I needed to re-surface this thread because I'm experiencing twinging pain in my left forearm (palm side). I think it's because of how I hold my mouse every day (I'm left handed). I just wonder if it's also having an effect on my weight lifting. For example, the other day I was doing basic DB curls, and my left arm just kind of freaked out and went in its own direction. The weights also feel heavier in my left hand than in my right. Weird huh?

Hot Body...that doesn't sound like carpal tunnel, but something else. Carpal tunnel starts with tingling and numbness...and for the more progressed carpal tunnel, pain. If that happens again, I'd have it checked out.

It does help out. My knee has it. I used to not even be able to bend my knee all the way. It has tendonitis, but with working out it has definitely helped.

Thanks very much, Jennifer! I just Googled "forearm pain" and came upon this (below). Combination of lots of computer work and weight lifting primarily with dumbbells has its toll, I guess.
The parallel configuration of the forearm muscles brings an easy opportunity for adhesions to form in the fascia which wraps the muscles, essentially gluing them together. Strain that occurs due to excessive grasping, holding, lifting, twisting and curling will cause the fascia to undergo a chemical change in an effort to provide support to areas that are overworked. In time the fascia will become sticky and restrictive. Rather than muscles being able to slide and glide effortlessly across one another, muscles that are adhered move as a single unit.
When adhesions are present, all of the flexor muscles on the palm side of the forearm contract as a single unit and all of the extensor muscles on the opposite side of the forearm lengthen as a single unit because they are stuck together. This makes a small movement like bending a finger much more work for the muscles and excessive strain results. If this is repeated over a long enough period of time, the muscles become irritated, adhesions become more dense and cover a broader area, and forearm aching, pain and restriction has an opportunity to develop.

I do Les Mills classes (www.lesmills.com)- so I do a different class each day (teach step on mondays) - that way I keep it varied. I also love running, swimming, cycling and playing social team sports, but with team sports it is harder to have control over your peaks.

For me..I try to change up every workout. I may start on the elliptical, and end on the bike, or treadmill. I may spend about 10-15 minutes on all three, or add the stair monster (I am NOT fond of that machine!!) in. I try to not get my body used to doing the same motions. I think it is your own personal preference, though!!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (364 posts) at 10:25 AM
I change up whenever the mood strikes me. Usually I do the elliptical, but sometimes I just feel like it's a treadmill kind of day. :) But at the very least, I'll change it up after 4 weeks, just like I do with weights.

Whilst having a discussion with my partner this afternoon about movies we watched as teenagers I recalled a movie about body building which was what made me fall in love with the whole concept of BB.However I can't remember the name of it or if I can even get a copy in the UK.
The film was made in the 1980's and the general storyline was as follows; A girl in her late teens was mugged and to stop this from happening again she went to a gym to take up weight training. The gym owner saw her potential as a female BBer and began training her for a competition but as her family didn't approve of 'females lifting weights' she kept it quiet until the competition and I think it had one of those happy endings where she won the comp and family were happy etc...
If any of you guys know what it was called please tell me as I would like to try and buy a copy if it is available in European DVD format.
Anyway I will let you guys in the US get back to watching some sporting event that is on today I believe.
Many thanks
Sharon

Hi everyone,
I am getting back my taxes soon and have committed myself to investing in some sort of exercise equipment. My question to everyone here, If you had $300.00 dollars to spend on exercise equipment what would you get. I really would love something that tones my arms and legs and will also help me get in the heart pumping action. Please give suggestions I want something that will really start flushing this weight off of my skinny inner person.

Dear SandiePooh: I have about 100 lbs. to lose. I am at 240lbs. I need to get to 140lbs. I am at 34%bodyfat. I want to be at 10%. So you are not alone. It's a long journey, but being consistent will get you very far. Everything adds up. All your efforts will pay off down the line. It's all worth it.

When I started I needed to lose about 80lbs, which is a cheerleader I guess. I'm a little over half way there, and not giving up! It's gonna take more than one 12 week challenge, but it's a lifestyle change, so it's ok if it takes a little longer, because I plan to stay fit once I get there for the rest of my life. You've done the best thing for yourself by starting this journey, have fun with it!

you all (my southern dialect) are so wonderful. OMG, I love it here. Can I stay? I tell you this is the only site I have been on that is so beneficial mentally, physically, and emotionally. YOU ALL ROCK!!!. I think the wonderful part of BFL is that you have a goal of 12 weeks at a time, and I know once I complete the first 4 weeks, I can move on to the next 4 weeks and so on. If I look at each week as an achievement I know I can continue on and make this a part of my life. My thing is not to look at a missed day as a failure or as a problem but just keep trudging on. Life is what you make of you and your free will is what you do with it. I wholeheartedly believe that. Thank you all so much, with my new BFL family I know I can do it. And my hot pink fuzzy bikini is right around the corner. It may take my a while to get there but once the journey is completed I can celebrate my new life. You are all so awesome. Thanks again.

Sandiepooh I'm there with you. I have to lose one of the Olsen twins or Nichole Richie! Don't worry if you have a bad day (or 6 in my case). You just have to look forward. For me it's more than a 12 week challege, it's a lifestyle change. Having a bad day is part of life and we're not allowed do-overs in everyday life. Keep that bikini on your mind. I just bought a black one and even though it looks crazy on me now by the end of the summer...LOOK OUT!

Sandiepooh, I don't have the weight to lose. But I am so excited for you. You will be someone who inspires others! Your transformation will have a dominos effect. Everyone who knows you and everyone who watches your progress here (and there are sooooo many people who don't even post who will be watching) will be motivated to do the same.
You will lose the weight as you gain muscle, and confidence. You will NOT have extra skin or any need for surgery or lypo. You will show EVERYONE that keeping to your commitment will produce steady results.
I'm going to be watching you and cheering for you. I know that you are making a difference, not only for yourself, but for so many others.

I have a whole person to lose, actually about 100 pounds, or 2 of my 8 year old daughter. I have been working for about 6 weeks on my life change and while it has been slow the weight is coming off and staying off. Just remember you didnt gain all of the weight overnight and you wont lose it over night.
I would love to start an email support network/club for those of us who have to lose 85 pounds or more. ANYBODY interested PM me. I know that it would be a lot better for me to open up my email with messages and inspirational quotes from others who are in the same boat with me.
Sandiepooh, just remember that you can and will do this. One day at a time, one pound at a time.

I've had botox several times- I have the forhead wrinkle and it does make a person look angry- botox is wonderful- it doesnt freeze your face ( well I guess if you had the whole face done) but you certainly cant scrunch it down like before- it makes me not only look better but FEEL better- more calm and not waking up with headaches- downside- its pretty expensive ( 200-300 per place) and it last about 4 months- so if 100 a month is ok with you its definitely worth it.

Since I'm starting my challenge tomorrow, I don't think it's such a great idea to make the bread, even if it is for everyone else in my house! I just know I'd eat it too! :-) Does anyone have any BFL ideas as to what I can do with these frozen bananas??? I'd love to make some sort of breakfast or mid-meal muffins or something like that...
Thanks guys!

How about adding them to a shake? Yummy...or defrosting some and adding them to the BFL protein pancakes? You may even be able to bake the pancake mixture into cupcakes..just a thought. OR how about mixting it with cottage cheese in the food processor and adding some splenda, then freeze into frozen yogurt? OR defrost and warm w/ some sugar free maple syrup and top your cottage cheese or pancakes w/ it? Hope this helps :)

Thanks everyone. Form on the Smith Machine is not my problem. It's getting adequate weight that's the issue. I'll try the leg press next!
Body for Life Forum Message by Damon (29 posts) at 12:50 PM
I'd suggest trying a free bar and a lighter weight. Go down until your thighs are parallel with the floor( or deeper.) Personally, I dont really use the smith machine. I think it actually stresses my knees more having to lift in a straight line opposed to the freedom of motion with a regular bar
Body for Life Forum Message by Minka (58 posts) at 12:58 PM
i dont like the smith machine either..hurts my lower back too much. i do most of my squats using an exercise ball and dumbbells. and i use the leg press and hack squat
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (769 posts) at 02:17 PM
I have the same problem, but am finding the leg press to work wonders! I do the leg press for my first sets, then my last 12 still with squats.

Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (429 posts) at 02:21 PM
Try the leg press either sitting pushing straight out or the one where you are pushing the sled up. Try turning your feet out like a duck one time. The next LBWO, turn your feet in like you're pigeon-toed and do your reps that way. Also, walking dumbbell lunges or one-legged dumbbell lunges with your back foot up on a bench behind you are great for quads and for balance.
Body for Life Forum Message by georgiawendy (429 posts) at 05:22 AM
One of my favorites is spider curls using the EZ curl bar and the preacher bench. You stand up and lean forward against the opposite side of the bench from where the seat is. This gives your arms the absolute fullest range of motion. You can also do one-arm dumbbell curls this way (thanks for the idea 3D) Google it if you need a picture example.

Do not be embarrassed. The point is you started and your life will never be the same. Stay with it. When I started out with butterflies the max on 12 reps was 90 lbs. It was hard for me to put the weight on the Smith machine. Now I do reps with 250 lbs for butterflies! You will increase as days go by. God bless. Jesse

It's hard to cook that stuff and not want to eat it, but I stand firm! Maybe over time, I will get them to eat what I eat, but for now I am stuck cooking two meals.

Hey Daisy, I have the same problem. My mom just had a stroke and I am the sole provider in our home, even though I buy the grocery my sister seems to sneak some things in there that my mother and I are not suppose to have because of diabetes. My mom thinks I am so mean when I say mom your not suppose to have that. I have my own refrigerator in my room and I stock it with the things for my challenge and my health. I buy fruit and vegetable for both of us. I prepare a weeks worth of food so all I have to do is grab and go and that way I don't ever have to use her refrigerator. My refrigerator is a small one so I can only put in there what I need. and it works great. They only cost about 70 dollars at wolly world for a good one. maybe that can help.

A rule of thumb that I have heard has worked very well for a lot of people is to set a goal to drink half of your body weight in ounces a day. This is an awful lot of water and you might now be able to get it all in, but like I said it has worked for those I know who have done it.

And the BFL for Women book is so confusing. If I hadn't read the original BFL book, and just relied on her book, I wouldn't know when to work out or what a portion was or I might still be gaining weight while counting calories. *shudder* The simplicity of Bill's program is what makes it so awesome. Just stick with the original.

Eileen, I don't really do anything special. I do all my workouts with dumbbells. For quads, I do dumbbell squats--now using 15,20,25, and 30 lb dumbbells and then just a barbell squat for my high point with 50 lbs.
Hams, I do deadlifts using 20, 25,30 and 35 lb dumbbells with high point being lunges at 20 lbs. Next week, I'm changing that to lunges for everything and deadlifts being my high point.
Calves, are just calf raises with same weight as above, then 1 legged calf raises with 20 lbs.
Hope that helps.

I want to get a treadmill for home....I think I can carve out a corner in my garage for a little gym set-up. I had a treadmill years ago but my ex-husband has it, and while I could get it back (I know he does not use it) it is (1) about 12 years old now and (2) really loud. There are a few by ProForm in my price range (I was hoping to spend no more than about $600)...does anyone have one of those? Or something else? I'm used to the great Star Trac treadmills at my gym, but those things are about $7,000...

Hi Eileen,
I have a proform 995 SEL that I really love - I bought it around 2 years ago after doing some research. I think I spent around 800 at the time. I use it for running around 5-8 mph.
Truthfully... you have to figure out what you are going to use the treadmill for. You will be able to find a treadmill for primarly walking..for around 600 or under... but if you are planning to use it for jogging/running.. .you really need to set aside a little more money for a quality treadmill (certainly not 7000...but more then 600). The treadmill has to be more stable, heavier, bigger motor, etc. to handle jogging and you pay for that. I'd give yourself around 1g to play with to find something that will be suitable for real jogging/running.
Body for Life Forum Message by nola (111 posts) at 08:52 AM
Thanks...I do want to run on it so maybe I do need to up my budget. I only walked on the other treadmill I had. I'm a few months off from purchasing since we are in the middle of renovating the rest of the house and the garage is full of boxes right now, but I would like to get things st up in the there by the end of March or April.
Body for Life Forum Message by Crispywafers (13 posts) at 09:20 AM
No problem. I'm sure you'll find something that fits your needs and is in your budget.
I did see this website- they seem to have some reviews:
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/health_and_fitness/treadmills/index.html
Good luck in your search! It is nice to be able to just crawl out of bed and go jogging in your underwear.

Oh one more thing - sometimes you can find some great treadmills, used, for half the price of buying them new! So you could always check out your local newspapers. Good luck!

i have a proform and i LOVE IT!!
its got the flex board, so it has a little 'give' when you run..easier on your knees. it inclines to 10%, it goes up to 10mph. it has the ifit and all that, but inever use it. i LOVE it

oh yeah..i just wanted to say, get the additional warranty on it. if you are going to be using it alot, you can have them come out and tune it up for free. i just redid my warranty after it expired. i know i will have to have them come and tighten the belt and stuff.

Delivered quickly, easy to set up and very comfortable to run ont.
Check out www.smoothfitness.com to see what they offer... I got the 6.25 treadmill but only paid $1399 not the $1699 they have it for now.

Ok name change from JanisMomto2 to YummyMummy but rethinking that name now!!
I was 148.5 after week 1 of BFL....got TOM the next week didn't bother weighing..was sorta near the end of the week and I still felt bloated and gross by the next Sunday so I didn't weigh then either. Kinda thought it would be fun to wait the few weeks and see what I was today....WELL....this story goes downhill from there....150.0 this morning **jaw hits scale** WTF seriously!!! I have missed ONE workout due to a kid ER visit and have eaten clean this week and had a few extras during TOM week but CERTAINLY (and I cannot stress this ENOUGH!) not 1.5lbs of crap!! I have been drinking my water, etc.....it's just not coming off as easliy this challenge and I am more than a little depressed about it **sigh**
Anyone have any uplifting words for my weight gaining butt??
Thanks...ugh

Don't look at the scale...scales are for fish. Yes, its hard not to use them. For now, go more by how you feel, how your clothes are fitting. Perhaps you are building more muscle than you think. Just keep plugging along. As long as you KNOW you are eating correctly and doing all your workouts, then it will happen.
Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!!

Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1183 posts) at 10:24 AM
I agree with Jess,
Tracking bf and measurements in my opinion are central to determining progress or lack thereof. Also, from what pics I could see you do not look like you are gaining weight, so probably lean mass ( good thing) which takes up less space.

Kerry

I'm sorry you're feeling so frustrated.
This being your second challenge, I'm sure you're aware that the scale is a big fat liar... have you taken measurements?
Just keep up the hard work and try to ignore the scale. BFL works - you know that from experience. =)
Body for Life Forum Message by jamber (993 posts) at 10:30 AM
Hey Janis I hear ya! I'm in the same boat, and its not fun. Have you been measuring with the tape or BF%? I was up 3 pounds last week, and it stayed this week! BUUUUUT...I lost a BF% this week and a 1/2 inch on my waist. And my legs are much firmer and more defined. So Don't get down about the scale and try to focus on the OTHER good things that are happeneing. I know, this sucks though. Just really hit it hard this week (esp cardio) and hopefully NEXT week we will get the reward on the scale.
If you TRULY have a calorie deficit and really work out and hit your 10s, if you stick it out over the weeks it HAS to work, Its the rule of nature, RIGHT?
Hang in there, girlie! :)
Body for Life Forum Message by YummyMummy (132 posts) at 10:34 AM
ok well now that I have LOOKED again at my profile (loser) it was 1.5lbs not 2.5lbs but STILL. Yes I have measured and I have lost .5 inches off my hips..whooopeee..lol My jeans DO fit better and I feel thinner which is part of the reason why I am pissed! lol I thought the scale would reflect that but NOPE.
I am not giving up..far from it..just down in the dumps and I will pick myself back up
Thank you soo much everyone for your QUICK repsonses!! WOW!! Tracker ROCKS!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (364 posts) at 10:35 AM
Heh... that means it CAN'T be fat you gained. YAY!!!!!
Body for Life Forum Message by FitnessGal4Life (36 posts) at 10:37 AM
Hang in there! My scale says I've "gained weight" too...but if you measure your body fat and take your girth measurments, you may see that you're getting smaller...muscle outweighs fat and takes up less "square footage" than fat does. You may weigh more, but are getting fitter! Don't get discouraged, you will see results if you stick to it.
Body for Life Forum Message by YummyMummy (132 posts) at 11:07 AM

Body for Life Forum Message by YummyMummy (132 posts) at 10:48 PM
ok well MAYBE I have a semi reason for the weight gain/retention....ugh
I have been itching my skin for the past week and a half..thought nothing of it until the last few days where it has been out of CONTROL. So I have DH look at my back and I am covered in hives apparently. So I go to the walk in and I have folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles) and most likely from our hot tub. NICE. So I am guessing since the skin the is largest organ and it is INFLAMMED that I may just be retaining water. I have a rash now all over my arms, stomach and back.
Let's hope after some antibiotics and another clean week that things get back to normal!! lol (crossing fingers)
ok back to itching here....lmao

Alright, got my tax money back (yea baby) so if you could have either a treadmill or Elliptical, which would you choose for your house?????? And Why??????
Body for Life Forum Message by Jmskelton (397 posts) at 11:12 AM
I would ideally choose the elliptical, however, since I am trying to encourage my husband to start BFL, we just purchased a Nordictrack treadmill yesterday. I just enjoy the workout and stride vs. running on a treadmill much less not have to worry about shin splits.
Body for Life Forum Message by J-P-S-524 (162 posts) at 11:13 AM
I would chose Elliptical. Last month I switched my cardio from treadmill to elliptical because I overheard a staff member explaining it to a new member. She said that it is easier on the knees, back, shins, & that the Heart doesn't know the difference. I have found that I am getting better cardio workouts too.
Good luck with the purchase.

I have been lurking on here for quite a while. I enjoy the enthusiasm and comraderie of many of the posters. But being "relatively" new to BFL, but not totally unexperienced, I have a few questions and thoughts that keep running through my mind. I'm thinking of launching a challenge soon. But Just can't get my self commited behind it.
Last year, I tried BFL for the first time. Started at 285# in Jan, got down to 235 by June. But never really completed a challenge. Free days would evolve into ffree weekends, then start over, a week off for vacation. Et Cetera. I would gues for 6 months I lives a BFL lifestyle at 70% level overall. I had dropped 50#, BF dropped some (not a lot maybe 35 to 30%). Felt strong, vibrant, more confident. People definately noticed the change. That felt good.
What happened?? My goal for the year was to get to 220, and at half-way I was at 235. So I thought I could cruise for the rest of the year - well I ended up the year at 268. Sounds not unlike many of the profiles I have read here.
Hard question #1: Does this really work long-term?? I have read SO many profiles, some have been tracking for years, there weight is relatively unchanged. Am I doomed to the same fate? If this program is go great, why arent there a higher percentage of trackers acheiving the great results?? My my looking around, maybe only 20-30% of the profiles I see have had any kind of long-term transformation in physique.
Hard question #2: Is BFL really just designed for those who are mesomorphs, former high-school and colloege atheletes who are 10-20 pounds from ideal weight, who look great in there before pictures, and are just improving on an already great body?? Is there hope for me (text-book endomorph body) at 270# at age 40?? Or are genes, age just taking over. I really can't afford to try again and fail at this point. just being honest.
Thanks for letting me ask a couple of tough questions.
Body for Life Forum Message by Kerry (1183 posts) at 11:46 AM
Hi,
Yes it works- one receives from BFL what one puts into it. Four challenges here and still improving. Not consistantly mind you, but still progessing.
No, BFL should work for just about any one who really commits.
Yours in Health,
Kerry
Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (139 posts) at 11:50 AM
Well, let me be the first to respond.
Hard question/answer/opinion #1: This program DOES work long term. I did quite well, going from 31.1% bf to 19.2% bf and held there from 2002 until I tore my hamstring in 2004. I was unable to do lower workouts at all for almost a whole year. That's why my long term transformation disappeared. If you continue to follow the program, you will continue to either change for the better or remain stable at where you are. I didn't change more because I was extremely satisfied with where I was. Now, I am determined to get back to that point. So, in my opinion, it is something you can do long term...you just have to do it.
Hard question/answer/opinion #2: I was not an athlete in high school or college. I have always been overweight by standards. It only got worse as I got to be an adult. So, if *I* can do it, then anyone can. As long as you are willing to do it, it WILL WORK FOR YOU!!!!
Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!!

I think you raised some very important questions. I too have noticed that some people have great results only to slide back within a year. I don't think it is a problem with the program. I think it is a problem with "programming". I think a lot of people have weight problems because there are underlying issues that cause them to form a mental program that allows them to do self sabatoging behavior.
I believe this can be the turning point for you. If you allow yourself to follow the program and let it "deprogram" your old habits. It is essential to allow this lifestyle to replace your former lifestyle. I think Americans are suffering from this yo yo dieting because at the heart of it, Americans don't want to adopt a new lifestyle. Not really. They want their Crispy Cremes, hamburgers and white bread. But the deal is...once you learn (and from inside really feel what this type of behavior does to your body) you have to turn away from it. Just as someone who quits smoking has to come to terms once and for all that they won't be able to have just a couple now and then.
If you allow yourself to use the 12 weeks as a deprogramming or reprogramming you will be onto a LIFESTYLE that is enjoyed by the fit and sexy. It is as simple as that. You have to think and live like someone who looks like Bill Philips. You can't take on his plan for a short while and then go back to your plan. Your plan produced someone unhappy with his/her body. His plan maintains someone who can't wait for summer and new swim suits.
BTW, there are some folks on Tracker who I am certain will only continue to get stronger and sexier. Linda GETHERDONE. is one such person. She is on a path.
I don't think there is perfection for anyone on this path. Even Kerry said, we all have our freeday that turns into free weekend. We all miss workouts. We all get sick, have other priorities that get in our way from time to time etc.
I consider myself the tortise. I will never have a week, or a challenge that has very noticable change. But I'm planning to see a steady improvement over a very long time (lifetime).
Take the plunge and do C1. Make it your REPROGRAMMING challenge. Allow yourself to really make LIFE long changes in your healthy habits. The only differencce between you and Bill PHilips is a lifestyle. And there is no big secret to his lifestyle. No reason you can't and shouldn't have that same lifestyle.
I know you can do it. go get it!
Body for Life Forum Message by jps2lean (131 posts) at 10:20 PM
I agree that the program can work for anyone and it is possible to maintain long term results. It can't be seen as a "diet", or you will go right back to the way you were before. I did really well before but used my third pregnancy and third c-section as an excuse to not maintain the lifestyle. I went back to the miserable, fat and unhealthy me. This time, I am beginning to accept that I can never eat "normally" and that I will have to maintain this lifestyle for the rest of my life if I want to be healthy and fit. Some people can get by without a strict nutritional and exercise regimen. I am not one of them. This is the way it has to be for me for the rest of my life. Otherwise, I will stay fat and die young. There is no "maintenance plan". This is it. It sounds kind of depressing, but it really isn't. I guess you could say that it is part of crossing the abyss...you can't look back. You can't miss the freedom of eating whatever you want. If you miss it, you will be tempted to return to that pattern of eating. When you feel ready to let go, start your challenge. Your past failures are just that, in the past. You have a whole new future you can create for yourself if you really want it and are willing to change for LIFE.
Body for Life Forum Message by gbfan (388 posts) at 10:48 PM
I am on my 6th challenge. I started at 34% body fat and currently am around 19-20%. I have been EXTREMELY faithful to the program. In the past year and 3 months, I have only missed MAYBE 10 workouts total. My eating is extremely disciplined. I currently eat around 1800 calories a day... that's not bad for someone who follows an eating plan!
The difference for me was that I never expected a 12 week transformation. I knew that I would be slow to respond. So, I told myself to give the program a chance for 1 year. At the end of that year, if I was not 100% satisfied with the program I gave myself permission to try something else.
Let me tell you, I have opportunities daily to share about BFL, because not only has it made such an impact on my life, others can't believe the change it has made in me and want to know about what I'm doing. It's awesome!!
Give yourself ONE YEAR. Make it a priority in your life EVERY DAY for the next 52 weeks. I promise... it works. I am by no means a mesomorph. I have never had definition. But, I am more fit than I have been since having children (19 years ago). I actually think I'm more fit than I've ever been. I am in this for life! I do not post alot but I read the tracker everyday and it has really helped to know that other people go thru the same problems as I do. I use to think I was alone, but finding BFL and this site has really been a huge support!!

Well due to unexpected results from the DEPO shot I took the week off, but I'm back and ready to go. Unfortunately that week cost me 2.4 lbs, but I'm OK with that and ready to move on. It was so strange try to control my meals while my body and mind told me I was STARVING. At one point I though maybe I should start over, but then I realized this is a lifestyle change and things will pop up in the future which will make it difficult to stay on. I understand it and I'm OK with it. I won't fall of the wagon and just give up like I would have in the past. WOW it's amazing how your mindset changes when your ACTUALLY ready to lose the weight.
Thanks for listening.

I was wanting to know if it would be worth sending in my stuff to EAS even though I know I will not win. Do they give anything for just finishing the chanllenge? Like a certifacate or something?
Body for Life Forum Message by bubblz7 (139 posts) at 12:18 PM
They used to give you a certificate for completing and a Tshirt. Not sure what you get these days! I'd absolutely send it in!!!

Thanks Suzanne,
I am not sure on BF% I was using a scale and it was all over the place. I want to figure a better way to measure BF%. I started out thinking I just wanted to lose weight, but now I am getting it this!! I really wish I would have taken measurements too!!! I did not think I would have such good results the first time around.

You completed a terrific challenge. I don't know why you don't think you could will. I see very visible RESULTS!!! CONGRATULATIONS.
I have felt that one of the problems with the contest is that it only measures that 12 weeks. I am so much more impressed in the compilation of many challenges and the people who have had a steady improvement over a long period. I'd like to see a challenge that encompasses a year long period. Aren't these the real champs? Particularly people who manage to keep the progress going in a steady line -- no big slips into weight gain or muscle loss.
I think we should have our own challenge...if EAS doesn't do it. I would LOVE to see everyone strive to have improved photos for this very day NEXT YEAR!!

Thanks Framed!
I agree with you on the long term. That is why I do not feel I could win. I have a long way to go to get a six pack and some definition. Everyone I see that makes the top 15 have defintion and six packs. I have a lot of weight to lose still so that sets me back from other people who have less weight to lose and get that six pack by the end of their first 12 weeks.

I would definitely send it in! In the 2005 challenge, I received a red BFL bracelet from EAS and a certificate, which both mean a lot to me. Actually writing the essay and mailing the paperwork in gave me a huge sense of satisfaction.

Hey everyone..I am posting because I'm really stressed about the SB today. I've already taken my meals off this week ( I take Friday, not Sunday off) so I can't take this afternoon off. Any other week, I'd probably give myself a pass, but I'm at week 8 today and i am still far from my goals, and I just made my appt for my professional wk 12 photos.
I have a really hard time managing social events with food and alcohol. I just want to be able to have a beer, and grab some chips...I feel so much more at ease with food in my hands. I made the BFL enchiladas, so I know that will help, but I'm still nervous.
And I can't ditch SB events; I'm from Pittsburgh so people are really expecting me to be there. I'd kinda just like to stay home.
Anyway, thanks for listening to me vent. Is anyone else feeling nervous about today who doesn't take Sunday off?

Hey, I'm from the 'burgh too... and my opinion is today is nothing short of a holiday. The Steelers in the super bowl is HUGE, and I dont know about you but the party I'm going to is bigger than any Christmas or Thanksgiving I ever have.... SO I am taking a free day. I usually take Friday as well and did so this week. But you know Bill even says to eat whatever you want on a holiday. One day wont kill you. SO.... if your party really is a big deal, stop stressing and enjoy- you did the right thing making the enchiladas, eat them and then be smart about everything else. But dont stress and let it ruin your good time. Tomorrow, get right back on the program. I will be eating my BFL friendly dip but I am not passing on my Sister in Law's meatball hoagies! Hopefully I won't have room for anything else.
GOOOOOOOOOO STEELERS!!!!!

One thing that helps me is not focusing too much on it-like the more I think about what I can eat the hungrier I am! I know that sounds like a really dumb thing to say, but it does work. Have a bite or two of some things, it won't kill you. Complete abstinance may be too much to handle when that inundated. Just tell yourself that you can sample some stuff, but only after you've eaten the BFL enchiladas, and by then you won't be as hungry. Also really taste what you're eating and eat it slowly, then ask yourself if that was enough. I also tell myself when faced with fav foods, "I know what that tastes like and I can always have it another time." Hope that helps some.

I have been so into this challenge. I have been doing a really great job with eating and exercising but there is just one problem. I KEEP ON GETTING SICK! I am only at the end of week 4 and so far I have been sick twice already. In the middle of week 2 I came down with bronchitis and only got 4 days of exercise in. Toward the end of my week four I caught the cold of the century, I mean I feel like total CRAP. So I was only able to exercise 4 days this week as well.
The good news is that I went from a snug size 12 to a comfortable size 10 in only 4 weeks so I know I could have done even better if I didn't get sick twice. Sorry to whine and complain I'm just frustrated and looking for some words of wisdom and advice. Judging by how I feel right now I really don't think I can jump back into week 5 tommorrow. What should I do? Eat BFL but don't excercise and then redo week 5 when I feel better?
Body for Life Forum Message by Janie (24 posts) at 01:56 PM
Hey, what's up?! What part has got you frustrated? I've had my share so maybe I can help with the perspective.
Body for Life Forum Message by Janie (24 posts) at 02:08 PM
What's really helped me is letting go of my perfectionist tendencies- like "if I'm not going to be one of next year's finalists then why bother" kind of thing. It can be very overwhelming trying to do all of this at once. I've had free weekends, I've missed a workout and I just KEEP GOING. Even when I'm not doing it all perfectly I am still making changes and it does take time to rain yourself in a whole new way of thinking. One thing that helped me a ton was to write a list of pros and cons to sticking with this- even if I didn't see the results I wanted when I wanted them. I'm still making progress, and you'll notice that a lot of the wonderful members on here are having the same struggles, so you're in good company. Sometimes I've had 7 meals a day because I am just SO hungry! Sometimes life just throws a curve and I would rather be gracious than get hysterical. That is a big change for me! Talk to us and let's see what we can do to encourage you, okay?
Body for Life Forum Message by Janie (24 posts) at 02:38 PM
I didn't see the whole message when I looked, it only had "frustrated and could cry" showing, so let me add. You are already in a size smaller?! That is GREAT! Don't focus on what "could" have been, be thrilled with what you did accomplish in the face of adversity! You know, life doesn't cooperate and it is insanely frustrating sometimes, but just keep going. Try taking some L-Glutamine, I just read an article in EAS's mag about how your body's immune system gets taxed when you exercise and this supplement will help that a lot. And lots of the champions have siad that 80% of this challenge is the eating part so yes, if you're sick and can't work out then just stay on the eating part and you'll do fine, okay? Brochitis is brutal, I've had it many times, so make sure you take all your antibiotics to kill it. Keep us up to date, okay? And just pick up with the exercise when you feel better. :o)
Body for Life Forum Message by rsim05 (17 posts) at 02:40 PM
Hey Leesaw73,
Don't give up. I got sick just before Christmas and was down for a week. It took me 2 weeks to get back on track. I too almost gave up, but I told myself that I made a promise to finish this challenge. I kept going and before I knew it my 12 weeks were over. I feel better physically and mentally for finishing.
Keep going Don't give up!! If I did it I know you can do it!!
Body for Life Forum Message by J-Dub (364 posts) at 02:50 PM
This is for life, and the fact that you got 4 days of exercise in both times that you got sick is still good. Sometimes we get sick. It's frustrating, and it sucks, but it's part of life. Don't put yourself on a deadline, just do the best you can do, and when you're feeling better, do better!
Congratulations on your success so far. You're obviously working hard at it! Eat clean, and when you're feeling up to it, hit the gym again.

I agree with everyone else that has posted. YOU ARE ROCKIN already! a size in just 4 weeks! WOOOOHOOO!!!!! just look forward and be proud of your clean eating and the workouts you have been doing. If you have to take the next day or two off from the working out oh well just keep your food clean. Remember like Bill says it's about "PROGRESS NOT PREFECTION". Post some week 4 pics so you can compare all of your AWESOME results so far. A size is a BIG difference! YOUR DOING GREAT!!!! Since your sick make sure you drink a TON of water and take your vitamins. You'll be back in the game full swing in no time. ;)

I too have felt more illness in the first 4 weeks than in a long time. It is hard to decide whether it is Sore Muscles or actually a Sore Body due to flu. I have been making progress too but the illness thing was a downer. I told myself "This week I will do 100%" (so I can feel better mentally (first) and physically... I forced myself through and it worked.... I lost 3 lbs and look better. Week 4 sucked... but week 5 rocked. Ellie

I totally know where you are coming from. Last year at this time I was so frustrated because I was up all night coughing every night and felt horrible. It lasted from about mid-December to March and we really couldn't figure out what it was (asthma, allergies, cold, bronchitis? we never knew.)
It all taught me a lot about perseverence. JUST KEEP GOING! I weighed 215 at the begining of last year, and I am now 35 pounds lighter (and am only 10 pounds away from where I was before I started taking those dang fat pills, uh..i mean, prozac.)
I know I would have made more progress if I hadn't been sick, but guess what. It happens. Just don't let it derail your progress or your motivation. If you feel like you can't do your workouts first thing in the morning, try for later in the day. I always felt terrible in the morning, but I felt my best in the evening and was usually able to get a workout in. My advice is to not "do-over" week 5. Life happens. Just KEEP GOING! You won't have a perfect challenge, but you will be able to go back and learn from this challenge! I know I have learned from my challenges! YOU CAN DO THIS! I know it is hard but you can control your eating, which really makes a huge difference! JUST KEEP GOING!
You are so close to your goals. You will make it if you JUST KEEP GOING!! (Do you see a theme here? I hope so!)
Good luck!

I'm crying right there with you. I started my second challenge at the beginning of the new year and by the end of the first week was diagnosed with pneumonia. I took 2 weeks off and did nothing but try to eat well. I restarted my challenge on the 22nd got one great week of working out in and got a cold again. Scared of a pneumonia relapse I took last week off again. I'm going to try again tomorrow to start working out again.
It's been so absolutely frustrating. I agree. I know I'm doing the right thing by letting my body heal and not working out, but it's killing me to know I'm not doing all that I can. I feel like I'm being pulled in too different directions.
I agree with Cookie/Sylvia . . . I took my down time to really look and perfect my goals and I wrote them out, posted them on my fridge told lots of my friends about them and so I feel very accountable now. I've also used this time to work on my diet, not my strong point. I can work out everyday without thinking twice but eating right, doesn't come easy - so this has been a good opportunity for me to work on that as well.
It's just that time of year when illnesses happen, and we just have to accept that to some extent. I just figure if I can stay motivated even during the down times, ya'll better watch out 'caue when I am 100% again there is going to be no touching me!!!!
Don't apologize for whining, we all have our days, sometimes weeks, and that's why we're here . . . to support each other until we do reach our goals.

Hi everyone. I've been following BFL for many months, about to start my fourth 12 week program. At this point it's a lifestyle. I'm taking it slow and have achieved huge results, losing 40 pounds and gaining tons of muscle. I'm not looking to lose much more just maintain what I have and keep living a fit lifestyle. I wish everyone great success!
Anyway, over the past 36+ weeks I've used many different journals to track my progress. I began to create a custom journal based on my experience, one that I feel is far better than anything available. My journal is small, flexible, doesn’t attract attention, has some of the original BFL journal elements but so much more. It's a BFL compatible journal. I hand created many of these and offered them on eBay; they were scooped up instantly with nearly everyone asking to buy more.
I have a larger qty of journals available on eBay again, Item #4610436034. A search for Body for Life journal will find it as well. or click here: Custom BFL Journal
If this post is a problem for the "site-master" I understand if it has to be pulled. If you anything about printing/binding, you'll know at small qty, there is little money in this. Having such great success on the program I really just want to help where I can.
Thanks everyone.

I really want to complete a challenge and look hotter than ever, but I can't seem to eat clean for more than a few days. I don't want to give up on myself but I feel like my sweet tooth is sabotaging me. I want to lose 10 pounds and finish 1 challenge. Any suggestions????

You could maybe start out for a few weeks by making 2 cheat days/meals a week instead of just one. That way your duration between them isn't so long and easier to hit.
For example, you could maybe have wednesday and sunday set up for cheat days. If you can just hold out the 2-3 days in between, then splurge for a meal or 2 on those two days.
Then once you spend more time with the BFL lifestyle, you will notice your body won't crave sweets and junk as much hopefully. At that point you can cut it down to 1 day.
Remember, its a marathon not a sprint. Whatever it takes to get there, even if theyre baby steps, are better than not steps at all.
Good luck! and YOU CAN DO IT!!

That's a great idea. I am such a perfectionist that if I have something small I feel like the day is blown and cheat even more.

What cured my sweet tooth was to go cold turkey.
Look, you've really got to WANT what you're after - do you REALLY WANT to complete a challenge and look hotter than ever? Then CUT OUT THE SWEETS. No whining! Your sweet tooth isn't sabotaging you, YOU are sabotaging you. Get totally clear on what you're after and keep that at the front of your mind. You can be stronger than any piece of candy or cake.
And then, soon enough, putting sugar in your mouth will not hold the same allure that it does now.
(Although I must admit, I do crave chocolate - but I keep that for my one free day.)

I agree with Hot Body- you gotta go cold turkey. And keep yourself busy- I find when I have free time, I raech for sweets when I'm bored!
You can do it. But make your next week even better!

It's probably also helpful to own up to the fact that you are doing this intentionally and that your "sweet tooth" is not like another person who omes and tempts you or makes you do something against your will. Taking responsbility for sabotaging yourself is key. If you don't, if you just quit talking like you're a victim somehow, you'll just never really accept responsbility in a way that will help you achieve what you're capable of. BTW, most people have no trouble doing the workouts--most have trouble NOT DOING the pigouts or sweet rewards!

Hot Mom,
I did two things this challenge that seemed to help. One, is that I made a deal with my hubby for a progressive reward system for not cheating. It starts each Monday and I get a $1 for not cheating and it doubles as the week goes on and if I make a full week without cheating I get $32 to spend on myself (which isn't really any more money for us, since with EFL we don't eat out anymore).
The other is I reached a point mentally (wish I could tell you how it really happened, I'm not sure - beside going to the Expo and meeting and talking to other BFL'ers and BFL Champions) but I am so committed to this program for this, my 2nd challenge, that I just don't even want to cheat . . . I do still have my free day, and I have to tell you that something in my head has just clicked and the junk just doesn't taste as good as it once did. It's lost it's appeal.
Good luck!!!
Laurie

Yeah, like a couple already said, you really have to decide that you WANT IT! You just have to decide that and not let anything stop you period. Once you start going and feel the results, you won't have a problem resisting the urges. Your mind is much more powerful than a pair of twinkies...so to speak. =)

Focus on today. Promise yourself that you are going to make it through TODAY without any sweets. When you are successful, smile and focus on the next day. When you get up, PROMISE yourself that you make it through the day without any sweets. Don’t try to focus on 12 weeks without sweet. Focus on today… ONE day at a time! And make a promise publicly, like on here, that you’ll go one day without sweets. Then let us know how your day went. Believe me, these folks will help you keep your promise!
Good luck and you can do it… promise! TJ

There are a few things you can do to stay on plan and "trick" your sweet tooth into thinking it's satisfied.:) If you don't have EFL, I recommend it, first of all. There are desserts in it, like strawberry cheesecake, that totally helped me get through my first challenge. And chocolate protein pudding, too. MAN when I have a chocolate craving, that fixes it every time. And it's GOOD! Also, they're not ideal, but protein bars can be helpful, too.
You can definitely do this, and it IS mind over matter, but sometimes you have to help your mind along a little too. :)

I remember seeing something in print, something about doing BFL for 3 days, freeday..3 days-freeday...etc..etc..
Still adds up to the same over all.

I totally agree with J-Dub!
I just made up my menu for the next couple of weeks, and I planned for the moments when I know I need certain things - - my morning shake will be a Cappuccino Strength which includes 2 tsp of instant coffee for that morning jolt that I need! My mid afternoon meal is some sort of fruit with cheese since I can eat it on the run, and it gives me a taste of sweetness. But I really want to nibble on sweets in the evening once my kids are in bed, so I've planned for chocolate pudding, chocolate mousse, banana cream pudding, and strawberry cheesecake as my sixth meals! All of these recipes are in the EFL book!

I know that if I have something sweet even once, it sends me on a downhill spiral. I CAN'T have it at all. If I want something sweet, I have a low-carb Myoplex bar and it'll have to do. I had to go cold turkey from refined sugar. One taste and I'm done for. That's just me, but the longer I go without it, the less I crave it. I know that some people argue that carb addiction is not possible, but I think refined sugar addiction is reality. It's like a person trying to quit smoking. They let themselves have one cigarette and they end up smoking the whole pack. Just say no! :)

Hi, I wanted to let y'all know how I've done so far. I don't have any pics so you'll have to judge from my stats. I have lost 15.2 lbs of bodyfat and 1 lb of muscle. Should I worry about that one pound of muscle lost? I have also misplaced 14" Where did it go? Oh well, I am certainly not going to try to find it! lol
Thanks for all the motivation and support you have given me so far!
I have figured out that I have to lose about 15 lbs to drop a clothing size. That means that at my goal weight, I should wear a size 8. That'll be wonderful! BTW, does anyone know if a big framed, 5'8" tall woman can wear below an 8? I have never been that small before (maybe when I was 6!) and I am wondering if it is even possible.

I dont get an arvo tea break at work which means 6 hours between lunch and dinner, so I pack a protein shake (long life) and sneak it in to help me reach my 6 meals a day.

Can someone with the AccuFitness Fattrack Caliper help me?
I know WHERE, and technically "how" to take the measurements... but am unsure how hard you are supposed to be pinching the skin? If I really squeeze/pinch down with those calipers ...it tends to reduce the reading. However if I just pinch the skin moderatly and lightly place the calipers to take the reading - I get a higher reading.
So how hard are we supposed to be pinching here?

A search for Body for Life journal will find it as well. or click here:
Custom BFL Journal
If this post is a problem for the "site-master" I understand if it has to be pulled. If you anything about printing/binding, you'll know at small qty, there is little money in this. Having such great success on the program I really just want to help where I can.
Thanks everyone.

Hey Amigo, I'm sure your intentions are good but you're treading in dangerous waters there. Your journals are definitely in danger of copyright issues, no doubt about it. You might want to think twice about selling those on ebay. And if I was the admin of this site, I would yank this thread out of here.
Not to mention you can get the journals for free on bodyforlife.com Not a cool thing trying to make a buck off of somebody elses Idea.
Just my 3 cents.
Body for Life Forum Message by crazyblonde78 (343 posts) at 11:07 PM
I agree with Boise. These journal pages are for the body for life users and are available ONLY from the website. To copy the idea and sell is NOT a good idea. Be very careful, you can get into some mega trouble for selling copyrighted info.
You probably had good intentions behind this, however, you may want to think twice about it.
My 3 cents also.
