Cheri hang in there and don't let your hubby's loss of enthusiasm curb yours in any way! Just wanted to mention...
I tried ff feta this time round on EFL for the first time- just thought Id mention it because it adds so much flavor and you hardly have to use any at all on whatever you want to put it on...hardly any calories at all.
Also, I have a spaghetti squash I bought-Ive made it before but not EFL Style- anyone have any suggestions?? Ill serve meat with it so any ideas dont necessarily need to include protein.

Linne - I've always eaten spaghetti squash with meat sauce for regular spaghetti. For the sauce I use lean ground turkey, canned either diced tomatoes or puree mixed with a bit of spaghetti sauce, season with oregano, parsley & basil, use a tsp or so of splenda or baking soda to get rid of any "tin" taste or "acidity". Top with a bit of parmesan and dry chili peppers.

I wasn't gonna do it, but I just couldn't help myself.
Went to the gym for cardio after work yesterday
and stepped up on the scale. I was affraid of what it would tell me.
I stepped on, closed my eyes and then looked down
I'm right back where I was (scale weight wise) at the end of challenge 1. Only took me 3 days to get that ugly 3 lbs. off.
Now, I can hardly wait to go to the gym on Saturday morning and take measurements for the REAL final result of week 1.

I deleted my profile amidst all the drama a few weeks ago. I have the photos saved somewhere at home, but haven't gotten around to reposting them. I lost my camera a few weeks ago too so I don't have any pictures since week 10 of challenge 1. Hopefully there will be a big change when I can finally take a picture again!

I was thinking the fruit trays (just your basic pre-cut fruit) in the groceries as a snack. My old snack of choice was popcorn, but I would have no problem eating fruit. Is that ok? How much would I'd be allowed?

Portions would depend on your goals and ht/wt... but remember to add some cheese or nuts to the fruits to balance out the snack :-)

Betagen is an EAS only product. CLA is produced by a variety of companies. I'd look at Twinlabs, GNC or Weider. All three are good companies.

I took Cortislim but didn't notice anything (no extra energy, etc.) I took and liked Relacore and noticed energy increase and calmness. My trainer looked at the bottle and told me he approved. He also said that not everyone has the same reaction to all products...what works for some may not be great for others.
I did BFL two years ago with great results and am back on the BFL track again taking CLA, Betagen and Thermo DyanmX. I'm sticking with the EAS products this time.

They are moving???? Where to? And man were you lucky to have access to that sale monthly! Geez! So, finace and I are both doing this and really we spend alot of money!! Probably around $250 (thats a lot to us)...we buy Betagen/Cytovol/L-Gluatamine/Protein and a non-Eas product, a little chocolate tonix mix that is packed with vitamins that we have in the morning before working out with 8 oz. of coffee and a scoop of protein.

About the interview. It went REALLY well. They basically said I could set my hours and that I work off of comission so I could earn anywhere from $10-$50/hr. That would be GREAT! They do pay a base hourly rate so I still get paid something if a client is a no show or cancels. I was not "formally" hired but they are not interviewing anyone else as they are waiting on me to take my CPT exam.
Now bear with me, I wasn't really excited after the interview. Not exactly sure why though. Not sure if the uneasy feelings were from the fact that I am sad about going to work and leaving my precious family or if I am not supposed to be doing it at all. Need to pray about it more. I am really heartbroken about not being here to eat dinner everynight with my family or being able to tuck the kiddos in. They are young and grow SOOO fast. Granted I am here with them all day so I will get to spend time with them I am just unsure right now. And I kind of like spending time with my wonderful husband too I am very excited about what I would be doing............it would be nice to educate people about how to take care of their own bodies and help them achieve their goals!!

Here's a little secret that you won't read about at Monster.com. Dismiss traditional interview etiquette and consider this: What is the dress code for the position I am seeking? Since it's a fitness center and they're wearing polo shirts and nice clean warmups, dress like you already work there. You should be mistaken for an employee by the clubs' patrons. Just far enough outside the box to make you really stand out in a very positive way.

Shelly, I completely understand (as most mothers can) how you don't want to leave your family. This job will mainly be evening hours when most people are home so that will be a change. However, it will allow you to set your own schedule depending on how much $$ you want/need to make.
There are lots of things to think about but I'm sure you'll make the right decision. Congrats on the great interview and good luck with that certification!

We have 2 tanks, a 110 fresh and a 200 gallon coral reef. The fresh has neons and other types of small schooling fish. The salt has different types of corals,fish, crabs, and mushrooms. We have a Nemo and a Dory of course. We also have a coral called a Kenya tree that has been reproducing. About every two months we pull the little trees out, put them in a baggy and sale them to the fish store for $40.oo. Not bad when your hobby can make you a little money back!

Bev...as a singer you recognize little mistakes that a regular ear wouldn't even notice. Believe me, with the instruments playing, I didn't hear any mistakes, and I am vocally trained as well! I know how you feel though, as I've always gotten ticked at myself when I know I slip up because I always want it to be perfect. You did an awesome job and don't beat yourself up over something that the viewers didn't even know about! k?

Hmmmm...well, I don't know all of these songs, but please keep in mind that he may like them because of a specific beat or rhythm within the song.
There is always the huge debate about lyrics and what they mean and/or what they teach kids these days.
Does the service you use offer a blocker or filter that you can set? I use iTunes and it does have a parental block.

I don't think his choice of music is a problem because everything you listed is popular among kids his age. I have a 12 y/o son and a 15 y/o son and that is the type of music they like to listen to. With that said, I don't allow them to listen to some of it.
I would suggest finding a way to restrict what he is allowed to download. Eminem has some adult lyrics therefore I wouldn't let either of my sons buy his music unless it was purchased from walmart. Walmart only sells the radio version of Eminem so the kids can listen to the music but not get all of his foul language.

Personally I like Eminem, he has amazing talent...BUT he does use a lot of foul language so I would use edited version for a 12/13 year old....Green Day and Blink 182 are great for his age.I don't know anything about Slipknots music...good luck.

I know very little about the music you listed but I get the jist of what you're saying. You're in a tough situation to be sure.
One thing that I constantly have to remind myself of is the fact that there has NEVER been a generation that has not criticized the younger generation's music - NEVER!!!! You or others might say "well this is a bit different". Those other generations said the same thing too.
I know some of those lyrics are horrible. For some strange reason I've taken on a new appreciation of Eminem; I think he's actually very talented and quite brilliant. But and this is a big but, I really don't pay much attention to his obsenities too much but that would be because of my age.
Jeffbsgt has a good suggestion about the radio music but something tells me they'll say its not cool.

I need to know more about this stuff as well. My 13, almost 14-year old daughter likes all kinds of music that I have never heard of. One of her favorite bands is "My Chemical Romance" and she asked for a CD titled "You give me your bullets, I'll give you my love" or something like that. I know my mother hated all of the music I liked as a kid, none of which "hurt" me, but I do still want to be careful about what she listens to. I have noticed that a lot of the bands teens like have morbid-sounding names and even worse sounding song titles.... I feel old because I don't get the appeal!

I bought my 10 year old niece a mp3 player for Xmas. I was helping her download music, I had to hear it first. There was one song where the girls was swearing up a storm. I told my niece she couldn't have that song and she proceeded to say and I qoute

it is a tenuous balance thats for sure. can't say I am the best at it. for the most part though my son (12) listens pretty well and doesn't experiment too much. guess for that much I am blessed beyond the actual gift of his arrival.
as a rule, and I think it has been followed for the most part is, explicit lyrics are out.
when I find one then it is removed from the player and computer. continued ignorance though results in loss of d/l privileges.
honestly my kid has it rough compared to his friends because I am more computer literate than most of his friends parents. and I can find most of the hiding places, also get more restrictive on what he can do on the computer beyond norton's capabilities

Honestly, I don't think kids learn anything from music they haven't already picked up from friends. You can watch what your kids watch on TV and listen to, but not their friends and they WILL pick it up. If you are doing your part, the music won't affect your child at all.
However, my son is only 4, so time may change my theory ;)

LMAO, you have GOT to be kidding me. The music he listens to has nothing to do with how he is as a person and everything to do on how you bring him up.
I used to listen to 2 live crew, Too Short, and NWA growing up around that age. I now have a BS in Computer Information Systems. Did this music turn me into a bad person...I think not.
Slipnot is a heavy metal group. Its loud and fast. Good for working out in my opinion.

I second Tom and Chuckdiesel. I listened to hard core rap when I was young too, and I turned out ok.
And as Tom said, these kids are already learning this stuff from their friends. And think about the influence from TV, magazines, news, and pretty much anywhere else you look. Have you watched MTV lately?
I don't think sheltering children from things we view as 'harmful' helps them at all. I think it has an opposite effect.
My 13 year old sister still can't watch the latest Harry Potter movie until my parents see them first. That girl is going to be in for one HELL of a shock when she actually gets to make her own decisions in life. I will bet big money that she will be a total hellian when she grows up because my parents are doing too much sheltering and not enough teaching good morales and ethics.
I really don't think music has 'messed' up any kids lives. And I fully believe that it's up to the parents to ultimately raise their kids up right.
There are some kids at my Church that listen to heavy metal and even dress in goth. I'm very lucky that my Church congregation is accepting and open minded about their personal choice in music and style. But if you saw these kids on the street, you would never know that they are good christian kids.

Growing up I listened to the worst of the worst.. .punk rock... hardcore... etc.. It 's content did not have much of an influence in the long run...

and NOLA The my chemical romance cd is very popular among kids that age. I'm not too familiar with the lyrics, but my band toured with them awhile ago and they were great guys. Basically comic book nerds. :)

You are All correct, I'll continue keeping an eye out and make sure his head is screwed on straight. He seems to be growing up fast and with some of the things that you hear today (latest was the late James Dungy, son of Colts head coach), I want to make sure I'm the best dad I can be for my children. Not that Tony was not a great father or person nor do I wish to insinuate that, I am looking at myself and my children only in regards to societal influences.
Limits, but not overbearing or controlling, that is what I will continue to do. Thanks all for your valuable input!

I'm happy to hear that this thread began going in the right direction with the last few posts. All the music you listed is very popular and I like most of it myself. Yes, some of the lyric use explcit language, but you can't shelter kids from everything. They'll just hear it at the friends' houses. Wouldn't you rather be supportive of their music so you can answer/address any concerns you or they may have about the music. Listen to the songs with your kids and talk about them if you have to. If you try to shelter your children from everything that the world will throw at them some day they will become dysfunctional. I have several friend that had overprotective parents and I hate the way they've become since the were "unleashed". Parents really need to facilitate their children's development hot hinder it. But what do I know, I don't have kids...

When I was 13 I purchased "Use Your Illusion 1" by Guns n Roses because I liked the song November Rain.... turns out theres a lot of loud, fast stuff on there that's great to run to and I use it for workouts to this day. But at the time my mom found the lyric sheet and confiscated my CD....and called the school counselor!
Now there are some bad words on that CD but I don't think they were at all indicative of who I was as a person nor did they influence me at all.
Sometimes kids just like what they are exposed to.... and your list is all popular, mainstream music today. I like most of that stuff myself. I use a lot of it, Radio version, in the dance classes I teach.
You can't really find music appropriate for kids on the radio today... but I don;t really think the kids listen to the words and act accordingly.

Just a thought: listen to the music and decide for your self what you think. Don't listen to the music so much as the lyrics because you may not like that kind of music. If you disagree with the lyrics because you believe they are saying/teaching/exposing your child to things you disgree with, there is your answer to your question about him listening to the music.

Great post, SupaFreak! I totally agree with you! My 14 year old son listens to ALL types of music...and I'm' talking everything from Eminem to Christian rock to Broadway show tunes. I figure if I haven't taught him and his 13 year old sister the morals I want them to have, they aren't going to learn them now and music won't matter one way or the other. That said, I don't encourage him buying the stuff that has lots of cuss words and negative meaning. But he's a great kid, straight A student, football player and black belt in Taekwondo. I figure Eminem's not going to change all that!! (And I agree, he is a very talented artist...have you heard his newest song about his daughter?!!? Makes me cry every time...and this guy is a RAPPER!!)

Stepor--I live in Indy and have been watching the story about Tony Dungy's son. Remember though, his son ODed on pills back in October, so his suicide wasn't out of the blue.
I don't mean that against Tony Dungy either. I'm just pointing out that there were signs before he killed himself.

I agree with Danielle,as well as, the others. You show that you are a concerned and loving parent just by raising the question about the lyrics. We all listened to stuff growing up that was "on the edge" at the time. I have a nine year old son and a 4 year old daughter and I make it a point to talk with them every day. Even if only for 2 minutes. My wife and I want to know what is going on in their lives and what they are learning. I know what I was doing when I was nine and how my language was at school. I also know that if my parents heard me using foul language or not respecting adults, that my butt was getting worn out with a belt. In my opinion, stay in-touch with what is going on in the kids' life and teach them that the choices they make have consequences, good and bad.
I listened to tons of metal growing up(AC/DC, Dokken, WASP, Kiss, ect.)and didn't turn out to bad. Played college baseball, 2 years pro baseball, and have a BS in Psychology.
We as parents have to be involved in our kids' lives.

You know my mom hated my music when I was growing up 2 live Crew oh yea Eazy E, oh gawd and Too Short. It was more of a laughing factor to me. I did not turn out bad and I respect my mom for not trying to enforce strict music laws on me. She hated the music sooo much though lol. But she also knew I loved the beats of them I listened to everything under the sun from rap to heavy metal to classical. I loved music & most of all I loved the lyrics sometimes. Some made me laugh some made me think some just made me dance. But most of all it was a just part of growing up. I think talking to your kids about the lyrics maybe getting there opinion on what they think it means, then maybe explaining what they mean and that they are just a form of expression not action. Or maybe just watching his actions. Like is he trying to be the music or is he just listening to the music. I would not stress to much about it.

Eminem- I've banned his music from our presentation...I wont offend people by posting but if you look up the lyrics to cum on everybody you will get a real idea where he goes with his music- and its not good. I agree that he's talented -but I think he's totally wasting it.
Green Day- Old speed metal- some cussing but generally just teen angst stuff- they've actually got a couple songs on our end of year video
The rest of them are a cross of rock and pop and nothing to worry about

I understand your concerns. I have a son that will be 13 in April and his taste in music is much different than mine. But that's just it. It's HIS taste. He loves Eminem and Nelly....but I only buy the censored versions for him that eliminates the cussing. That eases my mind a bit. I'm sure he still hears it elsewhere, and he sees movies with cussing and all but with the music, I don't mind his taste as long as it's cleaner. I do not allow any downloading of music though so I don't know if they have the censored versions that you can download.
The important thing is....realize that this doesn't determine WHO he is. Take a walk down memory lane and revisit the groups that you used to be into as a teenager. Then think...did it turn you into something different? Music is something different to everyone. Some..just pure entertainment..some...an outlet, so to speak...and everyone interprets it differently. When you hear a song that's questionable to you, just ask him.."what do you like about this song?" You may be surprised. He may tell you things that he can relate to in the message, or he may just say he likes the beat. Music does not shape/form who we are...nor does what we listen to always define our character.
Like I said...as a parent, I understand, but I think it's harmless at this point. If he had a sudden change in character and he's listening to different things (different as in what he'd normally be interested in) and hanging around a new group of friends, then yes, you should be concerned. At this point...he's your typical pre-teen.

Remember back to our childhoods.. blaring the 8 track and the cassette player or even the 45's. to songs and screaming our lungs out to the words.. having no idea what the hell they meant.. "relax don;t do it when you wanna get to it.. relax dont do it...when you wanna c,,,," you all know the song well little did we know what it meant. until later.. than how appalled we were, like OMG!!!! Listen to the lyrics they are all basically saying the same commercialistic thing to piss off your parents as our music did..just more blatant about it.. It is teenage rebellion.. as we all did. watching for ealry warnings of problems is key...But it is benign and harmless as it was in our day... As we secretly listened to it at friends homes or hid it from the 'rents then they will also. I swear to god though if my kid listens to country I am going factory on them!!!!

You know, I would agree with dream catcher except for the fact that at least at the school I work at, there are times when we have noon dances ( last an hour) on the days we have those, we only play the "clean version of music ( which means they pronounce every syllable except the U in F*ck)which they fuzz out...on those days, we have more fights, more referrals for disrespect and more problems than on any other day. It's an influence...and unfortunately, a bad influence can lead to a split second bad decision that can affect the rest of their life....
wanted to add this- think of the most liberal teacher in your school...it probably wasnt the math or english or history or even PE teacher was it...it was me. The art teacher...even with my tattoos and piercings and liberal views on just about everything I still think this stuff influences kids beyond the parents scope of seeing it....

I think for bodybuilding purposes the hair would be like.....well just HAIR covering muscle.
But all that stubble friction rubbed across my body no thanks. Once I rubbed my hand across a guys' forearm that had been shaved and it grossed me out; almost worse than a girl walking around in a camisole and black hairy armpits - not sure which is worse.
If the guy has hair so be it. Also I think its kind of a fad right now like tatoos and also there is something pubescent looking about a completely hairless man. For contest purposes, hair is just plain counterproductive. It fuzzes out (no pun intended) all the muscle definition, tendon insertions, veins, and everything else that is important to the judges. It also inhibits tanning. Not shaving means not winning. It does all grow back out, so really there's no big deal about shaving it off. Using an electric trimmer to cut it down far enough so that it can then be shaved off with a good razor and a non foaming cream such as Kiss My Face or similar, is the best way to do it. And as for the lady who was grossed out by the prickly hair on a shaven forearm, that might give you some idea of the queezy feeling a guy gets when lady fair forgets to shave her legs for a few days.

Wouldn't it actually be a lot more work for you to go back and forth between your two challenges, keeping track of both sets of photos, instead of just putting them into one? If you do, then you might have seen the series "30 Days" by the maker of Supersize Me. Everyone's heard of that one right?
Anyway, the pretext of the show is, you spend 30 days in another person's shoes.
The first show was the guy and his fiance, spending 30 days living in another city on minimum wage. BIG eye opener I tell you.
The other day though, one was on with a guy that wanted to lose weight and get back to his high school days. So he went to an anti-aging doctor. Personally he should have had the title "quack".
He put the guy on human growth hormone, and testosterone, and get this 41 supplement pills a day. He also said this would have no negative effects on the mans body.
The one thing he and his wife were worried about was sterility. So they had some sperm frozen. he had a GREAT sperm count. Within 2 weeks on this regime - NO live sperm. NOT ONE. All dead. No little swimmers.
He also started getting liver problems. Needless to say, they went off the entire program immediately and just stuck to the personal training, exercise and healthy eating he had started also.
What was funny was at the beginning of the show I said to Matt - WTF, he can get that without all that shit. And needless to say, and the end they came to the same conclusions.
Another thing I noticed about the show was the extremely bad attitude from his overweight wife. Not about dieting and eating healthy, but she was a bitch and extremely rude to his personal trainer SIMPLY because it was a very fit and attractive young woman.
If you ever see it on and manage to catch a repeat - you should watch it!

1/2 c. low-fat cottage cheese blended with two egg whites and some cinnamon and/or Splenda to taste.
Then blend in 1/2 c. dry oats. Then use just like pancake batter in a pan sprayed with Pam.
You could also add about 1/8 c. of sugar-free Log Cabin on top once you nuke it at work.
Once you make the batter in batches do you freeze it and then defrost it and then cook it? Or do you store just in the refrig until you want to use it?

Pixy did a good job. Its one of the oldest grains known to man and is considered superior to other grains.
Look at a bulk food store or a health food store. Its more expensive than rice; I just bought a bag the size of a say $4 bag of rice - 20 bucks!!!!!
Cook it as you would rice, ie. 1 cup quinoa, 2 cups water, boil then cover, cook on low about 15 mins - like rice. Think of couscous cooked but this develops a translucent "halo" around it. It has a nutty flavour and I would eat it with anything you'd serve rice with. Steve loves it and his younger brother that survives on Fruit Loops and Pizza Pops (if you call that a picky eater) actually likes it too. I find it messy to eat with a fork - try a spoon. I eat brown rice occasionally and boy do I miss the quinoa when I do - this is definately worth a try, let me know what you think.

Really, some of you guys have never had these? To me they are the epitomy of junk food and quite frankly I don't think it would make any difference whether you microwaved them in the wrapper or not. Steve was with me at the grocery store (a very rare event) and he put them in the cart; my eyes just about bugged out of my head when I saw them along with the frozen burritos. I tossed them out of the cart at him like a hot potatoe and made him carry them. What if someone were to see me with them in the cart?

I was searching for some instant oatmeal that I could keep at work....just in case.
This is what I found:
Sturms, Healthy for your Heart Whole Grain Oatmeal. No sugar added.
per packet:
120 cals
2.5 fat
21 g carb
6 fiber (whoo-hoo!)
1 sugar
4 protein
I added to packets of splenda with hot water. Very YUMMY. And I can't eat plain oatmeal. Makes me gag. This was wonderful.
Added a string cheese and this was meal #1 for me!
What do you all think of the oatmeal?

I know this has been touched on before by checking out old threads, but I need some more info.
I love sushi. I consider sushi rolls to be "beginner" sushi. Some of the rolls are good, but I love the raw fish much more.
When I first started BFL, I assumed sushi would be an approved meal, since it is raw fish and fish has a good amount of protein. But add the rice and it could become this sneaky bad meal. So what do I do? Is there a such thing as sushi made with brown rice? How could I create a balanced sushi meal? Let's say I get 4 pieces of salmon and 2 pieces of tuna, combine it with a little steamed rice and a seaweed salad.. it sounds balanced, but how much rice is too much?

hey there... bad thing about sushi rice is that it's made with sugar, so it's generally best to avoid it.
I order sashimi so it's just the protein... then order plain, steamed brown rice on the side as my carb (like you suggested). Usually about 1/2 cup of rice is a portion.

I eat the sashimi which does not come on rice. The rolls/ with the rice does have WHITE rice at my favorite place. But I think if you count the amount of rice you are eating and keep it under 1/2 cup it will be ok. I know white rice is not ideal, but it isn't such a huge departure. I've been limiting how much I eat sushi because of the soy sauce. I love lots of wasabi and soy sauce. I think if you can limit the rice and avoid the nigori (I LOVE NIGORI) with my sushi, then you are ok. I go for it on free day, white rice, Nigori and all.

Suuuuussshhhiiii Sushi rice is just more sticky no sugar added. You might be thinking because it is sushi made with white rice which yadda yadda yadda we all know white rice glycemic index and yadda yadda I could go on but I won't.
Now here is the skinny on the white rice verses brown rice. White rice has less nutrients than brown rice. So White Rice is not bad. Sushi away! Of course you know what you can't have things like the rolls with cream cheese and those sauce mixes. Some sushi places even make sushi with brown rice these days. About 1/3 to 1/2 cup of rice would be good. Of course your gonna have to eyeball it this is where the fist method comes in handy. Of course sometimes I imagine my fist is the size of the hulks LOL.

I think it is fair to say that fudge is the economic engine of the tourism industry in upper Michigan. Mackinac Island, without fudge, would be just the sweet smell of horse manure. The odor of the tourist fudge cooking combined with the horse manure smell (no cars allowed on the island you know) is classic Mackinac island. Has anyone tried this yet? It is flavored, low-calorie rum that comes in key lime, wild berry, and coconut. It is not supposed to be a wine cooler, like Bacardi Breezers, but a low-calorie, low-carb rum. I was wondering if anyone had tried it and could tell me if it was any good. If it is, it could make my cheat day less "cheaty." A shot has 1/2 the calories of a regular shot of Bacardi, which would bring my rum and diet coke from 96 calories to 48 calories!!

I used to be a distance runner. When I was in the Navy, I developed some wicked bad shin splints. Now I can't run more than a day or two without feeling intense pain. Just thinking about how I can't really run anymore brings tears to my eyes. I really miss it.
It was one of the few things growing up that my Dad said I was good at.

Shin splints is a term used for shin pain. It is usually caused tendinitis. The tendons that attach to your shin get in flamed and they keep getting worse if you do not know why.
Most common way to get them
1.Run to much to quickly mileage should only in crease 10% a week
2.Foot rotation(pronation) when your foot strike hits the ground it my roll in or out
3.Arch problems-no arch causes no support
-to high an arch is also a problem
All these things stress your tendon that attach to your shin. Tendons have low blood supply, therefor take a long time to heal. Always ice after a run and take an anti inflammatory.
If you go to a specialized running store they will watch you walk or run and fit you for what you need. I highly recommend this, I did it and thought my problem was my arch, but turns out it dropped enough and I needed stability shoes not arch support.

Hey!
I know that here you can go to one of the stores that have professional runners (usually can find these on running club sites) and they can get you on the treadmill and watch you run.
They can determine if you are over pronating or something like that. Then they can show you what shoes will help you.
I've always gotten shin splints when I start running again. So...I just stay on the bike until I drop a few pounds and then they don't bother me so much.

I have them periodically myself, along with heel spurs. I've got to get to a running store to be fit.
What I do for both my shin splints and heel spurs is ice and stretch, 3 or 4 times per day, both. Frankly it isn't fun doing that and hard due to the time but it works in the short term for me. If I keep up with it, I never get them, then once I stop the calf stretches for more than a week, WHAM, I'm in tears.
I believe the ice reduces the inflamation in the tendons on the bottom of my foot and front of my shin and the stretches start to lengthen them so pain gets reduced.

I have a problem with shin splints too, the reason I get them in that my exterior tibialus (SP?) muscle (the muscle on the outside part of my shin in the front) is over developed...so when I run it pulls on the bone causing shin splints.
My boyfriend, excuse me, finace, is a personal trainer and he has helped me understand what is going on...so knowing what the problem is - is the first step to "fixing" it....it will be a LONG process for me. What I had to do initially was ice after every time I ran...10 minutes each leg. After icing he would massage them for me HURT LIKE CRAZY but I let him.
I have to foam roll prior to doing cardio, as often as I thought about it stretch my calves. As crazy as it sounds too, I have to do toe tapping exercises, just because that muscle is over developed does not mean it is strong, it is actually very weak, so I just sit and tap as quickly as I can for about 30 sec to a minute....each tap pulling my toes up as high as possible really activating that muscle. It sounds easy but it hurts like hell towards the end of the minute.
I am also having to really focus on building CALF muscles (back of my shin) to offset the overdevelopment of the front.
I am finally to the point where I can jump rope and run periodically, but NOT every cardio session or they will act up again...

You should always make a point to get fitted at a running specialty store if you have a major running related goal.
I am prone to shin splints, but corrected the problem with proper fitting shoes, stretching, and an orthodic in my right shoe.
It is correctable, just see the experts. :)

I said everday---I'm actually only doing the ab workout Mon-Fri and resting them over the weekends.
I figure either I'll see a big difference and I'll continue or I won't see a difference and I'll go back to everyother day. Time alone will tell.

I really enjoyed this week's show. I sure wish they would tell us more about the nutrition part of it all though. I thought Caroline Rhea looked thinner at the finale - like she had done some work in the 5 months. I really don't know how she could carry on WITHOUT wanting to take on these lifestyle changes herself. I thought Gillian was a bit over the top when training the guys last season. I think she was a bit too huggy and rubbed up against the guys a bit too much. She was always touching them and in their face being the lovey angel.

I'm right there with you kiddo! Looks like I 'found' about 20 lbs since the end of September. Some of that was due to complacency and some because of illness. Whatever the reason, the result is the same... The good news is that I think I figured out medically what was causing me to feel so sick and exhausted the last couple of months and now I'm feeling great!

I like turkey jerky better myself. The sugar or salt is so bad but one time I was traveling and ran out of protein bars and missed lunch so I bought some jerky- wouldnt recommend it on a regular basis though because of the darn sodium!

If you make your own jerky you can buy low sodium cures. I make my own out of venison. It makes a great snack but don’t eat a whole bunch of it on any one day. Use jerky is a snack vice a meal.

Wow! Thanks for the warm welcome! I didn't tell this in my profile, but I am a certified sports nutritionist and I have worked for a fitness/weight loss facility for 4 years. I have done weight loss counseling and taught classes on nutrition. My biggest thing is I don't practice what I preach, but I do have a lot of knowledge that hopefully will be beneficial to our team.

I wasn't trying to infer that anyone on this team is lacking in knowledge. I just meant that if there is, I would be willing to help.
Sometimes our old ways of thinking about nutrition and exercise are hard to let go of. For example, many of the people I have worked with are convinced, until you explain it in depth, that low calorie eating is the best way. (because that has been taught for so many years) I have talked to people that start a program and believe they know better how to do it and don't want to follow the plan how it is laid out. I have also met people online that start BFL without actually having read the book. So, our team probably isn't like this. But, if anyone needs help I am there. I just wanted to make sure no one took offense to my last post.

I have never been a good planner, I do set goals, but maybe they are too long term. I give myself too much freedom that I end up messing up and quitting.

Like I said in another thread don't get me wrong it is great to see others succeed but I have to compare myself with myself and me with my milestones. Your gonna do great and there is nothing odd about that motivation. ;-)
Amkazen: You are so right about the support thing I became so addicted to the tracker because these were my only healthy friends who liked to work out. I could not find any around here lol. Finally I am making friends in my area that are fitness driven with the same fitness goal or just healthy fit people. I don't think I could have survived without the support from here and everyone here.

I also use mybodycomp.com. In my last challenge, I had a BF fat test done at the gym and then I also entered all my measurements on mybodycomp.com that night.

I take part of the milk and freeze it in ice cube trays first. Then I blend that and the remaining milk with the powder, then crush it up with the bananas. Stays a little firmer that way.

I use Breyers heart healthy (low fat, lower carb) Ice creme and skim milk
I only have this every once in a while
1/2 c ice creme= 90 cal.
1/2 c skim milk=80 cal.
comes out to be like 6 gr. fat, 20 gr. carbs, 10-12 gr. protein

I have made it and it turns out great. You do have to use larger bananas and I don't let them thaw AT ALL before putting them in the blender. I isn't quite as thick as ice cream but definately NOT a shake. I love this stuff but save it for free day!!
I also like ashtrash's idea of freezing ahead of time. Now that's a sure fire way to make it hard ;)

I am doing SUPER!! Since this is my 6th week of the challenge, I was already mentally prepared to get back in the swing of things after the holidays. I also didn't overdo it over Christmas because I was sick :( I'm getting in all the workouts and hitting the 10s. Just having a bit of trouble with all the water! Burp!! Everyday, I see more improvement and Jack is so encouraging. Hope all Team 10 is having success!!

Oh Jim you sweet wonderful man!!!! You have no idea how badly I needed to hear this. ALL WEEK I have been saying I can't believe I did this, how could I let this happen, whats wrong with me? But you really hit the nail on the head. I don't want to just be a spectator, I want to be a consistent performer. So my pity party is over LOL. I have been doing pretty good this week. I have not missed a workout. My eating has been good. Water needs to improve but aside from that, not a bad start.

I have read numerous posts here on tracker from people who measured their self worth on how other people perceived them. It also dictates their mood and happiness; I know I was one of them. Too many years were wasted trying to live up to everyone else’s expectations. My happiness and self worth depended on other people’s opinions.
Never mind my goals or dreams; it was all about everyone else. According to my in-laws and my wife I needed to give up my acting career (my pipe dream as they called it) and get back in the real world and find a real job! Well I listen to them; I gave up my dream and went back into the medical field. I still do commercials and indie films but nothing like what I was doing before. Anyway, we were not put on this earth to live up to anyone’s expectations except Gods and He is the one who puts those dreams and desires in us and gives us those talents and gifts. I like what
Most of the time when you live your life to present it as a gift to God, your life becomes fulfilled and your dreams and expectations are met. However, when you live your life to live up to everyone else’s expectations you stop dreaming, you stop being you and you become miserable when you fail to live up to those expectations!
I for one have wasted too much time already trying to live my life to please everyone else. I am not saying to become selfish either, just your motivation for doing this challenge! Once you’ve experienced the accelerating feeling of finishing the challenge or challenges and changing your mind and body you’ll want to help others achieve there goals and dreams!
What are your expectations when it come to BFL? Are they your dreams and goals or are they for someone else?

I know what you are talking about. I was the same, but now this is all for me. I used to take notice of what people said and thought about me and how they perceived me in my appearance, etc.
I am doing this for me. It is nice when people acknowledge my progress, as it is a mood booster, but now if someone knocks me back with negative comments, I will just ignore them - as everyone is entitled to their opinion. I am not going to let it affect my mood - not any more!!!
BFL is a way for me to focus on my goals and dreams - which are totally for me. They can only be achieved if I do them. Also with the backing and following of the Tracker members, it all seems possible.

Norm, I'm right there with ya buddy. I used to worry that I just wasn't "good enough" in the eyes of others.
Not pretty enough, not smart enough, etc., etc.
Things didn't really start to turn around for me until I worried less about what others thought and more of what I thought of myself.
Today, I'm pretty enough (for me, and hot enough for my husband), I'm smarter than I ever gave myself credit for, I have far more ability than anyone else knows, and I am capable of doing ANYTHING I set my mind to.

You really do! It is amazing... last May my husband was ready to leave me because I wanted to compete. He was trying to force me into quitting with my dream. I fought like hell for my dream and my marriage. We received counseling and we both discovered balance between things and he was just jealous of my hobby because he could not understand it and also his own battles with his lack of fitness issues and mostly the understanding part. The bottom line is never in my life had I been held back from a dream or goal of mine. And for the first time I was faced with this challenge. It was a very rough month, but I stuck to my guns with my dream. I also stuck to my guns with my marriage too. Now I have the best support in the world from my husband and he actually has become a flippin NAZI with me and eating and he even gets mad if I cheat to much! WTH? LOL But it sure took a lot of work. Just thought I'd share that little story with ya.
You can't compromise your goals and wants for other people because resentment will set in and then you become a very unpleasant person to be around. The more I think about this post it really was phenomenal! Thanks!

Great and timely post! I know a lot of people here can relate. I spent most of my life worried about getting others' approval. That came from the abuse of my father more than anything else.
About 10 years ago I finally came to terms with it...a divorce will do that to you! What a burden it was to live like that all those years!

Thank you guys for your support yesterday! It really meant a lot to me! It went really well! They didn't "formally" hire me but are not interviewing anyone else and are just waiting for me to take the CPT Exam. I should be fnishing it next weekend. I can set my own hours but also need to consider the needs of my clients. I will get a base pay from the gym and then comission on each session. I can make anywhere from $10-$50/hr!! That would be great!
I am struggling with my personal feelings though. I was highly emotional yesterday at the thought of leaving my dear family. I guess instead of being excited after I left the interview it was more like a reality. If they hadn't liked me well then I would just be staying home with my family for now. Funny, I know! I feel a little better today though!

Hey Everyone! I have been listening to a free copy of KT's CD titled "How to lose 30 pounds in 30 days". I'm not really planing on following it (it was a free gift with his Natural Cures book). But there are some interesting things in there.
Curiously, he says ABSOLUTELY no tap water. I guess because of chlorine and flouride, etc. But on BFL I drink SO much water that bottled water seems ridiculous! Plus I live in Washington, and the tap water here doesn't taste so bad. When I lived in Vegas I NEVER drank tap water...too gross. Then he says only to eat organic veggies and meat. I agree with this, but I surely can't afford it. I have to buy my stuff at CostCo the way I go through it!
Anyone have any thoughts on KY's theories? Just curious...

I guess it depends on your water source. You can purify your own water with a Brita or some other sources. I am not sure that bottled water is all that much better. It takes some things out such a flouride and some minerals that you don't get in bottled water.
Organic foods are ALWAYS better, but if you can't get them....try to wash your fruits and veggies well and cook your meat well.
I am not sure that it helps for weight loss though. Interesting.

Kevin Trudeau has a sordid history with of making all sorts of unsubstantiated claims; he was indicted by the FTC in the late nineties for doing so. Heres the FTC filing:

That being said,it is generally a good idea to eat organic and definitely drink filtered water.Buy a brita, they are cheap. (Bottled water isn't such a good idea either though, only becuase somebody could essentially fill it with pond water and call it fresh, spring water. You can google bottled water truths and find a slew of information.)
If organics are too costly for you, thats coo, but remember you either pay now, or you pay later with your health. Its only logical to deduce that pesticides that are meant to kill insects aren't good for us either. I'm sorry, but I hate when people say they can't afford to buy organic and then go spend $100 on a pair of shoes.

I live in Austin, 10 minutes from the flagship whole foods so we're very lucky with the organics, both for their price and for ease of getting them.

I drink it right from the tap. I hate the taste of bottled water and the expense as well. Gallons and gallons of unfiltered tap water a week for my whole life basically and I've never had a side effect from it. I was going to buy some organic brown rice the other day it was 4.89 for the same size bag of non organic was 1.89 this is not rocket science. I already spend about 400-600 a month on groceries for just the 2 of us (usually closer to the 400 mark) but if I bought everything organinc it'd be over $1000.00 monthly?????

Don't be fooled by this "organic" label.
Marshmallows are labeled "fat free", which they are....but the sugar?
We get into "Low carb" "fat free" "sugar free" "no transfats" "organic"....
Bottom line is you need to research what gets this label. What is ORGANIC? Some things get this label but really just means it was grown in someone's garden with very little regulation on the type of growth.
Check it out first. Then determine if it is worth your expense.

i'm currently reading the book as well. some of his claims make a lot of sense, but i haven't decided how i feel about it all yet. i would love to be able to afford all organice food. we have such a problem with obesity in this country, yet we make it hard to afford high quality products and so much easier to afford crappy junk food. i use a brita filter. i'm thinking about trying out some of the weight loss ideas b/c they are healthy and make sense. for example, i'm gonna try eating more grapefruit.

Yes, I'd split the title (oh just to dream that I would have it!!) - there are so many deserving winners! But also, I'd love to see one female and one male winner. Each gender has a unique experience moving through their Challenges, and I'd like to see that recognized. All of us who are striving to that goal could benefit from the story and example of one of "our own."

I think they should stick to one this year, but review the possibility to having categories again next year. I too would have a hard time deciding this year, but they have already laid the foundation of rules this year so I do not think it would be appropriate to split the 2005 title.

I think it's a BAD IDEA, and makes the contest look like youth sports, where "everybody is a winner!" To me, it would be like just saying every team in the top ten in the nation is number one! But, what the heck--the rest of the world is going for these goofy "twists" and Bill did the first such twist when he changed the rules not in the middle but at the end of the game!

I've thought for a bit now that one grand champion just doesn't sit right on this challenge.
My problem remains, when you actually dig deep into the stories, how the heck do you pick?

When I started this program in Mar of 04 my resting heart rate was 83bpm. In Mar of 05 it was down to 60bpm
I just went and checked it again and it is still 60bpm
If you want to participate and record you resting heart rate for future reference go to the tools section then click on the BMR Fitness Calculators and go down to resting heart rate check yours and then post it here.

Good idea Rod! RHR is a good way to measure your progress. Increases in RHR can also tell you if you are overtraining or have an impending infection or cold.
Last time I checked mine it was about 47.

Mine is 44, 20 years ago my husband made me go to the Dr because it was so low, the Dr said, man I wish I was in that good of shape,
it was all the aerobics I did, for 15 years
when I stoped and got fat I was in the 60's,

I just counted 24 beats in 30 sec and it calculated 48 bpm
I have been sitting at the computer and going back and forth to the living roon so that was good, but not a true resting HR, you should take it in the morning before you even sit up or get out of the bed.

I called EAS and asked them why they don't consider people's complete transformations. Lots of people have more than 20-30 lbs of body fat to lose, so why don't they consider those transformations that occur over multiple challenges? I think that is more motivating than simply looking at a 3 month change. They didn't have an answer for me. They said they only look at each 12 wks individually. A true winner in my opinion is the person who sticks it out over multiple challenges and completely transforms their body and their body image of themselves. Maybe we should put in a suggestion to them that in future challenges they consider a winner category for multiple challenge participants or something. Just an idea...

My favorite he jshelton....and he keeps pluggin away! Probably the reason why I keep going knowing that my first challenge didn't produce great outwards changes. He is on challenge 5 and has serious health considerations.....so why can't I just keep trying?

Oh I whole heartedly agree. I am most impressed with the people who have made this a "life syle." So many come back saying they had successful challenges and have fallen back. I want to see the people who "Live it". I want to see someone who has 5 years of BFL behind him/her.

You know, they HAVE AWARDED and recognized multiple challenge people. One year they gave special recognition to a couple of people who lost over 100 pounds. I can't remember when it was but you could find it by surfing the champion stories year by year. And many champs have had multiple challenges and became a winner just for one 12 week challenge. Michelle Lee is one of those.

For marketing purposes I'm sure it's much more appealing to show a winner's picture on their product and say it only took 12 weeks. But it would be nice and I think quite beneficial for them to show how well this program works in the longer term. There's a lot of folks who would give BFL a try if they felt it would be a lifestyle they could live with for more than 12 weeks...
BTW - Thanks Teresa (tcstone)for the kind words. I get a big boost of motivation every time I hear that my progress has inspired someone to stick with it!

I am having a hard time and it is only day 5.It has been very stressful at home/work and I know that is part of it but I don't understand feeling so deprived and just alone with this whole challenge I feel I am a missfit this is crazy and no I am not PMSing for those who might be thinking that.I almost feel deprest.

Yea I think it has more to do with everything around me falling apart and things hitting us hard in the bank account.Itis so much to deal with and than tothink about what to eat and when to workout with NO support from the hubby makes it really hard.

Here's a thought...NOT eating right or NOT working out isn't going to improve any of those other things that are not perfect in your life right now.
Doing something that is THIS good for you can only BE GOOD FOR YOU. In every sense of the word. Remember that Serenity Prayer - God give me the strength and wisdom one. (Come on some help me here remembering that one.) Basically, control the things you can and let go of the things you can't. (Leave those things up to God to handle)
You'll do fine. Don't give up. Just keep plugging along. One day at a time.

I agree with Jennifer A. I felt the same way yesterday. But I remembered what the BFL journal said one day (if you don't have one you should get one). To paraphrase becsause I don't have the book here...it is doing "it" when you don't want to that makes you stronger. Yesterday I didn't get home until 8:55 and wasn't going to go to the gym. I thought about that statement and went anyway. Guess what? I have been on a high all day from over coming myself! It makes it easier to deal with the other things if you are in control of SOMEthing!

I will add that NOT doing BFL will only add to your stress! Of course, it'll take a couple of weeks or so to get the routine established so that it won't seem overwhelming.

Ok all u moms:
OBVIOUSLY you can tell by my picture that I have quite the baby fat left over! I gained 80lbs with him and it shows. (oh lots of stretch marks too) Anyhow, I had a c-section and now I call what I have a "mudslide" :-) How easy will it be or is it even possible to lose this. Will it turn into stretched skin when I lose the fat that is making it bulge?
Either way, Im not giving up, It just doesnt look very good lol.
Any input would be great!

I hear ya!! Well, I don't have the c-section scar but I have TONS of stretch marks! I have heard(HOPE to find out for myself soon!) That if you lose the weight slowly and properly, it helps reduce skin sag because the skin has time to shrink with your body. However, I can't say thats true for the stretchmark area. So far, the stretchmarks and the skin around them have shrunk, but I have a ways to go to see how far down it goes. I'l keep you posted!

check out www.buffmother.com...she has led me to believe that as long as you are lifting weights and doing...well, basically BFL, the skin will tighten and you can look awesome again...I need the hope! My husband's mom (a nurse) has told me I can never look like I did before kids and I'm ready to prove her wrong.

Stretch marks can be inherited. They do not go away some girls do not get them. Girls on both sides of my family had them and so do I. I do have some stretched skin that looks lose when I sit down. It isn't that bad though I can still wear a bikini.

Newbie here too. Almost a week and doing good. My boyfriend though, doesn't eat the best, but I am not and haven't been eating the junk he brings into the house. Surprisingly the will power is coming back.

Way to go Heavyweight... I wish my will power would come back. My wife is on the other end of the scale from me... She is pretty skinny and needs to gain weight for health reasons and it is a struggle for me because her doctors tell her to keep the cabinets full of weight gaining (junk) food. I really have to dig deep and find that will power that I had when this challenge was new and just do it! Keep up the good work Heavyweight, I'm confident you can make it happen!

If you really pushed yourself hard your legs can be sore for a week or so, BUT DO NOT LET UP!!!! your body will adjust to the trauma you're putting it through and in a few weeks you'll be saying to yourself "hey why dosen't it hurt anymore? am I not pushing hard enough?" Trust me every time I need to get up or down right now it's quite a process. If my fiance even so much as touches my leg, well she knows not to now lol. Wait until you bump into something ouch that REALLY hurts. Lots of whey protien and rest and if you can afford it betagen and glutamine all assist in the recovery process.

YEAH---RIGHT, this morning was the worst so far this week; I look at it as a good thing though, I'm working new muscle groups OR I'm working them better than before. Either way, it's a plus

Any age.....any gender.....no matter the experience. If you are hitting your tens........you'll hurt. Now, the hurt may decrease in intensity and length of time as you become more seasoned, but you'll hurt. And that hurt makes me smile.
Keep at it, it gets better. Especially when you see and feel the results.

Its my day 2 after my first good LBWO in a long time, and I am DYING! I would be fine if I didnt have to sit, stand, or run to the phone (missed some calls today! LOL) And why the heck do I seem to keep dropping things?? I have to keep bending down to pick things up!!! The kids are sick of me saying "honey could you get that for me??" They're looking at me like Im insane "Mom, its right by your foot!"

As long as you continue to workout, the pain is not nearly as bad, but if you constantly stop and restart your program you will have to go through the initial pain all over again.

Are you new to lifting weights? If you are, you may not be familiar with something called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). This is the natural reaction of your body to starting an intense lifting program.
Since the goal of resistance training is to break muscle down in order to build it back up. Since you are actually tearing the muscle to do this, it's gonna hurt AFTER you work out. :)
If you are brand spankin new I suggest the following- start your intervals at the lowest possible weight, and then move up using the smallest interval available to you the first week. How much you lift isn't important, it's how you lift it. Don't worry, you will be able to move to heavier weights soon. :)
After your workout, stretch. It's going to help with lactic acid build up. I am also a huge advocate of ice. My leg workouts regularly trash the heck out of my legs. I've gotten in the habit of icing my legs during the day after my workout. This speeds my recovery, and frankly I feel better.
If you are using suppliments, I strongly suggest using a suppliment with HMB which has been proven to aid in reducing DOMS and speeding recovery. Betagen from EAS is a great source.
Finally, remember that your intensity levels will vary day to day, workout to workout. So if your next workout is less intense than "normal" due to muscle soreness, don't stress. Remember your 10 is your max effort for THAT DAY.
Oh! And if you have joint pain, or hear something go snap, crackle, or pop- STOP. Get ice on it, and get to the doctor. Snap, crackle, and pop are not BFL authorized. :) They are possible signs of serious injury.

You need to change up evry 4th and 5th workout as the book says.
I found that switching between free wieghts and machines helps and alway throw in some shockers with lunges, squats etc.

Personally, I don't like doing the exact same workout twice in a row, but that's just me. Your body CAN get used to a workout, but generally that is if you do the exact same exercises workout after workout.
If you notice yourself not making any gains, then you may need to rethink doing workouts by the book, but if you're still making progress, then you're fine.

I agree as well! Muscles have amazing memory and it is VERY important to change it up! I am doing challenge 2 and I changed my rep range from 12-10-8-6-12 to 15-12-10-8-15...increased reps to help focus more on burning fat vs. muscle gain

When my body adapts, and I've tried different exercises, I work in a couple minutes high intensitiy cardio between muscle groups to get the blood going and speed up my metabolism. If your trainer thinks your body will become unaffected by your workouts, what suggestions did your trainer have? Are you increasing weight and hitting 10's everytime? I'm sore almost everyday, and yet since I don't want huge muscles, there will be a point I won't let myself increase weights. I'll probably keep switching up the exercises, and add cardio, and increase my reps to hit the 10...like as many as I can do, until failure sort of thing.

I rotate 3 UBWO's and 3 LBWO's to keep things fresh. I try to vary upper, mid and lower chest; front, side, and rear laterals, etc. I then re-vamp the 6 workouts between challenges... and I stay sore from week to week (and I'm finishing my 5th challenge). I like to keep my muscles guessing.

He is absolutely true! But dont fear...this still doesnt mean you need a personal trainer, it just means you need to change exercises. Instead of doing a bench press do flys. Instead of doing chest first, do your back first. All this is doing is tricking your body, making it think you are doing something really big and different. It's amazing the difference you will see and feel when you switch up your routine.
So switch it up and have some fun!!!
