I like the zig zag approach but also remember you need enough food to build a little more muscle to raise your metabolic rate or at least keep it the same. Eat two to three hours and try carb depletion at night time... Hope this helps

Thread: Why am I in Pain? (92 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (118 posts) at 02:51 PM: Why am I in Pain?
I don't understand, everytime I do my LBWO using my free weights, anything over 15 lbs literrally pains my hands so bad, I want to cry!! I use lifting gloves, proper form, and never experience this pain during my UBWO. I just dont get it? Am I the only one who's hands are suffering during squats?

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (735 posts) at 02:54 PM:
How do you do your squats? Smith machine or free weights? How are you holding the bar?

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (118 posts) at 03:14 PM:
I use free weights and follow the BFL book. set1: 10lbs set2:15lbs set3:20lbs set4:25lbs set5:20lbs set6:15 or 20lbs mind you that's in each hand, so really I'm squating 2x the lbs listed. Holding them just like the girl in the book. I use a mirror and check my form, which seems to be great. I feel it in my lower body where I should, unfortunatly, I feel a lot of pain in my hands as well.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (735 posts) at 03:21 PM:
Okay, I think I know your problem. Your grip strength is not as strong as your legs thus your hands are giving out before your legs are. Have you tried using just the bar instead of dumbells? YOu might want to look into lifting straps if you cant squat the bar.

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (735 posts) at 03:35 PM:
I would also like to commend you for squatting. A lot of people fear this exercise which is a big mistake in my opinion. Im not sure how much money you want to spend but here is the pair of lifting straps I just bought. They work really well and I think they will solve your problem.

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (591 posts) at 03:41 PM:
Thanks for sharing that Chuck. I have a similar problem with DB squats. Not so much pain in my hands but just the inability to hold enough weight to really give my legs the workout they need. I was considering switching to machines or the squat rack thingy.

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (118 posts) at 03:44 PM:
thank you chuck, who knew such a product existed! And I think your right about the strength issue. I so appreciate your response :)

Body for Life Forum Message by chuckdiesel99 (735 posts) at 04:10 PM:
Glad I could help. I have the same problem with barbell/dumbell shrugs, thats why I bought those straps. To anyone else out there reading this, I would advise against squats in the smith machine because it forces you into an unnatural form. This could lead to injury if you go for too much weight. I only do squats with a barbell in a power rack. The smith machine also limits the development of stabalizer muscles. Doing them like snowboardingfairy and Moggie is the way to go if you cant squat an empty barbell with good form.

Thread: Another Betagen question.. (34 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by snowboardingfairy (118 posts) at 09:06 AM: Another Betagen question..
Reading past posts, I've notice that many people take Betagen and CLA, my question is : Is the CLA already in the Betagen, or is it another supplement? Second, is EAS the only people who make Betagen, what about CLA? Is there a superior brand of CLA? Or is CLA all the same and just bottled differently? Last question ( I swear) Whats the best website to purchase these products at a cheaper rate?

Body for Life Forum Message by ocpanther65 (137 posts) at 05:00 PM:
Well, CLA (conjucted lineolic acid) is not in Betagen. It can be taken in a pill (usually two pills, twice daily). This product has been shown to increase fat loss and is found naturally in red meat. Betagen is a mixture of creatine and HMB. Creatine is also found in red meat and is present in everones bodies. Creatine has been shown to increase strength, HMB aids in muscle recovery so Betagen is great to take right before and right after a work out. You could hypothetically take creatine and HMB separate and get similar effects. EAS is the only company that I am aware of that manufactures Betagen but there are many companies that make CLA. Make sure that the CLA that you get is called Tonalin CLA as there are different sources. Any good company that you go with is fine, I take vitamin worlds. As far as getting the products cheap I am not sure where you should go. I usually get mine at GNC when its gold card tuesday or at vitamin shoppe or world when they are on discount.

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (746 posts) at 12:00 PM:
*twinmom! Good to see you again!* These are such great stories! My husband and daughter are my greatest gifts, no doubt about it. We did not struggle a bit in having our daughter -- as so many do. But we are thankful every day that we are so blessed. She is healthy, happy and thriving and is a peach the majority of the time.

Body for Life Forum Message by justdoit (198 posts) at 01:01 PM:
I am so moved by everyone's stories. I feel like we get to know each other on so many levels when a post like this is started. (thanks amkazen) I have so many cherished gifts. I feel a little guilty when I start to list them because in the course of a day I seem to forget so many of them. We all have stressful days and we need to remind ourselves of our blessings. 1. My parents, who are there for me unconditionally. (They have my children this weekend while I get over a virus.) 2. My husband and his 8 months of sobriety. (He may not have made the list last Christmas!!) He has given me back the man I married 13 years ago. 3. My 6 1/2 year old son. He has special needs that keep me busy, but he has the gift to not notice ANY differences between people. He doesn't ask why people are in wheelchairs, walk with canes, talk by signing, have different skin colors, etc. He never notices if people are dirty or smell. He loves people. He wants to hug every one!!! He has made parents with children in wheelchairs cry because he went right up to their children, hugged them and ask how they were doing today. He tells them that they are beautiful. He is a gift to me and the world. 4. My 3 1/2 year old daughter, who is dramatic, entertaining, sassy, graceful, beautiful, bossy, and very moody. She reminds me that not everybody is happy all of the time! 5. My 3 1/2 year son (yes they are twins!), who laughs 95% of his life. He reminds me to find humor in everything. He has two switches: OFF and RUN!!! He never does anything slowly. He makes it difficult to fuss because he giggles even when he is punished. This thread made me sit down and remind myself of the things I cherish. I always feel like my life goes a million miles an hour. I stopped to remember why I do what I do. Thanks

I am in Dallas, Texas and OF COURSE the stereotypes are that we all ride horses and wear cowboy hats and have really big hair. haha. A few weeks ago, I met a guy at a bar and he was from England. It was his first time in Texas and he made this exact comment: "I thought everyone would have on cowboy hats and be riding horses!" I guess he was pleasantly suprised that we're actually "normal" here. haha. Now, we do have the word "ya'll" in our vocabulary. I was friends with a guy from Canada and he could just not get over that word!! haha. Of course, I had to make fun of his "eh?" ;)

Today we got up, went and picked up some pictures at the Exhange and I noticed he wasn't eating much, actually not at all, he picked and then thru it down, didn't even want to drink his Orange Juice, which he loves,, and most of the morning, I knew something was going on, so I checked his temp, 99.8, ok there went the first suppository, then it jumped to 102 and off we went to the ER. He has pneumonia! Ok what else? He is sleeping now, hopefully all night even through these assholes blasting their music across from me... I really don't like them at all! If he doesn't like the bubble gum, the pharmacy can mix up just about any flavor to mask the meds. I suppose smearing it all over his face and hands won't work the way it does with cats. ;-)

Panther ... can I call you that? ... good post. Intriguing points. Well-written. Personally, I don't consider myself an armchair warrior -- well, not by choice. This past year I went from being a career gal to a stay-at-home mom in a new (somewhat unwelcome) city. I came to this site a year ago just for BFL knowledge -- like you described. In little time, I made some of the best friends I have ever had. I don't say that in defense of group mentality -- cliques or the like. I guess I say it a bit in defense regarding your strong words about getting a life for those to seem to find one here. And for the most part, the friends I have made weren't into the topics new people seem to be bonding over. Our off-topic threads were often about children or spouses or parents or childhood troubles -- all aspects of life that either affect our BFL efforts or were the cause of the physical ailments we are trying to overcome. But even during those times, some folks were annoyed with the off-topic conversation. They weren't part of the group, didn't want to be part of the group, and used the same argument we're using here: this is a fitness site. There were arguments, sometimes heated. Then there was anonymous trolling. Some people would leave, which their friends would decry -- just like now. And other people just quietly drifted away. It's a cycle that likely won't stop. If you suffered through all of the Matrix series, it's probably a bit like that: this has all happened and will continue to happen. Anyway ... I guess I just wanted to say, nicely, don't tell me to get a life because I've made friends online. With cyber relationships, you get what you give. :-) And I give you good karma for being proactive and thoughtful.

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (800 posts) at 08:30 PM:
Well, I thought that was a really good post. Brought up some good points. Though I have to disagree with the friends subject. I have met quite a few people on here and talk to some via phone quite a bit. And I do consider us great friends and I know if I had the money I would visit them. I have even met one in person. So yea I am friends with them and I consider them to be very good friends. Also, I was in the same boat as Supa K moved to a place (neighborhood in my case) that really was not so welcoming & hard to make friends. Not to mention my friends that I did have thought I was oingo boingo nutso for wanting to change my life and *gasp* join a gym. Some were down right negative nellies that I choose not to hang around because I was changing my life-style. I found support, help, knowledge, and yes some fun OT (not the crude crazy ones) subjects that friends would normally share about life. I mean it is Body-for-LIFE. And I do love to workout and talk the next persons ear off about it but I also like to share some things that are going on in my life. I don't think I am armchair warrior. I am just home a bit more because I have a 2 year old and now that I am dieting for competition I use the computer as a tool of distraction and research. So to say you can't make friends on here and that we need to get a life was kinda a bold statement. I am not offended I just wanted to let you know that there are some great friendships that have been created here. I do agree with pretty much most of your post. I really do. Because quite frankly I agree this should be for support of fitness and any kind if a member needs it. Now I don't have to name examples of what is annoying I am sure we all know what those are. And they have had more than there fair share of attention.

PERSEPHONE! You've got to lay off that Yorkshire pudding in order to see your toes again! There's actually a physio-geometric formula to figure it out. Essentially, the square root of the number of calories of Yorkshire pudding taken times pi, (3.14) and divided by the number of the month of the date of your birth will give you the approximate number of days that it will take you to see your toes again--without the assistance of a mirror--OR A MAGNIFYING GLASS!

Body for Life Forum Message by willowgerl (207 posts) at 09:51 AM:
I agree with Supa K - I think "G" is a bit much. I don't think profanity is always indicative of a weak mind at work. I tend to think of it as a really strong spice; used judiciously by a talented cook it can have an interesting effect in the right dish. Used liberally in any old dish it just ruins the taste of everything. But, it can often be a sign that the person using it has run out of rational arguments. And I don't personally find that offensive, just amusing.

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2028 posts) at 01:27 PM:
As with the above, I can't stress enough with typing just how excellent willowgerl's comment was. I'm not jumping on the "bandwagon" but really folks could anyone have said it better. Willowgerl's comments are dead on and if we all had half a brain we would realize that & leave it at that. But oh no, we won't be doing that will we. Are we really going to start sensoring? What if a person just slightly steps over the PG13 line? This is really so ridiculous. While I might not say fuck'em as kmachate says because I have learned the hard way - it has no impact other than to ostracize myself. But at the same time I can't help but go back to what has been said in the past - simply put - adult language being offensive? How, just how are you people that are so deeply offended by such, dealing with the real world? Where are your jobs? Have you been exposed to the real world? Don't start yapping about you don't need to use that kind of language to get your point across, blah, blah, blah. Of course you don't, its just the 21st century and thats just the way it is, lets all get a grip.......please. I'm all over the place, I know this but debating such issues just boggles my mind. Again, I'm all over the place but another couple things that crossed my mind - the movie Pulp Fiction would be considered an awful movie by some? Does anyone really (I mean really) know what that movie is about? Are you so very offended by the terrible language that you missed the point????? For the "holier than thou" people if you missed it you missed something big. - it has something way more to offer than crude language used creatively. If you need an explanation as to what you missed, I will gladly enlighten you. As far as "kids" seeing this. I don't think kids belong here. Its an adult forum. Kids should be out playing - running, jumping, biking, skating, rollerblading - something physical not sitting on their fat asses (like us!) searching a computer looking for support in having to loose weight because of what our screwed up society has taught them as far as eating habits. michiganmike - I like you and respect you, but to say what he has said is shocking, its not, just common every day things that are said. I don't have a problem with PG13, if I want a juvenile site I'll go to nickkids.com or nicleodeon.com or disney. It its x rated or r rated as long as its somewhat funny, creative or at least whitty I'm okay. This post is to be just read and considered, not judged. For the love of God, give me the strength to just shut-up and watch LOL. There's got to be others that are feeling the same as me. Tracey

This is really a waste of time. I have never posted in one of these discussions before and I won't be back to read any more of this stuff. It was a good try, Mike, but it doesn't look like you're going to get anywhere. I don't think tracker will be good for my mental health. You are who your friends are and I'm just as susceptible to these conversations and crude jokes as the next person. The only way to keep my focus on what's right is to choose what I spend my time doing and who I spend it with. I, for one, have enough problems on my own without getting sidetracked by stuff like this. Mike tried to help and give a different perspective. If people really wanted to hear it, that would be great...otherwise, I don't think he or anyone else is obligated to keep on trying to explain to people whose minds are closed. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 2 Timothy 2:24 so this right-wing, holier than thou, homeschoolin' mama of four who should have never joined in the 1st place iiiiissss outta here! have fun all, Merry Christmas - may you find Christ, Jen

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (591 posts) at 01:56 PM:
Firstly I agree with the intent of Michiganmike's post and like the others think G rated might be a little too tame.

Ultimately for me, it comes down to the Tracker Code of Conduct. (there are probably some who may be thinking right now that I can take the code of conduct and shove it up the same place Persephone's magnifying glass went :)

It isn't my site. I didn't write the COC, all I can do is interpret what the Webmaster meant when he wrote it. Just as you are all free to interpret it your way. Until the Webmaster steps up to the plate and takes a more active role in what he intended when he wrote the COC, we can be left debating what we all feel is acceptable for tracker until the cows come home *mooooo*

I have seen in the past where the Webmaster has shut down certain threads because he felt they were unproductive. He has the ability to step in and do something. From what I have seen, he hasn't been around since the middle of November. Is he choosing to just let this die down? Is he OK with the threads that some of us have found objectionable? Or has he just not been around to see what is going on here? I don't know and frankly, I am a little disappointed that he permits these flare-ups to continue. They happen on a regular basis and in all honesty, I'm sick of them.

I don't know what the solution is. I suppose I can take my toys and go play in another sand box or I can continue to fight for what I believe the Webmaster intended when he set up this site. In so doing though, I will be perpetuating the very flare-ups that I find so draining.

Webmaster are you out there?

Shit happens. Suck it up or leave is all I can say. Just keep the ad hominem attacks to yourself.

Hey Chuck talking about everyone finding something offensive. I work in the entertainment buz, We have Xmas trees and Menorahs all already the complex. There was a presentation for a former Isreali prime minister. A woman complained that there was no Menorrahs and all these Christmas trees. But she failed to see the Menorahs in her own pictures that she had taken. We had to point them out to her.

I forgot to mention that she was ranting and raving about the trees.

I am a once removed member due to how the environment changed after the 15 finalists were picked. It was wierd, and I had to take a break...Anyway I found that this site IS a place of inspiration, inspiration that I NEED! I learned that I am addicted to food, I am not consistant and that even after a pretty successful I learned that I haven't made BFL and EFL a lifetime change. It is an amazing way to live, and I miss it AND I need your support, your ideas and great helpfull threads that keep the motivation alive. Please understand that I do get offended, yet I do have a sense of humor and I would love to have a PG-13 environment here and understand that it won't always be...I just know that this site helpled me more than I realized throughout my rigerous 12 weeks and I thank you all. So if I'm still welcome, I'd like to come back.

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (377 posts) at 03:08 PM:
I always say everyone is welcome and I really wish people wouldn't leave unless they truely need to leave but don't leave under these bad terms. welcome back scotfarcus!

Body for Life Forum Message by gbfan (317 posts) at 03:24 PM:
Welcome back, scotfarcus! My two cents... I have teenage sons who I would like to see get involved with BFL. Are they heavy and NEED a site to inspire them to lose weight? No. But, I want them to learn to incorporate a good healthy exercise/eating regime into their lives and if they choose to come to Tracker for inspiration or information... I don't think they need to see many of the threads that are here. Then again, I have MTV blocked out of my house. I cannot find anywhere on this site that it is for ADULTS only. Am I missing that somewhere? I don't think 3rd graders need to be on here for any reason, but there might be teenagers lurking. There will never be anything left by me that would be inappropriate or questionable in nature. That's my moral standard. That may be too much for some, but that is how I live my life. I've also been trying to sell my bosses on this program for the last year and to be honest, I doubt the two "pastors" would be interested in many of these discussions. So, this site is not shared with many of my friends... and that's a shame, because I get a lot of inspiration, encouragement and information from many of you. I would choose to keep to the business at hand and have a "fitness site" as the forum rules call it.

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (377 posts) at 03:29 PM:
Not rtying to be confrontational but it is stated somewhere that you have to be 18 years old. As soon as I find that exact wording and where it is located I will let you know.

Body for Life Forum Message by gbfan (317 posts) at 03:33 PM:
I will not take it as confrontational, crone, just helpful.

Body for Life Forum Message by Moggie (591 posts) at 03:37 PM:
Crone, it says that when you sign on to be a member. I may be mistaken but when you verify that you are 18, you are also agreeing to abide by the Code of Conduct. The COC says that this is a fitness site and that "Off Topic (OT) are not prohibited, but should be posted within reason. There are some topics that are not appropriate for the forums." As I said above...just what the Webmaster intended with that is open for interpretation.

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (377 posts) at 03:38 PM:
actually I tried a couple of things. It's when you create a profile. It won't let you put in anything under the age of 18. So if your under 18 all you have to do is put in age 18.

Mike: I commend your effort at trying to make this forum an even keel that everyone can enjoy! I am not an individual that gets upset easily, nor do I easily get offended. I understand that language varies from person to person. Although I do not use profanity in my everyday life, I do realize that others do, for I am not sheltered by any means. I do not choose to use vulgar or obscene words, nor do I condemn others for using them. I do understand why other people get offended though. I like Willogirls comments. I think they can add "spice" so to speak in certain situations. When I don't find it appropriate, is when there doesn't seem to be any purpose or substance behind it, other than just to use them. That is just me though, and I don't expect anyone to think/believe as I do. Flower: You know I love you girl, but I'm going to have to disagree with you on the children issue. My daughter has been struggling with her weight since she hit puberty, has been eating EFL with us for quite some time and I'd like her to keep an interest in it. I'd much rather have my children reading about health and fitness than playing games on the computer, especially during the winter months when it's too cold for them to be outside. I'm not saying this should become a childrens site, no, not at all. But if you think about it, just how many websites are out there geared towards overweight children? I mean, we are supposed to be setting an example to them, right? Do I let her park herself here? No, but I do share some of the pics with her, or read some threads that may hit home with her. It's still up to the parent to monitor the children and their time spent on the internet. So to that extent, I'd like to keep sharing some of the more useful threads with her while she is going through her own struggles. I think the point is, if we all just try to clean it up a little, there would be less people getting upset over misunderstandings that could easily be avoided. and last but not least: Kmachate: What happened to you? You used to be pretty cool and very supportive and had good advise to give. Lately though you have been cynical and downright obnoxious. Where did that guy go? I kind of miss him! Jennifer

Body for Life Forum Message by Flower (2028 posts) at 04:15 PM:
Jennifer (DreamCatcher) - you're right! Of course!!!! That was far too harsh, crude & obnoxious and I apologize. My angle was one sided and to look at it from the point of view that you are making, I should have considered that. Again, I apologize. Just out of curiosity, why didn't anyone make any comments to what I wrote in reference to Pulp Fiction? Again I am just curious; and moreso, does anyone/everyone know what was in "the box"?

Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (622 posts) at 04:19 PM:
I didn't comment on it specifically because I know exactly what you are talking about, hence my comments geared towards profanity is really not my thing, but with substance or "spice" so to speak, I can easily overlook language that is not necessarily my taste. My opinion on profanity is not religious, just a choice for me. But I can still enjoy a good movie or conversations provided there IS intellect behind it! So...there you have it..I agree!

Body for Life Forum Message by havlow (151 posts) at 04:32 PM:
Jennifer I'll second what you're saying. Michiganmike and Flower both make excellent points but I think we need to get those points into a more central position as we all come from different backgrounds, religious viewpoints and political beliefs...all of which in my opinion have nothing to do with fitness. If you're going to use profanity make sure it counts...don't go setting off F-bombs and saying fart all the time just because you can. If you want to tell pray for someone or let someone know that god is important to you then please do so in a way that is supportive instead of judgemental or might be taken as forcing a conversion to that belief. All in all we're smart intelligent people and in the middle of a debate that frankly should have been taken care of by the webmaster. If you're gonna post make it count...if you're just going to make silly inane comments then you're just wasting calories that could be better used elsewhere.

Yea I would have to say I agree with several people on here. Personally G rated would drive me nuts and would be about as boring as can be. Because a) I know everyone would be forcing the nicey nice kinda like the stepford wives running around here. And well I have a 2 year old and I live in a G world most of the time. I like being an adult. But I do respect others as well. I think PG-13 is a good happy medium. Personally I like to comment when I get my ass kicked in the gym. b) I just try to ignore all the drama but it is annoying when it seems to be a stupid game of who can be the crudest and all that crap. It is just so pointless and well I agree with Shanette I just try to stay out of it. It's like a good soap opera and makes me laugh when I do actually read some of it. It used to make me mad then I realized OMG I am letting a stupid computer get me riled up WTF? How stupid. c) I think if the people that want to support fitness re-lated or supportive threads then stick with those threads and respond to those and support those. Thats how they stay up top. Eventually all the poo poo should go away when they find that no-one cares about all the other pointless stuff. And if they do then well they have each other to talk to. Simple enough. Right? Any of this make sense?

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (377 posts) at 08:05 PM:
Total sense.

Body for Life Forum Message by gbfan (317 posts) at 08:18 PM:
Good point, TNT. That's the way I approach every thread on here. If I can help in some way, I try to chime in. If not, I'm not involved. There will never be a way that all of us that are members will agree with "right vs. wrong". We all have too many varying degrees of standards. The fact that people can get offended by someone asking people to tone things down a bit baffles me... especially when if you count the times that profanity or risque comments have been made on here they far outweigh the times people have actually stepped to the plate and been the lone voice speaking for many. It takes a big person to step up like that... but I agree that this site should be used to promote BFL, better health and a better way of life... we are a support group and that should be the ultimate goal.

I was just curious how some of you were proposed to? Mine was so touching, I thought I would share... Jason and I live in Colorado, at the foothills of the Rockies. Hiking and camping are the norm for us, so I didn't think anything of us going hiking for the day. He took me Rifle Falls and we went on a 2hr hike. The day was sunny and beautiful. As we were leaving, we decided to sit on a bench under the backside of the waterfall. I was sitting there taking it all in, when he got down on one knee. I was sure he was tying his shoe laces. I was so blind-sided when out came a diamond. He told me he loves me more than anything in this world and asked if I would spend the rest of my life with him? Of course I said yes, and out of his backpack came a bottle of champagne and glasses he'd been carrying all morning!! So sneaky...He later took me to Hanging Lake ( this place should be the 8th wonder of the world) and then to Glenwood Hot Springs for a night in the Honeymoon suite. We went out for a romantic dinner, and a long hot soak in the hot springs, where it began to rain...it was sooo romantic. That was last June, we will be getting married this April. The day he proposed was one of the best days in my life...

Body for Life Forum Message by Shannette22 (623 posts) at 09:52 AM:
Ohhhh! Great topic! I loved my proposal!!! My hubby put together a little Easter egg hunt for me in his backyard, the weekend of Easter. I didn't really think anything of it, because he is the type to do cute little things like that for me. Well, he started the hunt by reading clues to me to find each egg.....when he busted out all these clues to read to me, I was thinking "hmmmm...this seems kind of serious...." So, the last clue he gave me was, "when you love someone as much as I love you, it's time to do something BIG." So, this directed me to this huge Easter egg in the yard....I walked over to the big egg and there was a little piece of paper sticking out of it that said, "hold out your hand." That's when he hit one knee....it was awesome!!! And the best part is that his parents were hiding behing the fence taking pics of the whole thing!! now this is a good thread!! here's my story. i met my husband on a blind date about 2 months before i was supposed to leave to move to italy for a year. we planned on just having some good company before i left, but 2 weeks into our "fling" i asked him as a joke, to come with me to italy, 2 days later he said sure why not(hes a italian citizen btw, so it was easy to get him to come along!) and 1.5 months later we were living in florence. but when he proposed was on thanksgiving about 6 months into our relationship, we went to my universities dinner party with our friends and roomates, then afterwards we went to a local pub. while we were there with everyone he bought me a rose and a cd from a street vendor (he hadnt done anything like that before) and we hung out at the pub for a while. then we decided to go back to the apt, when we got in he put on the cd and we started talking about our relationship, and how much he loved me, then out of nowhere he says "alexis, will you be my wife. will you marry me?" i almost choked! i said yes, but we had no ring then. he ended up going down to southern italy to ask his father for one of his mothers rings to give me, he came back and we went to venice for my birthday a few weeks later, and he got down on 1 knee in a puddle, on this little bridge and gave me a proper proposal. and i said yes again! we were engaged for about 3 years, and got married this past april in north miami beach. so far we are loving married life! (except for the pounds i put on after the wedding lol!!) alexis

Body for Life Forum Message by Supa K (746 posts) at 11:53 AM: Reading: Are you familiar with Kahlil Gibran?
I've recently been introduced to this man, born in Lebanon in 1883. He immigrated to New York in 1912 and wrote a series of books. The one I'm reading is "The Prophet." It's the story, or verse, rather, of a man who is left on an island and lives among the people there for years, all the while waiting for his ship to come bring him home. When it does arrive, he is met by the townspeople who have come to know and love him, and each asks him to teach them about important aspects of life -- like children, love, marriage, work and religion. It is a wonderful book -- a very short read. Here's a passage, about prayer: "When you pray, you rise to meet in the air those who are praying at that very hour, and whom save in prayer you may not meet."

This is the chapter on children... And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, "Speak to us of Children." And he said: Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

The chances of getting snowed-in in Denver aren't any higher than any other place that gets snow in the winter. I'm checking the weather before I leave because I don't want to get snowed-in on I-70 in the middle of Kansas. So, if everything works out, I will be there!!!

This game is compltely fantastic!!! I'm on the edge of my seat. Being from Indiana, gotta love the Colts. But, gotta love Drew Brees...cuz he played for Purdue (my alma mater). I'm sure all true fans are not posting on tracker right now. I'm multi-tasking. Now, back to the game. Go Chargers! Go Colts!

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (377 posts) at 03:13 PM:
Oh sorry. I'm watching the Browns and Raider. Go Browns!!!!!!

Body for Life Forum Message by crone (377 posts) at 03:21 PM:
Yje Chargers have won, The Colts are now 13-1

Body for Life Forum Message by Karla (445 posts) at 05:55 PM:
Yeah, I've still got mixed feelings about this. Well, if anyone was going to beat the Colts, I'd want it to be the Chargers. Besides, the Chargers really needed this win to have a chance to be in the playoffs. And now, there's less pressure on the Colts for the playoffs. I hope they win The Super Bowl!

Never bet the house against California teams! Tom P.S. I'm not a Chargers fan. I used to be a rabid Rams fan until there owner stole them from us and moved to St Louis.

Body for Life Forum Message by FV Tom (80 posts) at 06:28 PM:
Well, alright then. A lot us here would rather that the Raiders weren't in California! Of course, most of Northern California wishes it wasn't in California anyway: "the Republic of San Francisco" Go Browns!

Body for Life Forum Message by Udenia (2074 posts) at 04:23 PM: LOCKED OUT OF THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes I said it, even when the child has pneumonia, he finds a way to make my life even more challenging.,  I looked outside and saw my Santa Claus had turned over, it is really windy today, so I stepped out the front door and stood him back up (2 sec) and my child was already across the living room and came up behind me and SHUT THE DOOR!

I am standing outside with my socks on, looking in at him watching SHREK!!!!! I didn't panic right away because I wasn't cooking but I could not find a way in, lucky my neighbors saw me and called security and within about 10 minutes they were there and let me in,

I went straight over to Cameron and started crying, hugging him,,,, he don't get it but I sure as hell do.

That scared the hell out of me, I guess I need to hide a key or give one to a neighbor....
I thought I was done with challenges, with Autism, Pneumonia and now getting locked out of the house....

WHEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

Thread: Posted by Matt to Julie's Blog (195 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by GlennH (63 posts) at 05:36 PM: Posted by Matt to Julie's Blog
Julie's condition is grave.

She has been bleeding profusely. They have given her well over 100 units of blood.

Her heart is not functioning adequately. She is on a heart-lung machine. Her heart valves were not in as good of condition as was thought.

Because of the massive amounts of blood loss, the surgeon is concerned about organ damage, especially the brain.

To continue their efforts, they are going to begin testing Julie's brain function and her reaction to stimulus.

This is a critical time. I know there were some reports earlier about Julie's condition was good, but that simply wasn't the case. From the moment the surgery began, there were major complications.

Dr. Davis and the entire Duke medical staff have put in an heroic effort. I sincerely appreciate their tremendous work.

Please continue to pray for Julie. Beg the Lord for His merciful intercession. She will need another miracle to survive.

Words simply cannot express how much Julie means to me. She is my life. She is my love. She is my family. The pain in simply unbearable.

Please pray for Julie.

Once again, she is defying the odds. I just saw this post on the BFL site. Stephanie, thanks for the update.

JULIE UPDATE: 6:30PM SUNDAY

It has been determined that Julie seems to have appropriate brain function. She was able to respond to stimuli, move limbs and squeeze hands on command. This is a big hurdle as the doctors were very concerned about brain function given the amount of blood loss she had. Julie is again defying all odds. The eyes of the world are focused on Duke University and their transplant team. They are a small team of heroes who have stayed constantly by Julie’s side. Again I ask to please continue with prayers. Sincerely, Stephanie

Thread: Cottage Pie Anyone???? (141 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Fiona Oceangirl (41 posts) at 02:58 AM:
Hi everyone, sorry for the delay, after my cottage pie, was up in cloud 9 for few days. Ok heres the recipe. 1.Mashed potatoes,(no butter to be added)You may flavour as you like. 2.Lean steak -Minced.You may chose lean beef/ turkey/chicken breast.whatever you prefer, must be minced.cook (braise)this for a short time in spices of your choice. I do this in the microwave. 3.Mixed veges of your choice. I used frozed mixed veges.loads of them. In a casserole dish, add half of mixed veges, you may season them if you like. layer next with half of the minced meat/chicken/turkey. Repeat again with veges, then rest of mince/chicken. Last cover all with layer of mash potatoe. you may chop some chives on top. cover with cling wrap Microwave for about 10 mins or bake in oven for about 20-30 mins. When ready, you have a great healthy meal for the entire family.Kids love it! To serve, you cut out a square as per YOUR PORTION SIZE. If I make this in a larger dish, its enough for about 6 servings. I keep the rest for later meals or freeze in individual servings for emergencies. This is the traditional way, you can add garlic/ onions on mash before grilling for another variety. Basic to remember is layer of veges, then meat(protein).then layer of mash(Carb). Its easy and the varieties are endless as you can substitute and change the ingredients and flavourings for added variety. My gran would sprinkle grated cheese on top of the mash before cooking in the oven.I leave this out. Good luck and Enjoy

I don't have a copy of the EFL book, does it have any details, such as calories, fat, carbos or protien listed for the receips or is it just understoon that this is a good meal and I would be able to choose 6 of those meals everyday if I wanted to, or are some high calorie?

thanks,

Hi Linda The book doesnt list calories, fat, etc. You could check the Eating for Life website. I use the book for ideas and some variety. Also check on the BFL site, click on recipes and you will find loads of ideas for all 6 meals. The ones which have the BFL Authorisation stamp are the ones to go for. Email me, I have a list of my favourite recipes comiled.Hope this helps.

I just believe 90 minutes of exersice is way to much unless you are not at a high intensity level yet. Remember the goal is to increase intensity and that can be done in many ways such as more time (the worst way) more work in the same amount of time, or finally decrease time yet do more work. I think information through IAN KING is fantastic and he talks about intensity above volume. Hope this helps

Restarting is never a good plan. It leads to a habit of looking for perfection in your challenge. Perfection does not exist. We don't get do-overs in real life. Don't give yourself a "do-over" here. I sprained my knee the end of October. You wanna talk about hard! Try figuring out how to work around that. Try figuring out how to work around that with no gym. Yes, the back can be a problem. So find a cardio workout that does not aggrivate it and do that. You can do this. I've lost 30 pounds since beginning of September. I've stumbled along the way. I've had bad weekends, missed workouts. But I have not quit. Yes it's hard to do BFL full tilt at the holidays. You know what? That's why you NEED to do it full tilt. Celebrate your successes, dust yourself off when you slip. This is about learning control of your life. YOU control what goes in and what comes out. Nobody else. So the question is- just how bad do you REALLY want this? Only you have the asnwer. :)

Julie remains in critical condition on the heart/lung bypass machine. They have gotten the bleeding a little more under control and now they need to determine potential damage to the rest of her organs. I do not want to divulge too much detail for you all, but please know that we believe God's hand is at work. Several medical things have come to light that if found earlier would have completely prevented Julie from getting this transplant. I have to believe this means God has plans for Julie and that she will survive.

I had email from her Dad. They are exhausted beyond comprehension. Matt is overwrought. Please continue to lift them all up in prayer as I know you have been doing.

Holidays, family stress, low self esteem. Julie Whitt is in surgery right now, doing everything in her power to make it to tomorrow. That's why she's missing her workout today. So what's your excuse for not working out and eating clean this week? I can't find one.

Body for Life Forum Message by joninstpete (130 posts) at 07:52 AM: Turning 40 on my free day
Say a few words for Juile and her family today. Well it is the big 40 today, Last night my sister had a brithday grathering at her house form me and my famliy. It was awesome everyone had my kinds of foods. Steak, baked taters, and freshe green beans. Then came the cake, I was so glad she had gotten an ice cream cake, ice cream is not a weakness for me. SO I had a very small slice. Some may say bad Jon and you made an excuse. Rest assure that is not the case. I do not take advanage of my free days. SO one free meal in a week is not the end of the comment I have made. I hope every one has an awesome day and remember to hug your love ones today.

Okay, so the holidays have taken their toll on me. I've pretty much fallen off the BFL wagon. Not completely fallen off, but about 90% fallen off. haha. Anyways, I am proud to announce that I will be full throdle BFLin come January 2nd. And what makes me super excited is that I have like 3 coworkers who want to start with me then, also!! I got on this site and was showing them my progress pics as well as lots of yours and they found them to be very inspiring!!! Can't wait!!!

Thread: To Julie Whitt: (153 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by T~N~T (800 posts) at 02:14 PM: To Julie Whitt:
(I am praying that she is able to read this when she recovers.....)Please share anyone how Julie has effected your life as well if you would like too. Oh dear where do I start? I know we have never met..... we have exchanged e-mails and PM's at the same forum....but never met formally in person. I found out about you and your courageous story in my 3rd or 4th week of my 3rd attempt at BFL. It was then that I knew I would finish my challenge. After reading everything you had endured and how much you kept going just because you had to for you. Even after severe complications and being in the hospital you still worked out. I still have this vision in my head of you doing a chest press with nothing but determination in your eyes. And also the story that you chose to eat a protein bar when you would usually chomp on a snickers bar. That one made me chuckle because I so knew where you were coming from. See Julie, you came into my life when I started my BFL because I too had endured some pretty tough times in my life. Physically, mentally, and yes even spiritually. And then one day I just picked up and started BFL January 17th, 2004. It was so strange I just knew I could not live the way I was living. Auto pilot took over me and I just kept putting one foot in front of the other and learning each step of the way. Learning a lot about myself and learning more and more of "why" I was doing this. Then I came across your story. By some divine way I found your story. I read it. I cried. I was so filled with joy for you. You to me and still are one of the most amazing women I know. After I read that it just all "clicked" for me. I knew why I was doing BFL. Because I almost lost so much too. You taught me that it is really true that we never should take anything for granted. And no matter what, it is a good day to workout and make healthy choices. You taught me that I should never take my physical state for granted. You also taught me that I could exceed beyond my own physical disability. You know what I did!!!! To sit around and feel sorry for myself was not an option getting in the gym and pumping iron and making my arm stronger was the only option. Sitting around feeling sorry for myself and eating my troubles away was not an option but eating healthy was! Feeling sorry for myself plain and simple was not an option! It was not an option for you and you showed me it was not an option for me either. Thank you Julie Whitt! I am just one of the many people you have helped Julie. You see this world needs you desperately. Your strong, positive, beautiful light to guide many of us. I know right now you and many Doctors are fighting for your life right now. And I keep saying if anyone can pull off one more miracle it would be you. I also know from things you have wrote that you are at peace with whatever the Lord has planned for you. I just can't imagine your strength Julie. I pray for your family and that wonderful husband of yours. I will continue to pray for you because it is a dream of mine to meet you in person one day. So please fight like hell! I know you are. I know a whole army of people are. I don't think any of us are ready to loose you right now. I will be here waiting ..... Teresa

Thank you Teresa for this thread. I was Blessed on October 14th at the Bowling Alley in Knoxville TN. It was something that will stay with me as long as I live. About 10 minutes after I arrived I heard the SWEETEST voice behind me saying "Dana?? Come here and give me a hug-I have been waiting to meet you for sooo long!!" It was JULIE!! I was truly AWESTRUCK. (Its not very often that you get to meet one of your heros in person...and then for her to seek ME OUT?? OMG!!!) Julie....you have helped me thru sooo much. Your emails have lifted me up thru the passing of my beloved Tucker, the situations with my Sisters murder, the problems with my son and soooo much more. I can never say thank you enough. Your determination, friendship and attitude have taught me so much about myself. I am a better person because of Y-O-U!! Your speech at the TN Dinner still rings thru my ears, and the warmth of your smile and hugs stay with me everyday. Meeting Matt, and your family was so special to me, but having you introduce me to them as "Your FRIEND" meant THE WORLD!! I KNOW you will get thru this...there are so many of us praying for you, plus WE hafta run RED ROCK together!! Theres so much more I could say-but "I love you Dear FRIEND" says it all. God Bless....Dana

How do you find words to tell someone you've never met how much they mean to you? How do you do it without sounding like some cliche? I'm a selfish person. I don't want you to leave this world just yet because I want to tell you these things in person. I want to stammer and blush while I try to tell you just how much you've changed my life. I want to try and tell you that you are one of my heros. I know I'll stammer more because I won't want to make you uncomfortable by saying the word hero. Lord, I'm not family, and not even someone she might call friend. But if you can, please, please, please...find one more miracle for the Whitts tonight. And give me the chance to tell Julie these things face to face.

Thanks for starting this thread, T.  Your post is beautiful and very touching.

I’ve been trying the best I can to put my thoughts about Julie into words, but I’m having a very difficult time with this… Although I’ve never met her, I feel like I’ve come to know the person she is through her blog and via other websites. Julie’s sheer determination to live her life to the fullest is awe inspiring. Her love of music, love of humor, love of children, love of her family and passionate belief system are amazing. Julie is so strong and so beautiful and so humble. Thinking of all she’s endured makes me look deeper inside myself and inspires me to be a better person. Julie is a young woman with many dreams to fulfill and a lot of living to do. I truly, truly admire her for so many reasons and hope beyond all hope that I have an opportunity to tell her how much she’s inspired me someday.

Much love to you Julie - and Matt and your family and friends. I can’t even begin to imagine what they must be feeling at this time.

Thread: Why do you use the tracker? (79 Views)

Body for Life Forum Message by Rod has changed his Bod (437 posts) at 08:59 PM: Why do you use the tracker?

I dont think I have ever commented on any of the negativity threads because basically I really dont have the time for it or care one way or the other.

In my world I barely have time to get on the computer anymore.  With family, work and fitting in BFL there is not much time left in the day.

I do like to utilize the tracker to keep track of my progress, maybe motivate someone else with a word or two of wisdom and follow the progress of the people on here who I respect and that motivate me.

I can tell you that in the web world, just like in the real world,  you can get a feel for someones personality. If  you like and respect their personality interact with them, if you dont like it, dont interact with them. Now if I have never interacted with you, please do not read into this and think I do not like you.  I truly am limited to my tracker time these days.

I wish the Big Bull were back, he had that personality that always seemed to get you fired up and after reading one or two of his threads you were ready to run out to the gym and go ALL IN for the next hour.

Lets all ask Santa to bring back the Big Bull.  Who's with me? Are you IN or are you ALL IN?

Peace, Your BFL Buddy,

Rod

Rod - I think your sentiments about Tracker are shared by alot of people. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of that positivity coming back. If we ignore the negative stuff and not bring more attention to it by reacting to it, as well as keep putting more positive and helpful threads and posts out there, it will eventually get back to the tracker we know and love. Thanks for this thread...good to think about what we are here for in the first place. I am here to share in my BFL journey, meet others who are doing the same thing, gain knowledge and motivation from others around me and hopefully help other people along the way. And I have met some AWESOME people on here, and still meet new awesome people here all the time!!! I want Big Bull back, too, but we can all bring the spirit that he brought to the boards back by doing what he and many others (Rod, you are one of them) do when they post!!! Nancy

thank you for the thread. Body for Life Forum Message by DreamCatcher (622 posts) at 11:59 PM:
I miss Big Bull too! He just has one of those "magnetic" personalities that you can't help but love! I use tracker to keep track of my own progress, to give encouragement to others when they are hitting a rough spot (cause I never know when I'll need a kick in the butt!), and I use it to relate to others that know what I'm going through, where I'm headed, etc. I like to see others triumphs, empathize with their heartaches and just be there when they need support, no matter what kind of support they are needing at the moment. This is really the heart of it all, yes? Thanks Rod, for posting this! Jennifer

Hello Everyone, I thought that I would post about this upcoming week and the challenges that I for one am going to face. Christmas weekend is going to basically be one heck of an uphill battle and I was wondering if anyone had any advice to give from past experiences. I am actually really excited about the holidays but more excited about BFL. I am confident that I will be able to make it through these functions and parties without losing all that I have worked for. I just keep reminding myself that no food can taste as good as success feels and damn is that true. Here's to having a great time with our families and still sticking to plan. Hey Stranger! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!! And who cares how many times you tried. The fact is the importance is that no matter if you failed 5 times and succeeded the 6th time it was worth all the failure. Take one day at a time and yes don't strive for perfection just consistency. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Take care! T

I agree with T...think where you would be if you NEVER tried. One thing that helps me is breaking my challenge up in alot of little chunks...then I celebrate when I make it, or repeat to myself when I am close to making the first month..."I am almost 1/3 finished with this challenge" It may seem silly, but it really works for me. Many little goals and challenges within the one goal and challenge. Welcome back! Hugs Christie

I agree and webmaster, I don't feel that is should be your decision to say that it is allowed to say whatever and if you don't like it just press the ignore button, I feel you as a webmaster needs to be in control and have rules. It's not that any of this bothers me personally, it's just not necessary to use the F word just because you feel like it. and also this is not just an adult site, I recommend this site to teens that are interested in learning how to be fit and eat clean and learn, this site is about fitness so if you don't want to talk fitness go to another site that wants to hear your f words and come back here when you want to talk fitness. Body for Life Forum Message by michiganmike (170 posts) at 09:24 PM:
Yep, put me down as voting against anarchy, too. Taking the forums off the front page is a start. You might also consider a special forum category for the ones looking for love interests or trolling for nude photos or cussing at others. If you labeled it that way, then no one could be complaining about stumbling into it. The more I think about it, maybe just a monitor would be better. Good luck, webmaster. This is all beginning to look like that old political adage:"No good deed goes unpunished!"

Body for Life Forum Message by Firefox Maximus (9 posts) at 09:25 PM:
I agree. Also consider a "word filter" that would prevent any post that contains "adult verbiage" from appearing on the home page. Many prefer not to be exposed to profanity or graphic descriptions of sexuality or bodily functions in the "general fitness" areas. I wonder how many guests (seeking support) have been turned off by the "drama," harsh attitudes, and profanity recently on display, never to return. It is a shame that the needs of the few have started to outweigh the needs of the many. This site serves different purposes for different people. Unfortunately, its reputation has been recently tarnished and its usefulness to the "general fitness community" jeopardized. I would like to see Tracker remain a valuable asset to the fitness community as a whole and not just pander to the needs of a few; particularly those who use the banner "Freedom of Speech" to justify imposing attitudes and language upon those who come here primarily for fitness support. Chuck's suggestion is a reasonable solution to meeting the needs of all Tracker members. Keep the OT section off the home page.

I've said it before, I think some of the OT stuff is great! I actually believe it's needed because we all do have stressful lives and need to chat about silly things. However, the main page should be used for BFL support and the other topics can be sought after. Connie

I don't mind it. Might be nice.

I have a different take on this. I log on from the office (please don't tell!) and I like to see the top topics because i'm pressed for time. (I love top 10 lists!) But it is a DRAG to see raunchy OT threads dominating.

Jennifer, You will still be able to see subject headings of the OT threads in the OT area, just not on the "Home Page." Do you see the distinction? It's a workable solution that satisfies the needs of all.

I agree, and I do think some volunteer moderators would be awesome.
