I used ground or milled flax seed all the time, I put it on cereal, yogurt, salad, mix it in salad dressing, mix it w/hamburger, protein shakes, on top of veggies, it has a very very mild nutty flavor, I'll put it on almost anything haha
I also take supliments of flax seed oil
flax seed is one of the best things you can get into your body

When you get sore like that it is called DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). The pain of DOMS is said to occur within the first 24 to 48 hours following exercise. Peak intensity of discomfort occurs somewhere between 24 to 72 hours following exercise. The soreness usually subsides within 7 to 10 days after the initial damage has occurred.
Of the three types of muscle in our bodies, cardiac(heart muscle), smooth (which lines our blood vessels) and skeletal (which is attached to our skeletons, for example, you’re biceps muscle) , DOMS effects only skeletal muscle. Whats more, DOMS can occur in any skeletal muscle in the body and can occur regardless of the persons fitness level.
DOMS is not caused by lactic acid in the muscle. Lactic acid is a by product of burning sugars for energy duiring intense physical exercise. Within an hour after exercise, most, if not all, of the lactic acid produced in the muscles is removed and degraded. This misconception of lactic acid and DOMS probably got started by that fact that lactic acid is in fact produced in the muscles during intense exercise and does cause muscles to fatigue. The key point to remember is that muscle fatigue and DOMS are two different processes and just because they sometimes seem to go hand in hand, they are not related in any way.
DOMS does not result in any long term damage to muscle. This makes sense; if it did, we would expect to see great declines in the abilities of professional athletes during the course of their careers.
Studies have shown that the vast majority of damage associated with DOMS is attributed to eccentric muscle contractions, in which the muscle fibers are lengthened as force is applied to them. Eccentric muscle contractions occur, for example, when you run downhill, or as you are lower a weight (such as during a squat or an arm curl).

Ok, I was getting a little bored doing my normal lower body and ab routine, so I decided to buy a couple different sized balance balls and give that a shot. WOW, what a way to shake up your resistance routine! Not only can you really get a good workout using one of these, but you will use muscles you don't use on a normal crunch routine on the floor or a lower body workout using your bench. It really takes coordination and balance to a new level too. If you haven't given the balance ball a try, I highly reccommend it. Your abs, glutes, obliques, quads and hams will thank you for it. Well maybe not tomorrow..... :-).

I'm Loving it. We've had about 3 snow falls and none of them were bad. Usually it snow's and every one and everything is shut down or sliding around. Now maybe if I was in grade school I would be very upset by now but this is going my way. Mayb I don't have to move to Florida lol. It was 60 degree's on Thursday and snowed friday and suppose to be 50 today. Like they say if you don't like the weather in St. Louis just wait an hour.

Anyway, keep your fingers crossed that the field behind my new house doesn't go up in flames.

World ending? Nope. Go read the "Left Behind" book series for those two author's view of the world end events.
Just unusual weather patterns, part of Mother Nature's cycle. As for global warming, if you believe in that, just wait until China gets it's growth going at full-speed.

I'm really sorry about that post. I should not have said anything, since I was very sick and already cranky! I think I'm somewhat emotionally attached to the book, even with all its flaws, because reading it was what kicked me into FINALLY doing a full Challenge. I got a lot out of her message about how the very long menopausal process screws with women's bodies. But I agree that her content on the food and training plan is light, and so I followed Bill's plan to a T.
I think before she wrote that book (BFL for Women), she had an established relationship with Discovery, so this seems like an enhancement of business...for both of them!
I don't get cable, so let me know what you think about the show.

And, thanks to her, it's o.k. now for me to shed a few tears in the gym when I fail to hit a personal best on the donkey calf machine. I haven't started wearing eye makeup yet, but it could happen!

Well as most of you know, I will be retiring from the Navy in 2007 and I have some goals of paying off 4 major bills before then and putting $10,000 in the bank for the purchase of my home..."Wherever that may be"
and that means either I would have to do without something, to pay them off, win the lottery or money fall from the heavens, well it just about did.
My best friend here in Hawaii lives down the road from me and her and the family are moving to Washington, I hate to see them go, she is my BF,,, but the Navy can send you all over the world, With that being said, the are going to try and sale their house quickly so they can concentrate on buying a house up there, well where are they staying?? " WITH ME!" With mom gone, my friend and her husband can have her room, and the boys can have Cameron's room, heck he sleeps with me anyway! lol! And we still have plenty of room to spare! And of course, all I expected them to pay was for their groceries and some for utilities, family of 4 will defintely cause it to go up~ but you know they are going to pay over 1/2 of my rent each month and buy groceries! So with that extra money, I can pay off the bills earlier than planned, save a little more than expected and retire ON TIME!
See everything works out~ :)-

God is amazing. During my company's Holiday work shut down, I finally told our Associate Pastor about our financial struggles (1st mortgage, 2nd mortgage, and two other 1st mortgages on two investment homes we bought, plus high credit card, vehicles breaking down, inability to sell the one finished and on the market investment home, etc.). He said he would pray for us. Guess what? The 1st day back to work, 4 days after I told him of our struggles and stressful Christmas had been this year due to finances, I received a phone call from our Realtor saying we had a legit offer. We countered, the buyers accpeted, and we close on Jan. 23. Coincidence? In the past I would have said yes, coincidence. And I would have been wrong. It is God. After being on the market for approx. 65 days in a hot real estate market here, why else would I have 6 Realtors show the house after January 1st when there had been ZERO showings after the 1st two weeks, from just before Halloween? God is amazing. It is nice to hear he is helping you, Udenia. I pray for you a lot.

My boss gave everyone in the company $4,000 bonus this year, me being new to the company didn't expect a penny. I was suprised when he handed me $2000 in cash thanking me for my dedication and good fortune. My older sister is struggling financially with a 12 year career. The hospital she works for is going bankrupt and is trying it's best to "NOT". She is afraid to go look for another job in fear of losing her job if they recover. She also fears having to start over with another job in a small town. She has given up all the luxuries of life, phone, cell, cable, etc...just necessities. HOWEVER, she is making sure she makes enough to put her son through art school. When my boss gave me this money, I totally needed it. I am dirt poor and live from month to month! Instantly I knew I was going to give it to my sister. I still have to send it..but it will help her get out of the red, even if it's just for a month or two! My reward...knowing my sister has help. a side note story: My boss and I were talking about his new hi-tech 35 mm digital camera he bought (he's a millionaire). He knows that I love photography as well and that I have been checking ebay for a used 35 mm. He asked if I was going to use my bonus to finally buy one. I told him my intentions for the money and by the time the conversation was over he promised me his old camera and all it's lenses free of charge. Everything works in a full circle when hearts are open and generosity is above our own wants and needs!

I am listening to a boxed 6- CD set called "The Dynamic Power of Deliberate Creation" Dr. Anthony. I am on my 2nd CD since Monday and I see life so differently. Between it and BFL, my entire life is totally coming into place. I am back in a marriage that almost failed (6 month seperation). I am only 35 and feel that I found the importance of life at an early time in my life. If I wouldn't have opened my eyes, I don't know how long it would take me to see that life is far too valuable to put pride and egos above what is important! This CD set focuses on that. I also suggest "Your best life now" by Joel Osteen. GREAT BOOK!

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (108 posts) at 11:20 AM
Just throw it in the oven at 350. It takes about 45 - 60 minutes. The skin just peels away at that point. So you don't even really have to scrub them or peel them or anything. Just toss them in the oven.

Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (108 posts) at 08:07 PM
I was playing with some of the other pancake recipes and they use cottage cheese.
I found that my recipe above can be kind of thin and I've added more oats for a total of 1.5 cup oats. Add a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese to it to balance the carb/protein. (I was really trying to keep them even). You also don't have to have the zest. Enough flavor with the pumpkin pie spices.
So I think this is better....2 cups of egg whites, 1.5 cups of oats, 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1/4 cup of sweet potato and the seasonings as listed above. Someone added baking soda too. I didn't notice any really difference but it might make them fluffier. If so 1/2 teaspoon is probably enough.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (251 posts) at 12:18 PM
Personally, I think it's a great product. The protein is soy, which is not the best source for men, but for that last "meal of the day" I like it to take it with just a bit of carb. Netrition.com had it on sale really cheap last time I looked. Buying it by the case is really the best buy. I like both the chocolate and vanilla.

Body for Life Forum Message by MelJ113074 (11 posts) at 06:33 AM
What I do for cardio is 20 min on the treadmill. I walk the first 2 min at 3.0 and then my interval levels 3.5,4.0,4.5,5.0 and 5.5 for my "10". Then I do a 5 min cooldown.
Also I hate doing 4.0 on the treadmill (I don't know why but it hurts the muscle on the outside of my lower leg) so I think this week I'll do 2 min of 4.5 and skip 4.0. Then next week if I feel up to the challenge I may do 3.5,4.5,5.0,5.5 and 6.0 for my "10".
Let me know if I'm on the right track here and what you do on the treadmill.
Melissa
Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (30 posts) at 06:46 AM
You seem to be on the right track, or at least have the principles behind the HIIT correct. It's hard to say if your levels are right really as we all have our own intensity levels determined by our general level of fitness.
That's the beauty of this program. Your level 10 is your level 10, so if you're giving it 100% effort and not being able to give one more minute at that setting, then you're doing fine.
So if 5.5 is your "10" for now, then that's great! Just remember your aim is to increase it each session and not get stuck in the comfort zone. Good luck for next time!
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (108 posts) at 07:27 PM
Melissa, you may enjoy increasing the incline instead of the speed sometimes. When I increase the incline I really feel the work on the back of my legs and my glutes.
It's great to mix it up. Go for speed one time and then go for the steadily increasing climb.
I also like to do all workouts at level 2 incline at the minimum. Then when I run outside in a flat area it feels so easy. And the hills don't kill me.

It would be really helpful for me if some other women who use dumbells could tell me what they are doing for legs. What exercise and how much weight? - Specifically Quads and Hams. Thank You.
Body for Life Forum Message by LittleBig (56 posts) at 09:44 AM
Quads-You can do squats...but I find I can't hold enough weight so I have to use a barbell.
Hamstrings-walking lunges. These are great for toning the behind and hams.
Look in the Body for Life book in the back at the exercises and there should be some examples.
Good Luck!
Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (205 posts) at 09:50 AM
Try one leg lunges. Just place your back foot on a bench or couch or something of that height and then do your lunge. Make sure your front knee does not go over your toe!! If you need to step out further then do it so you don't put any more strain on the knee. These are KILLER!! You may not be able to use any weight the first few times.
For hamstrings I do straight-leg deadlift. Take a dumbbell or barbell and bend at the waist with knees slightly bent and keep the weight as close to your shins as possible, even touching them is best. And then stand back up keeping the weight as close to your shins as possible. You want to make sure you keep your back straight at all times to get the full affect on your hams. HTH!!
SHelly =)
Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (104 posts) at 10:05 AM
shkelly, I also do the bench lunges and the deadlift. Bench lunges are the DEVIL
Body for Life Forum Message by morpho_veja (21 posts) at 10:51 AM
At my max I can do lunges holding 25lb dumbells do I keep it that high - decrease - increase? I don't want HUGE legs!!
Body for Life Forum Message by morpho_veja (21 posts) at 10:52 AM
I guess my question is not what exersises but rather how much weight?
Body for Life Forum Message by Tai-Kee (2411 posts) at 11:08 AM
You wont get huge legs from 50 lbs.
I can squat 160 and leg press 260-300 on a good day - been doing this for over a year now, and NO big legs.
That's just a myth. Work them as HARD as you can.
Body for Life Forum Message by morpho_veja (21 posts) at 11:14 AM
Thanks, perhaps I should even move from doing dumbells to barbell?
Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (124 posts) at 11:43 AM
On lower body days I love using the swissball for my final 12 after my full sets of lunges. This one kills my butt and hamstrings...
Lie on the floor with your legs fully extended and feet on top of the swissball (feet slightly closer together than shoulder width). Draw in your abs (you want them strongly braced for this), and squeeze your butt as you use your legs to lift your hips up off the floor. You're looking for a straight line from shoulder to feet here. Slowly lower. Once you've got that going try lifting and holding at the top, keep hips held high, and bend knees as you roll the ball in towards your butt. Roll it back out, then slowly lower.
I probably haven't explained this very well, but if you can find the right technique with this then you should be shaking and your muscles screaming for mercy by the end of the 12.
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (730 posts) at 11:48 AM
Morpho -
You can go to the barbell, but you can get a great workout from the dumbells too. For my Quads, I do Dumbell Squats or One Leg Dumbbell Squats, then for the last 12 I move to the Barbell for more squats. The weights in each hand are 5,10,15,20. When doing these, focus on form and really squatting, while keeping your back straight. Go slowly, especially when coming back up.
For hammy's, I do Standing Dead Lifts or One Leg Standing Dead Lifts, followed by One Leg Lunges. The weights I use are in the same increments as above. Again...focus on proper form and slow movements.
Try alternating between the dumbbells and barbells every few weeks, and you will find different muscles will be sore even though you are doing the same excercises.

My next LBW is on Monday - I will try it and post how I am feeling after...and the next day. Maybe that is what my problem has been, my form may be off. My gym use to have the weights in a different room (with mirrors) so it was nice to see myself and how my form was. The room they are in now does not have mirrors. Maybe I will just take the weights out over to where the mirrors are. I started doing this for my back workout (makes a huge difference when I am going slow and steady and seeing my form!) Thank you so much for all the feedback!

I eat them every day. I have some that are fresh and some I've cut up and frozen in baggies so when I want to add a banana to a chocolate protein shake (mmmmmmmmmmmmmm) I have them ready.
And I have had that song in my head since I saw the title of the thread, it's not even Nicabod's fault.
It's fruit, people. Fruit is GOOD for you. :)

This is seriously the funniest thread I've ever been a part of! It's a good thing though...I mean look at us. We are the ex candy bar, ice cream, fast food junkies having a heated debate about whether or not it's okay to have bananas. And the reason is...because we are all passionate about BFL. That's pretty amazing if you really think about it.
Oh, plus, reading this has really gotten my heart rate up so I can go do my cardio now! =)
Stay Strong!

RIE, your post didn't make any more sense just because you repeated it twice! You might try logic instead of volume if you're trying to convince me I'm wrong. I never said a banana was evil. I never said someone couldn't eat a banana or that would kill their challenge. What I did try to say was that they are not great food for challenges/transformations. If YOU want to eat them, go ahead. As I've always said about bananas, "eat bananas, 100,000 monkeys can't be wrong!" And, as to the person who said no one ever got fat just eating fruits and vegetables, I've never seen anyone who ate just fruits and vegetables. Not only that, but certainly SOME fruits are more likely to cause you to store fat than others, and those are the sugary ones that spike the insulin, which causes the body to store fat. It's not that the food itself is fat, but that the insulin reaction causes fat storage due to the need to lower blood sugar rate. Well, that's the last post for me on this topic--I'm being driven bananas over this!! Fun discussion though.

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (730 posts) at 03:00 PM
Oh my! I was curious as to why there were so many posts to a banana thread! Now I know! lol. I really didn't know the banana was so controversial! I have gotten a big kick out of this though! I'm not saying this is right or wrong, but I do throw a banana in my daily menu once or twice a week as my carb. Why? It helps keep my sweet tooth away. I do keep track of all of my calories, fat, carb and protein intake and stay 20%fat 30%carbs and 50% protein. So I'm going to point out that if you are tracking your intake the way I am and staying consistent, I don't see how eating a banana every once in a while would hinder progress. My bananas are being well used and well balanced.
Great outlooks from both sides of the table on this discussion.
Jennifer

I'm the one with anemia - just for the record this is due to a physical condition (female in nature) that I have been living with for 18 months and has nothing - NOTHING - to do with the BFL diet. I just want to make that clear because even with the anemia I've felt better eating the BFL way for the past two weeks than I have for a long time.

Hi Everyone!
Some of you know this, but for those who don't, (it all happened so fast) I went to the Oprah Winfrey Show Thursday! (I took my Mom)
Let me start off by saying this will be a little long and I'm sure you ladies will get more out of it than you men, so feel free to just peruse this if you want to! ha
It was awesome! As I thought it would be!
The show will air Monday, January 16th! THIS Monday! (4:00pm EST)
We also taped an "After Show" that airs on the Oxygen channel They weren't quite sure when that would air. It will be the one with Neil Diamond though. (her website says the after shows air on Friday's @ 7pm EST or Sunday's @ 2pm EST)
We were all waiting in this green room (except it was yellow...ha) and then they called my name and a few others first. As we walked into the studio I saw this balcony behind the stage kind of in the back and it was dark... it was already filled with girls, so I asked the girl that called me if that's where I was going to be and she said "Oh, no honey, we want you in the front row!" YEAH! I was 2 seats away from Oprah! They took a couple of girls that were going to be asking questions back to touch up their make and they looked at me and said "You look great", which leads me to believe that I may wear too much make-up! haha I am so glad that I wasn't on the balcony, because they couldn't even see the show back there in the dark! I was dancing enough for everyone right there in the FRONT ROW! You know I was all prepared to go up on stage and sing "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with him too!
When Oprah walks out to start the show she holds my hand when she gets to the end of the stage! Samuel L. Jackson was the first guest, and I was so close all I had to do was lean forward and I could have touched him! I was surprised at how small and intimate the studio and stage was! It looks really BIG on t.v., which makes me believe that I may look really BIG on t.v. too! ha
In-between taping Oprah just talked to us. I mean she talked directly to me! She said "Look at my shoes, aren't the great?" I said that they were beautiful and she said "Yeah girl, but they are killing me!" I told her that if she wanted to take them off and give them to me after the show that would be fine with me! She laughed. She probably thought I was a shoe stealing stalker! Ha
Then Neil Diamond came out. That man is 64 years old and is still awesome! The first time I ever saw him I was 18 (many, many moons ago) and he was as good yesterday as he was back then! He came right to the edge of the stage and sang to me, and then he winked at me! HA! A 64 year old man winked at me! HA
At one point they started auctioning off one of Neil's sparkly (god awful yet historical) outfits that he used to wear. Little by little they would add things, a CD, a signed CD. All of the proceeds went to her Angel Network, so those women were offering a LOT of cash. It got up to $2,000 when Oprah said do I hear $2,500 and you get to go to dinner with Neil Diamond! They freaked! There was this girl sitting right next to me that was maybe 26 and she was crying and shaking the whole time Neil was singing. How is she even old enough to be crying about Neil Diamond? At first I thought she might be crying because she thought the show was going to be about NSYNC, not Neil Diamond! ha On the other side of her was Oprah's best friend Gail. Well, Gail said that she would pay the $2,500 and was giving it to this girl right next to me! It was awesome! She had borrowed my lipstick a little earlier and she turned to me and said that she couldn't believe it and I said I think it was the lipstick! haha
I was just so impressed with how "real" and down to earth Oprah is. She is so smooth. No re-takes, no "um's"... the camera just kept rolling. I didn't get a new car or a trip to Hawaii, but I did get a Neil Diamond CD and one of his 2005 Concert books and her new book from her Book Club and a great experience that I won't soon forget!
The only thing that would have made it better would have been being able to take my camera! (I take my camera with me everywhere!)There were no signed autographs, no hugs, not even a pen that said Oprah, but I did get to talk to her and hold her hand!
p.s she didn't give me her shoes. ha
***This just in... My picture is on the http://www.oprah.com/ website! (and yes, my tongue is sticking out! haha)

Dad had every album & now his collection has turned to cd's. It's funny when I see all ages of people singing along with his songs. I can brag though that you can pop in any old unknown Neil song & I will come darn close to being able to sing along.

It just ocurred to me that this month marks my 6 months on BFL. Wow! Honestly...I never thought I'd make it this long! This is by far the record for any program that I have ever stuck to! I would diet, or not eat and not excercise. I hated excercise! I would even go to the length of telling people that I was allergic to excercise! lol. You should have seen the look on their faces! While I haven't met all of my goals yet, I know I'm slowly inching towards them! I'm still not too fond of cardio, but get it done because I know it has results! But I love the weight lifting! And I can live with the eating, and just got my EFL book so I can start trying new things to make it even more interesting. I've come a long way. My top weight non-pregnant was 165 years ago (200 pregnant, UGH!) and when I started BFL, around 153 I think. Over the years, I've been all over that darn scale! 130, 134, 143, 153, etc, etc, etc
Finally, FINALLY no more yo-yoing! I feel better than ever and am proud of my accomplishments so far!
To all of you newbies....have patience.
"If You WORK it, IT will come!"
Happy Saturday Everyone!

Happy 6 Month Anniversary!
I felt the same way, when I first started BFL I thought I was just trying another thing that I probably wouldn't stick with for long. Nice attitude, right? But once it's ingrained in you, it's hard not to stick with it in some respect. Even the last couple of months when I wasn't really on the wagon so much, I was eating BFL style 90% of the time.
Looking forward to your next 6 months! Work it!

It's SATURDAY and it's a lazy day...So let's wake up the troops (at least mentally!)
Last night I had an absolute craving for an "approved" food on the BFL food list. I was a little carb depleted I must admit. So I hammered a big bowl of popcorn cooked the old-fashioned way with olive oil. While ENJOYING this "binge" I had this thought.........
What is the difference between
"Binge-ing"
vs
Eating an "unapproved" food
To make this THREAD an interesting and lively debate, the Posts must alternate "POINT" then "COUNTERPOINT." If you want to weigh in on a POINT, then simply state which POINT you are COUNTERING!
May the DEBATE begin!!!

Bingeing is eating beyond full on any kind of food. Eating an unapproved food is eating something that is not on the list BECAUSE it is high in fat or too low in essential nutrients to make it worth eating.
Body for Life Forum Message by BIG BULL (904 posts) at 12:56 PM
Guess everybody is asleep or out...
Now that we have a definition, which is worse for you???
Body for Life Forum Message by nikki (100 posts) at 01:10 PM
bingeing is worse for you. you take in way too many calories. if you just eat one small authorized food, you can easily burn off the extra calories. After a binge you're usually too sick to even move.
Body for Life Forum Message by Forest Tech (123 posts) at 01:12 PM
I would say binging is.. because even if you were eating a moderately good food you are eating beyond being full. Your stomach can hold a lot so you are likely getting waay more calories than having a serving of unauthorized food.. unless you are binging on lettuce of celery that is.. Plus binging has that phsycological effect of making you feel gross and out of control which could last all day and lead to a lot more cheating. I think all in all binging is way worse!
Body for Life Forum Message by TaraC29 (129 posts) at 01:16 PM
I counter that binging is worse for you...
If you eat clean for 30 days and have one "binge" day, you are actually doing your body good...if you eat a small/medium amount of "dirty" foods daily than you are not giving your body the chance to clean up and get lean.
Counter??
Body for Life Forum Message by BIG BULL (904 posts) at 01:22 PM
2 Binge POINTS to 1 "Unapproved" food POINT...
Do we have a COUNTER to Tara's point that eating an UNAPPROVED food is worse???
Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (205 posts) at 02:10 PM
Binging is worse as it shows NO self control. The biggest thing you can do to improve your mind and body is to exercise will power/self control. By having a free day you are allowing yourself a small bit of something that you wouldn't normally have in moderation(1 day vs. 6). Binging is not healthy for your mind! If all you want to do is improve your body then by all means binge but if you are going for the full body makeover, free day is FAR better. Better to have control of ourselves!
Shelly =)
Body for Life Forum Message by Forest Tech (123 posts) at 06:22 PM
Well sure if you binge one time as compared to having unauthorized foods every day then you are worse off.. but if you do equal amounts of binging as eating unauthorized foods then you are still likely going to net more calories and feel 10 times worse. But yes I agree that one binge day compared to day after day of unauthorized is better..
Body for Life Forum Message by cookie1135 (1388 posts) at 06:57 PM
Binging on any type of food is not healthy, and the binging itself can become addictive!
Body for Life Forum Message by MelJ113074 (11 posts) at 12:35 PM
Are these ok to uses. There's 21g protein, 24g total carbohydrate but 3g Impact carbs. What's the difference between the total carb # and the impact carb #? Can I still have these as a meal?
Thanks
Melissa
Body for Life Forum Message by VegasGuy (103 posts) at 12:45 PM
Hey Melissa,
I prefer the Myoplex Carb Sense. There is more protein in them than the AdvantEdge(28g in most).
As for using them as a meal...I would reccomend to use them only when necessary. They are great to keep in your car or bag so that you can have them ready if you are not able to have an actual meal. I personally believe that you should have actual food (authorized, of course) whenever possible. I have a Myoplex shake after my workouts, because they are easily and quickly digested (nutrients get to your body faster). Then the rest of the day I eat small meals. I do eat the bars when I can't make time to have a food meal, or when no healthy options are available to me.
Oh, and impact carbs are the carbs that effect your blood sugar. The lower this number the better. Check out Dr. Hussmans site too, I think he discusses this a little bit. www.hussmanfitness.org
Stay Strong,
Chris
Body for Life Forum Message by PhatMom2006 (aka Bflmom2004) (1074 posts) at 12:49 PM
I personally love them...and use them quite a bit...plus they are so much less expensive than the Myoplex...thats just my opinion though...
Hugs
Christie
Body for Life Forum Message by VegasGuy (103 posts) at 01:03 PM
I agree Christie, they are less expensive than the Myoplex Bars. I guess I use the Myoplex Carb Sense Bars because, as a big guy, I need the extra protein. But I'm sure if you don't need the extra protein, then the AdvantEdge are just as good. =)

Hi this is my first challenge and I suck at calorie counting and I am struggling to record what i actually eat on paper instead of the mental notepad I've used for years. Just wondering if anyone was using FitDay and if the program really does all that it promises as far as tracking progress and stuff. I haven't bought it- still deciding whether i should just buy a note pad instead LOL. any and all thoughts welcomed. pegs

Body for Life Forum Message by pegs (18 posts) at 05:28 PM
Hi thx for posting a reply. I didnt know there was a free version. How does that work?
Body for Life Forum Message by Forest Tech (123 posts) at 05:29 PM
I have used it on and off for quite a while now. It is useful when you get the hang of it. But I find it very time consuming. Now I just go by portions like BFL says and may periodically load my foods on there to make sure I am staying somewhat on track. The reason I stopped using it regularly was because I was concentrating too much on calorie consumption and was not varying my calorie intake from day to day. My metabolism was decreasing from too little food each day. Now the different foods I eat varies my calorie intake from day to day and i save the time of not logging foods.
I would advise using it for a while to get a feel for how much food equals how much calories.. but perhaps then just go by the BFL way. Just my .02
Body for Life Forum Message by blemt (168 posts) at 06:19 PM
I use Fitday as a compliment to the portion system. I don't worry too much about being ultra precise. I use alot of the presets, and don't find it a hassle to enter random things I eat along the way.
Fitday gives me an idea of overall trends in my eating.
To use the free version, just go to the website (FitDay.com) and register. It's web based, so you can't take it with you. But again, logging food at the end of the day is part of my journaling process.
Body for Life Forum Message by pegs (18 posts) at 09:49 PM
Thx everyone. I didnt even realize that i was on another website. I went the Fitday.com and registered. I had a real wake up about my eating. I am getting way more carbs than protein. Not a good balance at all and my daily calorie intake for today was only 739 Kcal. That is pretty bad. Well i guess i should factor in the fact that i woke up at 1pm. I am really trying and i think this webiste will really help me for next week. I have entered everything i own in the kitchen and will take it one day at a time. I feel kinda bad about having such a low calorie count but usually i just dont have an appetitie- i just love eating junk food. I never need an appetite for junk food. Wow this really is a lifestyle and I am excited about learning about myself and changing. thx again everyone.

Hey Gang!
It has been a very fast paced weekend. Sunny and 63 here in Denver. Not really a whole lot to report right now except, The Westin Hotel DownTown is vibrating with mountains of energy. Have done a LOT of talking to everyone. Champs new & old. Challengers from the cruise, UTC, The Arnold, etc...have met a ton of new people that are starting their challenge "Monday!"
I am rooming with Abb Ansley. We had dinner with about 20 old friends and ended up at the "Purple Martini" were we ran into about 100 other BFLers apparently starting their freeday early. It was great to see everyone having fun. Abb turned in early. I ended up at another party! I rolled in about midnight & Abb (being the great family man) was talking to his wife Lise. We told war stories until about 2a.m. causing us to over sleep for Saturday morning's opening event.
We have been busy... visting with friends. I will report the minute I hear who won the 2005- Million Dollar Challenge. After meeting everyone. I have an idea who I think EAS will chose....
Who do you think EAS is going to chose as the new Champ?
I will report when I hear...around 8 pm Mountain time!!!
JerryBraam

EXPO UPDATE:
This is a BFLer’s Heaven!!! It’s so cool to experience facial expressions, body language and look into people’s eyes - the "LIVE" experience.
THANK GOD I brought my fiddle!!! Russ Pendergrass and I are going to jam tonight (he brought his guitar)!!!
Everyone is totally AWESOME, friendly and informative!
Porter Freeman is the friendliest guy I’ve ever met!
In reference to the question about shipping Audio Timekeepers to Canada: YES!!! I have shipped them to Canada, United Kingdom, Thailand, Cyprus (Mediterranean Sea), South Africa, and Korea.
Gotta Run - TRAIN HARD!!!

Why expo?
BFL has always been black and white for most of us. I mean, black text and white background in the book as well as on our computer screens.
A lot of us are doing it "on our own" and some of us have a major lack of support from people close to us.
The videos are a great inspiration but like anything on TV, it seems distant and "in another world."
Being here in Denver at the Expo makes BFL "come to life!" To be surrounded by living, breathing, talking, laughing, focused, successful people in the flesh totally animates this thing called BFL.
It becomes "real." There is an energy here that cannot be defined.
I don’t expect anyone to read these words and all of a sudden, just get this major "vibe." But I will tell you this, my friends: You have chosen a path in life that will take you to places you never dreamed of. BFL is truly a family. You are part of this family.
It’s kind of like accepting your Saviour; once you do, you’re welcome into the Kingdom. Once you pick BFL, you are accepted and welcome. There’s plenty of room for everybody here.
If you haven’t made that call to book the Cruise, I’d recommend doing so today. It’s the next EAS "biggie" and you’ll have more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
Pete: I’m shooting video and I’ll get it up on my site asap once I get home,. . . . even though I already feel like I’m "home!"

EXPO STARDATE UPDATE, Captain’s Log (or however that goes):
Jam Session was a BLAST!!!
Watched Russell Pendergrass doing dumbbell bench presses this morning with 100lb dumbells in each hand, then tonight, he’s rockin’ out on the guitar like a madman!
Porter Freeman wanted to hear some blues, that’s how the whole thing got started. We made him "feel it" and then sent him home to bed (after he kissed his cat and dog). Nicole Heyrman and Brock were sitting there helping us sing, "Bye Bye Door County Cherry Pie," Kelly Adair and Michelle Lee were close by, Abb Ansley and Ken Young were hanging out, Marc Bennett strolled through as Russ and I were jamming on Louisiana Saturday Night (rock version), about 20 other Champions were coming and going, inspirational stories flying around left and right! We all started fading around 11pm so Russ put his guitar away, I loosened my bow and cased the fiddle, we all said goodnight and went to bed.
EAS puts on a hum-dinger of a ball! They have free Myoplex "on tap" and all the motivation you can handle. The staff is "top shelf" and the event is run as smooth as a swiss clock soaked in KY Jelly!
Tomorrow is going to ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have patiently scrolled down this thread reading every post carefully. My face was so close to the screen, if someone would've called my name I would've bashed my face into the computer. So can you feel how anxious I am.

Talking about Julie, I went and visited her grave Friday on the way up here to my daughters house in Virginia
It is a small cemetary pretty and old fashion looking, cute little church too. I never met Julie but spoke to her on the phone and thru e-mail. I felt like I was visiting my old friend, like we had known each other 4 ever. It was warm , sun out and a pretty day. as I knelt down by her grave, I touched the grass and The wind blew, I thought of what Stephanie W said, that it was Julie breathing a breath of Heaven and saying I'm alright. I told her I loved her and how we are all carrying the torch for her.

I'm posting for help!! I'm just finishing my 6th week and feel like I'm starting to spin my wheels, so to speak. I've noticed that I'm lifting a lot heavier in the gym, and running faster on the treadmill compared to 6 weeks ago. But my measurements arn't changing that much. The scale has gone down a bit, but hasn't changed. I feel like I've been fairly disciplined with my "dieting" but I stumbled a bit this week with the old sugar cravings. I actually ate fast food yesterday, which I NEVER do! My workouts are good, hitting my 10s. I'm trying to be patient, because I know things usually don't start really happening for most women until the 7 or 8 week mark, but yikes I've only got 6 weeks left and don't feel like I have made enough progress. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to quit!! Just wondering how others are overcoming plateau challenges. I'll post new measurements and photos tomorrow, but really no changes since last week.
PS. Yeah Seattle Seahawks!!!! Lisa

Harumph. I shouldn't help you since the 'Hawks beat the Skins. But I'll take pity on you. ;)
Go back over your last week of eating and enter the data into a calorie tracker. Fitday.com is a good one. Then calculate your BMR. Look at your intake vs your BRM requirements. You may, and I stress MAY need to add a slight amount of carbs to your first AM meal. As you add muscle during the challenge, you may need to up your calorie intake slightly. I found that a half bagel in the morning could do wonders.

Be Patient, You really were not that out of shape to start with.
For some people it takes more than 12 weeks to get the changes they want.
Keep pushing it will come.
Rod
Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1072 posts) at 08:44 PM
I'm not sure I can help, seems like you are making reasonable progress from your profile. Just a question- how do you know you are hitting your 10's? I thought I was , now on c4 and I'm still learning about intensity and effort, and learning about how to lift or push myself with my mind instead of my body.
I agree with Rod. Things change internally before visably, and you noted lifting heavier and improving cardio wise. Seems to me everything is going great, and I think BFL is a marathon, not a sprint.
I think Bill outlined the 12 weeks because a) it was time enough to make dramatic changes and more importantly b) it was enough time to break old habits and form new ones.
Success to You,
Yours in Health,
Kerry

I created a webcam video update for week 2 of C5. I haven't been on Tracker lately because I've been wrapped up with computer upgrade problems, but it's all fixed now. The video is a lower resolution than the one I did last week so that it will download much quicker.

I am so upset with myself because I missed 2 wo's this week. On Thursday night I wasn't feeling that well, so I didn't do my cardio last night I drove all the way to the gym at 8:45pm just to find out they close at 9pm. So I missed a cardio and a LBWO this week. I think today since I can't get to the gym I'll do a 1hr long FIRM tape that focus's on the lowerbody. Hopefully that will take care of the missed workouts. Should I also do another workout later on tonight for my Saturday cardio or will this mornings session cover it all?
Let me know.
Melissa
Body for Life Forum Message by nola (55 posts) at 07:18 AM
I've missed 2 this week as well...one cardio Thursday and LBWO yesterday. I did however spend all day yesterday moving furniture, so I think I will do my LBWO today and maybe a less intense cardio session since a HIIT and LWBO on the same day would likely wipe me out!
The FIRM tapes are pretty tough...and aren't they usually pretty long? I'd count Thursday as missed, and the video as your Friday/Saturday workouts.

Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (30 posts) at 07:26 AM
Best to play it by the book and just put it behind you and move on according to schedule. Don't let it throw you off course because feeling guilty about missed sessions could lead you to consider silly things like aborting/restarting the program. We've all done it at some stage for various reasons, just get back on track as soon as you can and you will still succeed!

I'm with Ryan. You can't do anything about the past, just the future!
Don't hurt your challenge because a couple of bumps hit close together. Just let them go and move on.

HOLY MOLY! I just finished the "FIRM Body scultping System 2: Maximum Cardio Burn Plus Abs". I couldn't do another wo tonight even if I wanted to. I'm have a hard enough time typing. I forgot how hard these things are!!! I really thought I was going to die.
The description for this wo is "35 min interval training segment, along with a 6 minute standing leg workout plus 6 minutes of super effective abdominal training." Perfect wo considering what I missed.
My entire body was shaking and drenched (I know TMI) by the time I was done. I think I may through this wo into the mix more often. I feel like I worked harder in this wo than I do with my HIIT on the treadmill.
O.K. I must go shower...assuming my legs can carry me up the stairs.
Thanks all
Melissa

Sounds yummy. Did the magazine provide nutritional content?
Body for Life Forum Message by Framed (108 posts) at 11:17 AM
the nutritional the magazine gave must be pretty rounded off as they give servings as 6-8.
261 cal. 30 g protein, 11 g fat, (not sure where they get the fat from other than the beef) 10 g carb
So this with your rice or bread makes a meal. I'm guessing their serving size wasn't the BFL palm size!

Yeah,it maybe wasn't right that I wrote one instead of the other, but it would be good to have a choice -to either use one or the other measure system.
