my first lbwo was last week and my legs were SOOOOO sore the whole weekend. I seriously looked like I was crippled. Monday night I did legs again and even added weights to the workout and I felt 100% stronger. I am not near as sore this time around...I think it is normal. Your body is getting used to the new routine :0)

I've been working out a while now and I can tell you that I don't think I have EVER gotten my legs as sore as they are now from my LBWO on Monday! I think its a good thing! It means I changed up my routine and it worked! Just when those suckers thought they got it all figured out and wouldn't hurt anymore I hit them with a 1-2 and got 'em good!

i read so many people that are starting their new challanges after having done it before, Is there a program that lets you stabalize after 12 weeks? I dont want to continue getting bigger and bigger! Once I reach my level of fitness I just want to keep it. Any thoughts or answers?

To get "bigger and bigger" you have to train for that and train good and hard. Its doubtful that anyone who does not want that to happen will end up looking like Arnold. Most of us wish that would happen but wishing for it and working for it STILL doesn't necessarily make it happen very quickly.

You're not going to get bigger and bigger. You might get stronger, though. At any rate, you just adjust your training and eating to maintain rather than to build muscle and/or burn fat. For me, what's after 12 weeks is another 12 weeks, lol.

I just read something that scared me to death. "This months Scoop: Splend-Aid!" OMG! This is suggesting that everyone try using Splenda Brand Sweetener. I have to raise a red flag here and post some information about Splenda/Sucralose for everyone to read. Please take the time and read what is written here. After you have read the information, it will be up to you to choose whether or not you want to consume this product. All I can do is offer you the information. As for me and my family, we will stay away from this product. Here is the information: As Dr. Janet Hull writes in her July newsletter, eating sucralose--brand name Splenda--is like ingesting tiny amounts of chlorinated pesticides. If this sounds unappealing to you, it certainly doesn't to Splenda's marketing team, who say they've "done a great job of redefining sweetness." Splenda, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1988 as a tabletop sweetener and sweetener for an array of other products, is a chlorocarbon. Chlorocarbons are known to cause organ, genetic and reproductive damage, which may explain why Splenda has been found to shrink the thymus gland--a foundation of the immune system--by 40 percent. According to Dr. Hull, sucralose also causes: Swelling of the liver and kidneys Calcification of the kidney Fertility issues in male rats Gastrointestinal problems in pregnant rats It is especially important to stop using Splenda immediately if you experience kidney pain, cramping, swelling, an irritated bladder, or blood in your urine, she says. It is also interesting to note the information taken directly from a statement from the manufacturer of Splenda: 'Sucralose is made from sugar, but is derived from sucrose (sugar) through a process that selectively substitutes three atoms of chlorine for three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sucrose molecule. I have always heard negative things about aspartame, but had no idea these thought/claims carried over to Splenda. I always wondered when something would come out about Splenda. I use Splenda in everything!! I don't use it in large amounts by any means...just what the recipes call for in the EFL book. I am just curious...what do you use for an artifical sweetner, or do you use anything at all?

There was something on this a long time ago and it was basically that they took something way out of context and turned it into this report. I would not worry to much about it. If you are worried about it you can use Stevia instead. Which is from a plant and found in the herbal sections & health food stores. Personally Stevia gives me terrible headaches. I prefer Splenda. Much better than the large amounts of sugar I used to crave & eat with a vengeance. You have to also take into consideration the amount you would have to consume daily for those side effects to possibly happen. If they do? Also Splenda is made from sugar it is the method & process of getting it that everyone went crazy about.

It took a while to get rid of the sweet tooth, but once you get used to eating foods without the sugary taste it's no big deal. Not to mention that it's way healthier for you to avoid PROCESSED sugars as well as ARTIFICIAL sweeteners at all times. I recommend using Stevia if you absolutely need a sweetener. You can purchase Stevia at your local health food store. Some health food stores will even let you taste it before you buy it!

Water is chlorinated and that is why it is suggested that you dring bottled water and/or filter your water before drinking it. Chlorine is HORRIBLE on a person's body.

Here is some food for thought: Obesity causes more problems such as heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure etc.. and there are many studies that haven proven to show that obesity & weight problems are the root of these such problems. And known killers. Splenda on the other hand has not been proven either way scientifically to be healthy or unhealthy. It is just word of mouth that people are hearing about right now. So I would much rather use splenda than use sugar which will add hundreds and thousands of calories (not to mention is insanely addictive too) that would cause me to gain a lot of weight. So I will take my chances with splenda than taking a chance of becoming obese and unhappy. Once again everything in moderation. I don't think I am gonna quit using a 2 pkts of splenda and a little bit here and there for some sugar or nothing blahhhh.... I am sorry I just think those things are phooey that those people wrote sorry my opinion. Something to over sensationalize things. C'mon have you ever really heard or known someone to get cancer from sweet n' low? There is no scientific proof that the person got it specifically from that product. Cancer is caused by many different things. One being the air we breath. So they say. Also genetics have been linked to cancer. It would be hard to say oooohhhh you used some splenda thats where you got it from. Just my 2 cents.

Wooww.. aspertame, doesn't cause obesity and is not linked to disease. This such a debatable topic, however their is not enough data to "proove" that these things happen when consuming aspertame. their has NOT been any solid methods or theories to strongly back that up. As far as, splenda: Beans cause gastronitestinal problems, its called, farting! Milk causes calcifilcation history, yes even milk, just check out the milk webistes and the horrible things dr.say about it. Swelling in our liver can be cause by alcohol, so, where do we draw the line. It all falls back to moderation.

Just like all the supplements that we take almost all consumables can be linked to this or that. If you get caught up in everything you will go crazy. Just exercise and eat healthy and hopefully you will live long and prosperous. Everyones body is different and handles the substances differently, hell my grandmother is 83 and has smoked since she was 14 and she is in awesome condition. It is a risk to do some things but it is also a choice, the outcome is unknown but don't make yourself crazy over sweetners.

THESE DAYS, trying to eat "all natural" is almost like trying to figure out how to "buy American." ALmost nothing any more comes in a truly natural condition, be it sugar or anything else. I am supportive of the rights of people to eat and drink "all natural" to the extent they want. Whew, I'm okay then - I'm only at 900 packets a day. I don't believe the teeny bit of splenda I use is going to cause any ill effects to my health. There are SO MANY other things with the food we eat (milk, beef, chicken - horrors if we're talking dangerous foods) that the splenda looks like a grain of splenda next to these issues.

Thanks, Michiganmike... that's my problem too. That Mercola is not a valid source as far as I am concerned. If someone chooses not to use Splenda or anything else, that is by all means their right. But I'm pretty sick of the scaremongering that happens about these sweeteners, most of which can be traced back to someone who will possibly benefit from you switching way from Splenda or whatever is being touted as the world's biggest nutrition danger this week. MomOfThree, I'm not directing that at you, but rather at the sources you've posted. I think whenever one of these types of articles comes up, we tend to freak out and often without all the facts. Like TNT's reference to needing to eat 1000 packets a day of Splenda to replicate the effect it had in rats. The same molecules in chlorine are used in other things we eat every day (like table salt). I remember when my dad, who was diabetic, swore off saccharin because it caused cancer in rats. When they gave rats saccharin by the gallon, yep, they got cancer. Turns out now saccharine isn't such a big risk. My dad switched to Equal, which is now the big evil (unless you count Splenda, lol). Looks like we all need to just grow our own food and raise our own farm animals for meat to avoid dying from the foods we eat, at least until "Dr" Mercola reports that any food exposed to sunshine causes cancer and we have to eat nothing but potatoes. :P

I have issues with regular whey products outside of Myoplex. I can't stand the aftertaste and can't seem to cover the taste up without going all out and busting out the blender. Hey, Just wondered what everyone thought about just using the body for life bars instead of the myoplex shakes? The bars seem to be pretty tasty, as far as diet bars go, but I am having a hard time choking down the shakes. I have even tried using more water, using half of the packet, and so on. I have only tried the tropical ones, so if anyone likes the others better, let me know!!! I'm a newbie and am just trying to figure everything out! Thanks, much appreciated!

I personally only use the bars as a last resort emergency back up device. Food is best. When you can't have food, have a shake. I've had the tropicals and think they are the worst ones yet. In fact, I've had all the mixes and believe they all suck but thats just my opinion. I buy the strawberry Carb Sense ready to drinks..again for emergencies and leave em in my car. Try some whey powder, I use the EAS Vanilla whey and then add things like bananas, flavorings, etc. in a blender with a few cubes of ice. Some flavoring suggestions may be: mint, banana, cinnamin, butter flavor, cocoa, root beer, maple, pineapple, coconut. Have fun with them... The bars are loaded with a bunch of stuff you're body doesn't necessarily need. Hope this was helpful :)

Shakes are definately better then bars. Bars have more sugar and IMHO should be used when absolutely necessary but not all the time. Maybe once a day. I am trying my best to choke down the rest of my box of tropical myoplex's as well, bleh! I will drink them cause I want my hot bod back, lol. Not my favorite though. I LOVE the vanilla ones! They are definately my fav!! You can add anything to them. Sometimes I add sugar free banana pudding mix, sometimes the sugar cheesecake mix and it's oh so yummy!! Try a different flavor and like can'tstopme said, whole foods are always the better choice. I drink 3 shakes a day though for convenience and my vitamin source. HTH!! Shelly =)

The protein bars totally suck! They are candy bars with extra protein in them, making them not fit as candy or as a good source of protein! The only reason they are marketed is because the companies make a pile of money on them; they take up very little shelf space, and they stay "fresh" (read as "chewy") forever it seems. Too much sugar, not enough good quality protein, too much fat; they are crap!

omg....I LOVED the tropical Myoplex shakes! There is lots a debate about bars....many people say too much sugar, not filling, not good enough, whole food better....the list goes on. I use them. Probably twice a week or on the go. But not in replacement of a Myoplex. I try to have 1-2 Myoplex a day. Sometimes I eat 6 whole food meals. I just depends on the day. If you can vary your eating schedule up, I would not rely on the bars as a daily meal. teresa

Personally I think whole foods are best, if you can swing it with 6 meals a day. I don't usually like the ready to go shakes, but the vanilla myoplex packages are wonderful if you blend them with a few frozen strawberries. I'm sure other fruits would work well. I don't think you need to use the shakes or the bars, if you don't like them, they are just to make it easier to eat 6 meals a day. They also are very pricey.

Actually a shake comes out cheaper than most meals if you break it down. Around a buck a shake. Also get all of your vitamins and minerals. Bill Philips recommends 3 shakes and 3 meals. I would follow that. Bars are glorified candy.

well now, not sure what you state you are in..but I work in the legal field AND... in our state every driver on the road has a legal "duty" to drive safely, yield to other vehicles, control their vehicle, etc.... so yes, you should take action....on the other hand.... I would have followe that bus to its next stop and gotten the info then...driver's name, etc... you basically were involved in a hit and run. Also, there would have been witnesses correct? well now...here I go.... I LOVE MUSIC>...all kinds... play two instruments, learned it my whole life...ALSO..grew up in one of those extremely fundamental christian schools that would kick you out for listening to it.... that being said...of course I did... we ALL did...we all snuck and I was one of the FEW that had the original 2 live crew that WASN"T edited...and yes, I was very cool...LOL...so, I have 5 kids, 4 of which are boys..and kids are smart... I love rap...which of course has filthy lyrics..my kids and I listen together in the car..and my 13 yaer old daughter always bleeps the bad words...it is pretty funny and my boys will yell in unison while we are all singing.. "bad word" over the bad words...so no, I don't think that the music creates horrific people... as long as you are teaching your kids the difference between right and wrong anyway.... addendum...I ALSO don't really think the "video games" made Columbine happen.... get my drift? Parents need to parent...and that can be done by saying... this song has filthy lyrics, I do NOT agree with them...heck yeah it has a great beat, don't sing it in front of your grandmother. :)

similar marker incident at a family funtion. kids were busy inside the house doing you know kid stuff. In the basement there is the fathers cave with 60" HDTV and assorted stuff to just sit down there with nothing else better to do. Also there is toys there, nothing to do right?? why not watch the kids? Well anyway, there is a microwave down there and the kids were using it as a timer to keep track of sharing the toys and stuff. Along the evening someone decided to put markers in there... lets just say it was fairly easy to clean up. Mostly just the fuzzy stuff and a lot of color.

Amkazen, I had a similar experience with my son last night. Go figure! He is two also and this is what I learned from my older child. The first time she did that it was an experiment. The second time will be to see how you react. She will look right at you when you are doing it to see what you do. Now is a great time to start to teach her about feelings. Next time she does that or anything similar, try making a very sad face and saying "OW, that hurts daddy". She might cry and she might laugh and then show her what a gentle touch is. Open up her little fist and touch it to your face gently, then say "nice". This worked for my daughter and I am now teaching it to my son. Of course, you will have to do it 500 times, but it will eventually work. Hope your lip is ok!

Kids are soooo theatrical. WHo needs to pay $8 to see a movie. I have my own entertainment in the luxury of my own home. My youngest son had a sore throat and I bought the medicated suckers, knowing for sure that my son would accept a sucker (CANDY!)...I handed it to him and said, "here you go honey, this will make your throat feel better, ok?" he nodded with his pouty mouth and said "ok" and proceeded to put the sucker under his chin and rested it on his throat....he took me literally when I told him it would make his throat feel better. It reminded me of the time my oldest had a cold and put two baby asprin in his nostrils when I told him that the medicine would make his nose feel better (running a cold/fever)

im nervous about going to work today, i work in a store with one other woman and usually we work together until 4 and im there until 5, but today shell be gone all day and ill be by myself. that wouldnt usually bother me, but yesterday we had an incident. there was these guys that was doing some work for our company and one of them was using foul language in front of the customers and it was offending us so my manager asked him to stop or he'd have to leave and we would get someone else to do the work. so ok he stopped and they left. but a hour later he came back by himself in his personal car and threatend us to give him the name of the customer that complained about his cursingso he could fight him!! he was irate and aggressive and after refusing to leave we told him we were goign to call the police and he finally left. but who the heck does that?!?! why in the world would he have come back to try and scare us?? but anyway, i bought some pepper spray last night. lol. but im worried hes going to come back again. anyway, i know this isnt bfl related but i needed to vent. i gotta get going to work! hopefully it will be boring! alexis

Some people just want to intimidate because they are feeling low on themselves. Just your cool, your confidence, and your pepper spray with you! Also keep the phone. Call the police if he comes back again. Don't even give him a chance to be warned. If you are scared....call them. If you are really scared...call them now, explain what happened and ask them to keep your store on patrol. Just don't cave in to his intimidation...even if you want to. Ditto on what Dana said. This guy doesn't sound like some schoolyard bully with a low self esteem problem who needs a good standing-up to. Your boss needs to be concerned with your safety. Period. If you feel this person would harm you in any way it is your responsibility to protect yourself. I've just started like you peg, and am looking forward to a nice bacon sandwich and some cookies on Sunday :) One thing I would say reading the above posts is that yes, the free day becomes self regulating as time goes on, but new BFLers shouldn't be discouraged from eating what they want on their free days to start off. I lost 30lbs of B/F on my 1st BFL and had a good few mega-binges on my first couple of off days (food and beers). The free day is part of the program, so don't feel guilty about overeating or having to do cardios on off days etc as some have advised, as you will still get amazing results as long as you are following the program strictly.

Its not a day to go crazy, its my day to enjoy some treats, or if theres a special something happening, I declare my free day then, so Its like I allow myself some treat/s. Example soemtimes I chose movies on free day, so I enjoy my nachos guiltfree. I found that theres just so much junk the body will take, after a treat for breakfast, then a free lunch, My dinner, my body is literally craving healthy, so I follow that. Since taking free days, I feel a difference in my progress for the better...Just dont pig out, enjoy some treats.

I make it a meal with skim milk and 3/4 c. cottage cheese (obviously separate). It comes out to a very nice balance of protein/carbs. And four carbs more than the protein isn't too high in carbs. Just look at the EFL meals--they are usually higher in carbs.

I just posted something similar in another topic (LOL). Anyways, I like the Kashi GoLean cereals. It has 13g protein, 30g carb (10g fiber, 6g sugar), 1g fat, and 140 calories per serving of 1 cup. For 3/4 cups, it's 110 calories.

I think I'd pass on the creamer and add maybe a shot of skim milk and a little splenda. This way you are also getting your protein, where creamer has 0. Hope this helps xoxo karen

I use the CoffeeMate Fat Free Non-Dairy Creamer. Here are the stats: Calories: 10 Fat: 0 Cholesterol: 0 Carbs: 2 (but not from sugar) Proteins: 0 And a serving size is a tablespoon. I cant tell the difference from regular creamer! Also, if you like flavors, try some sugar free Torani syrup or DaVinci Syrup, they are made with splenda and come in hundreds of flavors. wd.....Ive always used non dairy creamer & Sweet n low or splenda. I just started adding 1/2 a shot of the sugarfree/calorie free Torani syrup and it hasnt had any negetive effects on my progress. There is just no way I can give up my coffee and creamer in the morning!! I use either the FF hazelnut or now they came out with carb-conscious FF hazelnut creamer! For the tiny amount I put in my coffee, I don't think it's all that bad...especially since I don't add any additional sugars. I tried soy milk in coffee, and it just doesn't taste right!

I am going on a Business trip next week. I am driving with two fellow coworkers. We leave Wednesday around 1pm and will arrive at the hotel around 6 or 7. I assume I will be eating out that night so no big deal...I can take some snacks for the car. What do I do on Thursday and Friday? I will be in long meetings all day both days? I am used to packing my snacks and lunches the night before and having access to a refrigerator. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can take that does not require a refrigerator and can counts as my snacks/meals? They are providing lunch, but I am afraid that it might be pizza so I want to plan ahead. I also need somethiing that will not be distracting if I pull it out and start eating discretely during the meeting. Thanks! wdfrank

I've been faced with this many times, and always try to have bars and/or RTD shakes on hand. If worse comes to worse, just don't over do it on the pizza, or whatever unauthorized foods may be served.

Great suggestions! I really do not want to make those my free days, but I will definately keep that in mind. I think I am going to stock up on the bars and maybe make a nut/dried fruit mix and put in those little snack backs. I can keep those with me in the meeting as well as have my water bottle so I can stay hydrated. Does anyone have suggestions on dried fruit that is BFL authorized? and what I can mix with it to make a 'trail mix' of sort? I have been known to pack lots of hard boiled eggs to take with me for day-long meetings. Then, I take a "bathroom break" where I crack and rinse off the eggs in the sink. Don't worry about what people will think of you doing this in the bathroom. They'll be too freaked out to ask! HA. Also - cheese sticks will last nearly a whole day out of the refrigerator. Take a few packets of Myoplex. Easy to mix in the hotel room.

But, I can see how the convenience of having them would be for a lunch meal. Most come with your protein and veggie, so technically it would be balanced carb/protein combo. They are loaded with sodium but if you drink a lot of water (which you should be already ;-) with them no big deal. The south Beach ones are good too esp. if you are in a pinch. Personally I find it cheaper just to pack my own chicken/ brown rice/ frozen veggies in a container. Pop it in the Microwave shhhazaam. But to answer your question most of them are alright. Better than a quarter pounder with cheese or a hungryman right? lol.

Here's a recipe I use all the time: Cinnamon Protein Pancakes:

2 cups cottage cheese

2 cups egg substitute

2 1/2 cups old fashioned oats

2/3 cup Splenda

1/2 tsp baking soda

2 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp vanilla

Here's the key: Put all in a food processor or blender and blend until smooth (otherwise you have pancakes with CURDS in them- yuck!). Sometimes I add in a few frozen blueberries, raisins, or chopped walnuts to change the flavor a bit. Cook on a pancake griddle or fry pan sprayed with Pam until golden brown on both sides. Makes 6 3-pancake servings (each pancake about three to 4 inches in diameter, depending on how thick your batter is). Have fun. These freeze well, by the way. I freeze them on Sunday afternoon and toast them each morning before eating. On free day, I even put strawberry jam and peanut butter on them. Most often I just add a few fresh or frozen blueberries to each pancake as its cooking. Yummy! Even my kid likes these :) Per serving: 283 calories, 27 grams protein, 30 grams carbs, 6 grams fat!

I have just found the BFL Calculator (don't know why I didnt' see it before - today is my Day 7 of my first challenge), but I have a question. I thought it wise to get the collective input/expertise of others with more experience. I currently weigh about 295lbs (5'6") so I have a LOT to lose. However, according to the calculator, if I want to lose weight it is telling me I am supposed to eat 2950 calories a day! This has got to be wrong! In the past 7 days, my intake has averaged around 1700-1800 calories and I can't even imagine going that high. I do monitor my carb/protein/fat percentages and I see that I will need to try to get to 20% fat(been averaging 30%), but is the calories right? Any insight anyone can offer would be useful. Thanks! Most people do what Bill says in the book. Use your hand to figure your portion sizes. I wouldn't worry about calorie counting at the first, at least. You should try to eat every 2-3 hours and the goal should be to just be hungry at that 2-3 hour mark. If you are starving...you are probably not eating big enough portions... if you're still not hungry... you are probably eating a bit too much. It takes about 4-6 weeks to really get into a good groove with the 5-6 meals thing. Just make good food choices, drink your water (at least a gallon), and get your 10s!!!

Just to play the devil's advocate... I'd say your 1700-1800 calories a day is a better number than nearly 3000! I eat around 1800 calories a day currently and I am a size 2/4.

The important thing is to do the program exactly as the book says.  Get in good workouts... try not to miss ANY... and eat just like he says.  If you do that, you will probably see AT LEAST two dress sizes go down in just your first challenge.  Amazing things happen!

Well, as someone with more to lose....you have to eat more to lose more. Follow the hand guidelines, but try logging it into fitday.com and see where you truely are. At about 300 more calories a week and see if you lose more with the increase food. I think you will find overall that you can eat more, you just have to adjust how much you eat as you lose weight. T

I have to agree that it IS a workout...not a HIIT of course, but it can be pretty intense. I go at a pretty swift pace and like Ursula said, up and down that ladder a gazillion times... I guess it's like walking....go at a slow pace and it's no better than everyday stuff, but speed things up and you've got a cardio session. Anyway, I'm not susbtituting just yet but I won't feel too guity about skipping a workout if I've painted all day. Eileen

The difference between the lying triceps extension and the dumbbell pullover is as follows: Triceps extension: only the elbow flexes and the forearm moves up and down, working the triceps. Dumbbell pullover: the whole arm moves and the elbow doesn't flex as much, working the chest and upper back. One of the best back exercises is the spine strengthener. Balance yourself face down on your elbows and toes (knees for a beginner). Hold your body in a straight line from shoulders to heels. Keep your butt down in the line. Hold this position for as many seconds as you can, building up to 45-60 seconds. I did this one for years and it really built up my torso strength. Search the various sites for core exercises; most of them are done on the mat.

Northern Belle is right, lower back pain comes from a weak core. I have many back problems and have been seeing a spine specialist for awhile now. He swears that almost every one he sees who complains about low back pain has a very weak lower abdominal muscle. One of the exercises he has me do to strengthen this muscle is to lie on my side my legs straight (like a board) and a pillow between them, then I flex my abdominals and lift both legs off the floor, squeezing the pillow together hard so that someone can't pull it out. Hold for 4 to 10 seconds. After you have completed 5 to 10 reps, switch sides. It doesn't sound hard, but it is. Also, if she is having lower back pain, maybe her doctor can refer her to a physical therapist who specialize in spine problems.

I feel in love with cycling about six months ago. I have been doing my 1 minute rest between sets, but it is hard sometimes. I'm pretty hyperactive anyway and sitting still waiting for the next set just feels wrong and can be a bit boring. Are you supposed to do NOTHING during the rest? Today I did my UBWO in my living room and during one rest minute, I went to the kitchen and peeled an egg. During another, I got out the rest of the ingredients for my tuna salad. I thought about unloading the dishwasher, but that would take more than 1 minute... Sometimes I try to do a stomach vacuum for at least 30 of the seconds (is this an ok thing to do during a "rest?") and I really have no idea what I do the other times other than just wait. I look around the gym sometimes and see all these people just SITTING there on the machines...doing their rest minutes too I suppose and it looks pretty funny sometimes. What do you do b/w sets? And do you really wait the full minute? Now to go unload the dishwasher for real...and eat my tuna... Eileen

I use freeweights, so changing them takes a bit. We have a heavy bag in our workout room, do leg kicks (knee high, extend...) Stretch the muscle you are working. I do a lot of calf stretches to help limit heel spurs and shin splints.

I to used to be one of those nervous, fidgety, hyper, people. LOL. One time we added in Sprints in between each exercise uhhhh I will never forget that experience. I now enjoy that min to recoup and get ready to give it all I got. I try to get as relaxed as possible and concentrate on what muscles I ma working on and form. BTW I don't recommend sprinting in between sets lol. Try upping the weight and make them more challenging so you feel the need to recoup? ;-) Oh yes drink water in between is "great" advice as well.

It's fine to take 30 seconds between the first couple of sets. After that, you should be working hard enough that you need that minute to catch your breath. If you're not, UP THE WEIGHTS AND THE INTENSITY! While you're catching your breath, write in your journal and record the lifts and weights, or get the weights ready for the next set. If you really can't stand waiting, you can do supersets of opposing muscle groups. FOR EXAMPLE, while resting from biceps curls, you can do triceps pushdowns. Or, while resting from dumbbell presses, you can do dumbbell or cable rows. This is not the best use of your time, though, but it will help to get you in and out in about 35 minutes if you're really pressed for workout time.

I think if it is not a habit it is fine, and this contest is about doing your best, so I think that is fine as well but you should get agreement from others as well on that since I'm biased! Technical explanations are pretty good at the hussman site about how lifting, hiit and extra cardio work together. I do it all the time. Also, according to my polar heart rate monitor I burned 93 calories last night during 45 min of UBWO. IT calculates this using sex, age, weight, and your heart rate as you work out.

I don't see a problem. I've done it before. Just try not to make a habit of it. I try not to do LBWO and HIIT on the same day though. That's too much stress on your legs. I guess if you have to do LBWO and HIIT, you can use a rowing machine for your cardio. I, personally, couldn't get a good cardio workout out of the rowing machine, but other people do. I guess it depends on the person.

I really think that trying to calculate a realistic calorie burn for a resistance training session--or any session for that matter--is useless. It depends on so many variables, your weight, your workload, your muscle bulk, how efficient your lungs are, the temperature of the room, whether you're using stimulants, that anything other than a ballpark estimate is impossible! However, I do think it's a good idea a few times to wear a Heart rate monitor because it helps to see just how high the heart rate can get if you do a resistance training session by the book with as much weight as you can handle. It helps to see that the 45 minutes of resistance training is done with the heart rate at a cardio effective level for over half the time. That's one of the reasons only three twenty minute cardio sessions are needed--because the heart and lungs get quite a workout during the lifting sessions.

I am finding it difficult to hit 10's on this. For quads, I am doing dumbbell squats (10,12,15,20,15 lbs.) and then leg press at 70 lbs. I could go up to 25 lb dumbells I guess but somehow those just seem to heavy to do squats with. Any suggestions??

Ahhh yes, can't squat to pee syndrome! A friend of mine actually had her bathroom re-done in '03 when we were doing BFL for the first time and she had a handicapped toilet installed (just the high throne, not the hand rails) for that VERY reason!!

Last free day was AWESOME! I had to work-early and I had to work 15 hours. I had the energy to do so because I had a blueberry muffin in the morning, 2 pc of pizza at lunch time, when I got home I had 5 of my favorite cookies in the world...from Honolulu cookie company - shortbread - some were dipped in chocolate! Then we went to dinner and I had Mahi Mahi with garlic bread and acini pasta. I woke up Monday motivated, energized and ready to diet all week, and I feel GREAT! NO FOOD HANG OVER!!! Sometimes, the free day can really give you a break and a 'lift'. I think it sped up my metabolism, I am loosing weight this week for sure.

Free day is what gets me through the rest of the week. If I have a craving for lets say a cheeseburger, whatever, it helps me to say to myself "I'm def. having that on free day". If I didn't have that to look forward to and was instead forced to say "I can't wait til I lose ALL this weight so I can have one" I would probably end up having it, feeling like crap and then blowng the whole diet.

Thanks all! To answer some questions...my eating is really evenly spaced out and I get all six meals in every day. I am already anemic, but I have different symptoms when I'm having problems with my iron levels. And my iron levels have been really good since starting BFL. My sugar level was low on my last bloodwork, and the doc made a comment about it, but didn't seem too concerned. After seeing her today, she said it didn't sound like a potassium deficiency (which she has already been checking because I've been on a water retention medication for quite some time). She said it is more than likely that my sugar levels are taking a dip after lunch because of what I'm eating for lunch. Today I had my apple with my lunch instead of with my morning snack and I was much better. I'm just going to have to play with the foods a while till I have it down pat to make sure my sugar intake is evenly spread out as well. It's a relief to know that it's an easy fix! Jennifer

Thanks guys. Yes I have been on different antibiotics, the pill, accutane, the pill and accutane at the same time. (lots of side effects on that one) and lots of different creams. The creams damaged the top layer of my skin and are now sensitive to normal creams etc.I have been to different dermotoligists. I am now since yesterday on a restrictive diet, no bread and sugars. Have to eat at the same times everyday. I will continue exercising because thinking about it helps eliminate stress and makes me feel good. Thanks for all the advise. I really appreciate it.

I too have struggled with depression and anxiety and health problems due to it (chronic headaches, irregular periods, stomach upset, etc.). I am just starting challenge 2 today and I've found during my first challenge that my depression really lifted. In fact, one of my goals is to get off meds completely. It's normal to have bad days, but hopefully through positive reinforcement and trying to have a good outlook that will help you. Good luck!

I have my goals up next to the free calendar I got with Oxygen magazine. Each month has a different fitness competitor with an awesome body and fitness tips. I put a star on each day I workout. I'm also doing the bodyforlifers 12 week challenge so I made a chart to log my weight each week. Hopefully, I stay motivated and see great progress!! Angel

I have a pretty funny story about the gym. So, there's this guy at the gym... mid twenties and SUPER muscular. This kid has muscles on his muscles and he knows it. He's always walking around with an attitude and is very rude... So, one day my Dad goes into the gym. Now what you have to know about him is that my Dad wears baggy sweats so you can't see what his body looks like... but he is fit. He works out all the time and (for the most part) eats right. (He is an inspiration to me - I'm trying to get him to do Bfl too). Anyway, this kid goes over and climbs on the bike next to my dad who has just completed his warm up. He's kind of smirking like he's thinking "I'm gonna dust this old guy". So they start pedaling. And my Dad is amazing on the bike. Anyway, the kid keeps looking over to my Dad's bike and is trying so hard to keep up with him. But he can't!!! LOL. He gives up with sweat pouring down his face and my Dad is still pedaling away. The kid walks away in a huff - defeated by someone double his age!!! LOL... I was so proud!!!

I've been so hungry at 2 hours I feel almost ravenous but I have gone 3. It really depends. One thing is if I eat some raw veggies after my meal it seems to help a bit. I can never believe my eyes when I see people write "too much food, I can't eat it". I always think "oh you poor thing" LOL - I WISH that was my problem!

I can usually go 2.5 hours without too much trouble, but at three hours, watch out! I drink coffee in the am so I think that may help suppress my hunger somewhat. And, yes, I drink a s-load of water.

I am sometimes hungry after one hour! I try to drink more water, but if that doesn't help, I just eat early. I find that I'm not really very hungry at night if I eat regularly during the day. My family isn't too happy because I don't feel like making dinner, but I find I cook smaller,more nutritious meals for dinner and then pack one for my lunch the next day. I am hoping I will not be as hungry as soon in the future.

I heard that if you eat food with low glycemic index (ie: whole grains) for carbs, that might help you stay full longer? I'm not an expert though.

I promise you stick with it and this will be the LAST one you will ever be on though this is not a fad diet. It is a way of life. It will change your life! BTW my husband did not really support me during my 3rd attempt at it. He was like your gonna quit. He believed in BFL just not in me. Oooohhhh that kicked into high gear for me. Now it has been about 1 year on BFL and I have other fitness plans in the works! Can I give you a little advice... Believe in yourself first! Who cares what anyone else thinks as you progress and get better they will see the proof that this is no fad diet and that you are serious. You won't be hard to miss because about after 4 weeks on BFL you'll be this giddy happy go lucky person full of positive energy. BTW: We all believe in you! This thread I think validates the points I was trying to make on the guestbook yesterday. The best approach, when you've failed to keep self-promises and others know that, is to just not say anything and get it done! Let your results do the talking for you. It doesn't help to complain about lack of support from others when past behavior shows that you don't support yourself. We all get so danged excited about BFL because we know it's not just another diet, but nobody's going to believe that or believe in us unless we show them rather than tell them how good it really is!

Don't prove it to him that you can do it...prove it to yourself. Surround yourself with people who support you. If that means making new friends, so be it. I have said it before and I'll say it again....having a local support system, meaning not cyber-local but in your town, is a tremendous help in staying truw to BFL, even when you get down, get sick, or get discouraged. Find someone locally who will support you. Is there someone at the gym you are friendly with? That may be a place to start makign new friends who have the same outlook on life.

Well it's day three, my arms r sore, my legs wanna cave in and i feel like i hit atleast 9 during my cardio- FEELS LIKE SWEET SUCCESS to me. You guys have been great. Not having my usual pint of icecream to turn me is allowing me a chance to deal with my problems head on. That is a good thing. I want to attack my emotional eating and I know BFL will help. I just can't believe that i'm eating portioned control meals. I dont know if im hitting the calories but im really trying and by next week i know i will find my groove with the eating thing. Congratulations, you've done an excellent job. I noticed the quads too - well done; abs as well - well done again. Even though your results with this challenge were great, I have a feeling you'll do even better with C2 - exciting. I had to laugh when you mentioned visiting family, then Teresa said it being open season. What is with that? I'm the same way; get in the door, remove coat & shoes, find junk (yes even in someone elses cupboards), eat junk, eat more junk, and more, and more. Sit down and eat junk supper. Finish supper whine, complain, whine, complain - this was a real shitty visit. Vow to never ever go to that house again. Go home, get back on track and repeat. Teresa's right, its open season - like you have to "stock up". Until family is disowned this problem must be conquered on your own. Good luck with C2 Debbie, you should do very well!!!!

I'm training for a 1/2 marathon and triathlong (february, then march) and find that if I have twice as much carbs in the meal before my training, I'm able to get through the training feeling strong, but equally don't feel as though I ate too much - hope that helps you in planning for C2 and your tri training!

O.K. I have a question that has always boggled my mind about HIIT. I understand that your susposed to vary you intensity levels each minute (5-9 and 10), but is your heart rate susposed to vary according to the intensity level? That's what I believe is susposed to happen, but that doesn't work for me and never has. When I go from intensity level 9 to IL 5 theres not way my heart rate drops that much. What I do for cardio is 20 min on the treadmill. I walk the first 2 min at 3.0 and then my interval levels 3.5,4.0,4.5,5.0 and 5.5 for my "10". Then I do a 5 min cooldown. Also I hate doing 4.0 on the treadmill (I don't know why but it's hurts) so I think this week I'll do 2 min of 4.5 and skip 4.0. Then next week if I feel up to the challenge I may do 3.5,4.5,5.0,5.5 and 6.0 for my "10". Let me know if I'm on the right track here! Thanks Melissa

When you are upping your intensity levels from 5-9 on the first "peak" you should notice a progressive increase in heart rate as you are stepping up the difficulty providing you are increasing your machine settings by enough. As for coming back to down to L6 from L9 I wouldn't expect a major drop in heart rate as you are not warming down, you are still working your body hard at L6. Also, I think as the 20m goes on the less chance you'll have of your heart rate dropping as you will have been training intensely for quite a long duration. So I don't think it matters, as long as your are hitting your high points and coming off the machine knowing you couldn't have hit it any harder, then you've done all you need to do. We all know deep down if we've given it 100% all out effort or not.

Thoughts: they're bad. :P Seriously, I think anything that gets people interested in bettering their health is a good thing. I've done a ton of fad diets, and while many of them were useless (and at least one was down right dangerous, *sigh*), I count every one of them as a learning experience that I believe contributes to my success with BFL now. There is generally some grain of truth in most fad diets, and if you pay attention, after a while you can figure out what it is and use it to your advantage, maybe take bits and pieces from each one until.... well, until it looks like BFL, which we all know is the RIGHT way. :D I usually roll my eyes at any fad diet that takes over (for a while I was seeing "Low carb" on every fast food chain's letter board and it was starting to piss me off, lol), but if people are making some attempt to get healthier, that's a good thing. And maybe after doing enough fads, like me, people start to realize that the quick fix ain't it, and they try to figure out what IS it!

Oh don't even get me started on these! My mom would go on and off of this and that diet when I was growing up. Sorry mom but I had to say it but ya did! I don't know if it was from being an athlete or maybe I did have some common sense but I always thought they were just that "CRAP". I never believed in them, never wanted to try them ... oh let me take that back I tried Atkins for 1/2 a day and was like this is so insane and bad for you WTF? Then I tried S. Beach after I had my son well that went well for about 2 days before I went on binge. I knew it just was way to restrictive if you were an active person. Though it is only for 2 weeks for phase 1 it still was to much. Being an ol' athlete I have loved Body-For-LIFE from the first moment I read it 5 years ago. It's exercise & diet program was plain and simple and true! It made complete sense to me when I read it. It had rhyme and reason and was completely sane to do. I liked the fact that it did not suggest that you should have exercise with it. No it told you had to exercise with it!!! Thank god! I think what has bothered me about these "diets" is that they are like a band-aide, or a quick fix for people who need to just overcome a slew of problems such as laziness, food addictions to several items, self esteem issues, & true happiness. these stupid things that people come up with are just a way to sell from print to paper. These people act liek they care and they have the answers but the truth is they only care about how there bank accounts are gonna look in another year. I mean c'mon "How the Rich Get Thin"? Puuullleassse! These books just seem to add to the growing problems and issues! Eventually people who are serious about changing there whole life will stumble up on BFL. Weight loss does not come in a pill, a 30 day solution, or any other get it quick scheme. Weight loss and healthy living is a continual movement and work! Work on control and work on consistency in everything you do. Wheeeewwww I think I will stop there lol I could go on and on and on about this..... Work hard, Workout even HARDER! -T

Less than 20, many of those in the morning, 5 eggs / 1 whole, oatmeal total is about 7. Then shakes during the day total have about 5. The rest of the day is usually tuna, chicken breast, sweat potatos, brown rice, non/low fat cottage cheese and No condiments. I don't know where I had heard this target in the past, it was one of the BFL winners, maybe it's too low!?!

I recently lost about 20 pounds - - unfortunately not the BFL way. I just got incredibly busy at work, and didn't have time to eat. The weight melted off of me. I remember when it first started to happen, I felt amazing. All of my clothes were much too big; I had to buy new ones! I liked how the new clothes fit, and was happy with how I looked. It's been a couple of months now, and I'm still at my reduced weight, but now my mind is playing tricks on me. Now I'm not struting myself in the mirror, thrilled with what I see. I'm back to standing in front of the mirror with the negative examination glasses back on. I'm seeing fat creeping back. I swear my new clothes are tighter than they used to be. I haven't gone up a single pound (I now weigh 125), but I'm back to telling myself I need to lose weight. I had planned on starting BFL on the 2nd because I KNOW that I'd be MUCH happier with the results from the BFL lifestyle, but part of me is terrified to start eating again! I seriously wonder if I have an eating disorder... Thoughts??

Motiv8me, I would not worry about eating the BFL way. If you are just starting to exercise you will notice a change. A POSITIVE CHANGE. The eating part is very, very important. You need to eat as you are now working out and the nutrients are needed to tone and firm the body. DO NOT attempt to follow the exercise program if you are not eating. Your body will crash from exhaustion. Feed your body and watch the transformation take place. Also, take the before picture. We don't see the changes that take place because we see ourselves everyday. Take another picture after 4 weeks and notice the change.

Think of your weight loss, no matter how it happened as a gift! Now, celebrate that gift and try to make it better. Don't lose yourself by eating not at all, but eat controlled portion sizes and excercising. That will take your new found gift and enhance it, Nothing to be afraid of at All! Steve

Sorry to say this, but your fat MAY be creeping back. You can be "skinny fat". I know this because I've been there. I lost a good amount of weight on Weight Watchers (which I still think is a good program but needs to emphasize exercise A LOT more). Loved how I looked, wore a size 6, blah, blah, blah. But slowly the weight crept back on until I was right back where I started. After my first BFL challenge, I had only lost about half the pounds, but I FIT into my size 6s again! I was 10 pounds heavier, but SMALLER than I was before. THAT'S what BFL can do for you...the muscle tone you gain makes that "fat person" mentality disappear. Just my two cents...hope it helps! In the past I have also had trouble eating - for many many many years I would only eat dinner nothing else. This method would not always help me drop pounds, but sometimes it worked. Then I joined a gym and took part in a fitness challenge. I was working out at least 2 hours everyday. I did not lose ANY weight! I called my sister complaining (I had been doing it for about a month) she told me I needed to eat more and referred me to BFL. My first week on BFL I ate more worked out less and lost five pounds. Sounds crazy but true. I followed the program in the months before my wedding and it does work and for the first time in my life I was healthy...I was fit....and I was eating. then I got married went on a honeymoon and slowely started working out less and less until I barely spent any time at the gym. Then I started eating anything I wanted ......slowely I gained 10lbs. Now I am going crazy. Crazy for stopping my healthy habits, and crazy for not appreciating myself back then the way I should have. I was beautiful (something I usually don't feel) I do realize I will not ever be truely satisfied with myself, but I can at least be healthy. Now in my head I vow that I will not complain to my husband that I am fat when I only weigh 1201bs and fit into a size 2. My poor husband.

It is going to take a while for you to get past the mental part of this. I still struggle with this from time to time because the pounds go so much faster! But you can't let yourself stay in that trap! Yes, you felt good with how you looked because the pounds were quickly coming off, but honestly..how did you FEEL? Tired all the time? Forgetful? Dizzy at times? Yes, you do want to do this the right way, and even if the pounds go up a little, you'll be gaining muscle, not fat. Wouldn't you rather have more muscle and less jiggly stuff? A few pounds may be worth it in the long run, as your inches and size will be smaller as a result. If you are a number person (like I am!) it is SO hard to get past that point and look at the big picture. But you CAN do it! And you will feel so much better, and be healthy. Sounds like a great bargain to me! Hang in there! Jennifer

I have a friend who decided to cut way back on her eating... to lose weight. Back in September she started doing BFL with me. Her weight was down 10-15 pounds just from the reduced eating.  But the reduction in calories caused her lean body mass to drop down to 91#.   She is 5'6.5"... that is WAY TOO lean.

By the end of her first challenge, she had gained like 4# of muscle and lost about 5# of fat!! She was frustrated because the scale only showed a 1# difference. The scale is very deceiving when you do it the healthy way as well as the unhealthy way. I think she might be convinced that crash dieting is NOT the way to lose. Usually it leads to lower lean body mass and higher fat mass... a recipe for disaster.

Don't worry about an eating disorder until you see a true pattern. Start thinking about your health and being fit. Doing BFL - it all falls into place.

I was emailing my Dad this morning. I had made a comment about how some days all the fit bodies I see can motivate me and others (more often than not) I leave feeling fat and frumpy. Dad responded with this, and I wanted to share it for anyone who is feeling like me. Hi, you're too hard on yourself, good things take time and patience, plus every body type is different. Be happy with the progress you have made and look at where you’ve come from. Ten weeks ago if I had told you that you would still be committed to the program and have achieved the results you have you would have been happy as a pig in poop. Try not too lose sight of what you are working towards, it isn’t just body, it should be body, mind and spirit. Should you attain the body that you see on others and your emotional outlook doesn’t change you won’t have met your goal. God says we are fearfully and wonderfully made in his image, how we see ourselves is what is important. Like John Candy says “ I like Me “. Love yourself Carrie, the rest will come.

Well, unfortunately I had the stomach flu for a couple of days, so the weight will be down but the rest may not be good. I've missed one workout and may not have the energy for one today, either. I'm SO bummed because I feel like I'm letting my team down. :-(

Forgive me BFL group but I have sinned.... ummmmm yeah so I was walking thru the store and this bag of mega M&M's just jumped in my cart. And then when I tried to throw them out, 10 of them found thier way into my tummy. After I kneeled and asked for pennance I did an extra 20 min cardio and jumped rope. Amen.

  This is BULL's favorite motivational thought of all time...I got it from the BFL Guestbook when I was in my first challenge a year ago... I think John Lesko posted it.  I made a poster of it and it is hanging on my bathroom mirror!!! Use it for your own motivation and keep "CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN!"

So when does the magic happen?

Consider this thought by Fr. Alfred D’Souza:

My score is 1.92.

Your body is closest to a Mesomorph. You have a naturally fit body but to maintain it or improve it you should exercise and diet correctly for your type. Strength training can be done more often and for longer sessions then would be good for an Ectomorph, but you must still be carefull not to overdo it. You should train with moderate to heavy weighs and at a moderate pace, not resting too long between sets. You will find you gain muscle quite easy (some women and even men might not want to get too bulky, but this won't happen suddenly. When you are happy with your muscle size simply train to maintain it). Stick to a good healthy diet to keep you lean and muscular, and watch for any slow creeping fat gains. Engage in and enjoy aerobic activities, sports, etc. but do not overdo.

Congrats on posting your photo. Also a huge congratulations on the quitting smoking. I have been smoke free for one year now 01/06/06. If you need some support on this please do not hesitate to ask me. I know every thing that you are going through. Here is the name of the book that helped me stop smoking. The books name is "The easy way to stop smoking" by Allen Carr. Excellent, humorus reading. Give it a try it will keep you off of them.

I came home from work early to take a nayup.  It's takin' everything I've got not to eat everything in the house....I want comfort food!

I think there's something going around, and I'm BUMMED!! Like others, I haven't gotten sick when doing BFL. But now, I've had a sore throat for the last couple of days. This morning I called into work to say I'd be in late...and headed right to the gym (albeit two hours later than my usual time) before going into work. HEY! It's part of my morning routine, after all. Get lots of rest, don't forget to drink your water, take some Emergen-C, and GET BETTER!!!

I'll behave myself and I'll run around the motel room and daughters house, even bringing my DB's with me. I have all my protien bars and shakes and apples and cottage cheese packed for the drive.

I really had to plan this one out, EXPENSIVE, so I searched and had to find the just right departure times to ensure I was in Orlando in time to take the shuttle over to the Cruise liner  and had to make sure I had enough time to get off the Cruise Liner and to the airport!

I finally found a ticket under $1000, actually only paid $825 but that is with taxes and fees, so not so bad!

I heard it is normal for soreness to be delayed a day or two. Is that right? Cuz I could barely move my legs today to get out of bed. The worst is my inner thighs, since I added abductor/adductor to my LBW. Anyway, I heard too that pineapple is a natural remedy for soreness. Does anyone else know what could be done without supplements to gain a little relief? As an aside, I need to vent about what happened to my husband and why we are still so broke. He finally found a job and they told him to be there at a certain time. He got there and then they said that they received a call and the position is not in their budget. Why would they run an ad, interview 11 people, pay for a physical and a drug test and then say that it's not in their budget? (it was a city position) Also, how can you tell someone they have the job and then when they get there, back out on it!?! He gave up the temp job he had so he could take this position and now he is back to having no job. I am so frustrated, but I doubt complaining to the city would do any good. I go back to school next week so I really don't want to have to get a job. But, it looks like I am going to have to do something. Thanks for listening :)

Hello team 6. Just thought I'd check to see how everyone was doing this week. Last week was pretty tough for me but I promised myself this week would be different... "I will stick to my workouts, eat clean and drink at least 80oz. of water." So far I've kept my promise and I feel sooo much better than I did last week. Doing this challenge has really kept me accountable..it's one thing to let myself down but I can't let my tean down!! So, how have your weeks been going? Welcome Pegs! I'm a former Atkiner's too, and I will never go back! Every time I took a break from it, I would quickly wind up heavier than I started! I find this so much easier to stick to! And Atkins talked about excercise, but didn't stress it very much. BFL made me realize that to get the results I want, I'm going to have to "work" it. I never thought I could keep this up, but am now proudly at my six month mark! Much luck to you beginning your first challenge, I know you can do it! Jennifer

Hey Guys!!!! Thank you so much for responding here!!! Teresa, thank you for writing what you wrote... I have been thinking about it since yesterday night. I think I should focus on body fat percentage instead of weight. I looked on another site a few months back and it said that underweight for my height was 113.5. But I am going to really look into it to make sure I don't go under what healthy is. You know, when I used to look at girls in magazines that I wanted to "look" like... I really misread them. I saw them as "skinny" now I see them as "Fit". A beautiful body has sleek muscle definition. A beautiful body is a healthy, strong body. When I was 118 before, I still had too much fat on my mid section and my thighs... I had no idea that what I was doing was literally EATING my muscle away!!! There are one million experts in the world who all claim to know what they are talking about and are all talking about different things... I am sure that almost everyone here has gotten misinformation on how to change their bodies at one point or another... how I treated myself before wasn't an eating disorder... more like I was following REALLY bad advice I got from someone who didn't know what she was talking about :-( Weak and sick isn't pretty, and that's how I felt... and believe me, I am NEVER going back to that. (thank you so much for caring about a stranger... the world would be so different if everyone would do that - thank you!!!) As soon as I woke up this morning, I read some more of the body for life book. I have read it every day since I got it in the mail. I really believe that this approach is going to be the way I want to live. I already see a slight difference... and I FEEL better about myself now that I am doing something active to change my life. Which brings up another good point that you brought up. I am starting day four today (Enthusiastically!!!!) And I STILL haven't taken a before picture. I started "dieting" before new years... but I don't count anything I did before I started reading bfl. I like the six meals a day thing. I really haven't been hungry since I started doing that. But I will definitely take my before picture today. (Though I am REALLY nervous to be in a bikini in front of a camera... ) And another thing that I got out of this forum... I am a compulsive weigher... what I mean by that is that I like to weigh myself every day... but I didn't weigh myself this morning and I am not going to. You are right that I shouldn't put pressure on the number. I should focus on body fat percentage. But what is a good percent??? I think I am about 20 % right now... I was 19.something last I checked but I lost a little muscle since then. My friend has a body fat analyzer that sends an electrical pulse through your body and gives you a readout of your body fat... so, I will post what I am tomorrow morning. (You can't drink anything before you use it and I already have). Anyway, if anyone knows what the body fat percentage of a 5'5 female with a small frame should be in order to reveal muscle definition in her stomach and very minimal fat around her thighs... I would love to hear it. Miranda, do you know what your body fat percentage was when you were running triathalons? (Which is amazing by the way!!!!! I think I am allergic to comfort food too!!! ;-) lol)If you feel comfortable posting it here, I would love to hear it. If not, maybe you could send me a message to give me a ballpark idea? I'm about 5 foot 1. I'm not sure what my percentage is now, but the last time I checked which must have been last year I was in the Athletic category. I think that was 25% body fat. My fear is that since I'm the only one in my family who is not over weight and not diabetic I needed to change. I could have easily packed on the pounds to 200 but couldn't stand the way i looked I had to change. Once you hit that mentality its hard to go back. HaremGirl2006, remember you have to do what makes you happy for me it's getting back my athletic body. I want to look like the athlete I use to be. I'll get there. I know its easyer to put on weight than it is to take it off. And I'm ready to put in the work. Miranda

Hi HaremGirl, Tcstone gave you some good advice. Concentrate more on the fat percentage rather than the weight. Just remember, the scale is not your friend ;=). Also, I heard those scales that gives you body fat readouts are not as accurate. Are you a member of a gym? Usually, you can ask one one of the trainers to give you a body fat reading using calipers. As for the body fat percentage target, I couldn't really tell you. I think it depends on the person. Check out some of the profiles in the tracker (maybe some of the top 20?) to get a better idea on the look you're aiming for. There may even be some that have similar frame as you. Good luck!

Wow, I didn't know about the top 20 thing... that's great! I guess I am looking at getting to about 13% bodyfat... I know that is going to take a LOT of work. Miranda - I know you can get your athletic body back!!! I guess I have it in my mind to be in the best shape of my life... I was never thin - really chunky as a kid (the glasses and braces didn't help) and of course - teased. Right now, I look better than I looked in highschool and in college - but that isn't saying much. So, I am trying to get the body I never had but always wanted. Just keep visualizing yourself as an athlete again. If you can dream it, you can make it happen!!!! Keep me updated on how you are doing. :-) On a side note: I took my before pictures... eeek!!! I was upset at first, (cried a little) - but then I thought about what I had read on this forum. I have to look forward to my future self. I am not going to look at that picture again until the 6 week mark when I have the next set to compare it to. Next time I look at this picture, I will not be in the same body. My dream body is underneath all of this fat waiting for me to discover it. So, I am excited to keep on the journey. Thanks for your support!!! Keep on the path!!! We can do it!!!

So today is the beginning of my much long awaited transformation! =) I am hoping to loose about 10lbs and tone up some by 2/18/06 .. when my bf and I are off to London and Paris for 2 weeks, where I will meet his mom for the first time.. I really want to look stunning! ;-) So my first day is going something like this- I worked out this morning upper body for about 30 mins, I'm new to weight training, using my bf's equipment, and the BFL book, I ran out of upper body examples, so I'm going to get a weight training for dummies book or something with some good illustrations of what I need to do... My food today is as follows- Breakfast - Grape nuts w/ fat free milk Snack - FF cottage cheese lunch- office is taking us to Ruby Tuesdays, I'll probably hit up the salad bar and order some sort of grilled chicken dish (will list more detail on this later) snack - half a frozen banana dinner - chicken breast roasted with balsamic vinegar, steamed brussels Any adice for my first day? I know I'm lacking supplements, but that also is totally foreign to me... any advice would be so appreciated!

Make sure that you get a portion of protein AND carb at every meal, and at least 2 of those meals, you add a veggie. you snacks need a little more oomph lol good luck!

If you don't have the carb ratio you will not be able to handle the workouts. EAT CARBS! You have no idea how important it is. I am being totally honest you will fail if you do not add in the carbs. Because you will be tired no energy and will get sick working out. Eat brown rice, sweet potato's, red potato's as a card with lots of veggies. Instead of grapenuts you can have 1/2 cup (uncooked) of oatmeal mixed with water. As for exercises and choosing different ones you can find them on the BFL web-site and also another great book to buy with many different exercise in it is Arnold S's Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding. It is a great informative book with pictures and explanations of each exercise. I think over 200 some odd different exercises in there. Good Luck.

Carbs are for energy. Your body can't function with out them, just ask anyone who's tried to do a low carb diet and try to do cario. I mean you have to realize that fruit is a carb healthy whole grains are carbs. Its all about portion size. I'll give you an example I was in Vegas and over heard a women saying she can;t have carbs because she need to loose weight. She said this while eating a fuit salad. I mean carbs have a bad rep. not all carbs are cookies, donuts etc. If you follow the BFL plan you'll be fine. Miranda

Yes, and in actuality fruit is one of the highest sugar carbs there are. Except for apples. Grains as in oatmeal, brown rice, rice are a great source of carbs and sweet potatoes. Those are healthy starchy carbs. Bad carbs: Processed food, Pasta etc.... cake, cookies, blah blah I am getting a headache thinking of them. If you limit your carbs and you exercise you will get sick, dizzy, you might even pass out. You will eventually go oingo boingo and binge. It is the cycle of restricting those carbs. You will not gain in any muscle. You will loose it. Reason being is that when you eat the combo together they compliment each other in digestion. The protein is used for building the muscle the carb helps transport the protein and also instead of having a spike in insulin you even it out while ingesting both. So you never get a high high and a low low. You have an even transport of nutrients into your blood stream. Without causing it to go hay wire. I want to explain more but I have gotta get in the gym. Thanks so so much for the helpful info... and for helping me feel less guilty about adding some more carbs to my diet =) Portion control isnt a problem for me... note my half banana snack... its not because I'm trying to cut back... its cause I seriously cant finish a whole banana. O_O I am just SO completely clueless when it comes to working out... its actually quite embarassing! Thanks for the info on that book T~N~T.. I'll definitely look for that one... I know the BFL site is great, but I'd like something I can keep in the workout room to refer to while working out... kinda hard trying to remember all the animations on the site on my computer in the other room ;-) T~N~T.. your pictures are SO inspiring btw, I was looking at them yesterday. =)

First of all, welcome! I agree with everybody. A portion of carb and a portion of protein for EVERY MEAL and a portion of vegetables for 2 of the meals (typically lunch & dinner). All you need to know is in the BFL book. Good luck!

Just mention to him that there are good carbs and bad carbs...when most people talk about carbs, I think more than a few are talking about bad carbs. However, carbs are the feul your body needs to function. Without them, you WILL feel sluggish! Also, you've got a couple of meals with no protien, so be sure to add that. No protien means no muscle growth, and muscle growth is the means to speed up your natural metabolism and kick it up into high gear! Good luck! Tom

M3: @ restaurant good idea on the g-chix salad careful with the dressing. Or a grilled chicken/rice/steamed veg combo. M4: 1 apple and 1-2 string cheese M5: G-Chix, B-Sprouts and 1/2 c. Brown rice MEAL 6: Whey Protein shake & an apple OR 1/2 c. of Cottage Cheese & 1 apple. I made some adjustments. If you have read through the BFL book it has a list of items you can choose 1 each from for each meal. It is a great thing to have also there is a cook book called Eating For Life it has great ideas for meal plans and even has quite a few menus planned out if you need help putting them together. Hope my meal plan suggestion gives you an idea how your daily meals should look like. You can always eliminate the carb out of the last 2 meals on your final 6 weeks. Or if you just want to.But just starting out so I would keep them in to get you going. Hope this helps you some. ;-) BTW thank you for your kind words. ;-)

Great advice given already, just make sure you are 100% familiar with the basic concepts of the weight training and nutrition plan. It's all there in the BFL book. Read and re-read and it will soon sink in. One thing I will say is that as you train you will inevitably come across other people who will offer you opinions on the "best way" to train and eat, which will often conflict with the information given in BFL. This could be good advice, or it could be bad (in my experience, it's usually terrible). Who knows? My advice is to free your mind of other people's suggestions, stick to the principles of BFL and you WILL get great results. It's been proven to work over and over for hundreds of thousands of people all over the world, and they all ate carbs with every meal. So don't feel guilty, and good luck!

Well, I am new to BFL and I don't know what the guidelines are for warming up before lifting weights. I know that I have always been told that warming up is what I was supposed to do but the book doesn't talk about it. What should I do? Also, I have commited to this 12 weeks and will definitely do it. I sometimes start second guessing myself and wondering if I am actually doing enough. Is this normal or am I the only one? If you are really cold... like working out first thing in the AM, I would suggest a SHORT warm-up on the elliptical or treadmill. Not really enough to get you sweating... this is an anaerobic day! Just enough to get the synovial fluid in the joints flowing! As for "doing enough." If you are eating your meals, drinking your water and hitting your 10's you are doing enough. Careful not to overdo it!!! If you mean, "Am I doing enough to hit my 10s?" That will come with time. You will start to feel when you could have pushed a little harder or when you have pushed too hard. Safety first!! The important thing is that you have made the decision to give it a shot! The rest will fall into place! At least that's how I see it! This forum is also a great place to bounce ideas off of other members! Remember! We're here for you!!

I have been given some "advice" to not eat carbs for my last two meals of the day. The book says that I can have carbs with each meal? Why should I not eat carbs for the last two meals fo the day? Bel

Personally, I don't think I could do that. I need the energy for my morning workout, particularly with the HIIT. I have read suggestions to avoid "white carbs" (potato, bread, rice) for your last meals.

I would strongly recommend doing BFL to a "T" until you get close to your goal weight or at least until you finish one full challenge. The carb advice you are receiving is for getting down to very low body fat % or to increase body fat loss at a plateau.  It is an option, but you would do well to see how BFL (as Bill Phillips describes) does for you for a while.  Do the book JUST AS IS... I promise... it works!

no carbs at night because you're not as active in the evening. You need the carbs during the day to carry you through all your activities. I only have simple carbs my last two meals...leafy greens, fresh green beans, brocolli, etc.

The reason for no carbs for the last 2 meals is because this is when you are most sedentary. It is a way of Tweaking the program. Though it can cause you to become very hungry and put you in a danger zone of bingeing. You have to be prepared if you do something like this you will be hungry. Some it does not bother it depends on the person. My advice stick with BFL the way it was written for now. If you want to experiment with it then do so in 2 week intervals and see if it is something that works for you. T

I agree that you should follow BFL as written for at least 12 weeks, and if it works for you with carbs in the evening, keep doing it. I lost 22 pounds in my first challenge and I ate carbs with every meal.

Believe me TNT knows her stuff! I got great results following BFL and then in challenges following I have been 'tweaking' here and there when I plateau. You will find your results will be great with BFL, cutting anything more out of your life may be too hard on you for a 1st challenge. Choose good clean carbs esp. With last 2 meals: Stay away from pototoes, white rice, white bread. Choose alot of green veg (Beans, Brocoli)and a carb like sweet potatoe,oats, W/M wraps. If anything be super carefull to not exceed evening portions of carbs! Fill up on water, and green veg.

I'm sure Can't Stop Me meant she eats only COMPLEX carbs - the natural and unprocessed foods like broccoli and whole grains - the stuff that slows digestion. Simple carbs are the processed things like white flour, muffins, cupcakes, orange juice. The stuff that is digested very quickly and spikes a rise in your insulin - which is definately what we don't want.

TNT brings up a good point but if you are having fiber foods that will help with the cravings. I think depleting carbs at night can be a good thing but also remember it is about totlal calories

the nutritional value remains the same (as long as no other ingrediants are added...) and they keep longer than fresh. Canned and frozen veggies are perfectly acceptable!

I've become a coffee drinker; well, actually, a no-fat latte drinker! Does anyone have any ideas that are BFL approved as an alternative, but will still give me that kick that I need in the morning, and sometimes throughout the day. I'm even considering supplements to give me a pick-me-up.

Coffee is my stimulant of choice. One cup in the morning to wakeup, and then another 16 ounces of iced coffee about 1/2 hour before a workout. You'll find that most supplements that claim to be fat-burners, metabolism speeder-uppers (lol), etc. are nothing more than stimulants, and often contain caffeiene, in addition to other natural ingrediants that get you cranking. Caffeine is definitely a diuretic, so I make sure I get enough water through the day to counteract it.

You can make an iced protein Latte .I make it with vanilla pro powder then YOu get a DOUBLE whammy ! protein & cafeine! yummmy! It's no Starbucks but it'll do the Job!
