I'm so bummed about the Smith machines being couterweighted. I thought I made amazing gains in strength because I wasn't worried about not having a spotter. I'll have to check the machine at the gym to see if it is counterweighted.
Thanks for ruining my weekend!

Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1039 posts) at 07:42 PM
I KNOW!!! I have been counting it at 45 all along. Funny thing is though, even knowint it was 15, I still did the same amount, bumped it up so the number was the same. I added more weight and could still do it. It's all in my head. I need to buckle down and really find my 10's. How many weeks have I been saying that???

I should start adding the weight of the bar when I write down how much I lift, just for bragging rights. My teen boys love to brag how much they can lift. I love it when I have them try an exercise I am doing with the weight I used and they can't lift it. It gives them a new respect for mom. My 16 yr old said he is proud of me for improving myself. I asked him what he thinks my bar weighs and he thought 10lbs, I thought 8.

I try to eat as much organic as possible but sometimes its hard because the grocery store that I usually shop at doesn't carry much so I have to drive about 20 minutes. I should eat more though.
Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (41 posts) at 09:01 PM
I go organic wherever possible. I do it for the health benefits absolutely, and when it comes to my meat and chicken for the animal welfare aspects as well.
Sometimes there isn't always the organic choice at the supermarket. There are a couple of places that will deliver organic fruit and vege once a month which I must sign up for.
Body for Life Forum Message by Hot Body (419 posts) at 11:23 PM
I started eating organic long ago, mainly for the benefits to our environment and the small farmer. Now, like you, I eat as much organic as possible because I want only the best for this body.
Check this out if you haven't already come across it in your research:

I use CLA and think it helps. Also use Betegen but going to finish what I have and then just take L-glutimine Also use Tight, Multi fish oil, and vitimans. As well.

I used it in my first challenge and thought it worked, who knows, it could have been my diet change as well. I quit using it though cause I went for a mammogram, yep I'm at that age, and I had cysts so I stopped it. I would like to start taking it again just to see for one if it does help with fat and to see if it was hte cause of cysts.

I know that creatine is scientifically backed by studies but I can't seem to find anything on CLA. I am kind of weary about alot of supplements because more than anything they have a placebo effect and your body reacts because you think or want it to. In that case its still good because it can't hurt but they are expensive so do your research first. On that note, I am not opposed to learning more about CLA, does anyone know if there are any studies on it? Thanks and good luck!

time2change. Marriage is a lot of work, and so is any relationship. You always have to consider how others feel, how your actions will effect them etc. Marriage is a lot of work, but with huge rewards. At times I look at my husband's darn underpants on the floor and wonder what the heck??? Then I see him reading, playing, or just loving my son, and remember why I love him so much. So I pick up the underpants, and put them in the hamper. Life is all about balance, give and take ;)
I always tell my son when he feels bad. Go ahead and go through your emotions, but when you are done remember to see the good in life. Along with listing the bad, list all the good. Balance:)

I suffer insominia. And I'm suffering now, *extends sympathy*, and it's so annoying! I find that taking a short walk around the block usually works, all that fresh air. Lavender oils, or a bath/shower with lavender shower gel helps lots. Another thing that helps is a milky drink before bed. I find that a milky cup of tea and a small carb, (two/three tablespoons of porrige/oatmeal with warm milk, eaten slowly with a teaspoon), before bed really makes your eyelids heavy. I think a lot of insomniacs suffer because they exercise too late in the evening, and they go to bed hungry.

Finally someone else with the same sleep problems. I've always looked at insomnia as not being able to fall asleep. I have absolutely no problem with that; the problem is staying asleep for more than 3 or 4 hours. I wake up like an alarm clock - totally refreshed, ready to face the day. At that point there is absolutely no option of falling back asleep. It catches up with you during the day and thats where the problems start with me. When its noon and your ready to sleep again and you've got family life going on it can really get to you. A definate plus side is getting workouts done first thing in the morning.

Does anyone else struggle to find the right present for certain people on their list?? I tell you, I can never figure out what to get my in-laws and my parents. They are at the point in their life where they have everything they need, if they don't they go out and buy it, which leaves me stumpted at Christmas time and trying to come up with something. So here is my question, I'm on the verge of getting almost everyone a gift card to a place where I know they will use it, but I feel guilty like I should be going through more effort...so tell me, would you rather have a well thought out gift (even though you may not like it) or a gift card to your favorite store for a purchase at a later date? Be honest!!! Personally, I would rather have the gift card.
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (565 posts) at 09:57 PM
I don't think so. Honestly, I love getting gift certificates! If you want to put a little creativy in it so it's more personalized, you can make little gift baskets with little things, and I do this all the time.
Like for my boss one year, we all pitched in and got him a gift certificate for Bass Pro Shoppe. But I made a basket and filled with little things like fishing lures, hooks, bobbers, etc.
And then another...a movie gift certificate surrounded by some of their favorite candy, a box of popcorn, a cute popcorn bowl, and some of their favorite drinks.
I do this often when I get stumped and my baskets have always been hits!
Jennifer
Body for Life Forum Message by anavywife (132 posts) at 09:57 PM
I would rather get a gift, and then if I dont like it return it...I am on the side of only giving gift cards to people I dont know well just because I want the people I care for most to know that I cared enough to at least think of something they might enjoy having. This is just me, my husband is the total opposite and would get a giftcard for everyone on our list if I werent here to help shop!!! He sees nothing wrong with giving giftcards to EVERYONE:) Hope it helps
Crystal
Body for Life Forum Message by tonee (99 posts) at 10:06 PM
Tinkerbell I don't think that gift cards are thoughtless. I give them all the time. Especially for people who has everything and kids love to go shopping for there own stuff.
And Jennifer's idea is an excellent one, I do it all the time and people love the baskets. Just make sure the card reflects their interest.
Tonya
Body for Life Forum Message by SportyGirl (41 posts) at 10:11 PM
Jennifer I love your gift basket idea!!
I always feel reluctant to get gift cards, feeling they're not personal enough. But this idea makes it so personal and thoughtful.
I remember once getting a great christmas pressie from my grandparents. They'd asked what I wanted for chrismas and I'd told them about a particular CD I really wanted. My grandmother didn't think that was quite personal enough so sent the CD with a batch of homemade shortbread - my favourite!!! It was so sweet of her and made the present a bit more special.
So maybe another option for family members is to add their favourite home made treat. I know sometimes as BFL'ers it goes against the grain to give unhealthy stuff, but we can always think of it as their free day too :-)
Donna
Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (565 posts) at 10:16 PM
His and Hers baskets are really cool to do too. I did this once for my grandparents because they are so hard to shop for! My grandpa loves Best Buy and could live in there for hours! So I got him a gift certifate and filled the basket with his favorite treats that grandma won't let him buy! And I made one for her with a gift certificate from her favorite department store and filled the basket with little things she likes to do like crossword puzzles, a cool deck of cards (she's a solitare addict!) and another little game that she could enjoy showing her bridgeclub buddies!
Body for Life Forum Message by SweetEmotion (1039 posts) at 10:24 PM
It depends, if it is someone you are close to then a gift works, but if it's someone like a distant relative or neighbor or soemthing like that someone you don't know what they would like then a gift certificate works. It jsut depends on the person I think. Some people like my mom are real particular about their things and would just rather pick something out.

Imagine if you could be there, in the room with them... six amazing people who've had the determination to achieve extraordinary results.
And imagine what it must be like for them - I bet with the adrenaline kick they could almost hit a 10 just sitting still up front during those press conferences! :-)
I just want to send a big "good luck" to all the finalists, especially our friends on tracker, for what must be a crazy, hectic, and truly exciting time!!!
And I hope you have fun and enjoy this amazing once-in-a-life opportunity.

Dips that emphasize the chest are best done with the head down on the chest, body straight, and elbows splayed outward about 45 degrees or so and quite deep repetitions. For triceps emphasis they are done with elbows tucked in, head up and you can do regular or deep dips. One last thing: They can be dangerous if you have weak areas. I tore my supraspinatus tendon completely off the head of the humerus about 3 years ago while doing them. It was already partially frayed, so it didnt take all that much force, but I had gotten to the end of my last set and was kind of rocking back and forth to struggle up from a deep dip--when I felt a rather sickening "give away" sensation in my shoulder along with hearing a tearing sound. It required surgery of course and put me out for about 6 months because of complications from an infection. Today, though, they are one of my favorite exercises along with pullups.

I feel fine but I am turning white as a ghost, If i was overdoing it I would be red in the face but I'm not, I'm totally white, I never had this happen to me before I started this elliptical machine, am I just over doing it,?
my color comes right back a min after I stop,

Do your lips turn blue as well? If so your body isn't pumping enough oxygen around your body to feed your muscles, hence the blood travels to the muscles you're working on which need the most oxygen to function, (your legs in this case), and away from your face. In doing so your face will look paler because you have substansially LESS blood pumping into it. Try taking it down a notch until your fittness level improves.

I have never noticed that happen to anyone. Even in cold weather, I come back from my outdoor cardio with flushed cheeks and sweat dripping. Do you feel like you are going to black out? That would definately be a sign that you may be pushing it past lvl 10. I'm not sure what to think of the paleness.

Anastasia...my family is like yours. There are days my husband would rather jab himself in the neck with a pencil than eat another piece of chicken.
I usually cook for myself in bulk twice a week. I'll barbeque chicken, steak and tuna to keep on hand along w/ chopped salads in ziplock bags, fresh cooked brocolli or green beans that only need warming and batches of brown rice or baked sweet potatoes. I supplement w/shakes.
For my family, they can choose to either join me (which they do often), OR I keep easy stuff for them on hand. Chicken tenders, pizza, shrimp poppers...all the frozen stuff that can be fixed in less than 20 minutes. I also only buy individual portions of sweet or salty snacks. I won't buy bulk items or large bags.

I always have a lot of homemade frozen meals ready to nuke. Lately, I've been freezing single ingredients so that I can combine things in various ways. For example, Sam's Club has an institutional size can of crushed tomatoes that is wonderful to use instead of spaghetti sauce. It has better flavor than most spaghetti sauces. And so, I divided it up into single servings and froze these as little bricks. It's really handy. I also make sandwiches ahead and freeze them. We have to use bread that will yield the correct macronutrients, however. I always have frozen berries for cottage cheese milk shakes. Soy flour has a lot of protein and I like to work it into recipes. A&W Diet Root Beer is good for sugar cravings. Oh, and color, color, color from the produce department. I always have raw vegetables and fruit of all colors ready to eat. I shop by color. The more colors, the better. Chomp, chomp, chomp. Peppermint herbal tea makes my water go down easier. I get cheap imitation kool-aid (LOL...I buy the imitation that imitates kool-aid which imitates fruit juices) from Aldi store to add to water, also, just for more interest. I usually don't even add sweetener...just like the bite of it, I guess.

hey look what I did! LOL I updated my measurments on my profile for the end of week 5..I lost 1.5 inches on my waist since week 1, gained an inch (I think) on my chest and thighs, and gained a quater of an inch on my biceps (unflexed)!
I dont know if I'll get my bf tested today or not, I tried to contact the person who does that at my gym but I never got an answer back, but I'll bet its gone down a hair or two, hopefully anyway!
But Im pleased with the results!

I think I feel a much bigger difference than I can see but I know the changes will come. They are slow with this program because we're actually losing fat, which I know takes time. I think the biggest difference I can see from weeks 2 to 4 are in my side and back photos. My butt is finally moving north! YAY!!!! :)

For lower body, I warm up with the sled doing leg presses with 45s on each side. Then I do one set with 2 45s on each side. For my last few sets, I do drop sets where I put 10-12 10 lb. plates on each side and do as many as I can. Then I strip one 10-lb. plate from each side and do as many as I can. I strip again, do as many as I can... you get the idea. I go down until I can barely lift the sled itself. It takes a while but my legs are dead. I finish up with leg extensions & hamstring curls using fairly light weight but squeezing the heck out of my legs until they feel like they're on fire. Calves are last.
I don't do the same thing every time. The next time I do lower body, I might do deep squats instead of the sled and then do Romanian (bent knee) deadlifts for my hamstrings and glutes. Those are my absolute favorite!! :) Some days I'll do walking lunges, other days I do step-ups. I keep trying new things so I don't get bored. Basically, I pick one heavy exercise for the major muscles and do as much weight as I can, I then do drop sets to finish off. All other exercises for individual muscle groups after that are just icing. Hope that helps!
Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (226 posts) at 12:17 PM
Thanks that's great!
I'm looking for some new exercises to really challenge myself. Got my LBWO tomorrow so I'll give it a good go. Be warned though, if I have to pee standing up after I've finished I'm blaming you! ;) lol
Thanks again,

Wow - impressive changes - especially in such a short time!
Hope you don't mind me asking - what does a typical eating day look like for you, and do you take a free day/meals??
As you can probably tell from all the questions, we're very impressed! :-)
Body for Life Forum Message by biojen (117 posts) at 02:50 PM
Sorry this is such a long post. I'm going to try to hit your questions.
You guys are so generous with your compliments. Thank you so much. I had no idea I was really doing all that well. I feel great and I feel incredibly strong but I just don't see the changes as much as everyone else seems to. I'm really not doing anything different with BFL than most people probably do aside from not following the weight training routine exactly. As far as my eating goes, I have 5 solid meals ("fuelings") a day and my 6th meal is protein powder with Carb Countdown skim milk. This is a sample day for me:
Meal 1: 1/2 c. multigrain hot cereal (mixture of oats, barley, rye and wheat) w/ 1 scoop vanilla protein & some Splenda.
Meal 2: 3/4 c. lowfat cottage cheese & a brown rice cake, slice of tomato
Meal 3: whole wheat tortilla roll-up w/ 3 slices turkey, 1 slice lowfat cheese, fresh spinach.
Meal 4: Myoplex Lite Bar
Meal 5: (Dinner w/ family) Stir-fry w/ frozen veggies (pea pods, soybeans, water chestnuts, carrots, broccoli, shiitake mushrooms), tofu or chicken breast, 1/2 c. brown rice
Meal 6: Protein powder w/ Carb Countdown skim milk
My last "meal" doesn't come until 10:00 or later sometimes so I am trying to stay away from the carbs now. Up until 4 days ago, I was having oatmeal w/ protein in the evenings and then going right to bed. I've decided to get rid of that. My water intake is pretty good although it is in the form of hot tea most of the time. My classroom at school is cold and sipping hot tea all day keeps me from being hungry or wanting to snack. I like to buy the dessert teas like Vanilla Caramel or Chai and add Splenda and a splash of Carb Countdown skim. I probably drink 20 cups of decaffeinated tea a day on top of my other fluid intake.
To answer the question on deadlifts, I don't like the stiff-legged ones as much as the Romanian ones but I use the same weight for both. I use an olympic bar (45 lbs.) plus 15 on each side for a total of 75 lbs. I've only done them maybe three times since I started a month ago but they make my hams & glutes feel soooo tight. Moreso than just about any other exercise.
Oh- I forgot... free day... hmmmm... I do take a free day from the gym but as far as eating goes, not really. Thursday was supposed to be my free day but I moved it to today since I have to go with my husband to a board dinner tonight and I don't really have a choice over what they serve. I'm eating clean all day just in case it's bad tonight. Even so, I probably won't have dessert or I'll ask for some fresh fruit like berries rather than having what they're serving (probably something like flourless chocolate torte or mousse). I also won't eat any bread or potatoes if they're white.
Hope that helps! Good luck to all of you- stay strong! :)Jen

Wasn't quite sure where to post this one. Sorry if it's in the wrong area.
What is Bill Phillips doing now adays? Its my understanding that he sold EAS, and shortly thereafter, I got a notice that Muscle Media was being shut down, and they refunded what was left of my subscription. Even his EFL website has articles about him that are rather old.
Anyone know?

He got married recently and is working on his Transformation TV show, not sure when it will air, maybe early 2006? He also has a new supplement line out. I think it's called "Right!" Eating For Life shakes/bars, etc.

The tracker is really important. I tried this porgram about 6 times now and four were succesfull but bumpy. It is so much easier with this site to use as a crutch.
Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (36 posts) at 05:40 PM
i really should start planning more. I have never used a journal or preplanned. I made it through a couple of challenges that way but planning sure seems like it would be easier.
Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (226 posts) at 11:02 AM
As most if not everyone knows, I'm not measuring or weighing myself until the end of this challenge. However, that's not to say that I'm not seeing results. Just to prove to those who think that they're not gaining anything from the program, I'm here to point out that you probably are.
People start this challenge trying to improve, if not completely transform the biggest issues they have with their bodies. Abs, legs, arms, back fat....Sound familiar?
When I first started I was chanting, "smaller arse, flatter tum, smaller arse, flatter tum." Well, I'm disapointed to say that no....My arse is still a big, wobbly, the rhino has escaped quick shoot it with a dart-sized problem it always was, and my tum has yet to see dramatic progression.
But I realised that this constant looking and prodding has detered me from looking at the other areas of my body that I've been working hard on.
Last night my boyfriend and I were getting ready to go out, and he turned to me and said, "Wow, you've got a space between your legs now, look!....Even when they're together!...Oh my god, look at your arms when you put your dress on over your head! You can see so much deffinition! Your legs look incrdible in those heals!"
Well, we were about 40 minutes late for the party lol, because I was stood flexing and posing in front of the mirror for a good 20, and wasn't ready even when the taxi had arrived!
Now I'm 4 weeks in, and I reaslise that in fact, I have come one hell of a long way in the last few weeks. I just wasn't seeing it because I was concentrating on my flaws. I urge eveyone to stand in front of the mirror, and look at each area of their bodies, bit by bit. I garuntee you'll see more good points than bad points, and will give you more determination to stick with the program.
I hope everyone has a great today!

You never lose it where you want it! I have beautiful arms (compared to how they used to look) but my butt. . . .Waaaaaaaaaahhhh!! I've definitely changed. I just wish my butt would shrink faster than say. . .oh, my chest!

PS well done!

Congratulations on a job well done. I had to laugh about you being late because you were posing, looking in the mirror. I do that too. Too many times we focus on the flaws and don't realize everything else that's good about us, which outweighs those flaws. Keep up the good work.

Great post Rock-Chick!!
I have been focused on my rather sizeable butt and flabby tum, and they really don't look any different to me, but this week my jeans are feeling looser, yayyy!
This is an amazing feeling for me. My jeans have been getting consistently tighter for the past three years, until they get so uncomfortable (and embarrasingly tight) that I buy a bigger size. This of course makes me feel so down it triggers an ice-cream eating binge which gets me on a great head start to the next size up!
This feels amazing - I've finally turned a corner.
And great work on the legs and arms!! You must have hit that party on such a BFL-high! :-)
Body for Life Forum Message by Rock-Chick (226 posts) at 06:34 PM
Good one girls! Keep looking at the good points, the bad ones might be lagging but they'll catch up with the rest of you in the end!
I've been so down on my bad points, (we all seem to have the same ones reading your posts), that I've neglected all the positive things I've acheived. It's important to have a positive self image...Since starting BFL there are more things I've grown to like about my body, and I know there will be many more to come.
Good luck girlies. Find something beautiful about yourself every day, and stay healthy.

Worcestershire sauce has soy sauce in it as well as other ingredients and its good with lots of things. I have used it instead of soysauce in a stirfry when I was out and couldn't get to the store. The tuna cakes sound yummy, I'm writing down the recipe. Robin
