin with.
I can't even begin to tell you how many times I'm kickin' it on the whole cardio thing and I have to tell myself, "Keep on going...one day I'm going to wake up and BAM...I'll see that change". It's going to work. If you are doing this program properly...IT'S GOING TO WORK! It's a life time...a couple more weeks will only help you. If you quit now, I guarantee you will see no progress.
Treat yourself to the EFL book but be careful. I was told the recipes in the book are used mostly for maintenance. But it breaks the monotony.

Have you written your goal? Have your picture to look at as motivation? Do some visualizing of yourself in your bikini on the beach. You are NOT that far from being there honey!!!

Wrecky, Step Away From the Mac! Hold on! You will get past this. I'm fighting off the urge to eat cake with the work gang (again, they eat a lot around here). I have my water and my myoplex lite bar ready to eat. Plan something fun but within the BFL guidelines for dinner instead! It'll be worth the effort. You will feel so proud of yourself for taking the path of BFL. It is hard to keep going, and keep going strong. It is hard to not want the "old way of life stuff". It isn't easy. That's why this is a challenge. Ask yourself what you really want more. Nothing will taste better than sliding with ease into your "skinny" jeans. Wait for it, it'll come. Keep going.

I am feeling the same way you are.I am in the 7th week, burned out and guess what...I had mac n cheese for dinner. You and I were thinking the same thing...freaky ;)
Anyway, I do feel guilty and like crap for eating the Mac n cheese.
I only wish I saw this posting before I ate. Sometimes I feel like the only one on earth who struggles with the burnout. It is nice to know I am not alone here.
I will end this burnout today and get back on the wagon tomorrow.
Thanks everyone for your support. Next time I want to cheat, I will make sure to check the tracker and ask for help.

I'm glad you didn't have the mac n cheese (I can't stand the stuff myself!) And you will be glad you didn't either.
But just remember, it's not 12 weeks or 72 meals. It's just one meal, one workout. And if one of those meals isn't quite right, forget it and move past it. Eat right the next time.

I have had three perfect BFL days. I can't wait to weigh in on Saturday. I know that there will be some progress.
Water is on track. Food is great. I'm going to have to switch my UBWO to tomorrow and instead do a quick HIIT cardio session after work.

Doing good here. Started to school on Tuesday. Told my family I would see them in December at graduation haha! It is going to be tough but I can do this and balance my family and myself too. Okay so I only got 5 meals in today. I was off today so i slept in.....first week is tough lol i did do my lbwo though this evening! it rocked! anyhow, in order to get my full 6 meals in, i will have to stay up really really late! how bad is this, and also, will it take away from my mini challenge points for eating for the day? Tell me about it!! I just posted pics from my first challenge and man was I FAT!! I like seeing them cause it is a reminder of what I NEVER want to look like again. You don't have that far to go!! In the beginning, when I couldn't stand the pain, like at night when trying to sleep, I took some aspirin.
After a while, it gets better. Now I almost enjoy it - kind of like a badge of honor!

Day 3 lbwo kicked my ass....(i hope thats ok to say).. I just realized somthing...you need your legs on a daily basis more than your arms. I will not give in to the pain. I am going to work through it. Please tell me it will get better. Anyone Please.

Hi - new girl here. Day 3 and I am already amazed at the changes in my energy level. When the alarm goes off just before 6 I get right up and get on the treadmill! I had some questions about the cardio portion but think I have enough info now that I can do it correctly (hitting the various levels of intensity). Days 1 and 2 I was going by my heart rate monitor and it was an even effort. I will continue to do this moderate cardio on days when I do weights but on cardio only days I will work on hitting the intensity levels!
I have a question - granted I have 40+ pounds to lose but this morning I stepped on the scale and was down a bit over 2 pounds already! I am weighing myself at the same time every other day, I did it 3 times this morning and the reading was the same. It is a brand new scale so I trust it. But is 2+ pounds in 2 days crazy? Not that I'm complaining . . .

A lot of people lose weight fast in the beginnnig because its mostly water. It would be almost impossible for you to lose that much fat/muscle in 3 days because that equates to around a 7200 calorie deficit.

Don't weigh more than once a week. Your weight fluctuates every day and every hour. When you first start a new program, you lose a lot of water very quickly, and that will show on the scale. But the scale is not the best measurement of progress, and sometimes won't show a loss even if you've burned off fat, because you may have added some muscle. Once a week, that's it. :)

Just a couple of suggestions-Stay off of the scale (or if youre totally addicted listen to JDub and dont weigh more than once a week. Im tellin you-the scale is DETERMINED to mess with you!! ITS EVIL!! hehehe Seriously though.
Have you done BFL before? Im just curious.. why you are doing extra cardio. If you are TRULY hitting your high points and doing HIIT AS WRITTEN, theres no need for the extra.

Dana, this is my first BFL. I'm doing the extra cardio mainly because I like getting my blood moving in the morning and so am willing to do it on my non-cardio days. As I said I am planning to keep all but the cardio days moderate (2.4 MPH). Also I want to make sure it is habit and the only way that is going to happen fast is by doing something at 6 am every day! And, I'll admit, I have not yet read BFL, only BFL for Women (blech) and extra cardio is okayed there although I suspect it is because the book is written from the POV that women are not going to be able to do HIIT (can you tell I am offended by the way this book is written?)

It's hard to get out of the cardio-every-day mindset, but I STRONGLY suggest reading the original BFL book. If you want to do something at 6 am every day, you can definitely do that with the BFL plan as you are supposed to alternate your weight workouts with cardio and he suggests doing your workouts first thing in the am if possible. You can always do a quickie treadmill warmup before your weight workouts. No point in doing more than you need to....I have spent years over-doing it and wondering why I am (1) exhausted and (2) not seeing results. Reading the book has helped me see why....

I am new to the Body for life program. I started on 1/2/06 and so far am going exactly on track. Is catfish on the diet? I was thinking about making it tongiht but it wasn't on the list of authorized foods. Usually white fish is good for you.

I have been on my challenge for 1 week and 2 days... I have already felt like I seen some minor changes at the end of my first week.... I was so excited... now a few days later, I look in the mirror and I feel like I look exactly as I did when I started... it goes back and forth... I have followed the program 100% perfectly every day with not even one full cheat day yet... please tell me... is this normal... I know many have said changes typically don't start really happening visually for 3-4 weeks.... I can feel my muscles growing larger... please tell me this is NORMAL?!?!? : )
