Thread: Why does my proatmeal taste horrible? (202 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (174 posts) at 04:47 AM:
I use the recipe in the EFL book and just add a little sweetener. I really like it and so does my husband. I usually add sweetener until it tastes sweet and choclatey. I guess you just have to experiment until it tastes the way you like.

Hey gang! Here are things to consider: 1) Never put dry powder into hot cooking oatmeal - it will not dissolve! Don't do it unless you like clumpy protein powder nuggets in your oatmeal... 2) Always mix the protein powder up with water before adding to your oatmeal 3) Make sure the oatmeal is 95% done cooking before adding the protein mix, because sometimes cooking protein mix too much makes funny things happen. 4) Make the oatmeal as directed, with a little less water than normal, because you are adding more water with the protein mix. 5) Add Splenda to taste 6) Try a little bit of UNSWEETENED soy milk to add a little creamyness. Keep in mind the total calories... 7) Frozen unsweetened berries always make oatmeal more exciting! Vanilla protein powder is more versatile, since you can cook oatmeal with bananas, berries, raisins -- just watch the overall calories and portion size if you add this stuff. Hope that helps... Kathy, when you come over to our place I will cook some up for you to try... Good luck!

I will second. The first time I tried I hated it and like many of you couldn't eat more then a few bites. I don't even remember what possessed me to try it again. But from that time on I am hooked and LOVE the stuff. I would even say I am a little addicted to it. and eat it all the time now. And it is sooo quick and easy to make.

Any particular reason why you wouldn't raise the weight?

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Head (58 posts) at 09:56 AM:
Switching from barbells to dumbells ... or vise versa .... Go heavy on compound movements ... try 5 sets of 5 reps at 85% one rep max. German Volume Training ...... the first couple of weeks you will feel like you've been in a auto wreck from the soreness. To shock the muscles, you really have to try new things, and make sure you push yourself way past what you "think" you can do. Hope this helps.

Take your Betagen with water. If you are skinny and aren't worried much about body fat and you really want to gain mass...do as Bill Phillips says in the BFL book: Add an extra carb to the first three meals of the day.

It does both for me - builds muscle and reduces soreness. I don't know how intense your workouts are, but if you aren't getting very sore, it's probably not intense enough. I am about halfway through a bottle of Betagen and have seen great gains in my muscle. When I'm done, I think I will switch to using Phosphagen Elite and Muscle Armor together.

Body for Life Forum Message by morpho_veja (58 posts) at 12:57 PM:
Thank you for your reply.....was getting worried nobody wanted to give me advice. I know I should be sore I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I am going slow and lifting as much weight as possible, I get sweatty and need my min rest but I really don't get very sore the next day. This week I have begun adding additional excersises I did the UBW it made a little difference. Tonight I will try LBW and plan to adding some additional things to that too.....we will see. I really think I am hitting 10's so I am not sure.

Body for Life Forum Message by stepor (81 posts) at 01:16 PM:
I ran out one day so went to GNC and all they had was Phosphagen Elite on sale. I used that for a week til my Betagen came in. During that week, my soreness went away the day after (or at least almost). When my Betagen came in, I switched and my soreness came back. Now I use Betagen on cardio days and phosphagen elite on lifting days. Much Better for me!

I read the thread about Flax Oil and helping with dry skin so yesterday I bought some and I only took it twice yesterday and once this morning before breakfast.  I got really dizzy.  I had to leave the gym because of I thought I was going to pass out.  Do you think it could be from this or a coincidence of a virus or something.  ANyone else have something like this happen?

I took Flax Oil for about a week and swore it made me feel weird. It's been awhile so I don't remember exactly HOW, but it was strange enough to make me stop. It may have been something else, but I've been afraid to take it since...though I saw the thread on dry skin and decided to try it again only to find that I had thrown out my bottle. I'll be interested to see if anyone else has had any issues.

Thread: What a DEAL!! (36 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by BGrego (9 posts) at 05:04 PM: What a DEAL!!
I found a great deal the other day when my wife was out bargin shopping at the local Big Lots. She called me and asked me if I drank the Myoplex Carb Sense RTD's, I said no but would be willing to try them and asked why. She then told me they had about 50 of them there for 99 cents each! I told her to grab as many as she could fit in the cart because that was a smokin deal for the RTD's. Now most of them were the Dark Chocolate but I don't mind, they actually taste good. I think I found a great deal, and am gonna keep my eyes open for more. I don't think you can beat 4 bucks for a 4 pack of Carb Sense RTD's since I saw them at the health stores for alomst 12 bucks! Also I tried out the Body for Life RTD's, not bad, a little high on carbs and low in protien but tastes good and fits the budget a little bit better than the box of Myoplex. What do the rest of you think about this product? Has anyone else found a great deal online or at a favorite national store? If so please post some info.

Okay, to add fuel to my fear fire, my husband just told me we will be renting a car at the airport to use for the week. HELLO????????? We don't speak or read Italian. We'll be landing at 6:00 pm so I assume it will be dark by the time we actually get the car. How the HE77 are we going to find our way to the hotel? I'm a little freaked right now. He thinks I'm nuts. I'm usually very easy going but this is getting me nervous.

have a great trip! ive been to europe many times and lived in italy for a while. you have to go to Taormina, its the most beautiful city in sicily. my husband and i were there in april for our honeymoon and we rented a car. it was great but terrifying. if you dont know the roads and the way europeans drive i wouldnt reccomend it. my husband is an italian citizen, and we still got rearended by a trolley in milano, 2 flat tires on the autostrada by cinque terra, had to pay 500 euros for a new tire!, we got soooo lost so many times, but it was allll worth it, seeing italy and sicily by car is like nothing else ive ever done. just be careful and make sure you get ALL the insurance that the rental car company offers! we thought we did and ended up being charges 1500.00 4 months after we were there because of some issue with the car, we disputed it with the credit card company and didnt end up having to pay but it was a nightmare! if youre getting in at night i reccomend finding a hotel VERY close to the airport, driving at night can be scary if you arent used to it over there. alexis

Body for Life Forum Message by ICU_RN (875 posts) at 12:30 AM:
I had flashcards by Netter that were amazing. I received an "A" in my EMT-B class, an "A" in my A&P I, and a "B" in A&P II, partly due to those flashcards. They helped me memorize the bones, muscles, nerves, tendons, etc. and their insertion sites, origin, functions, etc. Netter does fabulous artwork and is well known among medical/nursing students for the graphics. You can type it in at Amazon and the flashcards should come up. I am so excited....I am going to once again work side by side with Paramedics and EMT's (well, sort of). I get to ride along with Careflight now that they have a 3rd seat in the helicopter. I'm thinking of doing flight nursing per diem once I get another year in with the ICU. Good luck with your EMT class! I loved mine...that's where I really knew I wanted to work in the medical field. I didn't go the Paramedic route, because frankly, getting paid $34,000 a year to start to risk my life just doesn't do it for me. I make $20k more a year than that and although what I do is dangerous, it's not nearly as dangerous as being out on the road. With the flight nursing, I can satisfy both my cravings....the desire to help people and the adrenaline I thrive on when it comes to being first on scene. And above all else, NEVER, EVER forget "BSI, Scene safety" upon starting a practicum or check off...lol! I almost failed a check off because I forgot to say those stupid words! Melanie = )

I will certainly check out the DOT site. thanks for the great tip!

Body for Life Forum Message by Daaang Girl (87 posts) at 06:39 AM:
OK, I'm sure you already know this, but your book has a coolio website with it. About the same as the website I suggested about. In the front of each online chapter is the DOT objectives, so your book must follow those protocols. Are you planning on making emergency medicine a career? I was very close to going into the nursing program for the money, but decided to follow my heart into EMS instead. My personality fits in a LOT better with the route I have chosen..lol. (medics are an odd bunch, to say the least) Each person has their own reasons, but it's a great field that needs more people.

Body for Life Forum Message by SupaFreak (1044 posts) at 07:03 AM:
I would love to work as an EMT, but not as a Paramedic. Needles scare me. hehe! Actually, I live in a very small town and our fire department is primarily volunteers, so I may pick up a crew night and see how that goes. I think I'll really need EMS in my routine to keep up on my skills. I wanted to become an EMT because my search and rescue group doesn't have a medical person, and we need one badly. I work in an IT field right now and can't complain about the money, so unless someone is paying EMTs REALLY REALLY WELL, I can't change careers right now. I will check the website for my book. Thanks again!

I am a certified teacher, and am trained through the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital as a Academic Language Therapist specializing in Dyslexia. I have seven classes a day of 3rd through 6th graders in which I administer therapy for the "dyslexic tendencies". I still have a lot to learn, but I know that what everyone has said previously is correct!!! I have a five year old that is reading wonderfully for her age, and she still will begin on the left side of the page. I would suggest to continue to be as involved and READ READ READ with him. Talk to him about the books that you are reading, and point to the words as you read them. Have him point to the words with you, and discuss that the words are written from left to right. More than anything though, don't worry, and don't start being overly concerned until at least second grade. Make reading with him FUN FUN FUN, and don't let him see your anxiety. Please feel free to email me. Thanks

I do appreciate all the responses. While I was married to my children's father, we are now divorced and I am finding that I really knew nothing about this man. He is estranged from his family and the information he did tell me about himself and his family I am slowly finding out was/is incorrect. Clearly, we are not on talking terms and never will be. So I have very limited history on my children's father's side. What I know is not reliable. I have no clue if anyone in his family has dyslexia and I don't even know if he did. It certainly wasn't something we discussed. Funny how you think you know someone. Yes, my situation COULD be a movie. I think because of this, I get a little hyper-sensitive about "things" that might be wrong. I appreciate all the responses and excellent information! I KNEW you all would help me! ;) Teresa

Well we've got some doozies and I'm sure there's worse than this but can't think - this thread should probably be something we all respond to on a daily basis. Or at least for me, ha, ha. Steve's going to the grocery store for me; why I subject myself to this I'll never know because without fail he'll come back without the most important item. Okay, one day I needed canned tomatoes. Here's the conversation: me: where's the canned tomatoes? him: they didn't have any? me: what do you mean they didn't have any? him: exactly what I said - they didn't have any? me: how can they not have canned tomatoes? him: I don't know they just don't me: there's no way that they don't have canned tomatoes him: Trace, no matter what you say to me its not going to change the fact that they don't have canned tomatoes Next episode - the missing item is brown beans as in Libby's deep brown beans - everyone knows them right? me: where's the beans him: they didn't have any me: c'mon, get serious him: I am serious - they didn't have any me: Steve, what the hell are you talking about a grocery store always has brown beans him: well this one doesn't me: what is with you? first they don't have canned tomatoes, now its brown beans - I know for a fact that that they have shelves of them in different "flavours" too - its a SUPERSTORE for gawd's sake him: quit yelling at me, I can't help it if they don't carry every single item of your needs me: do they have milk & bread? how about eggs I was so frustrated. So of course I've got to be right - aren't I always? I called the store - "hello grocery store, I know you're going to think we are totally retarded but could you check your shelves for canned tomatoes & brown beans". He comes back to the phone "yes ma'am we do". I ask him how much "about 8 feet wide & 3 shelves tall". Okay thanks, one more thing, do you have milk & bread? How about eggs? "yes ma'am, we do". Thank you so much, goodbye. We go to the grocery store. He picks up the Libby's beans & shows me on the label the ingredients - WHITE BEANS!!!!!!!!!! aaaaarrrrrrghhhhhhhh We still argue about this and I bet this happened at least 3 years ago. I win this one right??????? Oh, & hows that for length? A record breaker?

The most ridiculous argument I ever had actually ended the relationship! I get a phone call from bf waking me up from a deep sleep in the middle of the night (he lives across town). He tells me he has a low grade fever and will I please bring him a thermometer? I said "low grade? How low grade?" Turns out his temp was 3 degrees below normal (95 something). He thought if your temp was LOWER than normal it was a LOW GRADE fever. He went on and on and begged for me to bring him a thermometer. I told him I would gladly get up and get dressed and come but if I did so it would be to drive him to the emergency room (read psyche ward) because it did sound like this was quite serious (I know I'm a sarcastic bitch). I ended up having to hang up on him. And this was after knowing him 10 years and dating (him) on and off the whole time!

Well a couple of months ago, his pie plate dissapeared. He asked me repeatedly if I had taken his pie plate. I swear I did not. When he asked me I looked so guilty because It was so funny and I couldn't stop laughing. I mean he was really upset about that missing pie plate. To this day he says, "Common you can tell me the truth, I won't be made. Did you take the pie plate?" Linn

Usually I would be out in the pasture working on fences, barns, shoveling poo etc. but on this particular day it wouldn't quit raining from the moment we woke.So she had her normal things to do, clean house, wash clothes, etc, and I kept following her around, pestering her to let's go do something. When I suggested to "Let's go out and shop(which we don't do well together)she unloaded on me about the reason I wanted to go shop is because I was bored and normally wouldn't ask.Well it got so bad I had to go sit in the barn with the animals to cool down. When I came back in, a couple of hours later, she handed me a note suggesting maybe we needed to live apart but at the same address. When she asked if I had anything to say, I asked how she would handle it if I started bringing women over if we lived apart.I almost was pummeled that night. The funny thing is that we when got married we flew to Vegas 10 years prior because it was raining and I couldn't work on the property at that time. And she always kids about the fact that we got married because it was raining and I had nothing to do.

oh UGH! I had this bf once ... we argued about the most retarded stuff... mostly about him wanting me to be more like his mom.. (gee I wonder why that one ended).. So I was fixing dinner one night and he asks how long its going to take... I say about 30 minutes, he's like, "why is it going to take so long!?!" I was making fresh green beans, so I explained that they needed to be washed, trimmed and then cooked til they're soft.... he freaks out and is like "It never takes my mom that long to make green beans".. by this point I was so fed up with not being like his mom I just blurted out... "No shit! Your mom cooks her vegetables from a can, in the microwave!!" ...he didnt get that there was anything wrong with that.... o_O

Matter of fact, so deep there is no speaking in this house at the moment. I'm so mad about this recent "tiff" I can't even gather my thoughts to write about it - maybe tomorrow. You know what really pisses me off? You're not gonna believe this. I guess you've gathered we're arguing about grocery bills. Well I'll fix him I thought. I dig this old & I mean old tough roast out of the freezer for HIS supper tonight (not my supper), make some kind of gravy concoction, throw in a variety of vegetables, put it on about 275 degrees for about 6 hours - could care less about him & his complaining nor his supper. Smells a bit yummy I guess, take it out & just taste it. IT WAS FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!! There take that you stupid ***hole!!! I sure showed him didn't I?????? What made me so mad is it was supposed to taste like freezer to show him we do have to grocery shop. I had spinach salad & dry turkey breast for supper - yum, yum. Then he ate my butterscotch ripple ice cream which he "hates" so much. I'm getting madder by the minute.

My husband is really tall and he has really long arms and every night when he pulls out the dental floss he pulls out a whole arm's length. I am not kidding it is about 2 1/2-3 feet long. Who needs that much dental floss? It drives me nuts because I buy expensive dental floss, Glide. Whenever I mention it he just becomes defensive and says he needs it all and to leave him alone. I hate to complain because I know that some husband's don't even floss their teeth - ugh! But it really bugs me.

LOL The pie plate just reminded me of this ongoing argument (going on 10 years now...been married 11) We had moved around a few times, when we were first married and I had done most of the packing/unpacking. During one move his beloved red baseball cleats came up missing. (it must have been off season when we moved or something) Last I remember they were in the locked outside closet with his other gear. He swears I just hated him playing baseball and I tossed them. RIGHT. Because I hate him playing. Like its the cleats fualt. And I LOVE to waste things. He was gonna have to get new cleats, to replace them, and that benefits me how??? I'm sure I just thought"oooh, if I lose the special shoes, then he'll just stop doing what he loves most in the world. Yes, brillliant!!" He still insists I threw them out to spite him. His response was always, "whatever you say dear!"... which would infuriate me even more. I mean, what's a relationship without a make-up s*x, right? So we'd argue about not having arguments...which would be the highlight of my week believe it or not. We were together 10 years...can you imagine the boredom? The following is from a lady who moderates a Body for Life Women's board (some may have heard of her...Skwigg?). I respect the advice she has to offer because she does her homework and then some. This is some of what she has had to say in the past about soy protein: Isolated soy protein powders can have a huge impact on estrogen levels. We've had women here who've suddenly quadrupled their soy intake and experienced bloating, hot flashes, nausea, and breast tenderness in addition to not losing any weight. After seeing a doctor, ruling out pregnancy, and eliminating the soy shakes, all the symptoms subsided. Bodybuilders tend to avoid using large amounts of soy protein powder because of the estrogen issue. Male bodybuilders in particular run from soy protein like vampires from garlic. Bumping up your estrogen levels might be dandy if you're a post-menopausal mall-walker, but if you're into bodybuilding and fitness and trying to get ultra lean, it will set you back. Estrogen is a fat storage hormone. It's the reason women naturally carry more body fat than men. Ponder what increased estrogen does to a woman's percentage of body fat during puberty and pregnancy. You don't want any of that going on while you're making an effort to build muscle and get lean. :-) It's not that soy itself is evil. I use plenty of veggie burgers and soy products. It seems to be large quantities of the isolated soy protein powders that cause problems. Renee

I'm really struggling with this! I know what to do its just doing it. I was contemplating joining weight watchers. My friend has done really well...I thought I could do it and still adhere to the bfl plan. I'm just thinking it would help for the support. I thought for $10 week it may be worth it. I've tried to get friends to help but it doesn't work very well. Any thoughts on this? I'm such an emotional eater!

Body for Life Forum Message by reagan123 (120 posts) at 08:05 PM:
Here's my .02 for what it's worth. I think weight watchers is a decent program. I know some people who have lost weight doing it. The ploblem I think you'll run into doing both is that WW uses a point system. Alot of good BFL friendly food seems to sit a bit high on the point scale. It may help you, but I would try to just stick to the BFL plan. The more you try to do other stuff, the harder it will be to stay on track. Good Luck.

Body for Life Forum Message by Lavender (6 posts) at 08:06 PM:

I like the core program for people better than the points but both can work if you make lifestyle changes

Body for Life Forum Message by DESIRA Bull (33 posts) at 09:36 PM:
We have a group at school (most of us our weight watchers drop outs) We decided after spending hundreds of dollars (some of us are over a thousand) for the years, that it all still boils down to making a plan and following it (tough for free spirit musicians like me) The core plan (where you don't count points) can be similar to the BFL eating, as there is an approved food list. One weight watchers leader I had (the best one- one who lost 100 lbs..) always encouraged us to eat what she called the "God foods" anyway. (foods that were as close to the way God made them- minimal (if any) processing. I see this as a similar thing to BFL. I'm trying to get going again, and will be doing WW core eating and BFL lifting - my support group is at school counting points and the weights are here at home. Working on getting things into balance so that I can see some results. (although-- just WW eating- I've lost 7 lbs. in the past 2 weeks)

Body for Life Forum Message by Kajole (46 posts) at 09:52 PM:
Sure why not! I did weight watchers and I think that its a great program but lacks in that you can eat whatever you want if you do the point system so you might not be getting the nutrition you need (who wants to waste points on stuff that is good for you..LOL!!)I dropped weight but to be honest I was far from healthy and found that if I splured that meant starving myself the rest of the day..not good. But If you use the points and only eat off the approved BFL list then you could do both. Another idea though would be ...save the 10 bucks, find a local BFL person and meet up or exchage pics every week instead :) I agree that the support of WW is probably the real success, not neccessarily the plan. In fact its very similar to bfl it even has the free day (except its a controled free day which I think is better since you get 35 extra points, not unlimited all day..)

Body for Life Forum Message by guitargoddess (147 posts) at 10:13 PM:
I did weight watchers b4 I heard about bfl.... I did great on it, but the more you loose the less you can eat and then it starts getting hard to stretch those points. And then you get bored or tired of it. After you give up the weight comes back super fast and twice as hard. Besides meeting up once a week for an hour and weighing infront of 20 strangers isn't fun. And I also didn't spend my points on healthy food, I took advantage of eat what you want as long as you don't go outside your points. I lost alot of wieght but I wasn't putting on muscle either. Stick to Bfl just kick it up a notch.

Body for Life Forum Message by KauaiBound (181 posts) at 09:08 AM: Patellofemoral Dysfunction
Does anyone have this? It is basically a pain around the knee caused by the patella not tracking right or having too much stress. I was diagnosed a couple years ago and given PT exercises to perform. i was told to not do any squats or weight lifting that causes much stress to the knees. Well I have been doing leg extensions, but have not been able to really push it for fear of hurting my knee and then not being able to do cardio. I have decided to stop doing the quad BFL work and substitute these PT exercises for the time being until my knee starts feeling better. The PT exercises are isometric and meant to strengthen the inner thigh, quad, and other muscles that support and the knee.in it's movements. I would really like to push my quads more as BFL suggests, so was wondering if anyone knows of quad exercises which are easy on the knees? I will not be able to hit 10s with the PT exercises. Sorry for such detail. Thanks, Linn

I can't recommend any excercises to you. Just wanted to offer. That I also have had knee problems in the past (did not have DR look at it) which lead to me having to stop any cardio. Was doing triathlons at the time. I do the LBWO but am hesistant to increase weights. and do not hit 10's on the workouts. I am working on trying to increase weights but am fearful of stressing the knees too much. sigh.

Body for Life Forum Message by KauaiBound (181 posts) at 10:04 AM:
I started to have this knee pain when I first did BFL about 3 years ago. I was doing a lot of trail running and they said that that is pretty tough on my knee condition also. I am glad at least that I know what it is and therefore have at least some therapy I can do if I choose to. I don't go to the doctor much, but I am glad I went this time. I was really suprised at how good they were at figuring it out. I went to a doctor's group that treats OSU atheletes. Do you have insurance? I would definately recommend you go to a doctor to figure out your knee problem and then you will know how much you can push the weights. Best of Luck, Linn

Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (290 posts) at 10:50 AM:
These sound just a bit silly, but give them a try. They work if you do them enough. While seated in a chair, simply push down as hard as you can into the floor with the HEEL of your foot. Feel the leg with your hands as you do that, and you'll note that this specifically fires the vastus medialus muscle, which is the inside muscle you are trying to build up. If you push down with the ball of the foot, it favors firing the outside muscle, though both are actually worked somewhat. These are light exercises but done enough and with enough force they WILL help the strengthening process.

I will look at some of the .coms that you have mentioned. I am VERY interested.

Mucca-thanks so much for your information. I will be placing an order this week and I can't wait to get started...never thought I would be excited about going to the bathroom!! Anyway, I was always afraid to try CC since anything i've tried in the past just did not, well, sit right with my system. I don't know if I'll be taking any photos though. :) Thanks again, I appreciate your honest feedback along with everyone else that offered their opinion!!!

Well, I figure even if they are bizarre movements- the stuff in them wasn't in the psyillium (sp?) that this contains so it must be coming out of me! I have to say after reading the web site last night, I had some very hinky feelings about parasites maybe being in me...everything I looked at I wondered "Are there parasites in that just waiting to hook themselves into me???" And...I went out and had sushi for my birthday last night- I don't even want to begin telling you all what weird thoughts that roe gave me....I swear, If I get even a glimpse of anything that looks like it might have been living in there- it's gonna be the shriek heard round the world.

LOL! I read this whole thread. Thanks for all that info Mucca. I checked out the website and it was neat. I probably wouldn't buy it based off of their testimonials alone (because I'm in sales and I know how that can go) but if you guys are for it, then I trust it. I lived overseas in many different places including some third world countries in my time in the Air Force. I've been out of the AF for one year now. So on top of my old diet of processed crap and eating at various places in third world countries...I'm giving this a shot. If I see any kind of worm or eggs or anything I think I will be scarred for life. I would be absolutely horrified. But it's better than having that stuff living in me. I'll let you guys know how it goes!

I want to thank everyone on this thread for referring Big Bull to the show and tell web-sites.. I was treated to a "before breakfast" picture buffet.. I'm sure that there will be plenty of "show and tell" about it in the master bathroom of Big Bull's Big house. p.s. Big Bull is looking very good these days. He sure knows how to "get after it." Hoping to have some of that rub off on me.

lol, this thread is getting too funny, hot body thats a great mental image, thanks a lot! i started uping my dose up the fiber and the paranil, and holy cow it makes a difference. someone said they were scared about seeing worms in the toilet and such, i think the paranil kills them before they come out. thats why they dont come out regularly if you have them, they are latched onto the "plaque" and your intestines and taking the paranil kills them so obviously they arent holding on to anything anymore and they come out with your bm? does that make sense? lol desira, my husband and i have "show and tell" sometimes. its brought us closer together! its almost like a contest between the 2 of us! im really glad people are interested in this system, i forgot to mention its sweetened with stevia, for those of us, myself inculded, who dont like to, or cant consume/process artificial sweeteners. alexis

When the first one of us receives our shipment start a new thread and we can share our toilet adventures! I for one think I won't sleep after seeing those photos until I get my first dose in me. Free day is surely one of the biggest risks of the whole programme. You can work incredibly hard for 6 days, eat and exercise as well as you possibly can... and from that create a calorie deficit of let's say 3500 cals, which would allow you to lose 1 pound. Great. Free day it's all too easy to go mad. So let's say you do your bacon and eggs and danish for breakfast, go to MacDonalds, eat Pizza for supprt and a couple of scoops of great ice cream on free day... That could be 4000 cals or more VERY easily. You just wiped out a week of work. Although BFL makes it simple by not having to count calories, you still can't ignore the calories in - calories out truth of weight loss.

Since I get up in the AM and go before work, sometimes I don't have the appropriate time for that. I went this morning and did the same weight as Friday. It didn't hurt at all. I can still slightly feel it but not like yesterday, so I think it will be okay. YAY!! I've torn that hamstring and the opposite quad before and I certainly don't want to reinjure!! So far, so good. Thanks again for all the hints/tips. They are greatly appreciated. Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!! Suzanne

rsim05 said: I work a 24hr. shift 7am-7am. I have 2 problems: 1) When I get off my shift at 7am I do not get home until 7:30am and the wife and kids are still home and I help get the kids off to school by 8:15am. I get my workout in after everyone is gone, so I do not eat breakfast until 9:45am-10:00am since I wait an hour after my workouts to eat. This really screws up my schedule for eating during the day. Should I just go ahead and eat breakfast when I get home and just workout later? The reason I eat after a workout is that I really need to lose a lot of weight and I know that you burn more during and right after a workout when you do it on an empty stomach.(Maybe I am wrong thinking this?) 2) Sometimes we are up during the night and only get a couple of hours of sleep. When I get home I really do not feel like eating or working out. I just want to get some sleep. What would be the best thing to do, get the sleep I need or force myself to stay awake to get my workout and food in on schedule?(and let's just say I have already had a free day for the week,so that is not an option.) I only have two weeks left on my 1st challenge. I have been wanting to ask this for some time, but just haven't had the time. It has been great doing this and I think I could do better with some help on my issues. Thanks in advance for any advice, Rich

I remember when I was younger, I used to leave swim practice after 3 or 4 hours of grueling work and go eat McDonalds. If that doesn't defeat the purpose, I don't know what does! Anyway, I am glad that you don't have to worry about anything. Great job in getting the kids thinking about proper nutrition now!

Body for Life Forum Message by stepor (81 posts) at 08:04 AM:
It could be either. I am having a constant struggle with plantar fascitis myself, BUT it goes away with movement and walking, it doesn't really come on, (except in excess). I would suggest ice, and lots of it, a few times per day for 20 minutes each session. And stretch before the ice, your calfs/ achiles (sp?) and the bottom of your foot (pull your foot and your toes back). Also, take time off, move to a bike or non-impact excercise if you can. If it doesn't start to feel better in a day or two (meaning, gets better with movement, morning will still be bad), then you probably have a stress fracture and need a boot and 3-4 weeks off. If it does start to get better, really push the stretching and ice and try to rest it as much as possible. I am doing the stretching and ice as a precaution cause it has been very painful for me before. Hope this helps! Steve

i had a similar pain from using the elliptical machine in my first challenge. it turned out i had stress fractures in my left foot and was overcompensating and got achilles tendonitis in my right foot. it turned out to be that about 5months ago i dropped a piece of funriture on my left foot and fractured it and didnt realize it. i didnt have health insurance at the time so didnt get it checked out, and then months later i started having that problem. i went to the doc and he figured out what happened. i had to stop working out and eventually bought a recumbent bike for cardio which helps. but you should try to get to a free clinic and get some exrays. you dont want to make a small problem worse like i did. but try what steve said and maybe you need new sneakers?? alexis

Thanks for the info. I am feeling a little better, so I don't think it's a fracture. I bought new shoes recently and they aren't as good as I hoped they'd be. I used to have orthotics but I don't remember what happened to them. I guess it's time to get a new pair made. In the meantime, I will take your advice and switch to the bike. Thanks again:)

Jan 27) Pizza, Carrots, Jello, Fruit, Milk, Soup, & Salad Bar Jan 30) Chili Cheese Fries, Crackers, Fruit, Milk, Soup, & Salad Bar Jan 31) Pinto Beans, Corn Bread, Spinach, Cake, Fruit, Milk, Soup, & Salad Bar and we are trying to figure out why we are raising a generation of obese children. well our kdis school now has something called spirit night..where all day they tell the kids..GO TO SONIC FOR DINNER TONIGHT and they come home with fliers, and wearing Stickers that says..EAT AT SONIC FOR DINNER TONIGHT becuase 10% of the meals bought during spirit night benefit the school. So one night every week the kids come home saying we have to have cheesburgers and french fries tonight and of course if your teacher tells you to eat at sonic your going to be upset if mom and dad don't tkae you cuz all the other kids will be there...etc etc. So basically they are promoting fast food to raise $( a big sell out in my opinion!). And the teachers give out candy every friday as rewards for being good during the week. So every friday they come home with a back pack full of candy. Its very frustrating! And my boys are only 5 and 6! Plus they have cupcake parties for basically any occasion they can think of, its nuts! A big change becuase when we were in chicago they schools were soo strict about healthy food but here its like food is a reward for everything. (do I sound annoyed?? LOL!)

PARENTS: Need to start complaining and don't just stop there!!!! If any of you have seen "Supersize Me" they talk about this very thing and the way it effects there behavior and all kinds of stuff. They show a regular public school and the nasty and I mean NASTY food choices. Then they show a boys correctional school and they purchase healthy foods and they also show that they are much more well behaved there grades are through the roof better. And here is the real KICKER ...... the cost is the same if not less for the healthier food! WTF? is going on here? Someone please explain to me? I was lucky I picked a pre-school that is very conscious of food choices no junk only healthy foods are allowed to be packed. No sugar nothing. YEA! But I know when he has to go to public school things will change. Thank god he eats healthy now with me. He loves oatmeal eggwhite pancakes and chicken and brown rice. It's crazy and I so love it! You know it is so funny because I was a very healthy kid when I was younger. I ate rabbit food because I loved it! I ate healthy proteins because I loved them ... then I hit high school all the soda machines, candy bars, the optional lunch line with fries, egg rolls, etc... off campus lunches at Burger King, and the regular lunch line was not any better! It created a monster! That would late cause other bad habits. Sucks you think the schools would care more.

Doesn't it just go to show how messed up thinking is in our society? There was a big decision made right after I graduated from high school to offer more healthy choices in the vending machines...so they added Snapple. I guess it's better than pop on some level, but it's still nothing but sugar and calories. And of course, they kept offering pizza, cheese fries, and giant chocolate chip cookies 3 for $1.00 every single day in the cafeteria.

I was talking to some moms the other day and here's another problem: these kids have practices for various sports, and they need to be there right around dinnertime. So moms have to drive their kids, who are REALLY hungry, to practice...they stop at a fast food place so they're not hungry at practice. They get home at 8pm, enough time to do homework, too late for home dinner. These kids eat fast food all day long. That's what they do with their friends for fun: eat at fast food places. When they get together at someones house, they order PIZZA. Every time. I was driving today & noticed the local middle school had gym class..all the kids were walking the local trail - great, right? THEY WERE ALL FAT, EVERY ONE OF THEM. Unbelievable!! They are all fat, kids are fat???!!!!! These are upper middle class kids. I certainly hope my kiddos don't end up like that. I am envisioning packing my kids healthy picnic dinners on the way to practices. ugh!

Please don't read this as America bashing - I am American but had the good luck to spend last year living and working in Tokyo Japan for my job. In Japan there are vending machines EVERYWHERE - I mean, on the street in residential neighborhoods you will see 5 vending machines side by side every couple of blocks. But in my year there I never once saw a vending machine that dispensed junk food. It doesn't exist. And rarely do you have a machine that dispenses soda. It is all tea and coffee and health drinks. Of course there are machines on the street that dispense cold beer and hot sake (I swear to God) but they are few and far between. When I got back to the US in December my only impression was/is - everyone is so fat. This is a hugely obese nation, and it starts at birth. I think it was my "fresh eyes" that finally put me over the edge fitness-wise.

Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (94 posts) at 10:20 PM:
I think another problem with schools is that they make kids go too long without eating. My kids eat breakfast at about 6 am and they get lunch at around 11. My oldest doesn't get home until 3:45. By then, he's starving and wants to eat everything in sight (usually junk food). I would pack them snacks if the school would allow it, but I guess they figure snacks are only for preschoolers because my middle child is in kindergarten and they don't do snacktime or naptime. Much different than from when I was in school!

I am using my common sense, buy on sale, don't purchase extravagances but find myself wondering if we're "normal" or if I'm screwing up somewhere; I just want something to compare to is all. Thanks - Tracey

family of three; my grocery cost is roughly 350.00 per month. some weeks are higher (120.00) and some lower (70.00)......depending upon what I have in my freezer (we have a friend who hunts & we always have venison)....I always purchase boneless, skinless chicken breast filets & fish weekly and lean cuts of steak when on sale. I always buy fresh & frozen fruits & vegetables, multi-grain bread, cottage cheese, skim milk, etc. As I have a teenage son in the house, I do buy frozen pizza's and hot pockets for him and sandwich needs. I do make a menu for the coming week and list my needs according to the menu (that does help).

Hope you enjoy it and it helps your day today... "You're Still Here" (by David870) When the clouds roll in And the sky's not blue When things don't go Like you'd like them to When the tunnel's end light Doesn't seem to appear Rejoice: you're still here. When all of the effort Seems to do no good When you don't feel the changes Produce like they should When you stand at the precipice And look down at fear Rejoice: you're still here. It's never too late To reach for the light It's never too late To fight the good fight Hang on, keep trying And be of good cheer We've still got tomorrow..... Rejoice: you're still here. Have a great day, everybody...

Being on BFL I have not concerned myself with my one time max bench press. I was in the school's gym the other day and noticed that one of my student's who was boasting how much he could bench press during football was listed on the board at 155 lbs. I asked him if that was his one time max, and he indicated it was. I said, "I think I can beat that." He laughed at me and said, "No way" We have been trying all week to hook up and see who could bench more. Well, he was not able to be there today, and some students came in thinking we were and they wanted to watch. Since they were there I asked them to spot me. I benched 190 lbs at about a level 8-9 intensity, and believe I can get 200 lbs if I focus. I looked on the board. Not only did I bench more than this student, I benched more than all but one of the football players. For a 37 year old out of shape teacher, I was pretty dang well pleased. It was a great motivator to kick up my workout. Stay the Course and have a great BFL day. Brian

I walk around dreaming of how I will look in a bikini in the summer. I talk about it way too much. I bought EFL book. I bought the Myoplex shakes. I buy Muscle & FItness hers and Oxygen. I bought new workout gear. I read these instead of the paper. I bought a Ms. Fitness DVD. I am obsessed obsessed obsessed. I think about the challenge all the time. I tell myself it will get better when I'm done (8 1/2 weeks), and then I will be a normal person. I'll continue to BFL but won't obsess. ha ha!! Tell me I'm not the only one.

I am online waay too much reading up about working out, nutrition, supplements. YOU NAME IT! =) You are definitily not the only one. What's soo funny, is my boss knows my food plan everyday. Today he brought in 5 of those HUGE yummy cookies, m&ms choc chip etc. to tempt me. Amazingly I went all day without eating one! ha haa I think he was quite disappointed that his little plan didn't work. =)

Thread: Do You Work Out at Home? (91 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by jvkooy (5 posts) at 07:44 PM: Do You Work Out at Home?
I need help! I've really been slacking. The YMCA is 20minutes from our house. I have such a hard time getting myself up and going in the morning....plus I hate getting ready for work there. I talked with my husband and think for the money I spend in the yearly membership I could set myself up at home. Before I do, those who work out at home...does this help you stay on track? Second, what types of equipment do you use? Please help! Thanks!

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (648 posts) at 07:50 PM:
I workout at home. I have dumbbells (3,5,8,10,12,15,20,25 ), elliptical glider, a bike, a treadmill, various bands, a step, lots of exercise tapes, and a total gym. Tomorrow my BF is buying me an adjustable bench. I have an assortment from all the years of collecting exercise equipment. Key word "COLLECTING" finally using.

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (648 posts) at 07:53 PM:
I slao have a Gym membership that I only pay $7.00 a month for had it for 10 years probably gone there for a total of 50 time in that time span. It is 30 min away from home and in the opposite direction of work.

Body for Life Forum Message by kitwhit (56 posts) at 07:58 PM:
My "gym" is just slightly out of the way from home. On cardio days I work my treadmill here at home and in the spring I will buy a bicycle to mix it up a bit. On weight days I go to the gym. The gym is a small wellness center at my local medical center - $43 to go month by month and even less expensive to buy 6 month or 1 year memnberships. They have all the free weights and machines I could possibly need and I am now finding it enjoyable to go there. I actually look forward to it.

Body for Life Forum Message by nola (91 posts) at 07:59 PM:
I do both, but lately I have been working out at home more because the gym is too crowded with New Years Resolutions, lol. I have lots of dumbells and a nice exercise bike, but I wish I had room for a treadmill because that's the main reason I go to the gym. I like going to the gym because I can drop off my baby at the kids' corner and have some time to myself, but I like doing it at home because there is no travel time (even tho it's only 10 min away) or getting halfway decent to be seen in public. If I can figure out a way to fit a treadmill at home, I just might drop the gym though!

I first started with only dumbbells (5, 8, and 10). I had no weight bench and would use an ottoman in my living room. When i went grocery shopping and needed to increase weights I would buy the next set of dumbbells. I started in the spring time, so I was able to do my cardio at local trails. I gradually added a weight bench, treadmill, and exercise ball. I have read from others where they even household items when they started and jumped rope for cardio. Best of Luck, Linn

Plus I currently live less than a mile from my gym so it would be hard to say I can't get there!

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (755 posts) at 10:11 PM:
I have worked out at home from the beginning. I started with: 1. One set of dumbells from 2lbs to 20lbs 2. A weight bench given to us that looks like it's from WWII, but works for now 3. Barbell set that goes to 110lbs. The barbell and dumbells is all we started with and we did our cardio outdoors. This cost around $150 in the beginning. We now have: 1. Treadmill given to us by someone who couldn't use it anymore 2. A PowerRider that we picked up at a garage sale for $10 3. A stationary bike also given to us by someone who couldn't use it anymore 4. A complete home gym that we just got 2 weeks ago. All you need to start with is a set of barbells and dumbells...you can slowly work up to the rest, and probably catch some things that people just don't want anymore. People who just spent load of money for the New Years Resolutions will be putting their excercise equipment in garage sales come Spring! Jennifer

I am not sure I am doing everything right, in fact I am not even sure I am on the right track. I had a positive outlook for the first two weeks but now mid week three I am feeling very low and confused. The problem is not just with the outside but with the inside as well. I lack confidence in my looks as well as my abilities and I feel like I am doing a horrible job with this challenge. I don't know if I need to eat more or less, if I need to lift more or less, I feel crazy. I thought I would feel more confident by now and I don't...I don't at all. Deep breathe. I took a look at your profile and seems like you are making some progress. In the beginning BFL can be overwhelming and there is a big learning curve. Set small goals for yourself for each day and take it one day at a time. You can do this we all believe in you and are here to support you. If you have specific questions on the excercises or food ask away.

Body for Life Forum Message by GlennH (78 posts) at 08:25 PM:
Well there are plenty of people here that can help answer your questions, but first you  need to decribe both your weight training (upper and lower body) and cardio routines in detail and give us an example of a days worth of meals. With that information we can help to guide you.

Am I missing something?? I just looked at your profile and you have shown more results in 3 weeks than I have in 11!! What ever you ARE doing is right!! I think you are feeling like I did at around week 4. I felt like I lost my beginning momentum. At the start it was like I was just itching for those drastic changes and I was full of faith.. then a month into it, I didn't see much change and I felt like I was being left behind. However I tried to ignore my brain and keep faith and keep going. There was (and is) NO WAY I am not going to finish my challenge!! I have seen too much proof on here that this program works.. it is simple, don't make it complicated and try to alter stuff because you don't think it is working fast enough. THE CHANGES WILL COME!! you are doing great just KEEP AT IT!!

Body for Life Forum Message by morpho_veja (58 posts) at 09:30 PM:
Perhaps I don't have a map. i honestly read the book two years ago did the challenge then and had great success. I guess now I just want the success and not the work and it doesn't quite happen that way. Maybe I need to re-read the book. I guess I really don't have a focus all i know is I don't want to be the size I am now. Today I did LBW I like to use dumbells I tried barbell once and it really seemed hard on the back: Bench Lunges (don't know what they are called but you put one leg on bench behind you.) 12@10lbs 10@12lbs 8@15lbs then I did six walking lunges with 25lb dumbells. then 12 bench lunges with 15lbs and 12 standing lunges with 25lbs - This is my attempt to mix it up because my lower body was not feeling anything from just lunges and squats. Squats 12 to the side raising a 10lb medicine ball. 10 to the side raising a 12lb medicine ball. Then regular squats 8@20lbs, 6@25lbs, 12@25, and then I did leg press @170. Calfs I alternate between angled calf raises and single leg...... 12@20lbs, 10@25lbs, 8@30lbs, 6@35lbs, 12@35lbs, and 12@40lbs Abs I usually do 80 on each (twist sit up) and about 60 decline sit ups holding 10lb weight above my head. Today However I had no energy.....getting sick so I did a ab workout tape at home (first time I have done this and not as effective.) Today I ate: Protein Shake, Protein Power Soup (actual name a co-worker made it), Grape Chicken Salad from EFL, One Enchilada from EFL, Protein Shake This week I began using fitday.com to track food and activities. I seem to consume an average of 1300 calories a day. And I drink a lot of water at meals and in between. My Cardio I usually run this changes but typically is around 5mph to 6mph to 6.5mph to 7mph to 8mph lately I have been running nine minute miles and I do cardio for 20 min. I do workout at least six days (sometimes I still go on freeday) Okay so this was a big mesh of information sorry if it doesn't make sense. I would appreciate any input as to what I should do different or the same. And yes MichiganMike I will get the book to read again (last time I checked it out from the library) It seems like one I should own. Thanks, Morpho_Veja

Body for Life Forum Message by GlennH (78 posts) at 10:21 PM:
At first glance your workout seems ok as long as you are hitting your high points, but it appears with the information you supplied on the nutrition side of things that you are lacking carbs on most of your meals. This will work against you for building muscle and providing you the energy to workout effectively. Low carbing and intense exercise just doesn't mix well. Each meal should contain a balance of quality protein and a complex carb. I don't see any healthy essential fats in your example either. I hope that helps. :)

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (395 posts) at 09:56 AM:
Two things....I wouldn't put that much trust in an electronic scale, especially with a reading that close in body fat during one week's time. Secondly, you need to give it time...I saw all my results after week 8. My scale was all over the place before that!!!!!! Stay consistent with workouts and especially clean eating. It will pay off. Period.

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Head (58 posts) at 10:01 AM:
If you are using a bodyfat scale ... IMO, it is virtually useless in calculating bodyfat. Calipers and/or taking body measurements are much more reliable than bf scales.

Body for Life Forum Message by Hillary (65 posts) at 10:05 AM:
I agree with muscle head...I asked specifically for one of those scales for Christmas last year, and according to its readings, my body fat has increased 3% since I've been doing BFL, which is obviously not true. It says my boyfriend is obese - also not the case, as he is tall and quite muscular. But it also says in the directions that it does not provide accurate readings for athletes, so the closer you get to being athletic, I think the less accurate it is. I've pretty much given up on weighing myself all together...I can tell much more just by looking at myself in the mirror.

Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (88 posts) at 10:07 AM:
hmmmm... I hope youre all right about that thing just being plain ol useless! So what do you measure with? Like the measuring tape seamstresses use? Where could I get that? Do you think GNC would have it? I plan on going there during my lunch break..

Body for Life Forum Message by Muscle Head (58 posts) at 10:09 AM:
Try Myotape .... very inexpensive. Lots of places sell them on-line ... and you may be able to find them at GNC.

Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (235 posts) at 10:32 AM:
Ditto on the "bioimpendence scales are crap" message. I use mine to guage my weight and that's it. 7-point caliper testing is the most accurate method on a reasonable budget (there are other far more expensive ways to get really accurate BF measurements). Make sure you get the same technician to take your measurements over time, and make sure they are experienced! Your gym might have that service for a small fee ($20 or so) or for free, or you can check around to see if there is a sports medicine clinic in your area that might do it.

Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (88 posts) at 10:59 AM:
Well Im not a member of a gym so I wouldnt be able to have an experienced technician take my measurements... this is something I will have to do on my own at home... calipers just seem like something I would mess up too easily... so i'm gonna look for that myotape =)

Body for Life Forum Message by shkelly (228 posts) at 11:02 AM:
DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT believe what your scale says about BF!!! My whole last challenge I went back and forth between 37% and 37.5% when in reality I went from 35% to 27%. I have calipers and an Omron as well so I know this to be true. If I had gone by the scale I would have cried everyday!! Only use the scale as a tool with the help of BF from calipers or something else. You will feel much better when you realize how wrong your scale is. Also you can use just regular ol' measuring tape like they seamstresses use and use the navy site to get your BF%. http://www.bblex.de/en/calc/navy.php I hope this helps!! You are doing a great job so don't be hard on yourself!! Shelly =)

Hi everyone, I'm on day three of the BFL. Eating six meals a day feels like I'm eating so much. I have been watching my portions. Just not used to eating so often. Anyway a lot of good snacks I've seen for protein is cottage cheese. I cant stand it. I bought a big container to mix with my yogurt. Tried it and threw the whole thing away! Please! Does anyone have more quick ideas for protein for snacks. Thank You

You just needs some ideas on how to hide it using a blender. Will you go buy some again??? :) The EFL pancakes are great. I eat those a lot. Blending it with yogurt will also mask the taste, and obviously gets rid of the chunks. You can even make cottage cheese/yogurt taste like frozen yogurt with a few berries and some Splenda added in there and then frozen. There's also blended cottage cheese with Splenda and cinnamon to make a dip for apples. I could on and on....now I'm getting hungry.

Egg beaters are my fav protein snack and they only take about 3 minutes to cook up. Try having cottage cheese with some sugar free jelly stired into it, much yummier! Or cottage cheese with some splenda, cinnimin and chopped up fruit like apple or bananas. You can also get whey protein and make up a quick shake or a myoplex shake (I love the myoplex lite choc shakes with half a banana in it) Sliced turkey meat rolled up with a peice of fat free american cheese or some mustard. I also cook a couple of frozen boneless chicken breasts up every sunday night and chop them up into bite size peices and put them in portioned baggies. They are great to keep in the fridge and grab that and a peice of fruit and a bottle of water on your way out the door. Hope that helps :)

I too hate CC, but knowing how good it is for me I find ways to disguise the texture and flavor. For a pre-workout meal idea: .5C FF Cottage Chz .5C old fashioned oats .5C frozen blueberries thawed you can add splenda to taste, just make sure you mix this up really good. For my last meal before bed: .5C FF Cottage Chz .25C frozen strawberries thawed 2Tbsp sliced almonds splenda to taste mixed up really well, i tell myslef i'm eating a sundae or parfait keep in mind i don't have cottage cheese twice a day every day, hope this helps

Georgiawendy??? Are all those recipes in the EFL book or are they your own creations? They sound great. Now that I've found a new love for cottage cheese, yogurt, and orange slices mixed together. -Ed-

I also hate cottage cheese but I have found some ways that are really GOOD. 1/2 small potatoe with cottage cheese pepper and Mrs.Dash (any favor). Fat free cottage cheese, fat free plain yogurt (which I also do not like) and splenda to taste and cinnamon. This is going to be eaten my me at least three times a week. I believe that Mary from Ks. put this on guestbook. I thought right good for you but can I gag it down.

Agent... I sure didn't like CC at all before BFL... But I love it now... Although it has to be mixed with yogurt for me to stomach it. It makes up like 3 of my meals a day...

I love cc any way any time. I guess I'm lucky. No jitter2001, only the pancakes are in the EFL book, I think. I really don't use the book that often except for the occasional lunch/dinner. The rest I've kind of thrown together with help from other BFL'ers, especially Mary from KS, the BFL guestbook mad scientist in the kitchen.

I don't eat dairy. Here are my typical snacks. - Boca sausages (links) and burgers (all american)- These guys are pretty darn decent with catsup. Don't accept substututes; all other soy burgers SUCK. - Shakes- Soy milk and banana with bulk whey vanilla protein (or just protein and vanilla) and splenda. Yums. Easy and great. - Soy nuts- I love these for practicality. They are so easy to transport. They don;'t taste great but they're high protein, and high fiber. Be careful not too eat too many, just 1/2 cup has 20 grams protein but also 10 grams good fat.

I am addicted to cottage cheese. But I used to loathe it with the fire of 1,000 suns. Quite a turnaround, I'd say. Some fun concoctions I enjoy: 3/4 c. cc with .5 c frozen blueberries and a few drops of stevia extract. I make this in the am and by the time I'm ready for my mid morning meal the blueberries have melted a bit. .5 c of cc and a packet of Hickory Smoked Tuna. Mix well and add some Konriko cajun seasoning. This makes 2 servings. Melt a serving in a toaster oven over Ezekiel bread and top with some salsa. Mix with Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning and use as a creamy salad dressing. Blend 1 c. of cc with 1 c. of raw oats and 6 egg whites, some stevia extract, cinnamon and cardomom in a blender and cook like pancakes. Makes three servings. For a Protein+Fat meal (like before bedtime) .5 c cc with 1 T of almond butter, and some stevia extract. Mix well. .5 c cc with .5 c brown rice, italian seasonings (I like to nuke it at this point until the cheese is a bit melty) and a bit of tomato and salt, pepper and 1 tsp or so of parm. There are tons of ways to eat cottage cheese. The cool thing about it is it can be either sweet or savory.

I LOVE COTTAGE CHEESE. Can eat it right out of the container...yuuuuuumy And Robin, I love soynuts, I think they taste awesome and they are great when you have that need to snack on something crunchy. Have you tried flavor ones like BBQ?

Agent 69 said "am I the only BFL member who actually loves cottage cheese? I think I must be" Nope...I've always loved cottage cheese since I was 3 feet tall! But BFL introduced me to new ways to eat it. I never tried it with cinnamon though...sounds good. One of my favorites is mixing it with salsa & dipping wheat tortilla chips made from tortilla wraps. ~Tried To Amend My Carnivorous Habits~

I can't stand cottage cheese either. During my first challenge I tried it a couple times mixed with other things and it only made me gag. This challenge I haven't touched it. During the week my morning snack is an apple with 2 oz low fat sliced cheese and my afternoon snack is a yogurt with 2 oz sliced deli meat, usually turkey or chicken. For a treat I will also do the protein pudding with a bit of fat free whip cream. But for the most part I have the same snacks everyday. Sue

Body for Life Forum Message by ibmissy (6 posts) at 12:21 PM: How much weight are you using?
Ok fellow newbies. I am curious about how much weight everyone is using when doing their UBWO and LBWO. I am too ashamed to say how little lbs I am using. Then again I wasn't actively exercising pre-bfl. I am just curious where everyone else is at. Especially the women. Thanks. :) ---Missy

Body for Life Forum Message by Scattergold (88 posts) at 12:33 PM:
hahaha! I am not ashamed of my chicken arms! And am quite proud to say this morning I graduated myself to 10lb freeweights for my UBWO. For my lower body I dont use weights, just do lunges and squats and things like that... at least for now I'm still able to hit my 10's doing it that way....

Body for Life Forum Message by VanessaDG (11 posts) at 12:41 PM:
It depends on what exercise I am doing. Chest I do, Dumbbell Flyes at 12@5, 10@10, 8@15, 6@20, 12 @15, then 12 regular pushups Most everything is something like the above...except for my shoulders and triceps, for those the weights are lower.

Body for Life Forum Message by taylor76 (11 posts) at 12:48 PM:
Hi ibmissy. How much weight you use depends on the types of exercises you do. It can also depend on to some extent on your genetics. One thing that I learned when I began lifting weights several years ago is not to care how much weight other people were lifting. When I looked at the weight that other people were lifted at it caused me to get discouraged. It made me think, “what is the point? I can’t ever be that strong!” Over time I learned that what was really is important is how hard you work. Instead I learned to think, “I am going to outwork everyone in the gym, even if I am not as strong.” Over time that attitude paid off. Granted that I have been lifting consistently over the years I eventually became one of the strongest guys in the gym. I don’t mean at all to be rude to tell you not to worry about what other people are lifting. Just do all that you are capable of doing. Time and hard work will do the rest. Take it from a “meathead” just make sure you are pushing yourself to your maximum every lift and I know that you will achieve all your goals.

Body for Life Forum Message by Janie (3 posts) at 12:56 PM:
Hey Missy, don't worry about how little you're using. Check to see if the effort required is at the level Bill describes in the BFL book. After not having worked out for years I had to start back with one, two and three lbs. I was able to go up significantly the first time I tried the Challenge (which I unfortunately did not finish) but this time around I am pushing myself past my comfort zone as often as possible. I took the advice of one of this years champions, Brian Baker, who always said, "You can do more than you think you can!" It's true! I'm in week 8 and I actually did six dumbell curls with 17.5 lb. dumbells and was able to do my last two sets of 12 with 15 lbs.! Talk about hitting a 10! It was such an emotional/mental and physical high! BUT, remember, you have to start small and grow. But DON'T be afraid to try more weight- try increasing the weight at your next workout. If you can do twleve reps with the weight you have then go a little higher- go until you CAN'T do twelve reps- only 10, and then PUSH yourself to do one more each time. That's what's going to build your muscle. And remember Brian's advice, "YOU CAN DO MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU CAN."

What Janie just said is so true. I did my first challenge and kept saying I was going to up my weights. For some reason I kept NOT upping my weights. This challenge I am adding weights and it really is working. DUH. I don't know why I held back, maybe fear of not being able to do it. Oh well. Lori

Body for Life Forum Message by Janie (3 posts) at 12:58 PM:
that would be the twleve reps on your fifth set- not your first. ;o)

It is bnot the weight that is most important it is how the muscles are being worked and how hard you are pushing

I can do most all the man style! um lower body on all exercises the max I have used (But I need to buy heavier weights) is 65#s. that is holding a 20#er and a 12# in each hand! it hurts! I can't even feel any sorness the next day! ? I mean I use to be dieing! I know I need to try something,,

I did my UBWO yesterday here's a sample: (following the 12,10,8,6,12,12 rep format) Incline dumbbell curls: 12,15,15,20,15 lbs Concentration curls: 12 lbs Shoulder Press: 15,20,25,25,15 Front Raises: 15 lb plate I've come along way since Dec 5, which was my first week. I started with: Shoulder Press: 10,12,12,15,12 lbs Lateral Raises:12 lbs On Jan 2, I added the incline dumbbell curls (I find them the best for biceps, and think they're the hardest): 10,12,15,20,20 lbs Make sure to keep challenging yourself and increasing your weights every week or every 2nd week to make progress. Make sure you lift with absolute correct form. Sure it's easier to lift a heavier weight with sloppy form, but you could hurt yourself or someone next to you. I've also progressed a lot with my assisted pullups. I do these every UBWO day and consistency and increasing your weights to keep challenging yourself will lead to progress. Keep up the great work out there! Lisa

I use the following two sites and average the results. Just be sure you enter the info correctly, be sure to identify your correct gender, etc, or it can be off. http://www.bblex.de/en/calc/navy.php http://www.healthcentral.com/cooltools/nutrition/homebodyfattest.aspx

OK, this requires a bit of forethought but I buy those bags of fish filets - inside the bag are several individually vacuum sealed filets. If I take one out of the freezer in the morning and put it in the fridge it is defrosted by the time I get home from work and then only takes 5-10 minutes to broil. They have tuna, salmon, tilapia, cod . . . and they are in the perfect portions. I just steam a little broccoli and BAM!! A great healthy meal.

I always keep a bunch of grilled chicken on hand (or boiled chicken). Then for a quick meal, I use a whole wheat pita pocket, top with pizza sauce, portion of cut-up chicken, red peppers, and zucchini or spinach and mushrooms (any veggies you like) a bit of lowfat mozzarella and spices (oregano, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, parmesean) and bake in toaster oven for about 10 minutes. YUM!

Body for Life Forum Message by D-lite (141 posts) at 06:36 AM:
Well I don't know exactly which recipe she's talking about, but on South Beach (and now on BFL) I make these quiche cups all the time:

Spray a muffin pan with PAM and turn your oven on to 350. Get Canadian Bacon or LF ham and push down into each one of the cups. Then you get whatever veggies you want (sauté if necessary) and an sprinkle of cheese and put it also in the muffin cups then you put 1/4 cup of egg beaters in each cup and cook for 30 minutes (or until egg is cooked). They make 12 (or however big your muffin pan is) and 2 to a serving.

I use all sorts of veggies depending on my mood...frozen spinach, roasted red peppers, onions and mushrooms, etc.
