If the inches are dropping but the weight isn't, you could be putting on muscle which weighs more than fat. That's just a guess though, not knowing more about what you are doing or such.
Also, you say you are doing this continuously for 7 days a week, do you mean you aren't taking a free day at all?

Tomcat1066...it was only cause I didn't do anything for a month because of a surgery. I am in week 2 now and I have lost 4 of those pounds so I am getting there.
Like Sylvia said...it's a lesson for all of us. Taking time off does not work. this is...BODY FOR LIFE.

Well, some nice information has been posted since I was last on this thread. Also some very unwelcome sarcasm. Was all of that really necessary? Here is where I am coming from. I have Multiple Sclerosis which I was diagnosed with in 1997. However, if you met me you would never know it. Why? Well, when I agreed to take the medication (shots) that the doctors wanted me to take to help me, I continued to have exacerbations (episodes) and was feeling horrible all of the time. What does this have to do with anything you ask? Well, when I did some reading and educated myself on the dangers of ANYTHING synthetic or man made that we put in our bodies ... including pharmaceutical drugs ... I decided to ditch the doctor's recommendations and live a healthy lifestyle. This included not eating anything artificial, exercising (except during the 25 months that I was either pregnant or recovering from pregnancy) & following a healthy nutrition plan. I no longer have any symptoms of MS and feel/appear to be healthier than anyone I know personally. Of course, in my before picture I looked like death … but that is only because I had just given birth AGAIN 2 months prior to the picture being taken and was embarrassed about the condition my body was in, so I didn’t really want my husband taking that picture!
Does anyone else remember Vioxx being deemed safe and effective by the FDA? Just something to think about. Splenda was approved by the FDA as well.
Once again, I only wanted to raise a red flag for everyone who was interested and let you then make your own decision as to what you put into your body.
Here is another website you can go to for information. http://www.truthaboutsplenda.com/
Also, this site was put up by the American sugar cane and beet farmers so before you go there ... please take a moment to read Dr. Mercola's comments that I have copied and pasted here.
Dr. Mercola's Comment:
Though I am not a fan of sugar (whether from beets, sugar cane or otherwise), if I had to choose between sugar or Splenda (or any other artificial sweetener, for that matter), sugar would win, hands down.
That's why I must applaud the American sugar cane and beet farmers who have aligned their views with my own -- at least when it comes to getting the word out about the potential dangers and misleading advertising of Splenda.
Of course, the sugar farmers surely have their own agenda for spreading this message, but I have none -- other than protecting you and your family from this artificial sweetener that bears more chemical similarity to DDT than it does to sugar.
Splenda's manufacturers have gone to great lengths to suggest that Splenda is natural and safe by using the slogan, "made from sugar so it tastes like sugar." But after the sugar has been treated with chemicals like trityl chloride, acetic anhydride, and thionyl chloride in the presence of dimethylformamide, 4-methylmorpholine, and methyl isobutyl ketone, it is anything but a sugar molecule.
By the end of the chemical processing Splenda goes through, it resembles nothing found in nature. This product is not natural, nor is it a real sugar. It isn't even close.
And, if you haven't yet heard, the long-term safety of Splenda has never been established. In fact:
There have only been six human trials to date
The longest trial lasted three months
At LEAST 15 percent of Splenda is not excreted from your body in a timely manner
In the meantime, since there is a complete absence of any useful long-term human studies, I've been researching effects of Splenda based upon information collected from various individual case studies. The following symptoms have been noticed within a 24-hour period following consumption of Splenda products:
Skin -- Redness, itching, swelling, blistering, weeping, crusting, rash, eruptions, or hives (itchy bumps or welts). This is the most common allergic symptom that people have.
Lungs -- Wheezing, tightness, cough, or shortness of breath.
Head -- Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat; headaches and migraines (severe headaches).
Nose -- Stuffy nose, runny nose (clear, thin discharge), sneezing.
Eyes -- Red (bloodshot), itchy, swollen, or watery.
Stomach -- Bloating, gas, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody diarrhea.
Heart -- Palpitations or fluttering.
Joints -- Joint pains or aches.
Neurological -- Anxiety, dizziness, spaced-out sensation, depression.
In a nutshell, Splenda is simply not as perfectly safe as the manufacturers would have you believe.
If you are still using Splenda, I urge you to take a look through the Web site above, and then check out the pages of testimonials from our own readers who feel they have been harmed by Splenda -- then decide if using this largely experimental product is really worth the risk.
Good luck.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tomcat1066 (139 posts) at 08:13 AM
I still haven't seen a study from anyone who doesn't have something at stake, either a book or keeping their products at the top.
So Splenda isn't natural. Arsenic is natural. Guess which one I'll stick with? Not sarcasm, it's my choice. I don't view Splenda as a threat, and no one who doesn't have something to benefit from saying it IS has said anything.
Until an independent study is done showing me something OTHER than what the current studies show, I won't sweat it.

I'm not too worried about the Splenda thing either. I agree with TNT though - everything in moderation. I don't use very much Splenda, but when I do, I don't freak out about it. Of all the things I am worried about in the world that might kill me, Splenda is ranked pretty low on the list.

Breasts will continue to look better for much longer in life if there is muscle beneath them. Support your breasts ladies! Once you stretch the ligaments supporting the breasts there's no fixing it, short of surgery.
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2248 posts) at 05:43 PM
Mine deflated with loosing bodyfat and I mean deflated. Now I've a bit more chest muscle and it gives more of a slight illusion of "cleavage". Make no mistake, the breast tissue and the muscle tissue are two separate entities; at least mine are. Its not like I've got these perky "breasts" sitting on top of my "muscular chest" they are very separate from one another.
How was that for a detailed explanation? LOL - the only thing missing is touch it right here, feel it? LOL

You'll get lots of other suggestions I'm sure..( that's the joy of Tracker! ) but I'd say that a good protein powder that YOU like is a good place to start..whether it be EAS or not.. hit your local GNC or whatever health store is near you .. they 'll often let you "taste test" ..
beyond that .. it becomes a question of what your goals are.. & how you wanna get there :)
best of luck :)

Bill Phillips sold EAS in 1999 or 2000. Porter Freeman is a spokesperson and a judge but is not in charge of the Body for Life program. The director of BFL is Marc Bennett, who has been around a long time. Bill Phillips got married in Hollywood to the daughter of Marshall Molen, a BFL participant from Starkville Miss, who is associated with Miss. State U. Porter Freeman and Ken Young were invitees to the wedding. Mr. Phillips is coming out with a new program soon, though what it is seems to be a big secret. He was filming episodes for a cable network show last year but nothing has come of it yet. In fact, that is how he met Marshall Molen's daughter. He bought a house in the Golden/Denver area not all that long ago. That pretty much brings you up to date on what I know. Oh, he doesn't post on the tracker or even know about it as far as I know. He used to look at the BFL guestbook years ago but probably doesn't anymore.

Do what you think is best for your family, if there is something that truly offends you, deal with that, then give him more leniency on the other music.
I was totally into heavy metal and speed punk (Anthrax, Metallica, Gorilla Biscuits, etc.) in high school, then alternative (NIN, Pearl Jam, etc.) in college, and I ended up being a born-again Christian!
I'm sure if I went back now and actually listened to the lyrics of the songs I used to listen to, I'd cringe, but I honestly didn't really pay the lyrics much attention back then. I just liked the music, it was a stress reliever for me.

Just don't let him go to a Slipknot concert until he's much older. VERY violent and angry crowd. I am embarrassed to say I used to listen to them back when I wore my 18-hole Doc's and loved kicking people in the head (what WAS I thinking?). Slipknot's concerts tend to be VERY physical.
I wouldn't worry about the music he listens to. My hubbie loves to play lots of ska and punk for our 9 year old. While other 4th graders are running around singing Hilary Duff, ours is singing stuff by NOFX, MXPX, Voodoo Glow Skulls, etc. He's even got his own burned CD with all of his favorites on it. We don't let him listen to music with cussing, though. The worst thing we say around the kids is "Damn". That was hard thing for this sailored-mouth girl to learn!!!

I'm a fellow BFL'er for sometime now. I lurk for sometime then I participate... Lately I've been preoccupied with my sister's health. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in Nov. 2005. She is my "irish twin" and it breaks my heart. She is now in need of a bone marrow transplant and thankfully our older sister is a match. But the medical expenses are mounting and she has to be transferred from Florida to North Carolina next weekend.
So, I'm just asking my BFL buddies to help me in the way that I know you can... contribute a recipe! We are creating a cookbook to sell as a fundraiser (thanks to cfingram for the idea!) and we need recipes. To contribute, you go to www.typensave.com and login.
Contributor: YOU or whoever you want to give credit for the recipe. (you can also add your location here as well)

The deadline for recipes is Feb. 15, 2006 and they should be ready by April. I'll post when I have some if anyone is interested.
I hate pushing this on you guys but you know when you are in a time of need you have to ask your friends and I consider this whole board "friends".

It went into lives of some guys. How they got into it. They were not promoting it. The two stories I did catch both guys quit. One after he won a fight match and then went on to win 2 without steroids. The other guy did it twice, or two rounds and woke up one morning and wanted to kill himself, so he quit.

YES!!! Wendy's chili! Although some people say that the meat in the Chili is "day old" hamburgers, I think Wendy's chili is a great BFL choice. The beef and beans provide good protein and it is mixed in with healthy veggies like tomato, green pepper and onion. Surely, there is some added sodium here... as it is a "soup". Just make sure that is kept in mind. I usually get the chicken sandwich (sans mayo) for a later meal. Gotta watch the calorie and protein intake PER MEAL! I try to aim for about 15-20 g protein per meal!

i agree with t-n-t..use them if you are in a pinch. Ive noticed using them in the past that the sodium content in them caused me to have alot of bloating. I havent even ate one of those yet...i try not to, but i know its not that easy sometimes. Good Luck!

Hello all!
I am completely new to the idea of balancing out proteins/carbs, and for the most part usually try to avoid carbs all together.... but I've also never worked out, and now that I am, I understand its important to have a balance of both.... but I am having a bit of trouble figuring out of I'm getting too much, or too little between one or the other spread across all of my daily meals...
Its my hope that I can post my daily meals here, and gather suggestions and advice from you all until I can get the whole thing down.
Thanks so much...
So let me start with today (1/12/06, day 2 of my BFL btw)..
20 min cardio
breakfast- 1/2 cup of grape nuts, fat free milk, 1 hard boiled egg
meal 2- BFL peanut caramel protein bar (my first time trying one of these)
meal 3 (lunch) - office is having a party, will probably eat off of veggie tray, and meat tray, will have a whole wheat roll if theyre available, also brought some leftover home made chili (beans, lamb, tomatoes, peppers)
meal 4- fat free peach yogurt
meal 5- broiled talapia, brown rice, oven roast tomatoes, bell peppers & portabello mushrooms
meal 6 - EAS Carb control dark chocolate protein drink (had one of these for the first time last night, omg it was good, but I felt SO full when I went to bed I was almost uncomfortable!)
So there you have it, pick away please!! =)
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (746 posts) at 08:47 AM
meal 4, you need to add a protein in there. Perhaps 2 low fat cheese sticks or some egg whites. Cottage cheese, maybe a hand full of soy nuts. Someting with protein.
meal 1-- I am not sure about Grape Nuts and their carb/protein count. You may need to eat a few more egg whites to balance that out. Get rid of the yolk.
Be careful abut the buffett with little options. Best bet is to eat what you brought and take a few veggies and stay away. Meat trays don't usually have the leanest of choices and are full of salt.
Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (36 posts) at 08:58 AM
thanks scstone =)
I'll add a cheesestick with my afternoon snack, I am positive I wont be able to eat 2.. O_O
Why no egg yolk? Too fatty? God I love the yolk, its like the little golden treasure in the middle! =(
Grape Nuts -
per 1/2 cp serving - carbs 47g, fiber 7g
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (19 posts) at 09:38 AM
When it comes to eggs, I would use 1 whole egg and 3 egg whites per meal. Scramble them in the microwave or make an omelette out of them with lo-fat frying spray. it makes a tasty meal and you'll be getting your protein in without overdosing on egg yolks, which you've correctly assumed are a bit too high in fat to be an authorised food.
If it helps here is a sample of my eating plan for D2:
Meal 1: Egg white omelette (as above), small bowl Bran Flakes, skim milk
Meal 2: Tuna/sweetcorn, wholemeal pitta bread
Meal 3: Chicken breast, baked potato, steamed vegetables
Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (36 posts) at 10:09 AM
Thanks so much Ryan =)
Gosh- I am pretty positive I couldnt eat all of that in one day!! I am having enough trouble fitting in that meal 6 after dinner, my body just shuts down, last night when I made myself drink that protein shake I could feel my belly going "wtf?"
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (19 posts) at 10:16 AM
LOL. It does seem like a lot but remember a portion of each of those is roughly the size of your clenched fist or palm of your hand, so your portions will most likely be different in size to mine.
Hitting 6 meals a day can be challenging, bur as you get into the swing of the program you will get used to it. The important thing is that you are eating small, nutritious meals (carbs/protein with each) every 2-3 hours while you are awake.
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (268 posts) at 03:51 PM
I throw in 3 myoplex shakes a day (women should use myoplex lite). You get all of your nutrients and vitamins minerals plus alot of h2o. try and stay away from protein bars, most are high in sugar (glorified candy).

I was just wondering if anyone else has tried this. My husband makes one every week and we have a slice for one of our "meals." I hope this is okay to do even though it falls under the dessert category in the EFL book. I think it is SO cool the way this pie has a lot of protein in it and it taste so good. YUM, YUM...if you haven't tried it you should :0)

Yummy, yummy. I do cook it 10 additional minutes though.
Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (389 posts) at 09:48 PM
I cook it a lot longer too. I also cut it into 10 or 12 portions to match my portion size. I freeze the rest and will usually only eat a peice when I really need a sweet fix, but it rarely is part of my everyday menu. Usually just a treat for me...

NO!!! ketchup is FULL of sugar and it's also high in sodium. Mustard is ok
Body for Life Forum Message by dsw3131 (4 posts) at 01:11 PM
Yes, it's full of sugar and salt, but I think if you use it in moderation it's fine. I used a little on my eggs today because I ran out of salsa. Just season to taste, don't drown your meal in it. Also, consider that it is fat free and is only 10 calories per serving. No, it's not on the authorized food list, but Bill Phillips uses low-fat mayo in alot of his recipes, and that has sugar, more fat and more calories than ketchup. Just use it sparingly and you're fine. Applying a little common sense to this program can only help you.
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (19 posts) at 01:30 PM
For what it's worth I used it sparingly as dsw3131 described on my first BFL challenge and still lost 30lbs of bodyfat, so I think it's a case of all things in moderation, and moderation in all things. As long as you're not drowning your meals in the stuff you'll still do fine.

Ok, ok everyone.... I get the point. It was a stupid question but I'm a by the book kind of girl and just wanted to know. That's all!!!!!!!! Obviously I'm not eating a ton of it. And obviously moderation is always key but like I said I wanted to know if it was authorized.

Hi, i just have a quick question.. my fiance and i are doing a challenge together and we added up how many calories he's been getting each day and it's pretty low... he thinks he should be around 3,000... does that seem kinda high? he is 6'4", 235 lbs, and currently at 20% bf.. he is hoping to get down around 10%.
anyone have any suggestions for me/him?
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1176 posts) at 02:18 PM
Here is a link to help you out on that. BTW 3000 is a bit high if he is wanting to lose. You must create a deficit in daily calorie intake to reduce fat of course with proper cardio/weight training.

I just read the book "Superfoods Rx" by S. Pratt. I've always wondered why certain foods were "authorized" by BFL. Now, I know! Seems blueberries, spinach, and wild salmon are the biggies here. But, all 14 of the foods in this book are authorized in BFL!!
Also, I've always turned up my nose at beans... any kind. After reading this book, I am ready to give them a try.
There are also some really great recipes in the book which are EFL friendly. I'm going to give then a try! There is also a second book out now. I'm going to buy it tomorrow!

The foods on the Authorised list are simply pretty much the "cleanest" source of protein of carbs possible... & have the best nutritional value as well :)

Thanks Urs...that's great to know. I will have to look up some more of my activities of late. For instance today, I have to clear out all 4 bedrooms and the living room (everything except the heavy furniture) for the carpet installation tomorrow. They were supposed to come February 9th, but they called this morning and said they could come either today (yeah, right) or tomorrow. I'm not going to have time to go to the gym today so I will not stress over it today. LIFE is a workout these days!

I've always done them on cardio days. Makes so much sense too - cardio days is only 20 mins, why not make your workouts more like 45 mins EVERY day? JMO
Body for Life Forum Message by Emeril (7 posts) at 02:58 PM
I have read that doing cardio the same day as lifting, especially if you do the lifting first, takes away some of the benefit of lifting. It has to do with the fact that the way the body builds muscle is that when you work out it tears the muscle fibers down and the body repairs them stronger than when they were originally. An aerobic workout creates a different type of stress for the body and doesn't allow all of the resources that would otherwise be allocated for rebuilding the muscles to do their work.
I have also read that you can still have the full benefits of both cardio and lifting in the same day, but you would have to do your cardio in the morning and weights at night.
Don't take this as gospel - just something I read.
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1153 posts) at 03:01 PM
I had a trainer tell me that if you are doing them on the same day it's best if you do cardio for example before work then weights after work.
tHen if you have to do them at the same workout then it's best to do weights first, wait and hour then do cardio.
Lori

Sounds good though Emeril.
I did my UBWO, then a HIIT.
I was VERY tired during my HIIT. VERY. I mean, just right from the start. It was all I could do to muster the energy to keep going. I was wondering what benefit this could really be....but I did it.
I really try hard NOT to cause it took a LARGE chunk of my time.

Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (389 posts) at 10:23 PM
I vote no...
If you let yourself have an out and say, "Oh I am so tired today, I'll just double-up tomorrow" you set yourself up to miss workouts. Who really wants to do two workouts at once?
If you take responsibility and realize you COULD do your workout that day, you simply CHOSE NOT TO and you do not give yourself an "out" of doing it the next day, you are more likely not to let yourself miss a workout. Things come up, I know, but what happens the next day when something else "comes up"?
It just keeps you from getting into the habit of doubling up your workouts, thereby decreasing the efficacy of both...
This is all from personal experience too. Any time I have doubled up to make up for a missed workout, both workouts suffer. When I don't let myself make up a skipped workout, I totally regret it and don't let it happen again.

It was only a matter of time...son having a cold & starting bfl.......
Ive got an awful head cold...I feel ok otherwise, but I have a stuffier than stuffy nose, a little cough and some sneezing. Ive heard that cardio is not good when you have a cold. But Ive also heard that if its not in your chest, you should be ok. I havent missed any workouts, and I really dont want to miss any, but I dont want to make it worse. What do you suggest?
thanks,
Karen
Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2248 posts) at 02:36 AM
I'd go ahead with it even if it was in my chest; depending on how I felt I'd know whether to continue or stop. With the stuffiness and a bit of coughing it may not be as vigorous but I'd be okay with that - better than nothing right?
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (19 posts) at 05:14 AM
As long as it's just a slight cold I'd do the cardio, you will probably find exercise helps unblock your nose and make you feel better. However, if it's one of those heavy flu-like colds I'd probably leave it. Yes, it's a pain to miss workouts/meals in such circumstances, but the best thing to do is just put it behind you and carry on when you feel up to it.

My rule is it's okay, as long as it's not in the chest and you don't have a fever. For me, cardio actually helps clear away any stuffiness.
Just be mindful of what you are able to do that day. Don't overdo it and don't push it if you start to feel sick. And drink plenty of fluids!

OK, I'm at that extremely blissful yet painful stage of being on Week 1 of BFL and having upper body muscle soreness from Monday and the two day soreness from lower body about to kick in i.e. Going up stairs is a major challenge, and as for trying to sit on the toilet...well, I'm sure you all know the feeling ;)
Anyway, it's meant to be upper body again tommorow morning, but I still feel a slight soreness in most areas of my upper body. I just wanted to get some opinions on whether it is OK to train when slightly sore like this? I wouldn't normally consider it, but it will have been a full 5 days since my last UBWO and I don't want to mess up my routine. Or should I shuffle my workout around and do upper body on the weekend instead when I am fully recovered?
Body for Life Forum Message by crazyblonde78 (280 posts) at 03:21 PM
IMO when i am just a little sore, I go for it. Its not worth it to me to throw off my schedule because of a little soreness. It will go away/become less intense the longer you are on your program. Hope this helps, take care :-)

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1153 posts) at 03:24 PM

if you leave it until later you body will never adjust to the stresses of doing it when your scheduled to. So stick to your program, your body will get used to it.
Body for Life Forum Message by Joe (a.k.a. Onyx) (126 posts) at 03:43 PM
Keep working out, even if you use less weight, you need to properly stress your muscles so they can adjust and burn off that latic acid. Drink plenty of water (you should be already) and take some advil it will help with the soreness.

So, today was cardio. Yesterday was LBWO. My legs were so dead and heavy that I only got through 10 minutes. I'm a wimp, I know. But I did admit to Big Bull that I'm Cardi O'Whiner.
Well, I did a bunch of ab work instead so my trip to the gym wasn't a total loss.
My question: does this happen to you on cardio days after LBWO days? If so, what do you do to get through the cardio? BTW, my cardio is treadmill. Perhaps I should have done something else?!?!
Thanks,
Tom
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (19 posts) at 11:23 AM
Yes, it happened to me too, I switched to stepper instead of the treadmill and had a good session, but still felt my sore quads were hindering me a bit. How far into the program are you? If you are only in week 1 like me then I wouldn't worry as the soreness won't be as bad next week or subsequent weeks on the program and you should be able to get through it OK.

Yes, this happens to me too. I try not to run the day after LBWO. I usually do cardio on the stationary bike or the elliptical, or take a spinning class. They're still hard on the legs, but it's easier than running (at least for me since I'm not one of those natural runners).

Body for Life Forum Message by motiv8me (197 posts) at 04:15 PM
Balance on the edge of your stairs with a dumbell in your hand. Do calf raises.
Any others?
Body for Life Forum Message by cookie1135 (1359 posts) at 04:16 PM
Hi LeanKat!
I do all my workouts at home and my favorite for the calves is Standing Calf Raises.
Stand with your feet narrower than shoulder width apart and your toes pointed frontwards. Keep your chest out and midsection firm, do not arch your back.
Beginners do not use weights! If you are more advanced and experienced with using weights you can hold a dumbbell in each hand, with your palms facing your outer thighs.
Now push up onto your big toes so your heels are raised. Squeeze your calf muscles then lower your heels down slowly. Repeat until you have finished your set. Keep your legs straight throughout the whole movement.
This can also be performed with your heels hanging off the edge of a sturdy step. When using this method lower your heels downwards until you feel a slight pull then push your heels up as high as possible squeezing your calf muscles.
I hope this helps!!
Hugs,
Sylvia aka Cookie1135
Body for Life Forum Message by chantal2bfit (44 posts) at 06:28 PM
For a variation on the calf raises, you can also angle your feet inwards or outwards. I usually do this for my last 12 reps of different exercise.
For an added challenge, do one calf at a time with the other leg lifted. Make sure you hold on to a wall for balance with the other hand holding the weight (or no weight). If you're really advanced, you can hold weights on both hands.
You can also do seated calf raises, where you sit on a chair or bench with feet flat on the floor, hold weights on top of your thighs, then raise and lower your heels.

I know today isn't the same day, but oddly, I've been sore after every workout lately! Since I workout in the evenings, my soreness doesn't usually hit me till late afternoon the next day, but I have been sore in my legs, chest, biceps, abs and hammy's. Whoohooo!

Funny..I was extremely sore yesterday. One thing I did with this new challenge, is I lowered weights & have been concentrating on form. Since starting last week I have already increased weight on just about every exercise & twice on two of them. I am feeling a huge difference.

ME ME ME.... Did upper body on Tuesday and yesterday didn't feel so bad so I thought I did't do enough. Did a extra intense HIIT yesterday. Oh my.... My arms are having a delayed reaction, today I cannot straighten my arm without my tri yelling at me and forget picking up my 2 yr old this morning. Now today I am also feelign in my legs from HIIT as I did the elliptical on higher than usual intensity and incline. OUCH.
I have no idea how I am giong to get through LBWO tonight. I think I will def. be in a wheelchair tomrorow.
But like the rest of you...

The Myoplex tends to be thicker then most, however I have read label after label and tried several,I still have not found a meal replacement close to Myoplex in protein or vitamins.

I absolutely love Myoplex Lite shakes!!!!! I buy the power in the in the packets, and blend them in the blender with water and ice. It is like have a think frosty milk shake!! Nothing else compare to the Myoplex with both taste and quality!!!!
Hugs,

I threw up the last time I tried to drink a Myoplex shake. I can handle the RTD shakes in the little box cartons. But I stick with Designer Whey protein and add things like frozen blackberries, raspberries, etc. to up the carb portion.

Put them in a blender and add ice, much better.
Lori
Body for Life Forum Message by scrappinmichelle (29 posts) at 12:25 PM
If you blend on medium for say less than 30 seconds, it won't be as thick. I honestly think Myoplex Lite is the best in the market. I haven't tried them all but a few. What about trying either the BFL bars or Myoplex bars? The BFL bars are delicious! Good luck on your challenge and on finding a more fit shake for you!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (222 posts) at 12:30 PM
PVL Whey Gourmet are my hands-down favorite protein drinks. For me, myoplex can't even touch them. But, they are only whey protein, so they aren't an actual 'meal replacement' the way Myoplex is. So I have mine with a banana or handful of berries or throw a handful of raw oats into the blender and I'm set.

I'd like to put together a BFL meeting for Indiana folks. From checking the profiles, it looks like there are a bunch of us.
Please respond to this post if you live in Indiana and would be interested in getting together once a month to talk, laugh, work out, and share success tips.
I can probably also get my gym to host us for free for an afternoon. That would be AWESOME!
On Monday, I will try to email all Indiana folks that have included their email address in their profile.

You know, i think it would be fun to have a diet competition at work. You could have teams and the winning team would win something that the losing teams has to pay for or something...then again it may cause more stress and hatred between co-workers than there already is.

Daisy, every competitor puts in $20, and the winner takes it all. I think the pot for women is $200.
Jess, I got skeered of the cobbler dance, because I assure you, if cobbler started falling from the sky, I WOULD try to catch it on my tongue. Like snowflakes, only yummy and without acid rain.

motivation must come from within, who cares what your personal reasoning is? just review your goals daily and live the lifestyle the rest will take care of itself. that said , there is nothing like proving the naysayers who preach doomngloom , stagnation and hopelessness that they are wrong. be forwarned they will be envious of your success and try to rob you of joy. Believe in yourself and do not listen to these sore losers.

Go for it Pegs! Your friend may not believe in you but we do! Most of my female coworkers are morbidly obese and I have to laugh at the effort they are making to get me to eat donuts ("oh come on - half a donut won't hurt you!") and popcorn and go to lunch with them. They have actually waddled over to tell me that I can't live on salads (no kidding) and that the way I am eating is not healthy. Honestly I think they are terrified that this might actually work for me and then they might have to acknowledge their own problems. You can bet if they do I will be there to support them!

Body for Life Forum Message by goingforbuff (1559 posts) at 07:02 AM
Your score is 2.
Your body is closest to a Mesomorph. You have a naturally fit body but to maintain it or improve it you should exercise and diet correctly for your type. Strength training can be done more often and for longer sessions then would be good for an Ectomorph, but you must still be carefull not to overdo it. You should train with moderate to heavy weighs and at a moderate pace, not resting too long between sets. You will find you gain muscle quite easy (some women and even men might not want to get too bulky, but this won't happen suddenly. When you are happy with your muscle size simply train to maintain it). Stick to a good healthy diet to keep you lean and muscular, and watch for any slow creeping fat gains. Engage in and enjoy aerobic activities, sports, etc. but do not overdo.

I'm doing much better today than yesterday, that's for sure! Had the shakes almost all day. I still ate clean and did the LBWO yesterday...
Today, Cardio... WoW! I hate running cause I get out of breath so easy, but this morning, toward the end SOMETHING kicked in. The last set I felt the lactic acid build up coming on and I kept pushing the UP button til the end of the 'sprint'. I was hurting (Not Gasping), but still WAY WAY over what I thought I could move my body.

Hey Team 6!
Did my HIIT this morning and added a little cardio. I love cardio, I know that makes me a freak, but what can I say.
I am eating clean, and working out as hard as I can with a shoulder injury. I find out on Monday if it is serious or if it is just muscle bruising. I was hit by a car in a crosswalk in front of Walmart. Long story, but my shoulder has not been the same since. Had a MRI on Tuesday. Get the results on Monday.
But I am concentrating extra hard on eating clean, HIIT and my LBWO, just lifting very light on UBWO and avoiding shoulder exercises for now.
Other people have battled through injury, I can do it too. I will not let this sidetrack me.
Go Team 6!!! Lets kick some butt!!!

I saw my doctor yesterday and she announced that it is now far past time for me to have the hysterectomy that has been kind of inevitable for over a year. I put it off last year while I was working in Japan but now I am "severely anemic" and it can no longer be put off. Due to the anemia she can not do surgery for several months, which works into my BFL schedule for being able to complete my first challenge started 1/2. I am on prescription iron/vitamin pills to build my blood back up. She will also give me a 3 month shot which will put me into a menopause state so that she will be able to do the surgery laparoscopically which will shorten my recovery time in terms of driving, work, etc. but still means I will lose 4-6 weeks of workouts in the spring/summer. She did tell me to continue doing everything I am doing with BFL now.
So I missed my UBWO last night (my appointment was late afternoon and by the time I got out of there and got my prescription filled it was almost 7:30 and I was very tired and disheartened and hungry). I stuck to my diet and decided to just push everything out by a day. Will do UBWO today and cardio tomorrow and LBWO Saturday and then I will be back on track. I will admit that for a minute my thought was "why bother" but I will be able to complete this full challenge and I think the stronger and healthier I am going into this the faster I will recover. I refuse to use it as an excuse and am terribly disappointed in myself for missing the workout last night.
Anyone have any experience with this kind of thing - surgery/iron supplements/etc?
Body for Life Forum Message by bayzhk (6 posts) at 06:05 AM
I totally sympathise with you - whilst I do not have to have surgery, I found out yesterday that I am very hypothyroid and therefore may have considerable difficulty in losing the weight I am trying to lose. I was really disappointed as I am working so hard at this BUT then thought so what?
None of us can control what happens in situations like these but the one really good thing we can control is doind something like BFL... it may take you longer to complete the challenge but whatever you do complete will help your recovery enormously. Plus you will not lose all the work you put in before the operation.
It doesn't matter if you missed a workout and you don't need to beat yourself up over it - just carry on and vow to be in the best shape you can before your surgery and the best shape you can be after your surgery. Your health is so important and I am sure you will feel much better after your anemia and this is all sorted.
Keep your chin up :) I am sure everyone is backing your success all the way.
Body for Life Forum Message by Tri-girl (22 posts) at 01:11 PM
Being on BFL will definitely help you with your recovery time. If your doctor says you can do it now then I say go for it! Don't worry about a missed workout - just look forward.
I know from taking iron pills in the past that you may want to take Metamucil or something to move things along because it can get pretty bad if you are on a high iron dosage.
I have had 3 major surgeries and obviously you will need to work back into your routine slowly after the surgery with the advice of your doctor. It is tempting to try to go back to it right away but it really pays to take it slow.
Debbie
Body for Life Forum Message by nola (52 posts) at 01:21 PM
I say stick with your challenge as well. It can only help with your recovery once you have your surgery, and you can relax while recuperating, knowing you have some great results to be proud of. I became very anemic while I was pregnant with my last 2 -- the metamucil will be important and I also took Dulcolax (a stool softener...there are generic versions available which are way less expensive than the brand name) which the dr said was ok to take daily. Also, I felt great after I'd been on the iron for a while...I didn't realize just how tired I'd been until I wasn't any more, if that makes sense.
Eileen
Body for Life Forum Message by leankat (14 posts) at 03:21 PM
I have had problems with severe anemia in the past as well. Fortunately, I did not require a hysterectomy, but every other female in my family has had one and they all feel so much better now.
If they can do one without an abdominal incision, your recovery time will be much less.
If you want, you can email me directly, I work with GYN Cancer and Breast Cancer patients at a University Medical Center and would be happy to answer some questions if I can.

I need some feedback from you wonderful people here!
I finished my first challenge around Christmas and started my second one on Jan 2nd. My problem is this;
My weight has stays around the 230 mark, right now I am 227lbs but it goes back up to 230 and then back down to 227. I can't seem to get past 227lbs and I getting frustrated! Yes I can see a huge difference in my body comp and my clothes don't fit anymore but I can't seem to lose any more weight! I do cardio first thing in the morning 4 days a week and one night a week I do a circuit training class for men. I also weight train three days a week at night. I know that muscle weighs more than fat but shouldn’t I be losing weight also? I am eating healthy, but I might not get 6 meals in everyday but I keep it close to that. Anyone have any suggestions?
Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Head (33 posts) at 08:06 AM
Weight schmeight.
Look at it like this....
You're starting this challenge 230 at 17% bodyfat ....
let's say in 12 weeks, you lose 7% bodyfat, yet you're weight stays right at 230 ....
If that happens , then you have found the perfect exercise and nutrition balance for losing fat and gaining muscle, lost all kinds of inches in the places you store fat, ..... and the rest of us would hate you for that. :)
Don't sweat the weight.
Scales are for fishes !
Body for Life Forum Message by Dana D (552 posts) at 08:12 AM
I agree w/Muscle....dont sweat the weight, as long as your bodyfat is dropping and your getting healthier, focus on that.
Right now I weigh 218 and am wearing a size 14 (Im 5'11"). Last time I was "this small" I wieghed 190....my body comp has changed and I have more muscle now, which is WAY more important to me than the scale.
Body for Life Forum Message by NormRebs (272 posts) at 08:50 AM
I know what your saying and I can't say that I disagree but I really wanted to get down to 200lbs. I guess I'll have to look at it in a different way! Thanks for your response!
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (746 posts) at 09:05 AM
Norm....I understand you.
I think there is great advice here. You are making great changes, you can see it in your pictures.
I say just keep trucking along doing what you are doing, as you build more muscle and lean out more, I am sure you will see some scale change.
You are a tall man and with building muscle, I am not sure that your goal of getting under 200 pounds is reasonable (with muscle).
You look great. Keep it up!

Body for Life Forum Message by amodellawyer (36 posts) at 09:37 AM
When I first started my challenge it was my goal to get down to 200 pounds as well. However, as I went along and realized how my body was changing weight didn't matter anymore (especially since my weight was goign up rather than down). Just think about all that extra calorie burning lean muscle you've put on. That will do you much better than weight loss in the long run.

Due to popular demand (well, maybe not so popular) I reposted some of my progress pictures. Unfortunately I lost my camera right before week 12 so I have no "final" pics. I found a cheap web camera to take my pictures for the beginning challenge 2 (the week 1 photo actually pertains to week 1 of the mini challenge). I did continue the program over the two weeks between the end of challenge one and the mini challenge, but my eatign was not the best. So while I'm tracking my stats continuously the week #s refer to the mini challenge. Go team 2!

So since I am in my 6th week of challenge 3 (2 unsuccessful one before:( ), I would like to see some progress of the day to day activities that help keep me motivated.
Yesterday and today I noticed my first two:
1) My waistband felt looser
2) I had to pull the belt in another notch.
Try and find these little nuggets in your challenge and great them as small milstones to keep you going.

Is this a yes or no food on our program?
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (19 posts) at 10:18 AM
Yes, 1 piece of fruit = 1 portion of carbohydrates on BFL. Don't forget to eat a protein source with it though.
Body for Life Forum Message by Wrecky (246 posts) at 10:20 AM
cool...having one with a protein shake! Thanks!

I thought they weren't on the approved food list because they are higher in sugar than most fruits.
Body for Life Forum Message by Can'tStopMe (518 posts) at 04:39 PM
bananas have the highest sugar levels when they are ripe. I use them when there is still some green on the skin.

POO!
Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (389 posts) at 04:42 PM
Technically, banana's are not listed on the food page in the original book, but they are listed in Eating for life.
Personally, I'd be really hesitant about adding them to your shakes. Unless you have a carb-sense shake, the shakes are usually a complete meal. So if you are a woman trying to lose weight, you are adding a banana, that's an extra 120 kcal in your shake, plus an extra 35 g. carbs. (if you really need to improve the taste, add lots of ice, or try different extract flavorings.)
Other fruits such as apples, peaches, berries are lower in calories and do not have the same impact on blood sugar that bananas do. An apple will run you about 75 calories, 20 g. carbs, 4 g. fiber. Compared to the banana, it is usually the better choice.
Do I think a banan will ruin anyone's progress? No, not if it is an occasional thing. Especially if that person would normally reach for chocolate cake, whereas that banana satisifies that sweet craving instead. (Bananas have been called nature's dessert!)
Alas, this is a debate that will rage on and on in BFL land...
Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (245 posts) at 04:50 PM
One banana, mostly sugar, to one shake, once per day, for a year, will result in approximately 36,500 extra calories a year, essentially creating a lost opportunity to lose 10 pounds! Does that help? Bananas are waaaay overrated as good food. So are bagels. So is peanut butter. Stick with the shakes, and with good carbs and proteins and leave the sugary tropical fruits and fats to free day!
Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (389 posts) at 04:58 PM
I totally agree about the peanut butter, too. Adding it to a shake is an extra 200 calories, when you can't really taste it!
(I'll have to remember those banana numbers...I'm sure this will come up inother conversations!)
Body for Life Forum Message by crazyblonde78 (280 posts) at 08:21 PM
If I have just a protein shake (not myoplex or similar) i add a 1/2 banana. It gives it flavor, texture and the right amount of carbs i need. Just MO. Good Luck!

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (94 posts) at 08:44 PM
It would be okay with a protein shake, like Wrecky was looking for. Not with a Myoplex.

On last year's cruise we had BFL Champs & Challengers travel from around the world to participate in the the 1st annual BFL Cruise. From as far as Japan, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, etc...
But one man from Ireland (Paul McMahon) was a freelance bodyguard for American & British diplomates visitng Iraq. Two Novembers ago this Irish Body Guard was was taking a group of diplomats from Bahgdad to the airport when a suicide bomber ran their car into the center of the caravan killing several & critically injuring Paul, breaking his 2 hips, legs, knees and severe back injuries. After numerous surgeries, month of rehab, wheel chairs, crutches & canes to assist him walking. Because of having success in prior years with BFL. He started the program again to be his own personal rehab program.
Before last year's cruise, many of us met the day before in Miami for a meet & greet. And that is where we all met this hero from Ireland for the 1st time. He became an inspiration to everyone on the ship. The last day of the cruise, we had him close the event with a speach that drew a standing ovation!
With all that being said. Lastnight during dinner Paul called with so much enthusiasm in his voice to tell me he & his wife Nieve have been named...
Ireland's 2005 BFL Champions!!!
I just wanted to make sure everyone would congratulate our Newest Champion! Paul is a true champions so please Make sure to search for his profile here on Tracker & drop Paul a PM or email.
His tracker name is "Gloom Raider"
As for the the $1,000,000.00 BFL Champion to be announced this Saturday night at the Expo. I just spoke on the phone with BFL Managaer Marc Bennett. So I can post it for our cyber BFLers the second it is anounced, we are working on a wireless connection for my laptop...If not...I plan to call or text message one of you via cell phone or text message so you can post it for us.
Until Then,

I'm sure all of us are familiar with GNC. Over the past 6 months I have been stocking up getting ready to start my challenge.(Actually tried to start it several times before Jan 1, but things just kept getting in the way.) At the beginning of each month I would go to my local GNC and see what they had on the shelf. If I was out of town I would go to the GNC in that town and check them out. As the experation date approaches on items they really mark the prices down.
Creatine Burst (8lb jug): Reg. $80 Paid $1.50 (bought every jug they had. 7 jugs total). Got $560 in supplements for $8.
4 pack protein/meal replaceent drinks (Myoplex & Nitrotech): Reg: $8-$10 Paid $1 (bought every pack they had. 5 packs total) Got $40-$50 in supplements for $4.75.
Protein bars (Myoplex, Pure Protein, Detour): Reg $2.50 each Paid $.25 each. (bought every one they had. a total of 83 bars) Got $207.50 in supplements for $16.60
The best I can figure, I have managed to get $817.50 in supplements for $29.35 total.
Gold Card Members(which is free to get) get an additional 20% the total purchases between the 1st and 7th each month, which is usually when they put the items on mark-down around here.
A ton a supplements can be bought for very little money. Although, some months they have no items on sale.
Did not know how many of you knew this took place each month. I sure didn't until I stumbled across it by accident. Hope it helps someone.

I am a big GNC shopper and always look for the "expiring items." I get great deals too but sometimes buy stuff I don't need, just cause it's cheap! Just wanted to add that the Gold Card isn't free, it costs $15 a year but my first purchase alone saved enough to pay the $15 and give me $9 off.
Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (1010 posts) at 11:15 AM
Craig,
At least where I live, the Gold Club membership is NOT free. When I signed up last year it was $30 and I just renewed it last week for another $10.
The stores in my area are all advertising 'Biggest Sale Ever', and I go in and the prices are still double what I'd pay online through dpsnutrition.
I think you are really lucky to have GNC stores near you with such good deals. Not the case for me. :( Waaaaaaa!
Danielle
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (746 posts) at 11:47 AM
Yes, I shop GNC sales too, but something with their nearly expired Myoplex RTD's I won't do.
I bought about 10 packs a few months back because they were only $2.50 a piece. I thought I was getting such a great deal. The first one I carried with me to work, forgot a cold pack. When I opened it and took a drink, I could barely get it down. I attempted to pour it out, but it was so thick it wouldn't actually pour. I cut the container open and it was the consistency of rotten milk.
I took all of them back to GNC and was told they pitch them if there is a complaint, so I had her open one from each of the 9 other packages....they were ALL like this.
GROSS. it was the strawberry flavor, which I have had before. And the expiration was a few months out at the time.
10 containers and they were all bad? Seems too many to be a bad batch, but who knows.
I prefer to make my own anyway, but please be careful with the RTD's and the expiration dates.
Teresa
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (746 posts) at 11:48 AM
BTW....I thought the one I brought to work was because I didn't have it iced, but they don't sell them iced and the others never went in the fridge. Had nothing to do with the coldness.
They were just BAD!

Then again, I do live in the South and we aren't the brightest birds in the nest sometimes. If they are not charging me for the card each year, I think I'm going to tell them I am Bill Phillips and used to own EAS and I have come to get all my EAS stuff off the shelf. Reward yourself! Go buy something for your success (even if it's something small) and everytime you look at it in your life, there will be a meaning behind it! You deserve it for your beginning transformation! How Cool. I am a rock collector...when a significant event happens in our life, my family (kids) will bring me a pretty rock. My son picked up a rock and said "here mom, add this to your collection"...I said, what's the special event? He responded in his adult 9 year old tone "Cause we went shopping together" - that is my favorite rock! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by Mikmindz (68 posts) at 02:27 PM
I started the BFL lifestyle last July. I was a wreck. I had never felt so poorly about myself and how I looked, confidence, everything. I read BFL and started the next day. The transformation that hit me was profound. I weighed 318 lbs and had a bf of 30.1% The very next morning, I woke up and felt like a weight had been lifted from me. I was happier than I had been in years. I had a plan. I had goals. I had purpose. Like many others here, my life changed. My marriage was better(my wife supported my efforts fully) my outlook on things was tremendous. In short, I felt great. And I felt great every day. I worked the program for ten weeks and dropped to 288 lbs and 23% body fat. I fit into clothes that I haven't fit into in years. Life was great.
Then in week 11. Just a mere two weeks from completing my self promise. I stopped. Gradually. Didn't eat clan for the first time in 2 months, worked out less, rationalized that it was just a blip and I would hit my last week hard and then fire up challenge two. It didn't happen. In fact, I stopped everything.
I don't know why this happened. I have no excuses. I will not rationalize it. I just quit. I had everything going for me and I just quit. And then I began the destruction of everything that I worked for. I now weigh 330 lbs and have not idea what my body fat is.
This is hard to write. Hard to face the facts that I have so completely failed. But I need to do this. I need to recapture what I had for ten weeks. I need to face it, forgive myself and get started on the right path again.
I found this site in my first week on the BFL and I cannot tell you how much help you all gave me in answering questions and providing support. I looked at the success stories and saw the struggles and thought that I would never get to this point.
So here is my plan and I welcome all suggestions.
1. Forgive myself my faults and mistakes.
2. Re-read BFL.
3. Make the promise to complete the 12 weeks and live the BFL lifestyle beyond those dates.
4. Re-enter this community and tell my story. Update my profile and this time enter my photos. Last time I just took the photos and did not load them.
5. Start immediately.....
I know I am not the first person to go through this. But I can tell you how hard it is....Thank you for allowing me to tell my story. I would also like to apologize to my team members in the mini-challenge I was participating in October for letting them down.
Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (1010 posts) at 02:31 PM

Hey, we all go through this. I was 30 pounds lighter than I am now after my first challenge, but life happens. Things happen. Keep the past in the past! You are whomever you choose to be on any given day. If you feel you are a failure, then you will be. But if you feel that you are someone capable and deserving of change and good things, these things will come to you. I have faith that in 12 weeks you will be proud of what you have accomplished. Come here often to saturate your mind with all the positive energy that is here on this site!

If you mess up, you mess up. Move on and don't look back.. Learn from it. If it is a bad, chalk it up to a bad week and move on to the next. Don't restart the Challenge. Just tell yourself to do another challenge and one that you will do better at. Eventually you will complete a challenge without any problems at all. Wellcome back. Yoru plan sounds good. Stick to it one meal at a time, and before you know it, one day is gone, and then another, and then a full week, and then another week. Again, if you mess a meal up, so what? Eat right the next meal. Keep moving forward.

We are human beings, we make mistakes, we rationalize our mistakes, we learn of our mistakes.....THIS IS LIFE.
I don't want to tell how many times a tried BFL and other programs, and as usual....stopped after some days or weeks.
This is what you should do right now:
1. sit down and write down all the causes or circumstances that made you stop.
2. Try to find a solution for every one of them.
3. You should know in advance that you will face one million challenge on your way to finish the 12 weeks....ignore them, and laugh when you face them.
I'm trying this now and it works, and I hope I'll be winner, or I should say, I will be a winner.

Don't beat yourself up Mik. We have all been there. Most people who are successful in life have failed a lot before they succeeded. The difference between those who achieve their goals and those who don't is that those who acheive their goals didn't let the setbacks and failures stand in the way of their success.
It took me 3 challenges before I actually completed one. It was a long time coming, but the feeling was worth it. But you have to be ready mentally. You have to want it, but you also have to be able to 'live'. Thant's why it's called Body for LIFE. It has to work for you. If you have a bad day, let it go and promise yourself that you won't let one bad day become two, or 10, or 30.
Also, MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR FREE DAY! It is so important mentally. It's the days following a "skipped" free day that cause me the most trouble. When I skip the free day I am more likely to skip a workout or binge eat.
Stay Strong my friend...you can do it!

Honestly, i always felt that the 12 week time line had this exact downfall. That is being hyped for 12 weeks and then falling off afterwards. I def would forgive myself(I had to allready) Also i suggest setting a longer goal then 12 weeks, or even setting a pre determined amount of challenges. This might keep you on track more. I know my new date is july 15th. Thats like two challenges but that is an important date so im shooting for it. Good luck

You know can I share a little of my story with you. My first BFL challenge I was 26-27 yrs old. No kids just married. My Husband introduced it to me. We had both gained some weight (more so I) from being in-love blah blah. So started doing BFL I was into my week 8 and I was getting stopped in clubs & on the street about my appearance. Women were like omg you look fabulous. Your muscles omg... blah blah. For some reason I guess I was just being young and dumb and got full of myself and thought oh well I am looking so good my job is done right? WRONG I couldn't have more wrong in my life.
A few moths after that I had a slew of things happen to me physically, car accidents, then I became pregnant, another car accident, the list goes on and on. And you know what kept going through my mind? Why didn't I finish my BFL? I even attempted another challenge after my son was born failed miserably. I will never know what the finished product would have looked like from the first time and we never will.
So I started again much like you have around this same time last year. And guess what I have been at it for a year!!! You know why? Because I had the what could have been gnawing at me and pushing me. Esp. the knowing I can too. I had a taste of what this wonderful life-style could do for me and I never wanted to loose that taste again. So use your past attempts to fuel that fire! I believe this will be the one challenge that changes you for life! I know 3rd time was a charm for me. I am even pursuing other fitness goals and dreams I would have never even imagined because I know what it is like not to achieve a goal because of slacking off. It was the best thing I have ever been taught. I now want to finish everything I set my mind too. And you will too! Just stay strong and BELIEVE! Take care!
P.S. Welcome back and welcome to the tracker!

you haven't failed! we always tell smokers never to stop quitting, and that's what I'm telling you - don't stop trying! You've recognised your faults, and now you're trying again.Good for you...in fact GREAT for you. Stop beating yourself up and start working towards your goals.
You'll get there, I promise!
Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (47 posts) at 04:18 PM
Welcome back! You WILL stick to it this time! I too have had the ups and downs. I have lost 80 lbs twice already in my life and now I have to do it again. It's sickening to me, but a great motivator to not let it happen again. We learn and improve ourselves. That's all we can do, right?
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (19 posts) at 04:33 PM
Don't be too hard on yourself, I've been there too. Adversity or just life in general can get in the way a lot of the time.
I've tried to restart BFL several times over the last 2 years, and it always seemed to trail off after the first week or two. I think that unless you're mentally ready and really make that decision to change, I don't think you can stick to BFL...For me that is the key to it. A half-hearted effort isn't good enough. At least not for me. For it to work I know I have to plan every meal, every workout, because otherwise I will slip back to old habits..."I'm too tired to go to the gym tonight, I'll go tommorow", "I'll have that pizza now and eat healthy the rest of the week" etc. But guess what? I didn't find myself going to the gym at all, or eating healthy. I couldn't keep my promises to myself because I guess deep down I wasn't taking them seriously.
So don't feel bad. The exciting thing you should find about starting a new challenge having done one before is that you already have the knowledge. You know first-hand that the program works and don't have to make the "leap of faith" most new BFLers have to.
So good luck! I am only in W1 myself but already feel motivated and inspired by the people on this board, and know that this is the one that is going to get me in the best shape of my life.

You know what, Mike? I actually completely disagree with all of those who said, "don't beat yourself up....." You did exactly the right thing! Unless and until you own up to the bad things, there is no self-forgiveness, and you won't move forward. I've got to tell you, I really ADMIRE what you said, and the courage with which you said it. Yours is the kind of story that will have a happy ending, not because of a bunch of phoney enthusiasm and rah rah stuff, but because you have some guts, some insight, and some real determination. Good for you!

I'm glad you decided to come back. The fact that you are here, starting over again, makes you anything but a failure. You're still working at it, and you will get there. We've all had slips, some bigger than others, but we've all had them and we all have the opportunity to learn from them and keep moving forward.
Keep us posted on your progress and how we can help you keep going!

I've completed 1 C sucessfully and failed at 3 others. I'm halfway through my second that is the most successful I've been in a year. here's whats worked:
1) Set goals
2) take photos
3) Journal. Print your pages, get them bound at kinkos for $5, plan you food and workouts, record them.
4) Work out at the SAME time every day. Don't make it fancy. Find what time you are willing and able, and do it at that time every single day.

Welcome back...try not to "recapture" what you once had because that is almost impossible...make this challenge new...even better...let go of the past...
The important thing is you have learned from your mistakes...they are what they are...and this challenge will be stronger because of them!
You can't move forward if you keep looking back...
Congrats to you for making it happen!!!

i like what mike said. While I think enthusiasm certainly has its place, and I don't think its smart to "beat yourself up", it is very important to recognize where you dropped off and how. Like I said, I know I dropped off because I wasn't staying accountable. I wasn't a loser, I wasn't a failure, I just wasn't making myself accountable. Keeping my journal close, knowing my weaknesses (don't ever wait until after work to work out at don't keep any food that resembles cheat food in the house) has made me successful.
The benefit of mistakes is taht we recognize them for what they are. You aren't a failure, but you made some mistakes. Determine what they were and then figure out a way to deal with them.

whats even more interesting:
There is a survey on the page...
Do you find fat people less attractive?
Answer yes or no.
After voting it will show you the results:
81% said Yes
19% said No
Of the percentages who voted yes, I'm wondering how many were actually overweight themselves.

That's a joke. People are not more accepting of "Larger body types" there are just more people that are overweight.
So...basically, more and more people are becoming overweight and obese, increasing the chances of a multitude of weight-related health risks, and this is a GOOD thing??!?!?
I am so glad I left broadcast. What a joke. Though apparently, according to the article, my career as a future registered dietitan may be in jeopardy if we all accept obesity as "in", health risks notwithstanding.
Still, my favorite part was the lady from the Fat Acceptance association who wouldn't use the word "overweight" because it was too judgemental, and instead used the word "fatties". Yeah, that's totally sensitive.

Body for Life Forum Message by Robin78745 (32 posts) at 05:02 PM
I've screwed up mid week, but ...I still take my freeday because otherwise I feel deprived for a whole week and a half, and then I'm sure to binge. Just move on. Part of bad eating is beating oneself up for eating! Then we eat to cope. Just stop the cycle.
My personal tactic for dealing with free food is either a) buy it, eat and finish it on my free day or b) (more often) go out to dinner. Then there is no temptation at home or at the store.
Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (1176 posts) at 07:17 PM
Ok please don't get mad at me for doing this. But it is just something to point out why it is important that you probably not take a free day on Sunday and you wait until it has been a substantial amount of time before you do (7 days). The reason I am pointing this out is that it has helped me because I am not gonna lie in December I made yup 2 batches of cookies! And ate them within a few days. It happens. And other countless binges. But if you realize what you ate numerically it might not look so good to you next time. I could say oh it's ok and to move on. Well yes you need to move on but you need to gain some knowledge of what things like this will do for your progress. I am learning this useful tool as well to keep me from giving into temptation. Calorie counting. Yes that even means counting the calories of bad food that you eat. It is a real eye opener.
Krispy Kreme Donuts (reg glazed) 200 cal. other types go up to 320 cal per donut.
McDonalds Cheeseburger: 295 cal.
Mc D's Fries: Lg 400 cal. I am guessing small would be 200 cal.
So you add up what you have eaten and you will see why it is important for you to go ahead and skip your free day if it is coming up because you have already taken it. Just get back on track keep moving forward. If you feel it is gonna make it worse skipping your free day then have a small treat nothing earth shattering to pacify you for the week. It is important to know these things. I used to ignore the calories when I binged and cheated. As I became more knowledgeable I really tried to ignore them because I wanted to ignore the fact of what I had done. Now I pay attention because it is a useful too. So now you know exactly what you ate and how many calories are in them you can make an educated decision is this really what I want to do? Do I really want to eat my whole days worth of calories in a few empty calorie products. Is it really worth it.
So yes my advice is to move on. No not all is lost. And my question is have you learned something from this (unplanned free day)? And no this won't be the last time you do this. We ALL have done it numerous times. It's part of life. Lord knows I am as guilty as sin but I try to learn something from each time I do it to help be stronger for the next time. Take care! And good luck to you. And enjoy your free day today. And have a GREAT workout tomorrow!
Please don't hate me for this post. I am just saying this because I want to help you succeed. ;-)

Personally, I make the cheat day my free day. I don't even plan my free day for the same day each week. I look at my schedule and decide. If I cheat early, well, free day is done, and I don't even have to feel sad or guilty because I GET A FREE DAY!! WOO-HOO! No harm, no foul. That being said, others say they chalk it up as a mistake and still take the planned free day. That doesn't work for me, but if it works for you, have at it. This is your LIFE, not your DIEt.

You are not the first nor will you be the last to suffer from the siren-like calls of Krisy Kreme! Personally, I don’t eat them… I melt them, suck them into a syringe and inject them right into my veins! Krispy Kreme… IV push… STAT!!
Forgive yourself is the key. Also, don’t let one ‘bad’ day lead into a second ‘bad’ day. For if you permit this to happen, in a few days you’ll find that you suffered a ‘bad’ week.
I also would delay my free day for at least a week. Not because of the impact on my body but more as a mind game to show those pesky Krispy Kremes that their power over me was only temporary.

Grrr...Not as good as I hoped, but that's not my fault for-reals. Stoopid gym only has ONE SET of 10 lb. dumbbells, and it's always missing, and since I can only lift the 12's, like, twice, I had to use the 8's, which just wasn't heavy enough. I complained at the desk when I left, and the doofus back there said, "There are two or three sets of 10's in there." Okay, moron--who was just in there, me? Or you? Anyway, that was un-great. But what WAS great was that I was able to run a full 1.5 miles today, which I haven't been able to do yet after taking so much time off. So WOO-HOO on that. Before long, I'll be back on track running-wise. Get it? Track? I kill me . . .

Yup, I am! I am tried and worn out, but I have one more day until I get to rest. I was so out of it after my leg workout that I knew I gave it my best today. I did not let myself slack on little bit not at all this week. Esp when I was not feeling like going to the gym yesterday. I am happy tomorrow is Friday just one more day before I can have some rest.
I guess what I am asking is have you pushed it to the limit? Have you given your all? Or are you just going through the motions? Feeling comfortable in your workouts? Maintaining, sailing by? Or are your challenging yourself to your personal best? Making a difference to change your body? Change your life?
I was faced with some interesting questions lately about my workout routine that were geared for my goals. I have since learned that if I truly want this certain body type.... and I mean really want it ...... I am going to have change my ways. Change my thinking. I am going to have to enjoy the process. I challenge you guys to move out of your comfort zone. If you could complete those last 6 reps without a struggle then you have accomplished it move on to the next weight. Don't find yourself being comfortable. Make it comfortable to be challenged to your utmost potential every time you hit that gym. I promise the satisfaction is well worth it and you will never get bored.
Live it! Be it!

P.S. and yes I will be back in the gym @ 10 am tomorrow to have another round of this! ;-)

My butt hurts today...what a great feeling. I know I had a great workout when my butt or my triceps hurt!! When I came home this evening I felt like making a lean cuisine pannini (sp?) sandwich that I bought for free day. I was so tempted to just forget about the clean eating thing. However, I regrouped by going to my desk and re-reading my goals and looking on this web site for motivation. So I had a small sirlion steak with veggies and 1/2 sweet potato and am not feeling the guilt and sense of failure that I would have had I given in to that impulse! By george I think I've got it!
Thanks for your encouragement!

I never buy my free day food until my free day just to be safe. Not that I don't trust myself or anything, but if they're in the cupboard you never know what may happen on those long winter evenings :) The less temptation the better I find. Well done pk-rn on resisting though :)
There's a funny story by Bill Phillips in EFL about an occasion when he missed a flight and found himself raiding a hotel mini-bar on an unplanned food binge because they hadn't emptied it as requested. Shows he's just as human as the rest of us!

TNT........I love your attitude! I feel very much the same, but it is a GOOD HURT. I have thrown in some extra workouts with Pilates and Beach Body "Ramp it Up" and it has really pushed me. Today I went into the weightroom with the goal of being INTENSE and it was hard, but I pushed through the pain often working to exhaustion!
I threw in my BODY OF WORK video and the accomplishments of that first group is just INCREDIBLE! I want to push my body to those same limits and I know I am close, but I have to, as Bill say, give and EXTRAORDINARY EFFORT if I want EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS!
I know I want it this time around and, like you, I am fixed and focused on that goal!

Well what did I miss with the last photo???? Kerry looks absolutely great!!!! How did he get so much better looking from week 12 to week 1???? Was I not paying attention? If nobody else noticed, take another look; lets start paying attention here!!!
And one more thing, lets get Kerry the hell out of 7th place in the top 20; HE DESERVES MUCH BETTER THAN THAT!!!!

I have been on the program for almost a full 5 weeks. Week five ends saturday. So I lost 9 pounds the first week and 2 pound the third week. Nothing since then. I am following the program, eating pretty right, drinking enough water, and exercising. I took my 4 week pictures on monday and I can see a slight difference. I feel great. I am enjoying my exercises. I am so dedicated I went snow shoing at -4 below this afternoon. I am hoping for some feed back from someone that has had a similar experience. Thanks for all the support in advance
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (94 posts) at 07:31 PM
I didn't lose the amount you did to start, but in my first challenge, I lost a teeny bit every other week, and then hit a standstill at weeks 4 and 5. I got mad and pissy and yelled curse words at my scale, and everyone on Tracker told me it was the "Four-Week Freakout." I didn't believe them because I didn't freak until week five. Then, in weeks 6 and 7, I just MELTED. I couldn't believe what happened in those two weeks. Hang in there, and keep doing good work, and you'll be amazed!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (4 posts) at 08:06 PM
Well, I only lost 1 lb during my first challenge in the first 4 weeks. When I went to get my bf% done on week 4 and I stepped on the scales, I about cried. 1 lb...1 stinking pound. Who the hell loses 1 stupid little pound in 4 weeks?!? BUT, I had lost 4.5% body fat in those 4 weeks. So, don't freak out yet. Get all the way to the end, and then freak out when you look in the mirror and see a wonderful transformation!!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (218 posts) at 08:16 PM

Well, I guess I am a stress eater. Needless to say, I came sooooo close to blowing it today after 12 days of perfection. Why you ask? Because my kids were driving my NUTS!!! My 4 1/2 year old daughter NEVER stops talking and my son who is 2 is in that hitting stage. So in the middle of my frustration...I opened the cupboard. And there they were....chocolate pop-tarts! I touched the box, I smelled the box, I even crinkled the silver wrapping. But, thank goodness, I decided to try another outlet. I called my husband at work and talked with him for five minutes. My daughter is still talking and my son has had at least 10 time outs for hitting me today, but I did not cheat and I am thankful for that.

MANY days I just want to dive into a big ol' bag of something sinful....so long as it keeps me away from the children for just 5 minutes. Maybe even just 3 mins. Maybe not even away from them...perhaps them just being quiet for that long. Not touching each other. Not fighting. Not talking to me. Just silence. Anyway...you know what I mean.
I am stress eater too.
GOOD FOR YOU for just moving on....as hard as it is sometimes! Touching, smelling, and crinkling is sometimes all it takes.

Ok. So I know I should be greatful for my mom allowing me to live with her until I either get a raise or find another job where I can afford to live on my own...but the food temptation is so incredibly hard at times. When I first moved back in it was extremely hard to resist the temptations of food in the house... Slowly it's gotten better but I still give into the temptation when I open the pantry or freezer and find icecream, cookies and other high carb non-bfl snacks!!! Tonight I just couldn't resist and had icecream, cheezits and other junk. So, I guess today was my freeday. Too bad I couldn't wait until my birthday on saturday. :(
Anyway, has anyone encountered similar temptations with roommates or other family members? I have said something to my mom, who already has type 2 diabetes and shouldn't be eating that stuff anyway, but I don't want be annoying about it or make her more self-conscious than she probably already is about her weight. Plus, it's her house so I don't feel like I have a right to tell her not to buy that stuff even if it is making me struggle. Any advice.
THanks - Natalie
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (746 posts) at 09:14 PM
Yep. I live with my mom too. I have had the "talk" with her. But it still happens.
You just have to be strong and move past it. You can't force mom on a diet. So show her it works. I rearranged some things in our kitchen so that "my stuff" is away from the pantry with the "bad stuff". I still have to go in there for the kids, but it minimizes my exposure.
Mom also cooks most nights. I keep tuna, quick rice, and fresh veggies on hand....just in case she makes something for dinner I cannot have. This always me to still eat dinner with the family, but I can quickly make something BFL friendly to eat with them.
I spent most of Challenge 1 giving in and taking only "bites". Yeah, they add up. Try to just avoid and move on.
Its hard, but not impossible.
Good luck.

Ooh, excellent advice, Kerry.
I faced a similar situation after I moved home from NYC last year. I basically kind of commandeered control of the grocery shopping in my house when I moved home, and the cooking, so that worked out beautifully (but I still had to buy unauthorized food for other family members who liked to have some snacks.)
I think the key here is you have to take control mentally. Over the years I have learned just how mental BFL really is. When you control your mind, you can control your actions. You must constantly tell yourself you will not eat those foods until Free day. Don't even give yourself an option.
I can totally relate how hard this is. I am usually the only one doing BFL and it is hard to watch other family memvers making bad food choices (and seeing the health risks involoved.) The best thing you can do for your mom may be to be a happy, cheerful example of being healthy!
You can resist those foods! You are a totally strong chick! You can do this, Natalie!!
Body for Life Forum Message by akladydi (10 posts) at 10:00 PM
Well my situation is not the same but just as hard. I own a convenience store. This is my job. I work in the afternoon and evenings. Just yesterday I found a box of Belgium Chocolates that my gas vendor left for me over christmas. I could not resist yesterday and had 3 small pieces. Today I spotted the box again and I took the box out and then put it away. I am waiting until free day for another taste. I have reduced my evening hours on three days a week to try and help me through my journey. I have all of the non BFL at my fingertips 24 hours a day. Oh I forgot to say that I live right next door to the store too. Anyways I am on week 5 and still going strong. You can do this. Put your mind to it and look to this web site for guidence daily. Take care

Hey Daisy23: I am a lover of sweets. When I want (or should I say....I think I want) something that isn't in my best interest, I go drink a glass of water and wait for a few minutes...when time is up, I will go back to that food and realize I don't want it! Sometimes you have to do the ol' count to ten and step away for a few and analyze why you think you have to have it or why you feel you must give in to the temptation. I find myself wasting a lot of food this way...I will open a snack cake or a candy bar from it's wrapper and then throw it away. I have done this once already when getting gas. You run in and pay for your gas, grab the paper and OH BY THE WAY I think I need that yummy candy bar sitting there under the counter...I end up pitching it in the trash can by my car...what a waste, huh? but I fight the urge. You feel confident after doing so. Keep up the good work! It's just one of those habits that we'll break together!

I love my life when I am doing BFL, living and breathing it, but like most of us, we have normal days when we can't take it all and we lose our temper, have no patience and just give up!
Well that last about 10 minutes and 1 beer (light) ha ha!
Today this is what I had on my mnd:
1) Son's autistic work group at Tripler (20 miles away)
2) Have to stop and get groceries while I am down there
$300 dollars later
3) Made traffic Jam and a very impatient son in car seat
4) Cursing more than I should be at stupid people
5) Locking my son down in high chair to unload groceries
6) Putting my son back in car seat to go to next evaluation appointment over at local school
7) Go to local car insurance place to cancel one policy because they won't take my mom off," she moved out"
8)Driving home in locked down traffic for 10 miles, takes 1 hour
9) Stuff sashimi down my throat
10) give my son a bath
COLLAPSE ON COUCH!
I am so done, sometimes I don't know how I do it,, and I still have to study for college tonight, have to get thru 4 chapters before I go to bed!

I can relate to being teasted as a kid. I was really into gymnastics until my accident. I was teasted so much as a kid for having so much muscel and not having a "neck". Luckily I could beat them all up. LOL!

Harem--
I think following your bodyfat percentage is probably a better tool for you.
I just read another post from a male who has lost inches, changed pant sizes and yet is playing with the same few pounds. Of course now that I am typing I can't remember who it was...look for Weight Loss as a title. Look as his pictures....obvious change, just no real change in weight. Still amazing results and reduction in body fat.
There is a great website which I can post later. The navy bodyfat calculator is more accurate. Many of us use it for consistency, however we all seem to think it runs a little high. As long as you use the same method to track your progress.
If you can throw away your scale, you will find you are much happier!
Most people following the program don't gain weight/fat and end up even more unhappy....unlike some other plans I have been on!
As for bodyfat, I believe that some women who look rather "ripped" are at 12% BF. I think this is the lowest women should go before they start messing up things with fertility. Checking the top 20 is a great idea.
You will do wonderful.
Teresa
I can post the navy bf site later. At work now and it is saved on the desktop at home.

Hi, I have warmed up before lifting, and I have also not warmed up before lifting. I did not really notice a difference. However, it is generally accepted that stretching before exercising is a good idea. I just don't follow it every time so I would think it is up to you to decide what you want to do. If I have the time, I do warm up on the treadmill 1st, or in the hot tub, or both. If I don't have the time, I don't warm up.
Body for Life Forum Message by crazyblonde78 (280 posts) at 12:53 AM
I've heard just the opposite. I heard stretching cold muscles is asking for trouble. You definately want to stretch After a workout, but not before, IMO. Best of luck to you!

I've been doing 10 mins light cardio (as per TNT) before weights and a bit of stretching. Seems to have been beneficial; my muscles (especially legs) don't seem to go into shock and cramp up. My opinion - stretch.
Body for Life Forum Message by lewie (11 posts) at 06:02 AM
In my own exp. with the program the first two sets of lifting are considered the warm up sets. On leg days I,ll stretch afterwords but not before. Also you may try stretching between sets. Good workout wishes for you

Body for Life Forum Message by nutz (143 posts) at 06:23 AM
You may get many different opinions on this....so what the heck, here's mine. First, I don't really consider whey protein and vitamins as supplements in the same vein as creatine, HMB, glutamine, etc. Just so you know my bias up front.
I started by first learning to eat the five to six small meals per day. To do that, I found it convenient to have two whey protein drinks/shakes per day to help me get the protein I needed.
Adding other supplements really depends on your experience with working out and knowing how your body responds. I'd recommend starting out not taking anything besides protein and see how you do. Supplements can get expensive. If you are happy with your results, why spend the cash.
While you are learning how your body responds to proper eating habits and exercise, educate yourself on the various supplements you hear and read about. Some are crap. Others have scientific evidence to support the advertising claims.
Supplements are just that. They are intended to bolster an already well balanced diet. Concentrate first on eating the right foods at the right times.
My 2 cents...

Thanks for the advice. When it comes to supplements I am clueless. Better believe down the road, I may be calling on you again. :-) Right now I'll concentrate on eating the right foods, in the right amounts, at the right times.
Speaking of eating times...what do you all think about the last snack of the day. Here's my typical eating schedule...
Breakfast 8am
Snack #1 10:30-11am
Lunch 1pm
Snack #2 3:30pm
Dinner 6:30-7pm
Snack #3 9pm
I have always been told not to eat late at night. Can I just skip the last snack of the day? Last night I was feeling a bit hungry so I went ahead with it. I usually go to bed between 11-12pm.

Good Luck to you,

I've also always thought it was bad to eat just before bed... but did my first bedtime snack last night at 9pm (went to bed at about 9:30).... I do workout in the morning now though at about 6:30, and eat meal 1 at 8 once I'm at work.
Also curious of the benefits of a small meal before bed....
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (268 posts) at 09:34 AM
I always eat a cup of fat free cottage cheese at 10:00pm, it helps keep your metabolism going through out the night. Eating fat or foods high in carbs (sugars) is not the best thing to do before bed. As far as supplements, I recommend throwing at least two meal replacements in a day. These are packed with protein, vitamins and nutrients. I break my challenges into three 4 week sessions. First trimester I only take 3 myoplex a day and a fat burner, next trimester I throw in creatine and HMB but loose the burner, then I finish with everthing but the last week I ditch the creatine to get a cut look. Almost every person that has one the official challenge took two or more supps. Make sure you get enough protein and vitamins and minerals. Good luck.

I like for my late night snack to be a bowl of Fiber One. The fiber is low GI and a good metabolism booster and the milk protein is mostly casein (sp?) which is absorbed more slowly than whey. So the cottage cheese is also a good choice.
I think, overall, going to bed hungry is not optimal.

Lis72, If I were you, I would invest the money in "Eating For Life". I bought the book and it has changed my way of thinking. I didn't know a thing about eating healthy or cooking... However, this book clearly explained things to me in detail that I didn't know. Don't get me wrong, this website is wonderful for getting great information, but in my opinion, the book is a MUST. Just to let you know, I bought the book, came home, sat down, and read the entire thing before I got back up again... Very interesting read.

I just wanted to know if I am the only one that looked at my before picture taken this first week of BFL and said "I don't want anyone to see that!" Still haven't worked up the courage to share it with you. We will see...

Not me. Evidently there is NO shame in my game. I look like I swallowed my Harley. I did find that posting my before pic has been a great motivator though.
Body for Life Forum Message by tcstone (746 posts) at 08:58 AM
yep. me. But I just did it.
They are still embarassing. Oh well. That's the way it is. I am trying to change it.
My first pictures I took with a regular camera. Took them to Wal-Mart to develop. 1 hour and I waited. I paid and left. I nearly feel over on the floor when I saw those pictures of me. It was horrible. But it started my Challenge the next day.
Its humbling. I think this is why we do it.

I couldn't do it at first. In fact, I've been lurking on tracker rather than posting cuz I'm in hiding! I have NEVER heard anyone say they enjoyed posting their before photos--unless it was after the challenge.
Posting the before photo is very difficult and personally, I can't wait for the 30 Jan so I can post my end of week four photos.
As Harleyman says, it's very motivating. I don't like what I see and it makes me want to eat well and do my workouts. Oh, don't forget to post your measurements every week. I got a nice surprise this week and it has helped me stay on the straight and narrow.
With very best wishes,
Persephone

I didn't want to, but I knew the added accountability would do me good. It's pretty horrifying to acknowledge where we actually stand. But when you can post progress pics a few weeks later it's VERY encouraging!!!
Just suck it up and post those pics! You'll feel an added sense of "I NEVER WANT TO LOOK LIKE THIS AGAIN!" and you'll work your tail off to get where you want to be.

I was embarressed by my Before Photo. But, not it is laminted to the back of my BFL approved food list. It goes with me EVERYWHERE.
It's a great reminder of where I've been and where I will NOT venture again. :)
You'll see. You will be very glad you took the pictures, even if you don't want to share them yet.

I'm right there with you - mine will NOT be posted until I have a progress shot to post with it. And with this wonderful program that could be this weekend!!!!

Me too. But I did take a before picture it's on my fridge. It keeps me from reaching for the crap. The hardest thing for me that I still have crap in my house. My husband keeps buying it for himself. Everytime I see him eating chips (my weakness) I just look at my picture and have a couple glasses of water. After all I'm the one who made the committment to change. I quite smoking 5 years ago, I can quite eatting crap!
My husband always tells me can eat the chips in another room if it bothers me, but I will not let him I have to face my temptation head on. It will only make me stronger!
Who knows after he sees my transformation he might actually what to do it too. (crossing my fingers)

It was hard for me to post my before pictures, but that just cemented my goals.
For some people (like myself) it helps me to stay focused on my goals knowing that people see me as I really am. I will not allow 12 weeks to pass and still be looking anything like that!
Best of luck on your challenge!

Yes, I too have been hiding my photos from the rest of the tracker world but after reading these posts maybe I will put them up. I think it may make me work harder for the duration (I'm working hard now but am fearful of falling off the wagon around week 5 or 6 when the newness has worn off and I have another 6 weeks to go.)
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (94 posts) at 08:47 PM
Nope. Everyone thinks their picture is the worst. No one is looking at mine thinking, "OH MY HECK, she is DISGUSTING," because they are too busy thinking their own is disgusting.
That being said, mine aren't up. Not a hypocrite--just don't have a digital camera or a scanner. I'll be borrowing one this weekend, so my "befores" will actually be "Week 2" pictures. Stay tuned for further grossness . . .
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (218 posts) at 08:57 PM
I was horrified by my before picture... if you look in my profile you will see why. But I put it up anyway. And everyone here was so supportive, I knew it was ok. And when I posted new pictures 4 weeks later and couldn't really see much change, everybody here jumped on and pointed out changes THEY could see that I couldn't.
No one will judge you here. No one will get grossed out. There is nothing but support here. It's ok. Post your pictures. :)

I really didn't want to post mine, but did because I knew that would light a fire in me. I still hesitate posting more photos, but once they are there, I'm happy I did because I can see that I'm s-l-o-w-l-y making progress.
My word of advise, is to either just do it and get it over with, or wait till you're ready. Me, I'd just get it over with and use it to work hard to NOT look like that bad ever again!

I think some of you guys might think this is funny.
Remember your first LBWO is quite a while. Well I had mine on Wed. morning. So can you imagine how I must feel today? I actually have to think twice if I really need to go to the bathroom. Who knew sitting on a toliet could be so difficult. LOL!

Oh Miranda!
I FEEL YOUR PAIN, but have a solution.
Place your legs on either side of the bowl and bend from your waist.
Place your hands on the front of the rim (In between your legs).
As you lower yourself down, place most of your weight on your hands.
This has gotten me throught the past two days! ;o)
Best of luck!

LOL I'm just picturing Bel's method and it's cracking me up -- what if you've just had your first UBWO in a while two days before? LMAO! But I'm sure it works better than the lean and drop onto the toilet method, lol.
Yep, I feel your pain, too. Had my first LBWO in months last week. I hurt for a whole week. I couldn't put down the foot rest on my recliner without using my hands for 5 days.
It gets better though! :)

Hello all!
This morning was my first morning of cardio, I've never been a big runner, but I'm game to become one!
So I stepped onto the treadmill first thing this morning, did a warm up walk (about 3 mph)for about 5 mins, then bumped it up to 4.5 mph (a run for my stubby little legs)... I could hardly go 5 mins straight without having to stop for my breath, mainly because the pain in my side was getting so bad!... I would slow down to a walk for a min or so to catch my breath and run again... did this about 3 times, totalling about 35 mins all together. Even though I didnt do a solid 20 mins running, do you suppose it would still count as 20 mins of cardio? I so felt like I wimped out on it this morning! Really wish I had more than just a treadmill at home =(
I felt like such a mondo wimp!
This will go away if I just keep at it right? Any suggestions for that aweful side stitch??
Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (356 posts) at 01:36 PM
Really work on keeping your breathing steady. I do in for three counts, out for three counts. It took me awhile to break through getting the side stitches, but it was worth it.
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (19 posts) at 01:42 PM
You're probably just not used to running, I wouldn't worry about the stitch. However, in another thread you mentioned you have the book Body-For-Life, but have you actually read it through before starting the program? The reason I ask is that there is a very specific high intensity cardio routine which you must follow for success and unless you are familiar with it you won't be doing it right.
You can learn more at the following website, but I strongly recommend you read the book as it goes into more detail:

hey again Ryan =)
I admit to having a bad habit of being a skim reader.... and Bill gets so preachy and repetitive sometimes with his success stories I admit I have skipped chunks >_< The bit youre talking about is probably one of them!! I will look for that tonight, which chapter? =)
Glad to know the stitch goes away... havent run enough to get one of those since High School.. sad eh??
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (19 posts) at 01:55 PM
LOL, I guess he does appear to lay it on thick at times, but it really is essential to read that book from cover to cover...with regards to your question though, Part IV-The Training For Life Experience...p64-67 for the specific cardio info.
Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (36 posts) at 02:00 PM
I think I am a victim of my skim reading with every book I read, I just get so excited to know how the story goes I skim the whole thing in one quick go... then later will go back and read it through. Apparently this isnt the case with just novels! heheh... I've been busted. >_<
Thanks Ryan ;-)

It's all about progress not perfection. As you go through the weeks you will be able to look back upon this and see how much you have progressed.
You can always start out with a walk and make it a faster and faster letting the last few intervals be at a jog until you adapt to it. If you have not been exercising in awhile your high intensity is just that your own personal high intensity. A new runner does not just start off running long distances. They learn and build up stamina before they go run 20 miles. They start off with 1-5 and gradually move up.
So slow down and work yourself up to jogging the full intervals of intensity. When I started I found it easier to start off on the elliptical. Then I moved to the treadmill. But that was me. Now this does not mean take it easy lol on your HIIT sessions but it should not be impossible, but it should be uncomfortable in your 3-4-& 5th intervals. And ultimately hitting a 10 on that last min. A 10 feels like you absolutely cannot go on any longer. It should cause you to really dig deep to finish off that min. Even though you feel like you may keel over you won't. You gotta recognize that. I am sure you understand what I mean. lol.
Everyones fitness levels are different when they start. It was very sobering when I started because i used to be a Sprinter and I still remembered how my body felt tuned to perfection. And I was nowhere even close to perfection when I started LOL. I started out on the elliptical on Level 1 huffin' and puffin! Now I am back to a lot of sprint work and when I finished my challenge I was up to Level 15 of resistance on the elliptical. So you will progress. Just be patient with yourself and start out where it is comfortable but challenging for you. Yes reading the book would be really helpful too if you have not read it throughly yet. Good luck sorry so long.

Your posts are never too long T~N~T =) Thanks, helped alot =D
for now, my only option is the treadmill unfortunately.... but I think my mistake this morning was that I was expecting that I should be running for 20 mins solid! O_O
I know what you mean by the humbling experience of it all... I've been doing yoga for over a year now and thought I was much more fit because of it (at least I am more than I was a year ago).. but whew! Even in Ashtanga yoga I dont get stitches!
Body for Life Forum Message by Runningsouthernstyle (37 posts) at 02:20 PM
I took this off of coolrunningdotcom, it is how I ditched the stitch (god that is cheesey) Hope it helps you out.
The Stitch
Description:
We've all had this one, a sudden sharp pain in the side of the upper abdomen at the base of the ribs. The side stitch typically strikes when you're really pushing yourself and fades quickly when you slow down or stop. The stitch is particularly common for new runners still adjusting to the rigors of running.
Likely causes:
The pain is caused by a spasm of the diaphragm, the muscle that controls your breathing. There are a number of possible reasons for this. If your breathing isn't controlled and disciplined, the diaphragm may be complaining. If you are running too soon after eating, your heavy stomach may literally be tugging at the ligaments connected to the diaphragm. Or you may simply be running too fast for your body's breathing machinery to keep up.
Remedy:
A stitch will usually go away quickly after just slowing down or stopping. If you're in a race or you just don't want to stop, however, you can often make it go away by bringing your breathing into careful control. Concentrate on belly breathing, pushing your belly out when you breathe in and relaxing it as you breathe out. Take deep breaths on the intake, and exhale suddenly, even noisily. To get the diaphragm to contract in rhythm with your steps, try to inhale and exhale as you land on your left foot. Strange but true, this can help prevent spasms by encouraging the diaphragm to bounce along in sync with your stride.
If the pain is just too much and you have to stop, try bending over and raising your knee on the stitch side while pressing your fingers deep into the painful area and tightening your stomach muscles. Or just walk while belly breathing.

Scattergold,
When I started BFL last March, I couldn't even run 2 minutes straight. Now I'm running the whole 20 minutes HIIT, and sometimes 3 miles straight! Just be patient and you'll get there! Don't give up!
You're lucky you're only experiencing side stitches. I had work through that, shin splints, knee pains...you name it!
As for the side stitches, it's all in the breathing. The article above is an excellent guide.
