Whats everyones take on Grapefuit and weight loss?

I've heard that adding grapefruit can help in weight loss? Is this just a myth or is there truth to this? Good carb to add to protein and make a meal out of?

I loooooove grapefruit. I can't tell you scientifically whether it helps to shed fat, but I know if I eat some grapefruit at the end of a meal I'm no longer tempted to keep eating. So I always end my mid-day meal with grapefruit, because that's my toughest time of day to control mindless eating.

It is a carb. It is a fruit. That's about it. There is nothing special about grapefruit that would make it help in losing fat other than it may help with satiety (feeling full) and has relatively low calories. It is fine to use a grapefruit as a carb source in some of your meals.

TBG...I knew you would know something on this. Good to know. I read something you wrote the other day....think it was on whether you were eating enough. Luckily, from what you wrote, I was able to recognize the reason for my grumpy mood yesterday. Wasn't getting enough calories! I tried to make a better choice on what to eat....usually if my blood sugar is low I will get something quick to spike it up (and I know this is wrong, but when you're driving??) So, i grabbed a bottle of grapefruit juice instead of a soda. Granted I didn't have a protein right away, but I added one about 15 minutes later when I got home and felt a whole lot better!

I'm in week 10 right now and my body is changing. I can no longer eat, or drink the things with high sugar in it (even on free day) It makes me sick and my stomach starts cramping, so just trying to replace what I would have with healthier choices, like grapefruit.

CB....I should try adding one at midday too. I need to eat more fruit with my protein instead of just starchy carbs. SOunds good!

Actually, there is some research that a certain compound in grapefruit MAY contribute to fat loss. Keep in mind, I believe the grapefruit was eaten alone in the morning... before the main breakfast.

If you like grapefruit, why not eat it??

Interesting comment Telle. I looked into it and found a 2008 study that suggests that SINETROL has a strong lipolytic effect mediated by cAMP-PDE inhibition, an dtherefore the conclusion was that SINETROL may serve to prevent obesity by decreasing BMI.

If there was something else that you were thinking about, please let me know, because this is an interesting area that needs more research from what I can telle..he he get it?

saw a interesting preparation for grapefruit on Good Eats with Alton Brown

here is how he prepared it.

Cut the Grapefruit in half. Used a knife to slice the sections so they would easily come out. ala grapfruit spoon. Sprinkled large grain sugar on top & took a torch to the sugar to carmelize (think creme brule) Then he took some salt and sprinkled on the hot sugar to sink in.

Vioila.

He said the salt takes away any bitter taste.

To me it just sounded good to have the crunchy sugar with the fruit.

Yeah, I will see if I can dig up the info... that definitely was not the compound I heard of

The artical I read said that it helps in getting rid of the fat stored in the liver and that they were going by tests done on mice in a lab

Kimberley, great job on getting your body switched to loving that clean eating! That's a tough one! My body is still craving all the crap, especially after my 3rd meal.
