Thread: Is it unusual to gain? (155 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Edward (18 posts) at 07:56 PM:
When I started BFL, I scrapped the terms gaining and losing "weight" from my vocabulary. The Challenge isn't all about weight, it is about losing bodyfat and gaining muscle. Muscle weighs three times more than bodyfat. You're most likely gaining muscle weight and around week 8 (according to most BFL women I've talked to) you'll really start losing fat leaving you with some nice muscle. Hang in there and stay off the scale. If you can't, then trash it. Good luck, Ed

Thread: How important is the 6th meal (278 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Blondeambyshun (35 posts) at 03:36 PM:
What if you just raised the calories in each of the 5 meals, so at the end of the day the calories are the same as six meals.

Body for Life Forum Message by Rie (492 posts) at 04:37 PM:
What MM said...except nicer.

Body for Life Forum Message by Edward (18 posts) at 08:04 PM:
Blondeambyshun, The point michiganmike made applies to your question as well. Why not ask "What if you just raise the calories and eat one meal a day?" It's not about calories....it's about having a stable blood sugar level and engery throughout the day. Picture a roller coaster on a track and it does up and down three large hills. That is your blood sugar from eating how we used to...breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Now picture one that is on a track that goes up and down just a little, but six times. That is BFL and a stable blood sugar.

Thread: What's your resting heart rate?? (274 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (872 posts) at 11:20 AM:
My hubbie's RHR is around 40-45. He has been diagnosed as being bradycardic since he was in high school. I've told him if he were to come into our unit, we would have the code cart parked outside his room (our monitors alarm for anything under 50 beats). Having a low RHR is good because as Linda stated above, your heart muscle is strong enough to push out a large amount of blood into your vascular system whereas someone who has a very high RHR has a heart that working overtime to push out the same amount of blood. This can lead to hypertrophy (or thickening/growth) of the heart muscle. My RHR hovers right around 60-65 but when I go for long periods of time without working out, it bumps up to the very low 70's. To make sure you are getting your "true" RHR, you need to take it before you even get out of bed. Take it before you do any kind of physical activity, including the trip from your bed to the bathroom....LOL. My heart rate during the day fluctuates from 70-80's, depending on what I'm doing. But when I'm lying in bed and take it before getting up, it's much lower. Melanie = )

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (485 posts) at 11:24 AM:
Melanie- what is bradycardic? Is it bad? Could I have it too?

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (285 posts) at 11:47 AM:
As I've always said in my top ten BFL "dfinitions" PULSE RATE means a number between 40 and 220 that can be very, very good or very, very bad, all depending on what you are doing at the very moment it appears! Resting pulse rates I think can be like cholesterol rates. They mean something, but are certainly not useful for much of a marker other than showing that a person is in reasonably good or pathetic cardiovascular condition. Mine varies by 20 points depending on how much coffee I've had. So, to manipulate it to make me look good, I always go to the doctor first thing in the morning, with no coffee onboard and it's always about 55. I used to run with a guy who had a resting pulse of about 48. He was 60 at the time the unthinkable happened. He went into full cardiac arrest while running with his son, and literally dropped dead on the spot! However, he was one luck S.O.B.! Guess where he dropped dead? Right as he crossed the driveway of a fire and paramedic unit in downtown Wichita! You guessed it--his son ran to the station, alerted the guys who were just sitting right there in the break room, they came out with all their gear and rescuitated him on the spot. Last I knew he was still running.

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (872 posts) at 12:36 PM:
Reagiesmom, "bradycardic" is just another way of saying slow heart rate. Some people naturally have a slower heart rate than others. It's not necessarily bad. Besides, I think I would rather have a naturally slow HR than a fast one! Melanie = )

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (351 posts) at 12:49 PM:
Mine right now is 60, I suppose it could be a little less than that because I'm sitting at the computer typing and I've never taken it at a total relaxed state. I have a question kinda related to this. I have noticed that my veins are starting to bulge more, like near my wrists and I can really see a new one on my shin. I don't know if it's because my muscles are growing and pushing them toward the surface of my skin or if they actually do dialate a little when a person gets in shape.

Body for Life Forum Message by Reagiesmom (485 posts) at 02:52 PM:
I would like to know too, tinkerbell...My veins also bulge I also know other runners whose veins are rather prominent. I hope it is a good thing coz I like the way it looks. I am not exactly a SKINNY person though so I dont think its a lower body fat thing. I dont know.

Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (70 posts) at 03:29 PM:
Mine is 74 sitting here at my desk at work... eeek... I'll take it again tomorrow morning before I get out of bed.... O_O

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (872 posts) at 05:32 PM:
Part of the reason your veins are showing more because you are losing subcutaneous fat. When you have a higher percentage of subcut. fat, it's much harder to see your vasculature. I LOVE starting IV's on people who don't have a lot of fat on their bodies...much, much easier to have a successful stick. People have edema (swollen) and those who are overweight can be a nightmare to get an IV in. Melanie = )

As far as nutritional value, I believe they are about the same. I use the Egg Beaters, and my husband uses egg whites. I believe this is all in personal preference. Egg whites are cheaper...but I love the flavored Egg Beaters, particularly the Southwestern Style. You can create this blend on your own and save money. For me, I'm always on the go, but it takes just 5 minutes for me to make some Egg Beaters for breakfast! I love them! Jennifer

It works a lot better if you mix in the powder after you cook the oatmeal. I've tried it the other way and it's very nasty. I also add a tablespoon of peanut butter to give it more flavor.

Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (644 posts) at 11:01 AM:
I don't have a problem with the taste of protein powder. I actually love the shakes but when I mixed it with my oatmeal it was horrible. I like the taste of oatmeal and the protein powder made it so sweet tasting that I just didn't like it---don't think I could learn to. So, when i have oatmeal for breakfast I opt for a smaller protein shake to go with it (1/2 scoop powder to 4 ounces of water)this way I can get the right portion for breakfast of protein & carbs.

Body for Life Forum Message by bethkk (260 posts) at 08:56 PM:
The first time I tried it...YUCK! I decided to give it a second chance, and now I LOVE it! Mgbuffgirl is right...mix the protein powder in after the oatmeal is cooked. I use the Designer Whey Vanilla and add just a little Splenda brown sugar. I think it tastes great!

Body for Life Forum Message by rainy (57 posts) at 09:09 PM:
I buy my "protmeal" pre-mixed. Cytosport makes Muscle Milk Protein in a few flavors, including vanilla, brown sugar, and cocoa. I like the brown sugar flavor. It's 300 cals - 34g carb, 30g protein, 5g fiber. Oh, and if you have a thing against their Muscle Milk shakes, like I do (cuz of the aftertaste), don't worry - the oatmeal doesn't have it. ~ Jenn

Body for Life Forum Message by pk-rn (64 posts) at 09:52 AM: Muscle gain and fat loss
How can I tell how much muscle I am gaining? I have been all over the map so far with my weight but my body fat% has consistently gone down (from 34 to 31.2) in my first 4 weeks. I am trying not to pay attention to scale weight but what is really happening? How can people say they have gain so many pounds in muscle and lost x amount in fat?

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (227 posts) at 09:57 AM:
when you enter your info under your weekly progress, it will figure it out for you, it's some type of mathematical equation that I don't know. As long as you put in your weight and body fat the tracker will give you the mucle gain and fat loss.

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (227 posts) at 09:58 AM:
I sent you a pm of yours :)

Body for Life Forum Message by FitForGood (47 posts) at 09:59 AM:
If you click on your profile, above the weekly progress report is a paragraph that tells that information. Some profiles have that information and some don't - mine disappeared and I don't know why. Yours says you have gained 3.3 lbs of muscle and lost 6.3 lbs of fat. Good job!

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Head (52 posts) at 10:09 AM:
Here's the equation ..... the key term here is LBM (Lean Body Mass or amount of muscle you have) LBM = (scale weight - (scale weight X bodyfat%)) Comparing your LBM each week will show you muscle gains/losses.

Body for Life Forum Message by Edward (18 posts) at 06:04 PM:
Betagen is too expensive to not be using it correctly. Take it as the container says...3 servings a day, two scoops per serving. If you're going to use it, you might as well get your moneys worth out of it. Since I do my weight training in the morning...I take one serving in the morning after my workout (I wait an hour after cardio), one serving at mid-day, and the last serving right before bed. Lastly, take it on your free day. You need to keep your muscles saturated with the ingredients of the Betagen for maximum results(creatine, glutamine, HMB, and the other amino acids it contains). Enjoy, Ed

Yes, I have found an awesome fat burner in fact. It's actually a book called Body for Life. It teaches how to propery combine nutrition, weight training, and cardio for a 12 week program and if you follow it exactly you will have incredible results. Seriously though. I'm not a fan of "fat burners" and I'd rather spend the money on a supplement that works...creatine (Betagen to be more specific). That's my opinion.

Hydroxycut is really great. I use it the last 4 weeks of my last challenge. Really helped boost the metabolism and aid in muscle definition.

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (285 posts) at 08:02 AM:
Hey Casey! Hydroxycut Hardcore is similar to the usual lines of fat burners out there. It has more caffeine in it, which should help with the resting metabolic rate as well as workout strength and stamina if you time your taking it with your workouts. It also has the usual willow bark which is a precursor of aspirin, which helps thins the blood and get it to circulate into the areas where it can carry away fat better. I presume it also has appetitite suppressants in it, though I am unable to identify them from looking at the ingredients. Fat burners will help a little, just by revving up the resting metabolic rate. However, the best thing they can do for you is to give you more stamina and intensity and quicker recovery during your workouts, which indirectly helps both to burn fat and preserve or build muscle.

I am so thankful for a community like this. I am at 200lbs and 3 weeks into the challenge. I am considering ordering some Betagen, CLA and Myoplex Lite. Should I wait until I lose more weight before I start the Betagen and CLA? What kind of results do these produce? Is the Myoplex lite a meal replacement? Please help! Thanks AGAIN, you guys are priceless.

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (1039 posts) at 11:25 AM:
If you have the cash, I'd start the supplements now. I started Betagen when I was at my top weight and I believe that it really helped. It helped my upper body really lean out so I could concentrate on my junk in the trunk. :) I also used CLA but got a sore throat from it, so I don't use that any more at all. Personally, I don't think it's worth the money. But, others may have had better success with it. Myoplex Lite is a meal replacement. If you don't like Myoplex, just look for protein shakes that have equal or close to equal protein and carbs. Also watch the sodium on powders. Best of luck and keep us posted!

Can someone please tell me how you would use these, I understand the myoplex is a meal replacement, so why take whey, and when? Is it a protein, a carb, or also a meal replacement?? Thanks for clarifying!

Body for Life Forum Message by Edward (18 posts) at 01:47 PM:
Hi there,

I assume that when you are saying "whey" that you are talking about protein powder. Protein powder and meal replacement powder do two different things. The meal replacement does exactly what it says...it is designed to replace a meal and give you all the protein, carbs, fat and vitamins that you need for one meal. Use this as one of your six meals while following Body for Life. As for protein powder, it is exactly that...protein. Depending on the brand, there aren't many carbs or vitamins. A brand that I like called ProBlend 55 does have vitamins and a big dose of glutamine. Since I've been on BFL, the only time I really use the ProBlend 55 now is for EFL recipes that call for protein powder. I don't think you need to use protein powder but that is my opinion. You're getting all the protein you need for the day by eating your six meals. If anything, if you take Betagen or creatine, glutamine, etc immediately after you work out, which you should really consider doing if you're not already...maybe throw a scoop of protein powder into the mix. But even still, it is probably unnecessary. Stay strong, Ed

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (227 posts) at 02:53 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (228 posts) at 03:34 PM:
Basically I think of Myoplex as a 'meal', whey powder as an 'ingredient'. I use whey powder all the time. It's a matter of taste and personal nutritional requirements. Personally I don't like Myoplex shakes. Instead I will mix a scoop of whey powder in with some oatmeal that I've nuked in the microwave with more water than what you'd cook just oatmeal with. Mix in a little SF syrup or some stevia - that's nice and tasty.

It is tough. We are there with you. We came within 3 days of filing bankruptcy 3 years ago but did not. Created a plan, went to our bank, and they agreed to help. It has been tough but following the plan, and with real estate appreciation, our goal of only 2 mortgages and no other debt is in sight. One thing I was told last month by our tax accountant is that during her career of of doing taxes (the past 25 years or so), her clients that did the Monday - Friday type of job and nothing else did not have much after each paycheck. The clients that did more, creating a financial plan and sticking to it, by taking a 2nd job, by going outside the "box" and doing something financially risky, like we are by investing in homes for resale, are the ones that became wealthy. So, create a financial plan and stick to it, work your tail off by getting a 2nd or 3rd job, don't file bankruptcy, etc. If something comes up, try, try, try very hard to not spend money or get further in debt because of that something. You will see your efforts pay off, just as in BFL.

I've got an interview on Thursday for a job that I REALLY want! :-) The "problem" is that I'm a technical writer, and have been for about 7 years. I've never liked technical writing, but it pays well and you know how that goes sometimes.... :-( I've also got my own photography business that is going really well, but not yet well enough that I can commit to only it right now. The position that I'm interviewing for is neither a writing nor photography position; it's a Corporate Marketing Representative (sales, sort of). The expectation is to liase between clients and engineers to ensure they're on the same page. It's not a lot of sales (not commission-based), but more shmoozing (hockey games, golf, parties...) It really does sound like too much fun to actually be a job! I REALLY want this job! :-) I've already had two "interviews" - - one was a meeting with one of the managers over coffee where we discussed the job, the company, and my education and experience (or lack thereof!); the second was a pre-screening HR interview. So, I need help from anyone who is either in HR, marketing or sales who might be able to prep me for my interview. Potential questions? Scenarios? I think I can spin my experience as a technical writer and business owner to suit some of the needs of the position, but I really want to be well prepared for this interview, so any help is MUCH appreciated, even if you're not in HR, marketing, or sales! Thanks guys!

Thread: shock collars?? (96 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (227 posts) at 10:11 AM: shock collars??
anyone have one of these for their barking dog?? I'm looking to get one that's humane yet effective (citronilla spray etc..) any info would be appreciated as surfing the web has me more confused than ever.

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (351 posts) at 11:01 AM:
I have used one on my dog. I currently use a shock collar which is activated by sound. It's made by PetSafe. It has 3 levels and uses a special battery that you can only buy from PetSafe. They are sold at PetSmart and I think mine was about $80. If you are at all sensitive to your dog being uncomfortable, then this is probably not for you. My dog would make a yiping sound when it zapped him. I did loan this to a neighbor once for a crazy Jack Russell Terrier. The dog was zapped by it once and never barked again, he was so frightened of it, they never had to turn it on. I have to say that these collars are sensitive and you have to be careful not to leave them on while it's raining. The replacement batteries run about $8 for 2 and they don't last very long. My dad has used a system that emits a high frequency sound that only dogs can hear, he has had some success with that. I don't think it's a collar, it's attached to the kennel outside. I would recommend borrowing one from someone who owns one to see if it would work for you or not.

Body for Life Forum Message by wannabegreat (35 posts) at 11:03 AM:
We used the system that emits sound. It seemed to work at first and then the dog just started ignoring it. We have more success if we just kennel the dog at night.

We've had 2 complaints in a short time about our dog, Sergeant. He barks at the birds that live in our backyard (he was previously owned by a hunter and is a "bird dog"). Nothing worked and we couldn't have him inside all the time. We bought a shock collar, after much hesitation. It's made by Petsafe and has 8 levels. When he first barks, it gives on a Level 1 shock. Then, he has to bark again within a certain time period for it to go up to Level 2, and so on. It does have a safety shut off so that if he continues to bark his head off, it won't keep him shocking him, at say, Level 8. My husband tested it (he put it up against his throat and made a sound to activate it...it works on the vibration of the dog's voice rather than the sound so it's not activated by OTHER dogs barking) and he said it wasn't bad at all. The first time we put it on him, he did let out a tiny "yip" but we didn't hear anything after that. He wears it when he's going to be outside for any length of time. It's been a godsend and set us back around $70-80. Melanie = )

I have two very strong willed German Shepherds and I have used several collars. The Citronella collar does work well, if you are willing to purchase additional refill citronella A LOT. If it's a big dog, the collar can also clog up with hair and caked on citronella. So if you get one, get a good one. I have the traditional 'shock' collars too. Mine are remote control, so I administer the correction. If they are used properly they are VERY effective. And if they are used properly, it's not something you'd have to use more than a few times. My collars have a vibrate setting and a shock setting. I mostly use the vibrate setting now if I have to use it at all. Because my dogs have learned that if they get the vibrate, the shock is to follow if they don't stop the behavior that is undesirable. I would suggest doing some serious research on these collars before purchasing one. What kind of dog is it for? How old? What issues are wanting to correct? Depending on the nature of the issue, MOST issues can be easily corrected with obedience work and no collars at all. The collar that self administers the shock based on the dog barking can be a double edge sword. I had one on one of my dogs and she barked, so she got zapped. Well, the zap scared her so she barked again, hence she got zapped again. She didn't understand that the zap was caused by the barking. So she barked herself to death, and pretty much wigged out. We returned that collar ASAP. I only use the collars with my dogs in the field with their search and rescue work to have better control of them around deer, rabbits, and skunks. I use the collars out a need for their protection, not because I don't know how to correct the dog any other way. You can send me a PM if you want. One thing I know a lot about is DOGS.

Thread: soy protein (139 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (872 posts) at 11:38 AM:
Soy can increase the level of hormones in your body. Too much can have an adverse effect on your body. That is probably why you've heard it's "bad". But an occasional soy patty or shake here and there shouldn't be harmful. Studies have shown that when women started taking soy in large amounts, it screwed up their hormone levels, as it did with men. And now, new studies are saying that it's not as protective against things such as heart disease and hot flashes as once previously thought. Gotta love those studies....one comes out and says, "XXXXX", then another shows up later and completely contradicts the first one. Melanie = )

Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (443 posts) at 11:58 AM:
I have never heard about Soy screwing up hormone levels, but I have heard about cow's milk doing that because cows are loaded with so many hormones to make them produce such large quantities of milk. I didn't switch to soy milk for that reason, but I have heard of people who have taken their kids off of cow's milk for that reason. I switched because the prtein contect was higher and because I am somewhat lactose intolerant and have no adverse side effects from soy milk. I did read today that the FDA is taking back their statement that soy helps lower cholesterol. I was sad to hear that, but oh well.... everything in moderation. Rene'

Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (70 posts) at 12:05 PM:
Oh such sad news about the cholesteral... but then again I dont tend to trust the FDA much in the first place =P As for hormone pumped milk... thats why I buy organic ^_^ Happy Cows

Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (443 posts) at 12:27 PM:
Happy cows.... LOL Well I will continue to eat my soy regardless of what is said about it for now. I mostly eat it because I really don't care for the taste and texture of most red meat. Same reason i eat ground chicken and ground turkey. Just can't stomach the other stuff!

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (872 posts) at 12:43 PM:
It's the phytoestrogens found in soy that can have an estrogen like effect in your body. That's what I was referring to when I mentioned soy affecting hormone levels. We don't use soy milk on a regular basis (I use it in my protein shakes), but I do buy organic, hormone free, antibiotic free milk because of how much the family consumes. We also buy our meat from a local farmer here that doesn't use antibiotics or hormones and processes the meat by hand. This lessens dangers such as mad cow and everything associated with antibiotic, hormone-fed cattle. And in my opinion, it tastes better!! Melanie = )

Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (443 posts) at 01:59 PM:
Doesn't everything oragnic taste better?? LOL I just wish it were a little more affordable. But that's usually how it goes. Anything that's good for you and actually tastes decent costs more, right?? I haven't actually seen my body have any "estrogen like effects" from eating soy, but then being a woman, a lot can be attributed to PMS... LOL And since I still don't think I will be taking up eating much red meat any time soo, I will have to stick with my soy in order to get my protein intake up. Just can't eat chicken and eggs for all my meals. I've tried and when i do, I end up binging on all kinds of other foods. Gotta have my soy!

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (872 posts) at 05:36 PM:
I am slowly trying to incorporate more soy into my family's diet without overdoing it. They aren't too keen on the soy milk (the kids at least), but they LOVE edamame. The kids will sit down and chow through an entire container of edamame pods. I buy the fresh ones at Costco and they love them. I have tried things like soy crumbles (it looks like hamburger) in place of meat for tacos, etc. but am just not sold on the texture. I don't mind the soy milk and will even eat tofu if it's incorporated into a recipe well enough I can't tell it's tofu....LOL! Melanie = )

Thread: Sodium (104 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (872 posts) at 11:35 AM:
Unless you have problems with blood pressure, you are fine consuming around 2400mg (the guideline amount). If you eat mostly unpackaged, unprocessed foods and don't add extra table salt, you are okay adding some lunch meat or the occasional frozen dinner (such as a South Beach, Lean Cuisine, etc.). If you are sensitive to sodium, it could cause some bloating, but you shouldn't have to worry about adverse affects to your health. And if you drink nothing but water when you exercise, a little extra salt will help replenish some of the sodium you lose during your workouts. I don't add salt to most of my cooking because I know I get plenty through the foods I eat (cottage cheese contains a significant amount of salt, as does the South Beach meal I end up eating 2-3 times a week when at work). But my mom never cooked with salt so I'm used to eating my foods unsalted. I use lemon juice to flavor things such as veggies instead of reaching for the salt shaker. Melanie = )

Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (443 posts) at 11:38 AM:
There are so many other seasonings you can add if you need flavor rather than adding salt. I add garlic, fresh or dried to a lot of things. Oregeno is great. I never used to like pepper, but now I do. Dill is my favroite. Great on potatoes topped with cottege cheese.

For those in Canada, Presidents Choice makes a great pasta. It is in with the whole wheat, but it is white. We call it mysterious protien pasta. It has like 6g protien. It is their blue label brand.

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (85 posts) at 03:40 PM:
I think the Dreamfields pasta is really good. It's got a lot of protein and added fiber. Also Barilla makes a high-protein version that's really good as well. I don't like whole wheat pastas but I think these taste really good. The texture of both is a little "heavier" than regular pasta, but still very good. I served it at a party recently and no one realized it was not regular old pasta. Like everything else, you still have to watch portion sizes.... ~Eileen

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2321 posts) at 05:00 PM:
I eat organic wild rice pasta. Its surprisingly good. There are no other ingredients other than wild rice (must be wild rice glue holding in together). Its a yucky colour & funny smell, has to be rinsed extensively (seems too starchy otherwise). If you can get your hands on it I believe its a very wise choice compared to the low carb types JMO. Thudson - I get this at Loblaws in the organic section. They also have organic brown rice. They are both gluten free, wheat free, egg free, cholesterol free, sodium free & of course fat free. Nutrition: per 1 cup - 198 cal/44 g carb/4.8 g prot. I guess if you're looking for low carb not a good option but for good quality carbs these would be a good one.

Body for Life Forum Message by Robin78745 (42 posts) at 05:09 PM:

Body for Life Forum Message by fitnesscrazedmom (57 posts) at 07:57 PM:
I use Barilla plus. Its got 38g carb, 200 cal and 17 g. protein, that decent amount of protein for pasta. The best part is it tastes great!!! I love it. I add grilled chicken to bring the protein a bit closer to the carb count

Body for Life Forum Message by tinkerbell (351 posts) at 08:24 PM:
Hungry-Girl.com really likes these noodles. I bought some at a specialty market and I couldn't eat them, and I can eat almost anything. They didn't taste funny, it was the texture, hard to describe, but kinda slimy wormy chewy....nothing like real pasta at all. I think the whole package is 40 calories and it's a lot of noodles. I stick with the Barilla plus, it's the best.

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (85 posts) at 04:46 PM:
Yoga can be suprisingly strenuous, so I would think it would be better to do it on a cardio day. There are wide variations with yoga...some classes are "fat burning", some are more "strength" focused, so it is kind of hard to figure out where to put it in. Hopefully someone else with more yoga knowledge than me can give you some better input! Another class to try is Pilates. Also good for flexibility and excellent for the core. ~Eileen

Body for Life Forum Message by Robin78745 (42 posts) at 04:59 PM:
Like Nola said, Yoga can be strenuous. It can also be very mild and calm, it just depends on the type you are doing. I think when you take it depends on the strenuousness of the class you are taking. Ask the teacher of their class is a power/Ashtanga yoga class or a Hatha class. Ashtanga can easily be used in place of cardio (and don't let any yoga naysayers tell you otherwise until they go spend some time in an Ashtanga class), while Hatha is generally much less strenuous and can be used on your day off. Most gyms offer a more hatha-based class becuase it is more "traditional" yoga. Ashtanga will get you more flexible more quickly because it really heats your body (they use this goofy breath but it really does heat you up). Good luck!

There are several arriving in Orlando Saturday. But we don't sail until Monday. So, I have our travel agent working on a group rate for us somewhere. We haven't decided if we plan to stay in Orlando a night, or maybe two to visit one of the area attractions, or head straight to the coast. More info soon.

It will all be post on the cruise website as it unfolds.

We used this bag: http://www.ebags.com/mountainsmith/day_pack/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=3148 to put all over our snacks/food into. It's a really sporty, macho "fanny pack", although I wouldn't classify it as a fanny pack. It's got lumbar support and works GREAT on all the rides. You just push it around to the front of you when on the rides. We were able to put snacks, 2 cameras (one digital, one 35mm), 2 water bottles (it has holders on either side of the bag), full size sunscreen, wallet, etc. into the bag. It's comfortable to wear and because it doesn't sit on your back, we were able to also carry Camelbak's filled with our daily amount of water as well. This bag has gone with us to Disneyland for 5 days, SeaWorld for 3 days, and various other amusement parks and trips. You can put all kind of healthy snacks into it so you don't have to eat all your meals in the park. It helps with eating healthy in addition to saving a bit of $$$ over eating in the park. Which park are you taking for your free day? I worked at Disney World for 5 years and still visit often, have eaten at just about every restaurant.... You know you can also call Disney reservations, they are trained to answer a whole broad range of questions including special diet needs in the parks =)

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (872 posts) at 12:31 PM:
The best thing about that bag is that it's somewhat "macho" looking...teehee...so hubbie doesn't refuse to carry it at times. I have used backpacks in the past and really love this bag over any pack I've used. I was hesitant to order it, but once I received it and packed it up, I fell in love. And although it's not "waterproof", you can go on most water rides without worry things inside will get soaked. Melanie = )

I would definitely recommend having your free day in Epcot... definitely... the restaurants in the world showcase are fantastic, some of which boast their own world class chefs (such as Bistro de Paris).. all of the restaurants there are pretty authintic cooking, as they are staffed with that countries nationality. France (Bistro de Paris) has probably the best restaurant, dont go into the restaurant downstairs.. go behind it and youll see a little door with a podium, THAT is a nice place if you have a little money to spend.. it is of course some heavy French food, but the portions are kept in check (as any gourmet restaurant)... Mexico also has a nice indoor restaurant, overlooks the water ride and the Mexican pyramid.. it always looks like night time in there... Morocco's restaurant also has some decently healthy food, and some belly dancers ;-) Canada for steak... England for some super fatty (but very authentic ) British grub.... Japan has a tappanyaki and a sushi/sashimi bar, Germany has a buffet with your traditional German fare, Norway also had a buffet last time I ate there (like 10 years ago) so it might have changed, China also has a nice restaurant and you can order like a 7 course meal, pretty cool with all the steam baskets.. mmm... Anyways.. yea I love eating in Epcot. The food in Magic Kingdom is crap in comparison.... theyve switched alot of the food since I've stopped working there.. switching the old sandwich shops with McDonalds.. grrrr... but there is a taco place in Adventureland where you can get a yummy taco salad (just munch that shell sparingly)... also smoked turkey legs at stands in adventureland... god those things are good... hmmm... there is a sandwich place in Liberty square... Sleepy Hollow I think... they have a good chicken salad sandwich, pretty sure it was served on wheat.... there were two other restaurants with salad bars, one in Fantasy Land and one in tomorrowland.. but they have both been replaced with McDonalds =( I'd also give calling Disney reservations a call about dining in M.K. as its changed alot since I spent much time there... Epcot on the other hand... I'll go there to eat whenever I have the opportunity. =)

Free Day at Epcot. We went last year and I just thought why settle for Magic Kingdom crap food when you have all the choices at Epcot. Thanks again and I'll let you know how it goes when I get back on Saturday.

I'm writing from Michigan, where it's currently about 10 degrees fahrenheit and there's a snow cover. I read your report about doing your runs at night to avoid the heat of the day and thought, "Either this is a very old thread, or this person needs to see a psychiatrist!" Then, I went to your profile and I see you are down under where it really is summer! Now that I've had a good laugh at my own expense, let me just tell you that I think you're doing well, other than that you are tending to buy into some negative self-talk and are allowing it to upset a productive routine. BTW, I've been doing BFL for 5 1/2 years and it is my experience that loss of focus is THE MOST prevalent problem in second and subsequent challenges. The reasons are several, and here are some of them: 1. Most people don't take much time off between their first and second challenges, and so what they really do is to turn it into one 24 week challenge, which is just too long to stay focused, to avoid boredom, and to avoid overtraining fatigue setting in. 2. On the second and subsequent challenges, the amount of fat to be burned and muscle to be built is much smaller. When the goals are smaller, the ability to stay focused is more difficult not less. 3. Progress, due to reasons set forth earlier, is always slower in the second and subsequent challenge, and so it is difficult to stay focused and on task. 4. Doing the same routines at the same time, and eating the same food every day all the time, just really becomes difficult, to the point that intensity really flags in the workouts, and "reward nibbling" becomes common in the diet. The solution? The best solution to all this is to analyze it, figure out which of these it is; own it by writing it down and correcting behavior consciously and willfully, writing down the corrections, and finishing strong. Easier said than done, but certainly you can do it.

I agree that the bf% is the best thing to go by. You may not lose very many pounds because you aren't that big to begin with. I have heard that some people don't see very much difference in scale weight when they are not too far from their ideal weight. Anyway, I would get a good bf reading ASAP. I know here that there is a gym that will do it for you for $5 and another that does it free if you do their tour and fitness evalutation (it takes about a half hour and they do a complete weigh/measure and bf check and then tell you about their program. you don't have to end up joining) I only know this because I have worked at both these clubs over the years and they are both part of large franchises so you may be able to find something like that where you live. Hope this helps.

I just looked at your profile and its hard to tell from your picture but there you look very very slim. Your measurements say the same. What exactly are you trying to achieve? I copied this from your profile for goals: "I have always been very fit. My lowest weight, which I achieved last year, has been 118. I started pushing myself too hard around September, doing 3-4 workouts per DAY. The past month or so has been spent sleeping and eating. I think I just made myself too tired. Now I'm trying to get back on track." Can you put a sample of what your diet has been like or what its like now? At 1000 cal and protein very high I'd be curious to see what your diet is like. Not to sound like a "know-it-all" but I shudder to think what may happen to you as you get older with something like the above. I'll give you an example: In your 30's 1000 calories a day/4 - 5 workouts a day. In your 40's 500-700 calories a day/5-7 workouts a day. YOU WILL CRASH!!!! While I may be being sarcastic & snarky I feel as though I've earned that right because I come with experience of the exact same mindset that there is no such thing as "too skinny". Anybody that "knows" me here can attest to that. That scale and its horrific readings have been eating me alive. I may know all this & offer up the advice freely but have yet to amend my own mindset. I'm guessing but I think what you may be seeing in yourself is a "skinny fat person" and you believe by loosing more weight you will see a skinny fit person. Eat your damn food (good food/portions) do your absolute best workouts and who knows with the great little figure you've got, armed with some sound knowledge, you might put on 3 or 5 pounds and look like you weigh 115 pounds and be a COMPLETE KNOCK-OUT!!!!!! JMO I have been "eating my damn food". I want to make sure I'm eating ENOUGH. That's what I was asking about in my second post. I am an athlete, I always have been, but I am getting out of shape. Just because I didn't gain 50 lbs or more before I started the challenge doesn't mean I don't have a reason to do it. Was it doing all that working out? What were you eating then? I'm curious. But more importantly, if you're looking for diet advice list your foods. Tracey

Body for Life Forum Message by Joe (145 posts) at 12:18 PM:
Hi- Just my two cents here, so please take it for what it is worth. :) Have you taken a look at what your Base Metabolic Rate (BMR) is? in case you don't know that is the number of calories your body needs to just be you, not including any exercise (Simplified I know...) There are plenty of web calculators out there, but what I used to get started was what BFL.com had on it's site to get me started towards my goal, here is the link http://www.bodyforlife.com/exercise/calcalc.asp (don't pay attention to the bug in the page, it still works) Decide what your goal is then try to get your numbers towards the ones that the calculator gives you. It is only a guidline, but like you said, 1000 Calories is low.. when I put in your profile goal, it says, that you should be getting in 1270 caloreis if your gaol is to lose fat, 1524 calories if your goal is to lose fat and gain muscle and 1905 calories if your goal is to get bigger and stronger.. So take a look at this site to help you out. Also, try http://www.fitday.com to help you calculate your total calories of food in a typical day. Sometimes you have to customize the foods, but this site is a great help. Heck in trying to respond to your thread I just realized why I have been on my platau for the past few weeks, so thanks to you for helping me! (TOO many calories1!!! of course I am getting bigger arms and shoulders which as a male with an ego I like!) Good luck! Joe

Hi, nope I have no idea what my BMR is. I mostly want to lose fat, and gain a little muscle but I don't want to gain a lot of muscle. I use fitday. I've used it for years. Today, my eating plan looks like this" 8 a.m. - 5 egg whites, 1 c. oatmeal 11 a.m. - protein shake, small peach (class til 1) 1 p.m.(ish) - field greens salad w/chicken breast, 3 or 4 strawberries. 3 p.m. - protein shake, some kind of carb. (not sure yet) (cardio workout at 4.) 530 p.m. - chicken w/mixed veggies Don't usually eat after 7 so that will be it. Does that seem like enough, or am I missing things?

As a female who doesn't want to it is highly UNLIKELY that you will. I should add that the more muscle you do acquire, the more fat you will burn.

My favotite is a spinach omlette.Three whites, one whole, and lots of fresh spinach.I saute the spinach with pam and a little extra virgin olive oil, maybe a 1/2 tspn. top with a slice of smart beat fat free chedder.Have that with a 1/2 grapefruit and water.Very satisfying

Eve, I'm sure all of us here ( and elsewhere ) have been exposed to a) incorrect information b) indifferent friends or family, and many, many variations of that. If you embrace and enjoy a healthy lifestyle as offered and outlined through BFL... what is gonna happen is that all of these "doubtful" people sooner or later are going to have to wake up and acknowledge that you have accomplished something that is beyond them. Then your role becomes one where you can educate and encourage others to participate in mental and physical strength and health. I also would encourage you to use the scale and tape measure and photos as a reinforcement and encouragement, and refocussing ( as need be ) tool which is a good thing as opposed to something to be avioded :) Yours in Health, Kerry

Eve, I agree with Kerry, not only because he is right, but beacuse he is proof of what he speaks. Now, I am the first to say that the sclae is ONE tool in your arsenal to help you reach your goals. The tape measurer is the other. I have found that using those two tools together has helped me tremndously in gaging where I am each week towards my ultimate goal for this challenge. I have just finsihed week 7, and I am on a platau, but still seeing a postive change in my body, the problem for me is that I was underestimating how many calories I was eating, so I Am getting a little bigger and not losing any weight. While my goal is to lose fat for this challenge, my next challenge of 2006 is when I will try to get a little bigger. My long drawn out point, is that I wouldn't have known what was going on and what changes I need to make with out those tools, oh and one more a journal/website to document everything like my weight and measurements (I use http://www.mybodycomp.com, others will suggest different sites, whatever you use just be consistent). This site also gives you a % bodyfat. You will get to your goal, with help and encouragement from your tracker friends. It is a recipricol friendship here, we are pulling for you becuase it gives us hope in ourselves to meet our goals. Good Luck!!! Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (84 posts) at 12:33 AM: Looking for inspiration
I tried looking through some of the profiles, but there are so many. I'm trying to find transformations of people like myself to serve as inspiration. I can't really use the ones on the BFL website because the winners of the competition never seem to be that fat to begin with. (maybe because some of those people had to do more than one challenge and we don't get to see the real "before") I would like to see people's transformations that have gone from (for example) 40 or 50% bodyfat to say, 15% bodyfat. If I saw someone more like myself, it might inspire me. I'm sure there are some people on this site (or elsewhere), but I am having trouble finding them. Any suggestions?

men or women or both? jshelton always inspires me. That's the only one I can think of at the moment. Although, the www.pam-brown.com website was motivating for me. I don't think I want to become a body builder, but having a vision and a dream is helpful!

Thanks for reminding me about Pam. When I lost the weight before, she offered me some advice on the leanandstrong board. Unfortunately, that board seems to have really taken a turn for the worse and not many people seem to visit it anymore. Anyway, I looked at her site again and she is truly one of the great "transformers". Jshelton is great too!

Thread: at the end of day 13 (115 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ray59 (29 posts) at 12:34 AM: at the end of day 13
I'll be starting week three tomorrow. So far I'd give myself a 6.5 on a one to ten scale. The first week I really wasnt carefull enough about the food, but by the weekend and five good workouts I was starting to feel good.I started to get pumped and that motivated me.Of course you couldnt see it i n the mirror, but I knew there were changes after the first week.Last week I did great on the eating.Morning of day 12 I was down 6 Lbs. and one pant size.Believe it or not on day 10 one of my customers actually noticed that I had lost weight and said "oh yea,you can definitely see it".Now this guy had not seen me in about 2 weeks and had no idea I had been working out.Today is the end of my free day which I actually started saturday evening. Not too bad, probably put a little weight back on but it will be gone by day 14 definitely! I had spanish food for my first free meal and it got me sick.I ate too much, and my body let me know it immediately.tasted great goin down. But after seven days of egg whites, salad, cottage cheese, fruit, chicken breast, and lots of veggies,it just didnt sit right! As far as the workouts,I'm doin something a little different this time.Trying to really follow the program! I'm using less weight and really concentrating on "hold for one".I should make that my new screen name.I feel like a weekling at the ballys I go to since noone I can see is following bfl,and many of the guys are in top shape. Most people use as much weight as they can lift for anywhere from 2 to 8 reps.I start my bench press with only two 25lb plates for my first set of 12(level 6) and then 40 lbs. on each side for my fourth set of 6(level 9),then back to the two 25's for my set of twelve.Anyway, dont want to bore you with too much info but you get the picture.I'm starting off slow and getting the muscle to burn.Still getting some painfull abdomen cramps, but much less and I know they'll go away as I continue to excercise them. For cardio I'm also doing something different.During my first Bfl I did all my cardio on my basement treadmill. This time I'm doing a full 20 min of jogging around the padded track at ballys.Jogging on a floor is definitely alot harder than on a treadmill. My goal the first "run" on day 4 was just to not stop jogging for the full 20 min.no matter how slow I had to go.I did wind up doing some sprints though. Morning of day 12 I managed to do a bfl style workout on the track, but it was tough.I would jog really slow for level 6 and a light sprint for level 9.felt great. As far as pics,I've decided not to post them until I have a somewhat dramatic after photo.I dont like the way I look in my shorts people, thats why I'm on this program. After all,I dont get motivated to work out by just looking at pics of fat people in their underwear. Its the after pic that is the motivation.I still have the before and after photos of my first bfl three years ago. There wasnt a big difference between the two photos.I need to lose alot more fat before those muscles are going to show. But I can feel them! My weight tonight is 225lbs.My goal is 170.Got a ways to go.

When does everyone eat? How many hours do you plan in between? I'm just starting my challenge again, but my days are longer now that I'm up early for work, and up late to be with my girls and do house stuff! If I eat every 2.5 hours, I feel like it wouldn't fall in to the proper time slots (i.e., my fifth (dinner) meal would be at 4:30. I don't get home until 4:30! By the time I make dinner, it's at least 5:30 - - is it so bad to have a bigger block between meal 4 and 5?? Help! Here's my planned eating schedule: Meal 1: 6:30am Meal 2: 9am Meal 3: 11:30am Meal 4: 2pm Meal 5: 4:30pm Meal 6: 7pm

So like me all of yall that started on 2 JAN are beginning week 4 workouts today. I found my motivation a little lacking this morning and I really had to read all of my goals and look at my progess sheets to keep myself going. Then I remembered that I broke the 12 week challenge into 3/4 week mini challenges. I am on the last week of the "seeing the wife again" challenge so that kinda fired me up. If you didnt break your challenge down, break whatever is left down and see if it helps, I know it is helping me. IM OFF TO THE GYM, GO STEELERS.........

I picked out two outfits that I would LOVE to wear but that would look not so hot on right now (such as super low rise pants and a little shirt that would look great if i get rid of this BELLY!!) So I ORDERED the outfit...in a smaller size. that was motivation #1~ Then about a week later, the outfit came in the mail..that was motivation #2 ..the reminder of what im working for! THEN #3 was to hang that outfit over my dresser..everytime i get dressed I see that outfit that i want to wear and it keeps me motivated all day and sometimes i try it on just for fun and that is motivation all in itself when I see how much more I need to work to get these things ON! :)

I have a few motivations right now. First, I am a made of honor in April and no way do I wanna be a fat one squeezed in a dress that the rest of the wedding party, who are all younger than me with no kids, are gonna look hot in. The other thing that got me motivated to finally get on track with this challenge and stick to it this time was I moved from NY to Florida as of November 1, 2005. So no more being able to hide behind sweaters for 3/4 of the year and this weekend I went to Daytona Beach and that sure as heck reiterated that motivation to me seeing all the bikinis and realizing I want to be able to walk aruond like that without worrying about hiding 1/2 of me. Its a lot easier to get through 3 months of that nonsense in NY than have to worry about it year round now.

first time ordering supplements, PLEASE HELP!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1127 posts) at 11:27 AM:
Hi, Should you contact EAS, they will be very helpful in walking you through this. However, from what I understand... 1) Betagen- contains creatine and HMB. Creatine is substances which fills the muscle with water ( among other things ) and makes it possible to workout harder. HMB assists in muscle recovery and repair 2)CLA is a fat burner Myoplex lite is a meal replacement and contains a good source of protien and carbs. Success to You, Yours in Health, Kerry

ok I kept my membership at curves becuase I had just signed up before I decided to do BFL and i use it as an extra cadio a couple times a week (its paid for right?? Might as well use it). Well im sick so i didn't want to work out today but I was due to get weighed and remeasured today so I stopped in. The owner was there..she was about oh Id say 300 pounds!! How can you own a fitness franchise and be so out of shape?? Ok so she ends up being the one doing my measurements. She was holding the measuring tape so loose that i could see it just hanging off me. I told her I had been lifting weights (trying to explain why I only lost 4 pounds in a month even though ive been working so hard) So she says well look, you're bulking up you're thighs and your arms, leave the weight lifting to the men or you'll never get smaller. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS??? Then she did my body fat on the hand held thing and it came out the same and I told her I was sick and probably pretty dehydrated so its probably not accurate and this lady tells me that doesn't make a difference how hydrated you are. She knew absolutely nothing!! Im thinking about calling the curves people to complain becuase this is rediculous! I want my freaking money back! ARGH!! Ive been working my butt off and she made me feel like I screwed it all up and meanwhile she was HUGE herself trying to give fitness advice that she clearly had no right to give out (seeing as she knows NOTHING!) Phew..ok had to get that out!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by reneakleinisakson (443 posts) at 11:33 AM:

Kajole, I'm with you that's completely insane! It's really had to take fitness advice from someone who doesn't put it into practice themselves. I would call and complain. Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (669 posts) at 11:35 AM:
That sucks! Curves is a franchise - isn't it? - so the people at corporate may not care about much else than getting their money. Maybe you can sell your membership to someone else via the classifieds. Ask that lady if she's ever seen The Biggest Loser. Resistance training...hello?!? Then, give her the surprise of her life by walking back in there in 12 weeks and SHOW HER what weight lifting and proper hydration can do for a person!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (669 posts) at 11:37 AM:
One more thing: since she doesn't know much about fitness, I wouldn't trust her to do your BF measurements!

Body for Life Forum Message by Agent 69 (644 posts) at 11:40 AM:
Curves should be more particular about who they let set the example for their company. If I had a fitness franchise I wouldn't let someone soooooo out of shape work there in the first place, but for them to give ADVICE about fitness----hello how stupid is this???

HEY! WAIT A SECOND! I understand this person may not be the most knowledgable fitness guru around but to lump all 300 lb out of shape people together, you can't do that! Some of obese people have had serious health/mental issues leading up to their weight gain, none of us are in the position to criticize that! This would be similar to requiring a Football coach to play football, does it happen, yes. But some of the best coaches have never played a down in their lives! LOL Or the best phd in physics can't even plug in a toaster! So, I agree with the point that this person is neither trained nor motivated to give their all. I do not agree with lumping in all out of shape, obese individuals into that category just because of their size! Your friendly neighborhood obese man, Steve

Body for Life Forum Message by Nicabod (118 posts) at 06:24 PM:
Regardless of the size of the employee, she gave you bad advice. Now you know not to listen to her any more. I agree with those who said go back in 12 weeks and show her what's what. I don't really think Curves is the best place to workout, and I wasn't impressed with it the one time I went as my mom's guest, BUT it is a place that does encourage resistance training, and it DOES make someone like my mom (older, overweight, insecure) feel comfortable enough to begin exercising. I think there's a place for Curves--just maybe not in your BFL program.

Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (37 posts) at 07:32 PM:
Hey Steve, gosh I didn't mean at all to lump anybody together, was just refering to this particular individual. Sorry if it came across wrong. Im sure Curves is a great place for people looking strictly for a little cardio get your heart pumping sort of thing and would be great for those who really don't get any sort of activity during the day. Really what I was upset about was being told that I should stop using weights becuase it is making me get bulky (her words..not mine!) Im not knocking all curves by any means, but this one in particular does not have me real impressed with their fitness knowledge and the lady that I dealt with today was actually the owner :(

Curves not so good fitness together is awesome:) I work there so I am biased. Yes they are Franchise and I have heard clients say Curves is good warm up for me! I did not sweat at curves. There is a social aspect to curves that you cant get elsewhere and I think that keeps people there. You should have asked the lady if she would like to go for a run with you or work out with you. It is true there are people who have the knowledge and dont practice but this lady had little to no fitness knowledge and she was not fit on top of that. I would complain...

Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (84 posts) at 11:32 PM:
I have worked for Curves for 4 years and the owner of my clubs is very overweight. (so am I, but I don't work in the club anymore) However, she is very knowledgable and gives good advice. She just doesn't practice what she preaches. This woman you are talking about is not an example of all Curves owners. I know over a dozen of them and most of them are very intelligent and in shape. I have been to many conferences and the women there are for the most part healthy and good at what they do. Curves is NOT for people looking to build lots of muscle. It is designed to be a low impact, safe for all ages and body types, quick workout. I know sooooo many women that would never have worked out at all if it weren't for Curves. It isn't intimidating (or shouldn't be) and anyone can do it even if they are 400 pounds, have had knee replacements or are 90 years old. The woman you encountered is (in my experience) the exception to the rule and sounded like an idiot. Please don't judge all of Curves staff by one club and please call the corporate office to complain. And yes, it DOES matter if you are hydrated or not and most Curves employees know that. Personally, I wouldn't have even done a weigh and measure if the circumstances were not the same as the previous month because it can really skew the numbers. You should wear the same clothes (for measurements), it should be the same time of month, same time of day preferably and you should be in good health. (because the body fat meters we use are so sensitive to fluctuations in water) Curves has it's place in the fitness industry. It may just not be for you and it sounds like the club you go to needs some improvement. Sorry you had a bad experience.

You have removed your user name from the database so I can't PM you, so in case you have decided to continue to read, this message is for you. I am sorry to see you go. I hope you can get back into it soon! I let crone know of your decision and I have told her I will keep your spot open for now. Someone else had a bad week as well, that person has the flu. As far as self-sabotage, I'm the king of that. Just something snapped a few weeks ago and I admitted that to myself and at the same time said WHY. So now, I am trying to take things a bit slower but focus on my mind. Another suggestion if you are in the mood: I quit BFL a ton of times before. Not sure why, just the self sabotage thing. A year ago I joined a family oriented karate studio with my son. That has really helped me in slowly developing self-dicipline/confidence/and a bit of physical strength and endurance. Without the karate for a year, I would have dropped out of BFL again 2 and a half weeks ago! So, don't apoligize, maybe you could join an aerobics/karate class for a while, do it regularly and then try BFL again?!? Remember, this is a challeng to Build a Body for YOUR Life! Keep in touch and good luck! Your friend Steve

I am so excited that I completed the first week. I had no problems with the meals. There is so much to choose from I never got bored. I did miss three workouts because I got sick with an upper respiratory infection. I lost 7 lbs for the week!! I'm sure this is mainly water weight though.

on women the waist is normally just considered the smallest point of your midsection, most of the time a womans waist is well above the belly button and usually shrinks much faster than the fat around the belly. I just finished week six and I've gained a couple pounds, which makes me only 1 pound lighter than when i started. I know...I know this is muscle gain, but its still really, really frustrating not to loose. I'm still over 7 pounds from my goal weight: only one pound down, and seven weeks in. I'm doing it all by the book...very frustrating. Suggestions?

Body for Life Forum Message by Edward (18 posts) at 05:29 PM:
Most women that I have talked to say they really start seeing results at week 8. You're gaining the muscle, now all that is left is for the fat to melt off and you'll have an incredible transformation. I remember a woman on the bodyforlife.com guestbook saying "I weigh 15 lbs more than when I was on Atkins but wear the same dress size. The beauty of muscle, ladies!" HANG IN THERE! Ed

Stick with it, and you will see results!! Muscle takes up less space then fat, so you could weigh the same and still fit into smaller clothes!! You might be losing inches even if you are not losing weight!! It is also a good idea to keep track of your measurements and BF%. Hang in there!!! I wish you all the best!!!! Thread: Avoid the Four Week Freakout (173 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by ashtrash (439 posts) at 05:36 PM: Avoid the Four Week Freakout
So you haven’t lost "X" number of pounds.

But, wait, it’s already been 3 weeks! Shouldn’t I look like Cheryl Muhr already?!?

NO. You shouldn’t.

Hate to break it to you, but...you won’t lose 50 pounds in 3 weeks on BFL, and if you did, that would NOT be good news.

But I bet you are seeing changes, however small. I’m guessing your clothes feel better, you stand a little taller, you have more energy, you are losing inches, I’m guessing you even smile more (well, except right before your ten, where it’s probably a pained-help-i-think-my-face-is-gonna-explode expression...)

You are building muscle. You are losing fat. It takes time, though.

Forget about what you may not be seeing (a huge change on the scales) and focus on all the benefits you have gained so far. (Like, remembering hunger, or the taste of food, or what its like to really push past mentally-imposed physical limits.)

If you really feel like you are the anomoly here, that BFL is not working for you, examine your portions sizes, your workouts, your mental attitude, and your free day. But keep going!!

How much will you regret quitting when the end of your 12 weeks comes around? Or next year when you realize where you could have been?

Don’t get fooled by the Four Week Freakout - "oh no! I’m not a size 2! I’ve only lost (1,2,3,4, no) pounds! BFL doesn’t work!!"

It does work. But you have to, too. So work hard. You will see results. Just give it time and don’t quit!!

"Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever."

A little something that helped me that I read the other day on the hussmanfitness.org site: "Because of these significant differences in fluid-volume changes, some people will notice immediate changes, while others (and I would expect, most) will see only limited changes for the first 5 weeks or so. That seems like an awfully long time to wait, but remember, fat doesn't "spot reduce" - it comes off in sheets, like an onion. That's why you can estimate your overall bodyfat levels just by measuring at one or two sites. Fat isn't so exquisitely distributed that those estimates are exact, so if you're doing bodyfat readings at just one or two sites, your figures can jump and stall from time to time. The upper body (shoulders, chest, upper abdominal area) generally shows improvement first. But expect that the areas you've always thought were "too fat" will still look too fat for a while, even though you feel good, look "healthier", and can gradually measure that your fat percentage is going down."

Ok, I know I mentioned in a previous post that I have worked for Curves for 4 years. Well, since we moved 40 miles away, I have been working for the owner from my home via Gotomypc. She is selling two of her clubs so there won't be as much work for me. So, I am taking a temp position at a factory to get some extra money (have to have a way to afford all my supplements!) Anyway, the job is from 7:15am to 5pm and it takes about 45 minutes to get there. After work, I have to go straight to graduate school from 6pm-9pm. My question is: my gym is only open from 6am-9pm. Obviously I can't get there before work because I wouldn't have time to get to my job and I can't go after work because I will just be getting out of class when they close. I am in school T-TH so what am I supposed to do those 3 days for workouts? I don't have anything at home because my house is already overcrowded as it is. (6 people living in a 2 bedroom house) Any suggestions?

taylor76 said: Hello everyone. I hope you are all doing well. I have had a good free day with pizza and onion rings. I was wondering if anyone knows what a good grams of protein per day range would be under the BFL program. I have a background in power lifting. When power lifting I was trying to get 1.5 to 2 grams of protein for every pound of lean body mass. I am following the normal portion size rules for BFL but I don’t think I am getting enough protein. Maybe I am worrying about nothing. I would appreciate any advice.

Body for Life Forum Message by Edward (18 posts) at 01:16 PM:
I've been lurking for a few weeks and this is my first post. Hi everyone. taylor76, I am a strict follower of the Body for Life book. I also know that I need to be getting at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight a day. At my 4th week into the Challenge, I am down 5 lbs to 165 (I believe that is fat weight that I lost). I'm 5'10" and by the end of this Challenge I want to be at 175 lbs). It is easy for me to get enough protein during the day following Eating for Life. I calculate that I get roughly 30 grams of protein at each meal and as you know that is over six meals so 30 x 6 = 180 grams of protein. Now if I add a myoplex which has 42 grams of proetin as one meal of the six, which I usually do, that puts me at roughly 192 grams for the day. I'm not a pro so I don't want to tell you what you should or shouldn't do but I hope what I shared about myself helps. Stay strong, Ed

Hi everyone, Like many I've just started my first challenge and have a question on daily intake. Currently my intake looks like this: 1/2 cup oats 6 eggwhites 3 slices watermelon 1 and 1/2 cup cottage cheese 1 and 1/2 cup brown rice 2 cups frozen veges 1 and 1/2 can of tuna (6 oz cans) Now I've pretty much cal. at the end of a day's eating. And put everything through fitday...total 1882 cals. Now is 1882 cals okay? I'm big so got big fist/palm (290, 5'10) And how can I decrease carbs and increase protein? Fitday says that I'm taking in 53% carb/36% protein. Should I be concerned? I'm a bit wary of decreasing carbs as per energy levels to workout. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've been going seriously for two weeks and feeling good. And thanks in advance, sure am glad to have found this site

Body for Life Forum Message by RyanCTJ (57 posts) at 04:32 AM:
Hmm. The meals seem balanced enough, but I only see 3 meals there. You are meant to be shooting for 6 per day. Is that all you eat in a day or did you leave something out?

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2321 posts) at 07:07 AM:
Are you male or female? The name Marty makes me think male so does the height. If you're male I think your cals are way too low - I'm a girl and I eat that amount. How many meals are you breaking this down to? Get rid of the watermelon - its really a bunch of sugar and water (JMO). Substitue this watermelon with more green veggies and some actual meat - how about chicken breast?

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (285 posts) at 08:08 AM:
Protein sources look really good. You might need to up the quantities somewhat because you really do want to strive for a 40/40/20 ratio of carbs/protein/ and good fats. I would lose the watermelon and substitute a slow carb instead, something like yams for example. I assume that fitday has set your calories so that you'll meet your goals. If you find yourself running low on energy during the day, you may need to adjust your nutrition. I take it you are planning on six small meals a day? You might want to make one of those or even two of them a high quality shake like Myoplex.

Hi everyone thanks for your responses. Sorry, I should have mentioned I'm a girl built like boy - no seriously Anyway thinking about it sometimes I do get low in energy I've changed my sleep schedule for working out (still adjusting)..so thought it was purely that Perhaps it's actually of combination of both eating & sleeping patterns so how about the following - Here's my revised breakdown Meal 1 1/2 cup oats 6 egg whites Meal 2 1 1/2 apples 3/4 cup cottage cheese Meal 3 3/4 can of tuna 1 cup rice 1 1/2 cups veges Meal 4 1 1/2 apples 3/4 cup cottage cheese Meal 5 chicken potatoe 1 1/2 cup veges Meal 6 1 portion yoghurt 3/4 cup cottage cheese For meals 2,4,6 I'm trying to have a fruit carb for convenience but, I'll mix it up with another carb maybe a potatoe with cottage cheese. I think I'll also been a bit scant with my tuna measurements so upped those portions. So what do you think? Thanks so much to everyone - really helped me out in getting this meal thing right. Cheers Marty

I'm just starting week 10 of my first challenge today and for the first time, I didn't lose any scale weight last week. I've lost 15 lbs of fat so far and gained 4 lbs of muscle. I started taking a fat burner last week and was expecting a miracle. How long does it take a fat burner to start working? If I've plateaued, how do I break through? Thanks!!

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (285 posts) at 07:09 AM:
Congratulations on the progress so far, Renee. Fat burners start immediately working so far as the appetitite suppressant factor is concerned. So far as the rest of the effect, today's fat burners that do not have ephedra in them are so mild compared to the old ephedra based ones that they really don't do all that much. Mostly they have caffeine in them to rev up your resting metabolic rate, but the change is quite subtle and you really may not notice much. Bill Phillips wrote a classic article for Muscle Media several years ago about fat burners. He said that in a twelve week challenge, if you used the fat burners throughout, you would probably expect to only see a pound or two difference. He did not recommend them. I used one throughout a challenge in 2004 just as an experiment, and I found that the main effect was to give me more energy and stamina during workouts, which indirectly helped me to keep and maybe even build a bit of muscle though I was actually losing a fair amount of fat at the time as well.

If you like using your crockpot I have a cookbook you have to check out!! Fix-It and Foreget-It Lightly: Healthy, low-fat recipes for your slow cooker by Phyllis Pellman Good. Not every recipe in it is BFL compatible, but a ton are and they all sound so good. Plus tons of the recipes would be a great way to eat "healthier" on a free day without giving ANYTHING up!! I am making a recipe from the book tonight, or rather it is cooking as I type this. I put an entire chopped onion in the bottom of the crock pot. Then I dipped 6 chicken breasts in a mixture of orange juice concentrat, marjoram leaves and nutmeg. Then poured the remaining conconction over the rest in the pot. It is supposed to cook on low 6-7 hours. Then I have to add 3 granny smith apples chopped up and cook for one more hour. I am so excited to eat this!!! There are tons and tons of recipes that sound fanstic in there and the book is seperated by poultry, red meat, seafood and veggies.

Wow reneakleeinisakson. That recipes sounds fantastic. What a combo of flavors. Agent. Sorry to hear you went to all the trouble and then had to make dinner. I made a dinner from the Power Foods books. Will write it up tomorrow if it tastes good. It was easy. I also made a lasagne from COOKING LIGHT last night. It was really good. It seemed like an alfredo. But it was low fat. I'll write it up tomorrow. It too was easy. Kids loved it...big bonus!

I sometimes add instant coffee to cold soymilk and shake it up for an instant latte. Tastes great with just a little Splenda added.

Last night I just threw some stuff together and it came out really well. It is not a "complete" meal, but with a chicken breast it would be terrific! Here it is: one can low sodium condensed tomato soup 10 ounces light soy milk 1 cup fat free cottege cheese 1 can diced tomatoes with onion and green pepper minced garlic to taste Boil everything together and the cottege cheese will dissolve/melt about 90%. You could add more cottege cheese to up the protein level, which I may try next time. It was terrific! I haven't been on the site since last year. I just logged on, and now we have to pay?? Whats with that? Are you guys paying for this? Do you really get more out of the site if you do? I have no problem paying as long as I know its worth it, this site and everyone in it is one big happy support group. Thanks!

I don't pay. I think you only pay if you don't want to be assaulted by the obnoxious ads. I learned to get around that by turning down the sound on my computer before I hit this site. And I only occasionally have to reload the page if there's a particularly nasty *blinking* ad that pops up.
