Even though it might be awesome, I wonder if it is safe for this kid. I would be afraid that this would make his bones ossify early and stunt his growth.....hopefully it is not an everyday thing......

new research suggests that children as young as 8 using proper form can benefit from strength training. It used to be believed that it would "stunt" growth but it has recently been determined that it actually helps the bones become stronger... He didn't look like he strained to pull that, so I would suspect it was fine...

The main thing with telling kids it's ok to lift heavy, is that they need to learn how to do it correctly and with supervision; they also can tend to overuse the part they are working out. you also have parents who push their children too far for the sake of competition(you see this in regular sports as well). Most kids will not learn how to do it correctly and with a program designed for young children. The result is damage to their growth plates from injuries. another thing to consider is that adding heavy weights will also increase their calorie needs-and children need their calories to grow(I don't think this kid has missed a meal though) I don't know about you, but getting my 8 year old to eat food is like pulling teeth some days because he is too busy. I think moderate weights are ok. "The most frequent complication of a growth plate fracture is premature arrest of bone growth. The affected bone grows less than it would have without the injury, and the resulting limb could be shorter than the opposite, uninjured limb. If only part of the growth plate is injured, growth may be lopsided and the limb may become crooked. Growth plate injuries at the knee have the greatest risk of complications. Nerve and blood vessel damage occurs most frequently there. Injuries to the knee have a much higher incidence of premature growth arrest and crooked growth."(National Institute of Arthritis, and Muscular skeletal, and skin disease)

My 5 year old twin girls see me working out and it always cracks me up to see them bust out with some push-ups. They also beg be to pick them up and let them do pull-ups.

Oh, I won't allow my 8 year old to lift with me... she has started to learn at my brother's gym with a wooden stick and that's it so far... I am very particular that she is taught proper form before she even uses a "training" bar (the lighter ones used for training mostly in the oly lifts)
