Who wears gloves while lifting?
Why do you use them?
What kind? Do you like them? Do they offer wrist support?
Anyone just use wrist wraps?
Thanks

No gloves here...just chalk! I do use wrist wraps though as I have dainty little girl wrists.
Danielle has gloves, wrist wraps, and versa grips and uses all 3 (not at the same time though). I know she LOVES her Versa Grips!
Some gloves come with a wrist support but it wont be as good as real wrist wraps. I prefer Inzer Z wraps
http://www.inzernet.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=WRAPS_IRON_WRISTZ
the short (12") is good for most women and the medium (20") is good for most guys.
Danielle uses these:

I have no problem wearing gloves or straps. No chalk in my gym. If I tear my hands what good is it. I use straps when using extremely heavy dumbbells. Yea I may be a wuss but it beats dropping a 110-120 pound dumbbell after the 10 rep. Plus I don't wear my steel-toed boots to the gym so logic rules. BuTT I don't wear straps and gloves together like I have seen.
If..I forget my straps, then I go glove-less and use the hook grip which works just dandy.
If you want the both of both worlds, go Versa Grips.

BP, they don't allow chalk or they don't provide it? I carry my own chalk in tupperware. There are also "liquid chalks" and spray chalks that dont make the mess of a traditional chalk.
I use straps as well, when my grip is smoked and I still want to finish my back.
Hook Grip FTW!
But what if being a smartass is the only thing you are good at???

I wear gloves, and I am fine with it. I know some guys moan and brag about how calloused their hands are, but like BP said, what is the point of the bragging if you end up tearing it or getting a blister. That just means multiple days of no lifting.
I also own wrist hooks like these.
I use the wrist hooks only on exercises where my grip tends to fail before the targeted muscle. I find them particularly helpful when I am doing supersets, especially when the final set is calf raises and I am holding heavy dumbbells.

For me it is not about bragging. In a powerlifting comp you cant use gloves, so I need to train the way I compete. Plus I like the way the bar feels in my chalked up calloused man hands. If you tear something, you just any extra skin with your teeth and than fill the open wound with more chalk. Apply athletic tape on top of that if you have some, if not be kind enough to wipe your blood off the bar when you are finished.

gloves/wraps/etc. = training to look good.
chalk/calluses = training to be functionaly strong and powerful.
Different strokes for different folks.

I'm just now seeing this.
I actually use two types, fingerless gloves and Versa Gripps. I know that some consider the use of gloves to be less "manning" up. But honestly, the last thing I want to do is play tiddily winks witn hubs' woohoo and him to say "what's wrong with your hands". Maybe it's a southern thing but so be it, it's considerate of him with all he tolerates from his fitness crazed middle-aged wife. I also wear the gloves when doing rope work (not related to tying him up either).
I love the Versa Gripps, they allow me to pull heavier dumbbells when doing one arm rows, lat pulldowns and stiff legged dead-lifts. Just my personal preferences.

I just bought versa grips at the ARnold this past weekend after trying them out at the booth---I pulled myself right up on their pull up bar with those things--So far I like them-but they do get in the way as I don't need or like them for every thing--but I have very tiny fingers and sometimes the big stuff just gradually starts to slide out of my fingers before my back or arm muscles give out. Like with bent over rows and dead lifts. I don't think I will use them much for pushing--more just the pulling stuff.
Jamistarr--I got mine in xtra small.
Telle--teehee--too funny about your DH! I have calluses---hmmm maybe he enjoys them

Re: Who wears gloves while lifting?
I have to wear gloves, otherwise the hamsters really rip up my knuckles. They're boney little devils:

I used to not bother, I was rather proud of my callouses. Until one day during deadlifts THEY RIPPED OFF. I wear gloves now lol, with wrist support but I also have something like Versa Grips called Power Grabs that I use for deadlifts.

Re:
Jared said: Does udder cream/bag balm-type stuff work to keep callouses supple?
My biggest callous is at the base of my ring finger, with the pinky a close second, then the middle less so, with none to speak of at the index. Any worthwhile feedback to be gained from this positioning and degree of callous? i.e. good or bad grip style, etc.?

Even with gloves/versa gripps I still have small calouses underneath my "bird" fingers and I use and rough grit emery board when my hands are dry. Works like a charm!
